Random slides (questions)

Hi,

I know variations of this question has been asked but I haven't been able to find an answer that fits my situation. Hopefully someone here can help! (Rod I'm looking at you). I am creating a piece of software that consists of sets of questions that students can complete. So they choose a topic and it gives them questions to practice and questions to test. Now I know the easy way to do this is with question pools and random questions and I REALLY want to use that option as it seems by far the easiest in that regard but once I put questions into a question pool I lose so much customisation. For example, I can't change the progress indicator or default button look through the Quiz preferences any more. It works perfectly if the slides are in the standard filmstrip but if they're in a question pool it just stays with the default. I can change the buttons by going into each question in the question pool but not as a group by using quiz preferences. Hope this is making sense so far!

Also when I use standard slides I can use a text entry box which gives me the option of having a short answer question that has the focus of the cursor in the entry box immediately. In a question slide the student has to click into the box before they can start typing.

Here's the questions I need help with:

Why do (some of) the quiz preference settings not update on question slides that are in a question pool? For example, progress indicator stays at "Question x of x", not "Question x" which is what I want

How do I change what the default button is for a question slide if it's not through the quiz settings without going into every single slide and customising each button? (Even selecting all the buttons one one slide only changes one at a time)

If the answer to the above question is "You can't" then, how can I set up my slides so that when they click "Start" it sends them to 12 slides out of a possible 24. I've been looking at the javascript in the correct answer in this thread: Randomize slides with JavaScript (or Advanced Actions)? but I haven't had much luck here. Is this even the right road I'm going down?

I'm really hoping that this is just me being completely blonde and there's an easy answer! I really can't understand why settings that work perfectly fine in the standard slides or question slides won't work if the slide is moved to a question pool.

Thanks in advance

Jo

Text entry focus and submit button - Question Slides-Captivate 8

Hi,

I am creating a series of short answer questions in a quiz using a question pool as I want random questions each time for the learner. How do you set the focus of the slide to be the text entry box (where the cursor is so they can start typing) on a question slide? I also want them to be able to submit the question by pressing Enter, not clicking Submit. I know how to do this using a text entry box on a standard slide but as I want to be able to get the user to be given random questions I need it to be in a question pool. Can anyone help me with how to do this?

Either: set focus of a text entry box and have onkeyenter for the submit button

Or: replicate a question pool using standard slides so I can have random questions generated for the users (say 5 questions picked randomly from a set of 10).

Edited to add: I am happy to use advanced actions and java scripts etc if need be

Thanks

Jo
