Button Sizes

Does anyone know how to change the button sizes for the images used in the Function bar and Sidebar? The Layout Customisation screen states the images must be a certain size (e.g. 30x22 pixels) but I want to use my own sized buttons which are 84x42 pixels. I also want to remove the padding around the buttons. I've had a look in main.css, but I can't find anywhere that controls this. It must be "baked" into the responsive layout somewhere.

Removing breadcrumbs from home page

I apply breadcrumbs through the WebHelp Settings screen when I compile. This method applies them to every topic. However, it don't want to display them on my home page. Does anyone know if it's possible to remove breadcrumbs from an individual page after compilation?

Date and Timestamp not updating

Following on from my previous posts, the date and timestamp of updated files are not being updated in RoboSource Control, i.e. the Modified column in the RoboSource Control Explorer. However, it looks like changes are being stored on the server when topics are checked in, as I can right-click a file in source control that I have changed, choose View, and see the amendments in the HTML.

Basically, this means that source control isn't recognising that files have changed and therefore when someone tries to get the latest version it doesn’t think there is one because the date and time are the same as previous version.

Has anyone experienced this behaviour before or know why the Modified column has suddenly stopped being updated?

File status "New version available" - UPDATED

We've been using RoboSource Control successfully for the last 12 months, but recently we've noticed that on the File Status tab in RH a large number of files have a status of "New version available". In addition, we've noticed today that the link between our projects and RSC is no longer working. The strange thing is that my colleagues and I can still open projects that are in RSC, and get the latest versions, but it still thinks there are newer versions available and any changes we make aren't being reflected on the server, i.e. we can't see each other's changes. I've tried disconnecting one of our projects from RSC and re-adding it, but it makes no difference.

Has anyone encountered this behaviour before?

We've been upgraded to Windows 8 recently and we've also upgraded our projects from RH10 to RH11. Could this be a factor?

Any help would be much appreciated.

UPDATE: It looks like the changes are being updated on the server, as I can right-click a file in source control that I have changed, choose View, and see the amendments in the HTML. What's happening is the date and timestamp of the updated files are not being updated, so I'm guessing that because of this, source control doesn't recognise that files have changed. This means that when someone tries to get the latest version it doesn’t think there is one. Is it possible that a setting on the server could have changed to prevent the date and timestamp from being updated?

Opening a project from version control

This may be related to my previous post (File Status "New version available") but I am now unable to open a project from version control using the padlock button in RoboHelp's Open Project dialog box. It lets me select a project to open, but then just sits there, not doing anything.

Footer image not resizing in printed documentation

Does anyone know why an image inserted into a footer master page is not automatically resizing to the width of the printed page when applied to a print layout and output to Word? If you insert an image into the body of a topic or a master page and generate printed documentation, the image automatically resizes.

I'm trying to insert a high-res footer image (300 dpi) into my footer so that it appears on every page, but at the moment it's being embedded at full-size.

Changing RoboHelp File Association

TCS5 | Windows 8.1

My laptop's been rebuilt, so I've installed TCS5 and then re-installed TCS4. However, because I've done it in this order RoboHelp projects are defaulting to RH10 when opened, as opposed to RH11. I've tried changing the association through the usual "Open with" option, but it doesn't make any difference. Is there a way I can force projects to open in RH11 by default without having to uninstall everything and starting again?

Navigation pane not showing in merged output on server (IE9)

We've moved our WebHelp outputs from an externally maintained server to an in-house server, but the left-hand navigation pane isn't displaying in our merged Help system. In our user guide (which isn't merged) the pane displays fine, but in our release notes (which is a merged system) it doesn't want to show itself. The main navigation pane and topic pane are fine, it's just the left-hand navigation pane that's blank.

I'm running IE9, but the weird thing is that it displays correctly in Firefox. It also works when run locally.

Both Help systems worked absolutely fine on the previous server, so I'm wondering if there's a conflict with something else that's running on the new server (e.g. our website's CMS, etc.) or whether it's a permissions thing?

My issue seems similar to other posts on here, but I'm using IE9 not IE11.

I'd be grateful for any ideas.

CSS3 in standard WebHelp

Copying projects in source control

We've recently implemented RoboSource Control and I'm hoping someone can tell me how to copy a project that it is already under its control. With each version of our software we need to duplicate the previous version's projects so that we can use them as the basis of the current version.

I had been told that I could open a project from version control to a different folder, remove it from version control, and then add it back into version control to a different folder. This, in theory, should give a duplicate copy. However, the removing from version control bit deletes the original project from version control, not the copy. You then have add both projects back into version control to their respective folders, which is not desirable.

Is there an easier (or correct) way to do this?

Shared Location when using RoboSource Control

We've recently implemented RoboSource Control with RH10 and have a multi-author environment. Does anyone know if it's possible to maintain a shared location of common resources, e.g. style sheet, etc? I've always used RoboHelp's Shared Locaton feature when I've worked independently, but now we're working as a team it's more difficult.

We've tried creating a shared location on the network, but this impacted the performance of RoboHelp as we are remote workers. We've also tried pointing to a shared location locally on our laptops, but each time files are checked in it updates rhsharedresource.apj. For example, user A sets the shared location to C:\Users\joe.bloggs\Documents\My RoboHelp Projects\Shared Files\, but when user B "gets" the latest files from the server the links are broken because they're not Joe Bloggs!

There may be a correct method or it simply may not be possible.

I'd be grateful for any advise.

How many RoboHelp Server licences?

I'm hoping that someone can clarify for me whether multiple authors can publish to a single installation of RoboHelp Server 9 at the same time using RoboHelp 10? Adobe are telling me that I need 3 server licences to do this, which increases the cost significantly. I was under the impression that a single RoboHelp Server would facilitate a multi-author environment, across multiple Help systems.

Controlling the Navigation Pane from Topic links

I've followed Rick Stone's instructions (in his Skinny on Skins tips file) for controlling the navigation pane from topic links, but I've included the reference to whtbar.js in my Master Page (as I want it to be available to all my topics) instead of in a single topic in my WebHelp output. It works fine, however, I'm experiencing a page flicker whenever I click a link which opens the TOC, Index, Glossary, etc. Does anyone know if this can be avoided?

Multiple CSS files in a project

Does anyone know if it's possible to include more than one CSS file in a project? For ease of maintenance, I'd like to split my default.css into individual files, for example, a main.css (which has @imports and is referenced in my topics), a typography.css, a structure.css, a lightbox.css, etc, etc. I've had a play around with this and it appears to work, however, when I try to close my project RoboHelp gets upset and freezes.

Search results not displaying all topics

When I search in my merged HTML Help system locally it returns numerous results. However, when I perform the exact same search out on a client's site it only returns a handful of results. All the appropriate Help files are there. Has anyone seen this behaviour before and how can I resolve it?

Generated PDF substituting font

When I generate a PDF of any topic by previewing it (in RoboHelp), right-clicking, selecting Print and then Adobe PDF in the Print dialog box, the output is substituting my normal font Tahoma for Courier. However, it leaves anything in bold type. See the screenshot below:

This is a fresh install of Technical Communications Suite 3 on a new laptop and it's the first time I've produced a PDF this way.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Adobe RoboHelp 9 has stopped working

I've copied an existing project and applied a new stylesheet. This has involved multiple "find and replace" actions in order to change old styles to my new styles. All was going well - everything looked fine and the project compiled without a problem. However, after further changes the compile has stopped working. As I start compiling the following message appears as the process starts updating files "Adobe RoboHelp 9 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I've tried deleting the CPD file, but it doesn't make any difference. I've also tried removing the last topics I've worked on, but again it's just the same.

Does anyone have any ideas? I've spent over a day re-styling the project and don't want to lose what I've done.

Breadcrumb spacing

The breadcrumbs in my published output are displayed 12px higher than when I view my output locally. I've tried playing with my style sheet, but I can't work out what is causing it. I've included 2 screenshots below to show the subtle difference. Any ideas?

Outline around selected TOC items

I've just installed IE9 and when I launch my published WebHelp and select a link in the table of contents, it displays a dotted outline around the selected item. This never happened with IE8, so I was wondering if there's anyway to prevent it? Is it possible to add "outline:none" somewhere in the RoboHelp output (like you would when styling a link in CSS) so that it doesn't appear?

Styling Text-only Popups

Publishing has been cancelled

Merged WebHelp | RH9

When attempting to publish my merged WebHelp the publish stops everytime with the message "Publishing has been cancelled. Failed to create file: xxxxx". The file is different everytime I publish. The publish has been working fine so I'm not sure why it's suddenly stopped.

Does anyone know why this is occurring?

Custom Breadcrumb Home Link

Does anyone know if it's possible to hard-code the URL used by the breadcrumb Home link?

The reason I ask is that when I launch a child project and click Home I'd like RH to display the default topic for my merged WebHelp, but with the full merged TOC, instead of just displaying the default topic and retaining the TOC of the child project?

Style sheet not being used

I have a project which I'm outputting to Adobe AIR, but it's not using the styles I've defined in the CSS. If I preview the topics in RoboHelp 8 they look fine, but in the AIR application it's not rendering the styles correctly. Has anyone come across this before or is this just a "feature" of AIR?

Show Merged TOC in Child Project

I'm producing merged WebHelp (using Peter Grainge's merged WebHelp instructions) and would like to be able to show the full table of contents if child projects are opened directly, i.e. other than through the parent project. There is an option in the WebHelp Settings pane, under Navigation, called Show Merged TOC in Child Project but I cannot get it to work. I've tried setting it in the parent and child projects, but it makes no difference.

Has anyone used this setting successfully?

FTS results - column widths

Does anyone know if it's possible to specify the width of the Title and Rank columns which display the FTS results? At the moment they look like they're 50/50. I'd like to make the Title column as wide as possible and squeeze the Rank column up. Also, can I change the symbol used to sort the columns to an image?

Auto-stretch contents pane? Possible?

Another customisation question if I may...

I have a custom button on my toolbar that hides the navpane (it uses the script "javascript:showHidePane()"). My navpane has a fixed width of 200px and my contents pane has a fixed width of 760px (thats 960px in total ;-)). When the custom button is clicked and the navpane closes is there any way to make the contents pane automatically resize to the full width available (i.e. 960px) and when either the Contents, Index or Search buttons are clicked (to redisplay the navpane) the contents pane shrinks back to 760px?

Putting the TOC, Index & FTS in the content pane

This might sound a bit mad and it's probably not possible, but I'm going to ask anyway. Does anyone know if it's possible to display the table of contents, index, and search in the content pane instead of the navigation pane?

I've centred my topic content (using body { width: 960px; margin: 0 auto; } in my style sheet), so I'd like to sit the TOC, Index and FTS next to it instead of way off over to the left-hand side where it currently is.

Specifiying the toolbar width and alignment (RH9)

In RH9 is it possible to set the width of the main toolbar in WebHelp and centre align it? I've got some buttons on the left and some others "pushed" to the right using blankblock in the whstart.js file. By default it uses the full width of the browser window, but I'd like to specifiy, say 960 pixels and centred, so that it matches the fixed width and centred position I've set for my topic content.

Spacing in Search and Index panes

Please could someone advise me how to add padding to the Search and Index panes? I've edited the whthost.js file to apply spacing to the Table of Contents and that worked fine. However, I've tried editing the whfhost.js and whihost.js files in the same place for the Search and Index panes respectively, but changes to these files don't affect the output.

PS. I'm using RH8 and outputting to WebHelp.

Why does RoboEngine spoil TOC spacing?

Whenever I publish WebHelp to RoboEngine 4 the TOC never looks exactly like it does when run locally. It throws all the spacing out. TOCs that look absolutely fine, end up with extra spacing around them which impacts on the alignment of icons and TOC entries. Here's what I mean:

- Run locally
- Run from server

Does anyone know why this happens?

Mouse Starting Location

Is it possible to have a different starting location for the mouse? I've inserted a mouse on one slide and set the starting point (by dragging the blue line), but when I insert a mouse on my next slide it does let me set the starting point. It assumes that the starting point is the finishing point of the mouse on the previous slide, although I haven't clicked the "Align to Previous Slide" option.

Can anyone help please?

Quaility of text

I might be doing something wrong, but the text in my Captivate project looks fine when I preview it but when I publish and view it the quality/clarity of the text is poor. My project is set to High (24-bit), JPEGs set to 100% and I've unticked the "Compress SWF file" option, but I'm disappointed with the end result. It's seems like everything is still being compressed.

Can anyone tell me how to get the best results?

Feedback form script in RH8

My form (see below) triggers a PHP script (see below) which is supposed to send the form data to my email address. It works perfectly in a regular web page, but when I've integrated into my WebHelp project the form fails to send anything and show a series of PHP errors (see below). Master Page changes not updating topics (RH8)

I have a number of Master Pages which are applied to various topics, but when I make a change to any of them the changes are not reflected in the topics associated with them. I've checked that the Master Pages are attached to the appropriate topics, which they are, but the topics are not being updated. Has anyone seen this problem before or is it down to corruption in my Help project?

HTML Help to HTML Help links (RH8)

I'm trying to create a text link from a page in one CHM file to open another CHM file in a new window. Ideally, I'd like to show a specific page in the second CHM too.

I've been playing around with <ms-its:MY.chm::/MyTopic.htm> and <mk:@MSITStore:MY.chm::/MyTopic.htm> but no joy. I've also tried using a SHORTCUT button but still no joy.

More than one drop-down hotspot style

Is it possible to have more than one style for drop-down hotpspots? I'd like the default one to use twisties and a second one not. I intend to use the twistie version for my top level drop-downs (i.e. titles) and the plain version for inline drop-downs (i.e. those in my text).

I tried duplicating the drop-down hotspot style, amending it and applying it to my inline drop-downs but they don't work.

Any help is much appreciated.

Search not working after converting project from X5 to RH8

The full-text search isn't working after opening my X5 project in RH8 and compiling it. I have a merged Help system - a contents.chm and multiple child .chms - and the search cannot find any topics. However, they can be navigated to in the TOC. I've opened the same Help system compiled using X5 and the search works fine.

Any help is much appreciated.

Adding a link to expand and collapse all DHTML drop downs

Hi, can anyone help me adapt the "Skinny on Skins" example "Add a Toolbar button to expand and collapse all DHTML drop downs" so that it will work with just a simple HTML link in RH8, instead of being attached to a custom skin button?

The example looks like this:

Step 1. Open the Skins Editor for the skin where you want to add the button.

Step 2. After the preview loads into the window, ensure that the Toolbar tab has focus, then click the plus symbol. The Custom Toolbar Item dialog should display.

Step 3. Type the Item Name (This is simply an internal reference for the button).

Step 4. Type the Text (This is the text that will be seen by the end user. The field must contain something. So if you don't want any verbiage to display for your toolbar item, simply type a space.)

Step 5. Choose your Image Options, then click the Action tab.

Step 6. Click the JavaScript option button.

Step 7. Enter the following code in the OnClick field:

javascript:toggle()

Step 8. In the JavaScript area, ensure the Inline JavaScript option button is selected, then click the edit (Pencil) icon located to the right.

Step 9. Enter the following code in the Inline JavaScript dialog

Step 10. Click the OK button to close the Inline JavaScript dialog.

Step 11. Click the OK button to close the Custom Toolbar Item dialog.

Step 12. Click the OK button to close the Skin Editor.

Step 13. Generate WebHelp via File > Generate > WebHelp and ensure that you have the new button selected with a check mark. This will probably require stepping through some screens to see the place where you can select it.
