You control how Flash Player displays your SWF in a web page by using attributes of the <OBJECT> tag in your html. These are essentially predefined variable=value pairs that you place inside the <OBJECT> tag inside the HTML page that contains your SWF file.

The <OBJECT> tag looks like this. The attributes in this example are in red:

</object>

Many of these attributes can be set in the Publish Settings dialog box in Flash Pro and are then added the HTML files that Flash Pro generates for you when you use the Publish command. And of course you can also add attributes to your HTML manually.

FYI, cool approach to teaching AS3

Ryan Hodson has created a really interesting set of tutorials about AS3 for beginners. He does something different that some of you might find engaging and even fun as you go about learning language concepts.

He basically has you learn AS by typing in Flash. You have to learn some conventions that he uses in the tutorials, but they are simple and worth the first 3 minutes of reading. Then you’re off to the races. He has you type things into Flash and then see what happens very quickly.

For example, the first instruction is to type

trace(“Hello, World!”);

in the Actions Panel and then test your movie. Then he has you see if you can figure out how to change the message “Hello, World” to something else, with an option to show the answer if you want more help. Sounds pretty simple huh? I think some learners will really respond to this style of teaching. I’ve already linked to the tutorials in the Help, but I’m hoping more people will find the tutorials and take advantage of them. Let Ryan and me know what you think of them.

Basically, you define the variables and their values within an optional attribute of the HTML <Object> tag called FlashVars. The <Object> tag is the one you use to embed a SWF file in a web page. Then you use ActionScript to access the variables within the SWF file.

Flash Pro creates HTML wrapper files for you when you use the File > Publish command, assuming you have the HTML Wrapper format selected in the Publish settings of your FLA file.

However, these HTML wrapper files only contain the <Object> tag code to embed your SWF file. If you want to embed your SWF file in an existing HTML page that contains other elements, you can copy and paste the appropriate HTML code into the appropriate location within your existing HTML page. You can also use Dreamweaver to add the SWF file to the page.

The TechNote Object tag syntax contains sample HTML code that you can copy and paste, along with instructions on how to edit the code to account for the actual name and location of your SWF file.

New video tutorial: Using CSS stylesheets with TLF text

Paul Trani posted a new video to Adobe TV last week titled CSS Stylsheets with TLF Text.

Here are the basics that it covers:

The basic requirements are as follows:

     - You need a CSS file that contains your style definitions. (Just a text file with a .css filename extension)
     - An URLLoader instance
     - An URLRequest instance
      - A function that gets called when the COMPLETE event fires from the URLLoader. This function is where you will apply the style sheet to the text.

Here are the basic steps:

     1. Create CSS text file with style definitions
     2. In ActionScript, create an URLLoader instance.
     3. Create an URLRequest instance.
     4. Add an event listener for the URLLoader instance’s Event.COMPLETE event.
     5. In the function that’s called when the COMPLETE event fires, create a new StyleSheet instance.
     6. Call the parseCSS method on the URLLoader data (which contains the stylesheet).
     7. Apply the style sheet to the text instance.
     8. Apply individual styles from the style sheet to the text in the text instance.

Note that there is a code error in the video at 3:20 that gets corrected later at 6:55. (The line css.parseCSS(fl_TextURLRequest_3.data) should be css.parseCSS(fl_TextLoader_3.data).

Last week I added a new, commented code sample to this very highly visited TechNote, along with a set of sample files. I have also revised the text so that it is hopefully easier to understand.

A bunch of users who visited the TechNote were having some pretty obvious follow-up questions that weren’t answered by the TechNote as it was, such as:

How do I load more than one SWF?

The most likely thing is that the divider bar between the preview pane and the list of presets has somehow been moved down far enough that there's no longer any room in the panel to display the list. Try un-docking the panel, dragging the bottom of the panel downward to show the list below the preview pane, and then moving the divider upward so the preview pane only takes up a reasonable amount of space in the panel. It's also possible the XML file that populates the panel's list has been deleted, but very unlikely. Try the resizing first.

Here are a few hand-picked resources for getting started with AS3 that hopefully will give new users confidence to try ActionScript and to know that they are looking at some of the best resources for learning it. These are all video tutorials.

Code Snippets and AS3 enhancements – Code snippets were introduced in Flash Pro CS5 and provide pre-written code that you can apply as a way to get a lot of basic functionality implemented without learning really any code. They are also a great way to begin learning ActionScript 3.0 because they are very small in most cases and reading them will quickly begin to shed some light on the conventions that are used.
ActionScript 3.0 101 – Flash Downunder – In this one, Paul Burnett gives a nice long intro lesson covering a lot of the basics. He’s a really good instructor with a good pace.
Building an application – This is a quick lesson by Todd Perkins that gives a basic intro to some must-have concepts, including event listeners and stop() actions.
ActionScript 101 with Doug Winnie – This is Doug’s show on Adobe TV. There are many, many episodes that go from the basic to more specific topics. Most of the episodes are 5-7 minutes long. A great free resource from a very good teacher with a manageable pace. Note that the episodes are listed in reverse chronological order (newest first) on the Adobe TV page.

In this set of tutorials, Ryan Hodson takes an interesting and interactive apporach to teaching AS3. This will get you typing ActionScript in Flash right away:

Adobe is looking for participants for a brief (~1 hour) online work observation and interview. Compensation will be a $100 Amazon gift card.

The studies involve users who are in the beginning/novice stages of learning Flash Professional, or more experienced users who have not yet done the workflows being studied.

There are two sets of criteria, each applying to a different study. Please read the criteria carefully before responding. Also, it is important to indicate in the subject line of your response which one of the two studies you meet the criteria for and wish to participate in.

For the video study, participants must meet the following criteria:
- some experience with Flash CS4
- some experience viewing video on the Web
- no experience using video in Flash
- have any version of Creative Suite 4 or Flash Professional CS4 installed (with most recent updates) on a computer that can be connected to the Internet
- ability and willingness to install and use Acrobat Connect on the same computer as the above software
- a 90-minute block of free time between 10:00 and 16:00 Pacific Time (GMT-8) on a weekday during the first two weeks of August (3August-14August).
