After applying the fix for the IE 10 problem, no topic is displayed in the right pane

The background:

We create WebHelp using RoboHelp 10.

It's a merged help system that uses a script (from Peter Grainge's site) to redirect from the parent start page to the initial topic.

The help is deployed in a web-based application.

I applied Adobe's fix for the IE 10 display issue (the one that should fix the generated help). Then I regenerated the help and added the updated files to the product build. I'm seeing different behaviors. depending on how I access the build.

Accessing the help from the product:

When I run the product in IE 10 and click the Help button:

The right pane is initially empty and is gray (instead of the default white background):

If you click a topic in the Contents, the right pane doesn't change.

You can do either of the following to display the currently selected topic:

Resize the browser window.

Click a different tab in the navigation pane (Index or Search).

After you take either of those actions, everything seems to work as expected.

Running the help stand-alone:

If I run the generated help by opening the start page in IE 10, the right pane displays the initial topic as expected. However, I still experience the original problem. For example, clicking a link from the search results does not display the topic until the pane is resized.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? As a fall-back, we can add the meta tag to emulate IE 9 to our compiled start page. But, of course, we would prefer a different solution since any post-generation step could be forgotten in the scramble to get a release out.

Thanks,

Melanie

Error when opening files

When I open a ditamap and then open one of the files within the ditamap, the file takes several minutes to open (literally). The Frame console shows why -- it's generating dozens of error messages such as the partial list below.

The files in the error message are all present, so I have no idea why Frame can't find/open them.

Some of the file listed in the message are not referenced by any file in the current ditamap, so I don't know why it's even trying to open them.

There are conrefs to some of the files listed in the message. Once the file has finally opened, these are fine.
ClipboardFormatsPriorities maker.ini setting in Frame 10?

I recently installed Frame 10 and I want to change the ClipboardFormatsPriorities setting so that "TEXT" is the first option in the list. I've done this in previous versions. Is this still possible in 10? If so, what did I do wrong?

Here's what I tried:

Located the maker.ini file in the following directory: C:\Users\mboyd\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\10.

Made a backup of the original maker.ini file.

Opened maker.ini in a text editor and saw that the setting was no longer included.

Tried adding it. I added the following line first to the [Preferences] section and then to the [Frame] section:

ClipboardFormatsPriorities=TEXT, UNICODE TEXT, MIF, RTF

Result: Nothing changed. MIF was still the default when I copied and pasted.

Granted -- changing the default from OLE to MIF was definitely an improvement, but I'd still like the default to be TEXT. Let me know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks!

Melanie

Creating a link in FrameMaker to a topic in a different help project

We are using structured FrameMaker and linking the ditamaps to RoboHelp projects. We have several help projects that are merged. (We've only recently started using this method, and are still getting the kinks worked out.)

Links between topics in the same project work fine. But links to a different help project don't work. The XML from the structured FrameMaker file looks like this:

<linktext >About xPM</linktext>

But when it's brought into the RoboHelp project, the HTML looks like this:

 About xPM

Pretty easy to see why it doesn't work! (BTW, I also tried this using a FrameMaker-style cross-reference. Same results.)

Is there a work-around for this? Some other method for creating the link in FM, or for "hard-coding" the href path? Or is there a setting in RoboHelp that I could change?

If we can't get this to work, I'm afraid we're going to have to abandon our single-sourcing efforts and go back to authoring in RoboHelp.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Index entries not coming over to RoboHelp

I've added index markers to my FrameMaker files, but my RoboHelp index is empty. I'm obviously missing something, but the Adobe help was less than helpful. Could someone fill me in?

We're using Structured FrameMaker 10 to create DITA topics and then linking the ditamap to a RoboHelp 9 project.

Here's what I did:

I added some index markers to my structured FrameMaker files. I tried using both the traditional Frame method and also using the RoboHelp > Apply Index Marker menu option. (I couldn't see a difference in the outcome.)

In RoboHelp's Project Manager under Project Files, I right-clicked my .ditamap file and selected Properties.

On the Content Settings tab I selected Convert Index. Create new associated Index was the only available option, so I entered a name for the new index.
(The ditamap doesn't have a separate index file, but the entries weren't coming over before I selected this, so I thought I'd try it.)

Then I updated the project.
The new index was created, but it didn't contain any entries.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Melanie

Since our file names are lowercase with underscores, users see things like "about_portfolio_optimization" when they do searches.

The following blog indicates that you can select the "Topic Name Marker" option on the Conversion settings dialog to specify the topic title (as well as the file name).
List styles not showing up in Conversion Settings dialog

In linked Frame documents, RoboHelp collapses multi-level unordered lists (bullets and subbullets) to a single flat list. So this in FrameMaker:

Fruit

Vegetables

Carrots

Peas

Becomes this in RoboHelp:

Fruit

Vegetables

Carrots

Peas

This happens when I map both bullet and subbullet styles to "Normal" and choose "Convert Autonumber to HTML List". To resolve this, I can either map my subbullet styles to Source (which has its own issues), or I can map the subbullets to a different paragraph style. So I tried creating a list style. But now I can't select the new style from the Conversion Settings dialog. It doesn't show up in the RoboHelp Style drop-down, and I can't manually enter the style name. It's strange, because my other custom styles are listed.

I've tried switching to a differents CSS file and even restarting RoboHelp, but it's still not reading my changes. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Melanie

Table headings and column/row sizes

I have mapped my FM table format to a table style defined in my CSS. However, I have the following issues with the resulting RoboHelp tables:

I have a header row in the FrameMaker table, but the header doesn't come over into RH. All of the table rows are
instead of
. Therefore, the shading defined in my CSS for the table header row does not appear.

A bunch of inline formatting that I don't want is coming over, defining the table width and the row width and height. Here's an example:

Report/Visualization

Description

Is there any way to get RH to recognize table header rows?

Also, is there any way to prevent the size information from coming over? What I'd like is for the table width to be 100% and the cell widths and heights to be determined by their content (which would happen automatically if the inline formatting weren't added).

If there isn't a way to accomplish this, then I'd probably be better off not trying to map the table styles and just going with "Source". The sizes would still be fixed, but at least the shading would appear.

Xrefs to figure titles in linked FrameMaker files

But cross-references include only the figure number (for example, "as shown in Figure 3").

In my style mappings in RoboHelp, I selected <$paratext> as the RoboHelp style for Figure cross-references. My assumption was that RoboHelp would display the text of the paragraph being referenced. So while my FM document said "as shown in Figure 3", the RH topic would say "as shown in Initial Collector Model".

However, RH is displaying the text from the topic title instead of the figure title, which is, of course, very bad. I tried including the paragraph text in the FM cross-reference format (in addition to figure number), but that didn't make any difference.

Has anyone else seen this issue? Is there a solution?

I've probably made a basic mistake.
Changes to lists when structured topics are sent to RoboHelp

I posted this question in the structured FrameMaker forum, but I probably should have posted it here. When I link structured FrameMaker topics to RoboHelp, unordered list items that contain multiple paragraphs are changes. For example, if I have this in my structured FrameMaker file:

This is the first list item.

This is additional information about the first list item.

This is the second list item.

This is the third list item.

This appears in my RoboHelp HTML project:

This is the first list item.

This is additional information about the first list item.

This is the second list item.

This is the third list item.

I can make the text look OK by defining a "p.indented" format in my .CSS and using that to indent the second paragraph in a list item. But even though it will look OK, the underlying HTML will still be incorrect (two lists instead of one). If anyone has any tips to prevent this from happening, please pass them my way.

Thanks,

Melanie

I mapped my Frame template styles to my RoboHelp .CSS styles. Then I linked to the ditamap from a RoboHelp HTML project. The topics came over and the style mappings work, but any
items with multiple elments are changed. For example, if I have this in my structured FrameMaker file:

This is the first list item.

This is additional information about the first list item.

This is the second list item.

This is the third list item.

I get this in my RoboHelp project:

This is the first list item.

This is additional information about the first list item.

This is the secton list item.

My assumption is that the code could display a specific element from a help topic (for example, an element called "ShortReportDescription" or something). If you've done something like this, how did you accomplish it?

Defining formatting for structured FrameMaker files that will be published in RoboHelp

I've used unstructured FrameMaker for years, but now we're attempting to move to structured authoring (to facilitate content reuse). I just went through the tutorial in Part 1 of "Developing Structured Applications with Adobe FrameMaker 9," which shows how to define formatting within the EDD. When you define formatting this way, it looks like all paragraphs within Frame are tagged as "Body" and the formatting is derived from the EDD.

I've also gone through the exercise of mapping Frame styles to elements in our RoboHelp CSS and publishing a Frame book in RH. My assumption is that if I put our formatting definitions in the EDD, I cannot map styles to the RH CSS. Is this true? If not, what am I missing? Or if so, can someone point me to instructions for defining traditional Frame paragraph tags for use with an EDD?

Thanks!

Melanie
