javascript exception error

Hi,

I'm using RH11, Webhelp 11.01.235...

I receive a very vague "javascript alert" error when switching between content categories while viewing in Chrome v37.0. Selecting OK to this message clears it and then I can view my docs okay.

I'm also using Zoom search, and frankly, can't remove it from my project due to the number of files to test. But, this error does not occur when clicking through the toolbar (content, index, print)

Anyone else have this issue? I really need to fix it..........

Hi,

I've tried for about an hour to find a list of supported browsers based on RH version & Webhelp. I'm looking for differences between RH9, RH10 and RH11..what versions of IE, Chrome, Firefox, etc.

Can someone point me to the list? Surely, there has to be one....

I would like to have something official in my hands so it can be shared...

RH11, Webhelp, Chrome & the Toolbar

Hi,

I'm running on a trial version of RH11 to test a few things before we upgrade.

I imported a webhelp project from RH9 to RH11.

When the generated project is viewed locally on Chrome, the toolbar on the skin does not display as expected. The order of the buttons in wrong. The buttons display correctly when viewed in IE11.

In Chrome, the "powered by" About button displays between 2 buttons (index & search) on the left side of the screen. In IE11, the "powered by" About button displays correctly - on the far right of the screen.

The order in whstart.js is:

Why doesn't Chrome follow this order? Any other files I should check....?

The same project generated in RH9 doesn't display locally in Chrome, so this is a new issue to me using RH11....

Also in Chrome, the "about" window displays the file path of the whskin_banner.htm file under the window's header.

tested using Chrome version 33.

I know there's an issue with Chrome when saved locally, but I'm looking for minimum versions of IE, Firefox and whatever else I can get my hands on.

How do I get rid of an unnecessary scroll bar? IE10

Hi,

I'm using RH 9.0.2.271, Webhelp, Zoom Search

Among the many gifts IE10 has given me, I have acquired an extra scrollbar when displaying the documentation in IE10. This vertical scrollbar appears to the outside right of my content page.

When the content pane correctly requires a scrollbar, I now have 2, and inside one (correct) and an outside one (not correct).

The 2nd outside scrollbar becomes INACTIVE when I switch to compatibility view in IE10, but it is still there!

How can I get rid of this annoying scrollbar, active or inactive, for once and for all?

Things I've tried to do to elimate this extra outside scrollbar:

1. Turned off the skin thinking my buttons are now too large when displayed in IE10. Nothing would surprise me. No change.

2. Change the magnification of IE ; zoomed in/out. No change.

3. Asked a colleague to test. No change.

4. Played with the TOC pane size. No change.

5. For fun, eliminated the white space on the home page. The scrollbar appears even on the home page where there is minimal text.

6. Looked at the CSS - no idea what would be effective.

7. Tested in Firefox. No change, scrollbars are still there.

I also have a horizontal scrollbar in IE10, but I still have more testing to do before I post

RH9 + IE10 does not display fonts correctly

Hi,

When I view the published documentation in IE10 & Firefox 16.0.1

Bolded font displays "exaggerated" (thick and wide) and not as intended. This style was applied using the B button on the RH toolbar. Resulting code is <span style="font-weight:bold;"></span>
Font which is bolded as a result of an assigned style, displays correctly.

Font family in CSS is Arial.

This does not happen when viewing the same documentation in IE using Compability View (to view as if IE9). In fact, this issue only occurred in IE since moving to IE10. Not sure about previous versions of Firefox.

I have applied the patch provided by William to RH9 for viewing on IE10.

I have also verified that font options are unchecked in IE's Internet Options > Accessibility window.

At the moment, I can't confirm this occurs when viewing on another machine.

Any suggestions?

multiple indexes in simultaneous development

Hi,

I'm in a situation where I work on different versions of our software, sometimes simultaneously. And now have an issue with indexes.

I introduced an index in software version 1 (for example)

I improved on that index (adding more keywords, cross-references, etc manually) in software version 2. We're talking 100+ new entries.

I now am working on software version 1.5

I will soon be working on software version 3

Question: How can I easily bring the improved index from version 2 into version 1.5?

I don't know which is the best option, or if I am missing an option.

1. Should I just copy/replace the index file in an explorer window, outside of RH?

2. Should I copy/paste the contents of the index version 2 and replace the contents of version 1.5?

3. Is there an easy way?

4. What will happen to an index entry from version 2 that is not in the documentation of version 1.5? Will it be bolded? Will it display in the output.

I think I've gotten myself into a little trouble here........

Index Text: "Type the keyword.." and Content Categories

Hi,

I would like to change the text, "Type in the keyword to find" which appears when the Index is displayed.

Here's my situtation:

I use content categories and have a user, install, and settings guide. Some content is shared and displays in more than one category. Conditional build tags determine where the content displays.
I have 3 TOCs
I have one index. The index conveniently hides keywords when that keyword does not appear in the displayed content category (I'll call that a book). RH index wizard was absolutely horrible, so I built the index manually and I wasn't going to go through the process three times.
In the generated files, when selecting the Index button on the skin, the reader will view the index corresponding to the book being displayed. So, when the reader is viewing the user guide, the index contains only those words found in the user guide. When the reader is viewing the install guide and selects the index button, the install index displays.

Issue:

I would like to add the words "User Guide", "Install Guide" and "Settings" to the "Type in the keyword to find" sentence so that it's clear to the reader which index is displayed.

I found the "Type in the keyword to find" text in the output file, whres.xml, but when I change it (in the output files) and refresh my browser I don't see my modification. I can't perform a global change in the Lng folder because I want 3 different texts to display.

Any advice?

Adding Organizational Headers in the TOC

Hi,

I would like to add non-linked headings within a TOC to help organize it. For example, I'd like to add the words "Introduction" and "Functions" to the existing TOC.

Introduction

--Recommended Audience

--What's New

Functions

--Open

--Save

--Edit

My TOC is too large to create the Introduction and Functions headings as top level headings so I don't want to require the users to expand these topics in order to view the contents. I'd rather display all topics at a glance....but in an organized fashion.

Is this possible? I can't seem to figure out how to get a non-linked TOC entry to display! I've been able to add a heading by editting the whtdata.xml file, but is this the only option I have??

Another question:

I've played around with the idea of adding a specific image to these headings to differentiate them from the rest of the TOC, but the Skinny on Skins (thank you!) throws me when the 1st step is to edit the skin so that the image is the different image. The other idea is just to have the headings display without an image.

IE 7 and Firefox 3 display issues - neither work as expected

hi,

I'm having a terrible time trying to figure out how to solve the 2 display issues I have on IE and Firefox. I can't get either one to work like it's supposed to.

I'm using RH8, Webhelp and it doesn't matter what skin I use (nothing custom, just what is available in RH).

On IE 7.0.5730.13, Webhelp only displays information in the information frame (text) when I attempt to resize the panes. If I just click and move my mouse just a little bit to expand the TOC text magically appears for THAT selected TOC topic only. If I move to another topic in the TOC, I have to do the same thing. And by resize, I mean, I click and move a millimeter and the stuff displays. Otherwise, if I do nothing, the TOC displays as expected but the text frame (contents) is blank.

On Firefox 3.5.6, the TOC pane does not display 100% vertically........it's cut off at the end of the TOC and contains scrollbars to move vertically and horizontally.

So, neither browser really works for me. Am I the only one?

I'm using RH 8.0.0.203

Any advice or suggestions are very much welcome.......

Portfolio Display Error: Try closing and reopening..

Hi,

I'm using Acrobat X 10.1.4, Windows 7

I have created a sample portfolio to share with my colleagues for demonstration purposes. The portfolio consists of 12 different PDFs: 10 created from word docs (converted to pdfs) and 2 are .xlsx files. The 9 of the 10 word/PDF files are only one page and 1 word/pdf doc is 3 pages, all text.

When viewing the portfolio either in Preview mode or opening through Reader, I have consistenly received this error:

"If the portfolio contents are not displayed correctly, try closing the portfolio and reopening it. If this does not fix the problem, try switching portfolio layouts."

My colleagues receive a similiar error, but instead it says contact the author of the portfolio.

I have tried switching layouts and even colors but I keep getting this message. Is this a common error and what are my options??

Any tips?

Custom Buttons/How can get them to stay selected?

Hi,

I added my own buttons to a skin I created by selecting the "create custom webhelp skin" option. I am using the contents, index and about buttons which are default. I am adding my own search (for zoom search) and print buttons.

When any of the "default" button are selected, they stay "enabled" until another button is selected. However, when I select my search or print button, it does not stay enabled.

How can I change the behavior of the 2 new buttons to match those of the default buttons?

Hi,

Is there any way to change the color of the navigation pane only? I'm not speaking about the background image. I'm speaking about the area containing the <-- and --> buttons. I would like it to be different than the toolbar (containing the contents, index, etc buttons).

It only seems to take the toolbar color/image.

This is a tricky explanation (or problem), so please bear with me. I think I'm trying to do something that's just not possible.

I have one RH project with conditional build tags. Previously, in RH8, I used the tags to generate 2 outputs, 1 User and 1 Admin. guide. On the skin, I created buttons which launched the "other document"; in the User Guide, this button launched the Admin Guide (in a new window) and vice versa. Zoom search files were separate; a customer could only search in the guide they were viewing.

Now, in RH9, I've tried to make it a little easier for the customer by using the Content Categories feature. In my case, the pull-down choices are User and Admin. With this, I can remove the "launch the __ guide" buttons on the skin and the change from user guide to admin guide is pretty seamless. Also with this new structure, I have made Zoom search "global", meaning the customer search both User and Admin guide simultaneously. Everything works fine until the customer clicks on a result....and the trouble begins. I'm having problems with the TOC.... see the scenario below:

1. View/Content Category = User Guide

2. Customer enters "save" in the search field, but wants to search "all categories" (across the User & Admin Guides).

3. Search results display both User and Admin Guide results. (expected)

4. Customer clicks on an search result from the Admin Guide. This causes the correct page to display in the content pane. (yeah!) However, the TOC still displays "User Guide" (see #1) so it does not sync with the page being viewed because the page being viewed is from the Admin. Guide. (as a 2nd step, if the customer were to click on the breadcrumbs from the page they are viewing, (they are still within the Admin Guide), the TOC does not registering anything and still displays User Guide in the content category list, it's effectively dead)

5. Customer clicks on a User Guide result from step #2. The correct page displays and the TOC syncs with the page being viewed. This is because of #1.

What I'd like to have is that if the customer is in the User Guide, does a search, but wants to see a result from the Admin. Guide, they could click on that link which would cause the Admin Guide TOC to display and sync with the page being viewed. Is this possible?

I have dbl-ckd that sync toc is on (it works fine, except during the scenario above).

For those that use RH search.......how does content categories work with it? Can you only search the Content Category you are in? Or can you search across all content categories? How does it behave?

What is "RoboHelp Word COM addin" for Microsoft Word?

I can't find a solution anywhere!

A few months ago, I was able to create a PDF using Acrobat Professional 8 >> Create PDF from file, and then I suddenly could not. On Adobe's site, I found that I needed to re-enable this particular addin, which was disabled during Word updates. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401734.html

While correcting this issue, I noticed that I have a RoboHelp Word COM addin listed in the Word Addin screen and it is ALSO disabled. Does anyone know what this addin is for and if it should be enabled? (and more importantly, why is it disabled!)

Image filepath displays in PDF

Hi,

I have converted a WebHelp document -> Word 2007 , applied some formatting/styles, then converted it to PDF. I converted the Word doc by using the "Create PDF -> From File" option in Acrobat Professional 8.2.3

When the mouse hovers over ALL images in the PDF file, the filepath displays. I don't want this. Actually, I don't want anythinig to display! It's interesting to note the the filepath points to the temp directory created (!doc_tmp_folder_0) on my local machine (so it also displays, C:\Documents and Settings\<myname>\My Documents\...\!SSL!\etc). And this temp directory does not exist anywhere on my machine.

I looked around for some kind of Image setting, both in Word and Acrobat, but I couldn't find anything that I thought resolved this issue.

Wrap long TOC entries

I'm using RH8, WebHelp

Is there any way to "wrap" toc entries so they display on more than one line?

I've used Skinny on Skins (thank you again!) to modify the width of the TOC pane (or pain, depending on the day), but there are only a few TOC entries which are longer than the new default width, and sometimes they are in the 2nd level.

It would look very odd to increase the default width to accommodate this...

Zoom + Popups: An ugly mix?

I'm using RH8, WebHelp and Zoom 6 (Build 1019)

I've recently added 2 popups to my WH project.... Zoom is indexing these popups and displaying them in the search results, as links to an individual file. Clicking on the popup link in the search results, results in only the information in the popup being displayed. It's as if these popups exist as their own file.

So, then my first reaction was to add the popup files to the skip list. Well, this isn't going to work because while the search result lists the popup as a specific file, this file really doesn't exist in my file structure! It's very strange. Here's an example of what's happening:

The RH file: dataex.htm:

---contains a specific zoomtitle : "DataEx" and specific zoom description.

---contains a popup with the word "apple"

---is correctly indexed by zoom

Searching for "apple" returns:

--an entry for DataEx displaying the correct zoom titla and description (as expected)

--an entry for the popup, displayed as: "dataex_text0" + popup contents for the zoom description

Why is it treating the popup as a separate file?

I tried wrapping the ZOOMSTOP and ZOOMRESTART tags around the popup but that did NOT work!

I don't want popups to display in the search results. Any other suggestions, besides just removing the popup all together (I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it anyway)

Browse Sequences = Topics + bookmarks?

Hi,

I'm running RH8, WebHelp.

I've manually created browse sequences with no problems on a project. Now, I want to add a couple of "bookmarks" to my browse sequences, in addition to topics.

When I traverse "next" or down my browse sequence, the bookmark is skipped. When I traverse "previous" or up my browse sequence, this bookmark displays and the previous topic skips.

I can't figure out the issue...

Here's an example of the browse sequence:

--Topic1

--Topic2

--Topic2#bookmark

--Topic3

So, here's what I get:

Down: Topic1> Topic2> Topic 3

Up: Topic3 > Topic2#bookmark > Topic1

Also, I have Topic2#bookmark listed in my TOC...so it looks odd if you're watching the TOC while clicking through the browse sequences. Going down the browse sequence, topic#bookmark is skipped in the TOC, going up it's not. (mirrors the browse sequence issues).

I thought I could add bookmarks to browse sequences, but maybe not? Any suggestions?

Need help troubleshooting Index creation..

Hi,

I'm using RH8, Webhelp, working locally.

I've tried several times to create an index, but each time it crashes.

The first few times, I manually accepted the index keywords.....I'd spend about 25 minutes or so working on it, then RH would freeze on random files (different each time), causing me to reboot RH. I've lost the entire index because it never completed.

Now, I thought I would test it by just automatically adding the index keywords.......and after about 3-4 minutes of it working through the files, it froze. I can't even minimize the RH window, I have to reboot again.

I've created an index for a previous project with no errors......but this is not the case with this project.

Does anyone have any advice on what could be wrong? Anything errors I can eliminate? files to test? review? anything? I don't even know where to begin to troubleshoot this problem.......

One TOC + Many TOCs

Hi,

I'm using RH8, Webhelp, Zoom.

I just want to get a different opinion on this...

I currently have one large project, structured so that all the topics and subtopics are in one .xpj file, and in one long TOC.

For example, the TOC:

Home

TopicA

--A1

----A1.1

----A1.2

--A2

----A2.1

--A3

TopicB

--B_A1

----B_A1.1

----B_A.2

What I'd like to do is to have each 1st level subtopic (shown above as A1, A2, B_A1, B_A2 ) open in the same window, but display like a separate, individual doc file with only its own TOC in the Navigation pane (don't know how else to explain it). In other words, clicking on A1, will open the A1 file and display a TOC only listing:

--A1.1

--A1.2

I don't want to open a new window.....I'd like it to replace the current window. It'll have the same styles and skin.....just a new separate TOC in the Navigation pane.

The TOC listed above (1st one) will then be reconfigured to display:

Home

TopicA

--A1

--A2

--A3

TopicB

--B_A1

I looked at Merged Help, but I don't think it will work for this. The examples from Peter's site (thank you very much for these) keep the TOC and don't open new files with a new toc. I looked at Peter's source files and couldn't find an option that would make something like this possible. I hope I'm wrong.

So, my questions are:

1. Is this structure possible in RoboHelp?

2. For Zoom, this means I would probably have to create separate config files, for each "A1 book", then create a categories to search the entire documentation file or just "A1". This may be a nightmare because then I would have to run the indexer on every single "A1 book"...even if there are 30, and even if that particular file hasn't changed, each time we release a new version. (I use the javascript zoom option). Another option is to have 1 search config at the main level and one at each A1 level, without categories. Then the user can search the whole documentation at the main level, but only search sub-topics within the sub-topic. Still need to think about this one...

3. Breadcrumbs....with the new structure, can I configure "Home" to be the one listed in the 2nd TOC (the main toc) ? This means that each Home listed on the sub-topics would refer back to the "main" Home. If not, then maybe an alternative is to add a Home button to my skin linking back to the main Home file.

4. Did I miss any other considerations?

I would like to add a "bookmark this page" link on my webhelp skin. I've tried several scripts, but none of them work properly. I haven't been able to find any info on this....

1. Does Robohelp/Webhelp support this function with an easy "couple of clicks" creation?

2. If not, has someone been able to successfully add a "bookmark this page" function?

Resizing .png images

Hi,

I have many .png images in several files and I am unable to resize them using the resizing tool (click & drag to resize). Does anyone have another way to resize these images, besides opening them and saving them in the correct size? Some images are used in several places and while one image size works in one file, it does not work in another. I'm afraid I'm going to have to maintain duplicate images.

I thought about saving the .png file into a different format, but that degrades the image some.....

CSS Issues

Hi,

First - I'm having a problem with the search feature of this forum. I tried to search for an answer to my question to avoid a double-post, but I received zero results regardless of the search term! And yes, I even searched for css...and received no matches.

Now my question,

How can I get RoboHelp to, by default, apply a defined css style as a <div> tag? Each time I apply a style, it becomes a <p class> and therefore I cannot add other elements inside this tag.

For example, I want to apply <div class="note"> then create a <ul> list inside the div tag. I'm able to hand-code this in my document, but I don't want to keep switching back and forth between design and html mode multiple times if I don't have to.

What am I missing? Did I fail to set something up correctly?

I have RH8 and noticed the html "image map" functionality does not work in a generated a Word document and/or a PDF document. Can someone confirm this is correct? I looked around for some kind of setting, but I can't find one.

Webhelp/Custom Skins

Hi,

I'm feeling very restricted in using Robohelp to create my own skin and have spent too much time tweaking things only to find out it's not quite what I'm looking for. I've reviewed the Skinny on Skins (which is very helpful!) and incorporated some of the very helpful suggestions.

However, I'm at the point now where I just want to start over from scratch and build it from the ground up; my patience and time is running short. I reviewed the Xara site, suggested by other posters here and Rick Stone (Skinny on Skins) and I think Xara's Menu Creator might fit my needs instead of Web Designer (formerly WebStyle) because,really, I just need the menus.

Has anyone here used Xara Menu Creator?

Zoom Search + Highlight, Exclude Bookmarks

Hi,

I've used Zoom Search for about 2 years with few Homesite HTML projects and am now incorporating Zoom Search into a Robohelp project. So far, so good.

I've followed Peter's suggestions, tweaked for my needs. Again, so far, so goo. I added the highlighting option (jump to match and highlight search words). It works as expected, but I'm having an issue that it's highlighting bookmarks, when the search terms matches a word in the bookmark. This isn't ideal, and it causes a big issue when the matched search word is in the bookmark and at the bottom of the page. The "jump" in this case stops at the top of the page because the bookmark is the first occurrence of the word. Technically, this is correct, but from a user's perspective, it's not so great.

To exclude portions of the page from being indexed by Zoom one uses the  and  tags, which works as expected with RoboHelp. My issue is that the bookmark code does not appear in the html file, so I can't even exclude it. Any suggestions?

I was going to post this in Zoom's forum, but I have a feeling they'll tell me to ck in with Robohelp.

RoboHelp 8 HTML/TOC Levels/Topic Names

Hi,

I'm a new user to Robohelp HTML 8.

I have several HTML files (created in Homesite 5.5) that I have imported into Robohelp. Headings are defined as <h1> <h2> and <h3>.

I have two issues (so far) relating to TOCs that I have been unable to solve.

1. The name that displays in the TOC listing is the name of the link and not the name of the topic. For example, in <h1><a name="ovr">Overview</a></h1>, the TOC displays "ovr" when I want it to display "Overview".

2. Robohelp doesn't seem to recognize the differences between <h1>, <h2> and <h3>. All headings are at the same level. I have been unable to locate a screen or setting I can use to configure the TOC. Is there one?

I realize that the files I am importing need a lot of tweaking for RoboHelp. They were used differently, and right now, I'm just trying to determine the scope of my nightmare :-)
