Finally Found Answer To My Color Mismatch Issues

For those that might come across this I thought I'd post my findings.

It turns out that I had my colorspace set to Prophoto RGB since I standardized on that for my images in Photoshop and had it set that way in Bridge's color settings. I didn't think an RGB setting would affect color panels (e.g. Color Guide) if I was using North American SWOP v2 profile for my CMYK documents but it does. When I changed the RGB profile setting to sRGB, the panel colors looked fine again in my CMYK document. If I create an RGB document, then Prophoto RGB works again as expected.

My best guess for this would be that since we use RGB monitors, Illustrator accesses the RGB profile for display and if it's wider than the document profile, Illustrator loses it's color cookies.

Need To Erase Cloud Settings

I have been having difficulty with colors matching in the panels (e.g. red looks brown) and after reading about another user who corrected his issue by creating another user account, I decided to try deleting the Illustrator 18 folders in the user preferences and application support areas. Lo and behold, the colors were correct.

Now the problem: As soon as I sync, whatever was causing the problem is placed back on my computer from the settings that were stored on the cloud and the colors are bad again. How do I keep the cloud settings from getting back onto my computer?

Join Tool Question

I just tried the Join tool on a path I created with the Pencil tool and to my surprise, it would not join the path. Shouldn't it have been able to close the path?

Have used the Join tool on paths which I created with the Pen tool and never had a problem.

Astute Graphics Plug Ins Question

I am wondering if any of you use them and which one(s) you find the most useful.

Compound Path Question

Aside from using them to cut holes in shapes, are there any other reasons to create a compound path? They seem to be similar to a grouping paths so I just wondered.

Color Guide Color Display Issue?

I have an oddity I noticed in the Color Guide panel. I included a screen shot to show what I see (Color Guide panel on left, Swatches on right). I chose the red from the Brights color group included with Illustrator. When I display the Color Guide panel next to the Swatches panel, you will see that the group in the Swatches matches the harmony in Color Guide. Now the oddity: Look at what Illustrator displays as the base color patch in the Color Guide panel - it is a rusty color instead of the same red. Now look at the middle column which should match the harmony swatches and they are all darker!? If you select the red patch, it will color the artwork to match but it displays oddly in the panel.

Hardware & 3D Question

Never experienced this before so I am hoping someone with hardware experience might verify what I think might be happening.

I have a 2009 MacPro dual 2.93 with 16gb RAM and an ATI Radeon 4870 card with 512mb VRAM. I have 2 displays connected to it: a 27" and a 21". Up to now things have been OK but today while doing Deke's Illustrator class on Lynda.com, I had problems when I got to a 3D example (Egyptian tomb with shooting star). In the course, I was supposed to rotate a few words on the face of the tomb which had been converted to outlines instead of live text. I set the dialog to match his numbers but when it came time to rotate the paths, Illustrator went just so far and the progress bar seemed to stop cold. After about 1 minute, I cancelled the rotation.

I then tried with a simple rectangle and it worked. Then I tried "The First" in point text using Myriad Pro 80pt and that worked. Then I tried "The First Time", but it stopped just as it did with Deke's lesson.

So the question is, does this sound like my graphics card is just underpowered and running out of VRAM?

Illustrator 2014 & Bracket Key Issue?

Seems the bracket keys are not adjusting the stroke weight for me. I replaced Illustrator preferences, disabled system shortcuts, replaced Wacom preferences, disconnected and reconnected the keyboard and restarted the computer but they still don't work. They do work correctly for Photoshop CC 2014 though and any other shortcut I tried for Illustrator worked.

MacPro 2009, 16gb RAM, OSX 10.9.4

Problems With Blob Brush & Wacom?

I am new to Illustrator and have a 2009 MacPro running OS 10.9.4 with Wacom driver 6.3.8-2 and when I go into the Blob brush controls, all the popup menus for size etc. only have Fixed and Random active and all the other items are grayed out. It's the same issue wether I am on CC or CC 2014. I tried replacing the pref file for CC 2014 and it made no difference. Is there a setting I am missing?

Application Manager Oddity

I experienced something odd with the Application Manager from my CS6 installation. Before today's installation, it would appear on the menubar showing updates were available. I would go to the Cloud Desktop App and update the app(s). When the updating was done, the CS6 Application Manager would be taken off the menubar. Today, I updated Photoshop and the Cloud Desktop App showed the update was done, Photoshop indicated 14.1.1 but the CS6 Application Manager remained on the mnubar showing one update available. I tried unchecking Show In Menubar pref in the Application Manager but it still remained on the menubar. Shortly after, while I was looking something up in Safari, my computer froze and when I rebooted, the Application Manager was removed from the menubar but now my Home feed in the Cloud Desktop App says it's empty?

Will the Cloud Desktop App handle updating my CS6 apps as well as the CC apps? If so, is there a way to disable the Application Manager from CS6?

Why Only One Or All?

I am primarily concerned with photography but I am also interested in learning Illustrator, InDesign and Acrobat. Previously, I would get Lightroom and Design Standard Suite and I'd have everything I needed. Now, I have to subscribe to the entire cloud to get the 5 apps I want. Realistically, I don't see me learning or needing the rest of the apps the cloud offers and I wonder if Adobe considered people who only need a limited selection of apps. It just doesn't seem reasonable for someone to pay for things they aren't going to use. I read today's blog post and this issue wasn't mentioned as a concern for Adobe.

A Few LR4 Printing Questions

Have a few questions pertaining to the new features in v4:

1. In the past we created layouts with all the page and print settings embedded. Is the recommended workflow now to just create the layout with the page settings and then create a saved print collection with the print settings?

2. If you create a virtual copy and put that through soft proofing and make settings, is the paper profile you used for those settings embedded in the virtual copy?

3. If the paper profile is embedded in your proof copy and you accidently add it to a print collection which has a different profile specified, which profile setting takes precedence (or do you get an error alert)?

LR 4 Metadata Status Is Conflict Detected Oddity

I set up a smart collection with the setting of Metadata Status Is Conflict Detected and for some reason the collection has virtual copies in it which I created for darkening skies and such. I have no idea why virtual copies would be considered in conflict with files on the HD.

Is this a bug?

Entered Numbers Not Visible During Entry

Have a oddity on my Mac: If I try to type in values for the sliders in the Develop module, they dissapear duing entry.

1. Click on an enterable area for a slider. The text highlights.

2. Type in a value. Value is still visible.

3. As soon as the slider moves to the entered value, the text dissapears. It looks like it changes to the normally displayed gray value.

4. Tab out or click outside the area and all goes back to normal.

Color Spaces And Virtual Copies

If you make a virtual copy and then change the color space in the original, does the virtual copy retain the color space that was set at time of it's creation or is it changed to match the new color space of the original?

Smart Object And Action Question

I have a smart object layer in one document and I want to drag it over to another document and record this in an action. If I just drag it over, the action records it as select previous document. Copy and paste doesn't transfer the layer as a smart object.

Is there any way to do this in an action?

LR Not Doing As Expected With Keywords

Maybe I am misunderstanding something here, but it is my understanding that if you uncheck Export for a keyword, it doesn't get written to the files on disk. So I created a keyword with export unchecked and assigned it to some images to use with a smart collection. Every image that had that keyword assigned was flagged with the update down arrow in the upper right corner. So I clicked on one to see what would happen and for some unknown reason (at least to me), the keyword was written out to the file. I verified this by opening the image in Photoshop and checking the info for the image.

Explanations??

CS Live Services Update For CS5 Fails

Hi,

Who do I check with when a CS Live update for CS5 fails? This is the first update that has failed. I just tried using the Adobe Updater and also downloading the update from Adobe's site. The updater indicated Bridge and CS Live updates were available and worked fine for Bridge 4.0.3.

I checked the Updater preferences and report to Adobe on failure was checked but I thought maybe a followup message might be in order.

CS5 Live Update Still Failing

Keyword Auto Complete Q

I am at a loss to figure out why when I type keywords into the entry area that LR stopped trying to auto completing them. The keywords exist already and I have offer suggestions from recently entered values checked in the catalog settings. There don't appear to be any other keyword settings in preferences or catalog settings that might affect this.

What am I missing?

LR 2.5 running in 64 bit, 10.5.8, MacPro dual quad 2.93, 16gb RAM

Sequence Number By Date Option For File Naming

I would like to see Lightroom have the option to have the sequence numbers be reset when the date changes and increment accordingly. For example, I have the file naming set to use Date (YYYYMMDD) Sequence Number (0001) and the sequence number starting at 1. As Lightroom is now I will end up with 200909010001, 200909010002, 200909020003, 200909020004, 200909030005 200909030006 etc. and what I would like to see is the option for 200909010001, 200909010002, 200909020001, 200909020002, 200909030001 200909030002.

This would make it much faster for renaming or import when using this combination of date and sequence in file names.

Pen Tool Question

As a general rule, when you want to use the pen tool to create a precise selection, do you create the path at the very edge of the area you are selecting or just inside the area? If it is inside the area, by how many pixels? And then do you feather by that same number of pixels?

Save As TIF vs. PSD?

In a mood to experiment, I saved a 495mb 20 layer PSD file as TIF and found that it is about 3x faster on the saving but at the same time it uses over twice the disk space.

Other than speed in saving, are there any other advantages to saving files as TIF? Has anyone converted over to saving all their files in TIF format?
