One Topic with Some Dead mini-TOC Links in RH8

We have a topic with many tables, all placed under H2 sections. Of the mini-TOC's nine H2 headings, the first six titles in the Show drop-down are properly linked, whereas the last three are not (just dead text strings).

I've compared the code in this topic to other similar topics, but have found no issues with tables, styles, navigations, etc. The only thing I've keyed on, is that most of the 3-column tables have one or more rows in which columns 2 and 3 are merged. This penultimate&last-column-merge issue has cropped up in the forums before, but not recently and not associated with mini-TOCs AFAIK.

Might this be the issue? If not, I'd rather not restructure all of them for nothing. Any thoughts on this situation?

Duplicate SPAN tags are not new in V9

Contrary to the broadcast announcement about the new DLL being offered, the SPAN tags problem is not new in RH 9. However, what I've seen is more of a random insertion process (going from one or two instances in a topic to a dozen or more) than one of SPAN duplication for the same string.

I've encountered the issue in 8.0.2.208, and have simply removed them in the code and saved the topic before exiting HTML View. Just another adorable little RH quirk...

Leave my unordered lists alone, Adobe!

You'd think that by Version 8 (their third iteration since taking over), Adobe would know enough not to arbitrarily change UL lists to OL lists! NoooOOOOOooooo!

Having seen this idiocy before, I've taken to opening certain topics in HTML View only. However, it seems that any peripheral functions will activate this unwanted list rewrite. For example, I just assigned a CBT to a topic while I had it open in HTML View, and RH changed all my ULs to OLs (I don't know if this would have happened if the topic were not open, but I don't dare test that). Since I had added a ton of these UL lists in this topic to create three-level CSS/JavaScript drop-down menus, this is a major deal.

What I had not fully realized until now with this UL-to-OL rewrite, is that RH also adds these ridiculous positioning elements (I mean, I had seen them before, but thought them inconsequential because there were only a few). It seems that in its infinite wisdom RH is actually taking no chances that the browser might not place these brand new ordered list items one beneath the other. For example:

Look, Adobe, I don't mind that AIR, multi-level lists, and table styles still don't work; I just don't use them, so they cause me no grief. But overwriting my code like this is truly unacceptable! Why in heaven's name would you think you know better than me what type of list I want?

You should be providing immediate help for this (a script, an RH upgrade, and a week in Aruba). I will not be entering a bug report, since all my other bug/wish enties have gone totally ignored over the last seven years. I'm just venting here, before I start repairing this ridiculous RH behavior (darned good thing I have FAR to help me cope with it).

Placeholders in header section of topic page?

Merged WebHelp

Has anyone figured a workaround for getting placeholders (breadcrumbs, mini-TOC) into the header section of a topic page, standard or master? (The placeholder options are dimmed when selecting header or footer.) Even if I try to sneak in the HTML, RH just blows it away or keeps it with no functionality.

Have they fixed this in RH9?

How to get "Selected" color for custom toolbar buttons?

I'm getting flack from internal QA folks about the custom toolbar buttons not having the same "selected" color as the default buttons (Contents, Index). I've copied the background color info from the <btnselected></btnselected> section for the built-in Contents to the <btnselected></btnselected> section for a custom toolbar button, but RH is ignoring it.

Any hints?

Experiences with Subversion & TortoiseSVN?

We're investigating switching from RoboSource Control to Subversion & TortoiseSVN. Although a free, easy-to-use product, it appears to be quite flexible and forgiving, especially when dealing with file renaming/deleting and reconciling changes between branches.

Has anyone using Subversion run into particularly nasty gotcha's, or bothersome quirks not covered in their help (which is quite good, actually). This would be used for a 42-project merged system, branched for at least three concurrent software versions.

Why can't you indicate the RoboHelp [sub-]forums that have new postings (bold, or a tooltip, with the number of post updates), so that I don't have to open every one to see if there have been any updates?
Why can't I always select forums from the FORUM CATEGORIES panel on the left of the RoboHelp Support page, instead of sometimes from the SUB-FORUMS panel on the far right?
Why do I have to click Login/Register for the RoboHelp forums (to activate cookies, my avatar, etc.) when I have already logged in to Adobe Forums?

RSC3.1 (with RH8) randomly adds binary info to topics

RSC3.1 is adding binary info to the top of random topics. We only discovered this when a few output files were discovered to be missing entire chunks of content (up to 150 lines of code).

Opening the source file in the RH project revealed a red block containing "xmlns," and displayed an error message about third-party editors; clicking Yes to assign Design View seemed to clear up the problem.
Opening the file outside the RH project, using the editor Notepad++, revealed three instances of NUL|NUL|NUL immediately before the "<?xml " header. Deleting these also cleared up the problem.

Not knowing when or if this will happen again, I guess we'll periodically use the Notepad++ "Find in Files" function to search for "NUL" in the entire directory. (Notepad and Wordpad do not reveal this type of info, so the free Notepad++ is your best bet.)

I've posted a Bug Report for this issue.

RH8 Hyperlink GUI not working on external links

Weird one, only on one of our machines!

Clicking OK in the Hyperlink window does nothing if an external project file is selected (fine for an internal file). Entering the link manually is fine (works in Preview and output). However, the problem remains if you double click that link and select another external file in the Hyperlink window.

We've restarted RH and restarted the machine. Next will be a complete shutdown/startup of the machine, then probably an uninstall/install of RH, I guess.

Any insight, folks?

Generate ePub format content for Mobile Devices...or not

Has anyone played with the ePub Generation tool that was announced a few months ago? I have, and it's like Adobe Air deja vu!

That is, the designers have designed it just the way they like, and have tested it just the way they like, and have announced it as a dazzling accomplishment. After all, it's XML and it's got this cool black background and everything! As to users actually being able to use it and customize it to their (and their customers') needs...fuhgeddaboudit!

Why should users have to edit the ePubGenerator.jsx file with no guidance whatsoever. (Do lines 30, 31, and 34 in the GenerateEPubFormat() function all need to be edited? If so, what specific strings need editing? Do any other functions need editing? If so, which ones?)
When you Run the ePubGenerator.jsx file, there is no GUI window that allows for any option selections.
If you Create and Generate an xml layout and open the output .xml file in the Adobe Digital Editions reader, the xml layout has only page 1 available. In other layouts, pages 2-4 are used for additional options (organize topics, remove topics, map styles, etc.).
Neither the .epub nor the .xml output reflect my .css and build tag selections (I made the .css percent and case changes, as instructed).
Where's my Index?
What special method is used to create a bookmark (selected a word and clicked the Create Bookmark icon...no result)?
Two attempts at sending comments to the designers (bottom of the Announcement page) have failed.

As word of this new output circulates, our increasingly astute customers (internal and external) might start requesting this type of output. Explaining that the Adobe app is "not ready for prime time" will not go over well.

Is it just me, or has anyone else had trouble getting full access to the forum (New, Your Stuff, Reply, etc.)?

I just figured out yesterday that I had to click this unobtrusive link called "Login/Register" after I had already "logged in." Only then did my avatar, full toolbar, and Reply privileges show up. What's up with that, anyway?

Does RH 8.0.2 contain those two new .dll files?

I just filed this enhancement request, pertaining to reconciling files between branches (parallel development).

How would you like the feature to work?
As a file is reconciled, it should either be removed from the window or at least dimmed.

Why is this feature important to you?
If you are interrupted during the course of reconciling multiple files, you can't often remember where you stopped.

RH8 spawning extra tags

[Submitted Bug Report to Adobe - RH 8.0.0.203]

This might be an issue for anyone using the Wrensoft Zoom Search product and using  and  tags to "hide" navigations, etc. from showing up in the search results. The odd thing is that it only seems to happen to the last instance in the topic. For example, most of our topics have three sets of these tag pairs:

Top navigation (the breadcrumbs and mini-toc)
H1 heading
Bottom navigation (Feedback and Return to Top)

but all these extras are placed after the third one only.

Although technically not an issue except for topics that are constantly being edited, this is becoming bothersome. The file mentioned below now has 1600 extra lines that RH8 has been steadily piling up!

***** BUG *****

Upon saving a modified topic, the  tag at the end of a topic gets reproduced, over and over, with extra line spaces added between each one. One file has 40 instances of it, each with 39 line spaces between them. It seems this is happening each time the topic is modified and saved.

Steps to reproduce bug:
1. Open a topic.
2. Modify the topic.
3. Save the topic.

Results: One more  tag is added, and one more space between is added to all.

Expected results: No  tags added

Corrupted (binary) Topic File Crashing RH8 on WebHelp (& HTML Help) Generation

(This is a solution to a problem that doesn't seem to have cropped up in the forum yet. If it does to anyone else, I hope this will help.)

Generating WebHelp (also HTML Help) started crashing RH8 almost immediately, although Printed Documentation was working fine. Opening the project was not an issue.

I attempted the following fixes:

Created a new WebHelp layout (fresh, not a copy) and assigned it as the Default Layout. no joy
Renamed the .cpd file and launched the .xpj file. no joy
Had another writer Get the project and try generating WebHelp. no joy

Before I went the "copy project/delete .cpd and .xpj files/recreate conditionals/recreate non-default layouts/copy rhvariable.apj" route from Peter's site, I thought I'd check RoboSource Control and look at a file that I had been having trouble Synchronizing to the file on my local machine. That is, the row was shaded, indicating a difference, but resisted synching because the files were supposedly identical. I figured I'd try to Revert back to an earlier version of that file.

Well, when I tried right clicking and selecting View, I got an error message saying that this was a binary file and couldn't be opened. I got the same error message for all earlier versions of that file (15 of them over the past 7 months).

So I created a new topic, reproduced the content, replaced all TOC and Index links, then deleted the bad file, and generated WebHelp. Huzzah, there was joy throughout the land!

So it's still unclear to me how this file got corrupted in this manner; I know that hitting 3-4 keystrokes at a time seems to make RH gag, so it might have been that.

Skinny on Skins update

To anyone using Rick Stone's Skinny on Skins file (webhelp.chm), "Using additional page images in the TOC," I discovered two things (which you could add to your file, Rick, if you ever feel the need to update it).

1. MERGED PROJECT - If the TOC entry is in a child project's TOC (of a merged project), you still must edit the root's whthost.js file, not the child's (unless, of course, you're also publishing the child project separately, somewhere else). (The image you're using must also be in the merged project's parent directory.)

2. TOOLTIP FORMATTING - The title (tooltip) can be customized by replacing the "+sName+" from title=\""+sName+"\" (the double quotes are not for emphasis, they're from the whthost.js file - remove them, too). In addition, you can use the JavaScript newline element (\n) to format the layout of the tooltip into multiple lines instead of the single-line default.

For example, this code:

title=\"Version 8 new features,\nenhancements, and known \nissues, in PDF format\"

would result in this tooltip format:

Version 8 new features,
enhancements, and known
issues, in PDF format

God, I love this stuff!

Why do my TOC subentry titles jump to the left margin?

As I select lower-level TOC entries (books and/or pages), the title jumps to the left margin (that is, the pane scrolls right). This renders all the surrounding entries illegible.

In the attached outdent_toc.gif, note the location of the "Add-on..." page entry, which is actually a 5th-level TOC entry, as shown in the margin_toc.gif picture, which is the result of scrolling back to the left.

This is a regression from RH X5.

RH 8 Breadcrumbs vs. Books without Links

An unintended consequence of adding breadcrumbs is that the breadcrumb links for books without links have nowhere to go, so therefore they sync to the first page under the book.

One user comment disabused us of the thinking that books without links was OK So we're now busy fixing them. Sigh...

Tip for RH Forum Searching

Just picked this up from the forum's "feedback" forum: Strip the Search for: field and click the button. This will bring you to the new window, where you can select More options (toggles to Fewer options as shown in this shot) and then narrow your search parameters.

Unfortunately, scrolling through the list is problematic, since it's tough keeping track of where you are because all sub-forum categories are listed for each product forum (and there are a ton of them!). Now, you can enter the actual search string in this Search for: field.

Hopefully, Adobe will polish this up soon.

RH8 Scripts for a Merged WebHelp Project?

I'm specifically interested in the Link Converter.jsx script, and whether it can be used to replace links across a 42-project merged WebHelp project. If so, how? (I understand that Adobe, rather than any users, should address this issue, but I didn't think the Wish/Bug Report method was the way to go.)

Would you:

Copy the .jsx file to the master project folder.
Change the old & new file names inside the script.
Run the script from the command line in the master project folder.

Most importantly, would the script automatically Check Out (RSC 3.1 , in our case) each topic that needs a new link, and then Check In the changed topic files? There doesn't appear to be any function for that in the script, at least to these untrained eyes, and we would not know beforehand which topics needed changing. I guess we could Check Out all 2,678 topics before running the script, but that's a major hassle (there's always at least one of the seven writers who forgot to Check In a project before going home).

I'm currently using FAR to accomplish these link changes, but that's a four-step process.

In FAR, Find (only) the topics needing to be changed.
In RSC, Check Out those topics.
In FAR, Replace the links in the selected topics.
In RSC, Check In the changed topics.

root.fpj dropping files & not synching files with RH GUI

(Moving this discussion from the RSC forum, since the issue seems no-RSC related.)

Projects are missing topics from one session to another, or from within a current session (single-writer-access or multiple-writer-access).

Files are being randomly dropped from the root.fpj file between one RH session and the next.
Files are not being added to the root.fpj file when re-imported through the GUI (File > Import), and must be manually added with a text editor.

Here's an example of a Robo SourceControl Diff between one project's current root.fpj and its previous version, the strikethrough indicating what was deleted (by RH, on its own). Note how it starts at the comments,/comments line of one topic, and resumes at the comments,/comments line of the final topic. (RoboHelp team, are you listening?)

We've had IT disable the Kaspersky anti-virus product for the RH project folders on our machines, and we'll monitor the situation. Now that we've identified a global problem, we'll all be externally storing a backup "good" copy of the root.fpj file.

RH 8 crashes on Save All when copying content between two open projects

[Win XP SP2] I've submitted a bug report for this issue. Note that RH does seem to save the content as it's dying (a very noble act, I must say), but the behavior is bothersome.

******BUG******

With two instances of RH8 running (dual monitors), and copying content from one project to another, the instance receiving the added content crashes when you click Save All.

Steps:
1. Open RH 1
2. Open RH 2
3. Copy content in RH 2 and paste it into RH 1
4. In RH 1, click Save All

Results: RH 1 crashes (RH 2 does not)

Expected Result: RH 1 does not crash

Find and Replace in Files bug in RSC

RH 8, RSC 3.1 [Have already posted bug report]

Replacing content in RSC-controlled files through the Find and Replace in Files window will corrupt the files, unless you separately Check Out the files first (which actually can be done without closing the Find and Replace in Files window).

Steps to reproduce bug:

Set up Find and Replace in Files.
Replace all.
Attempt to open one of the changed files.

Results: Corrupt files.

Expected results: Uncorrupted files. RH 8 should automatically Check Out the files before editing them, or at least provide users with an appropriate alert message.

Lost RSC connection to a file after branching

RSC 3.1, RH 8

We successfully branched a folder (two branches, one active, and one for archive snapshot only). A file in the active folder was apparently corrupted during the branching process, and does not appear in RSC. However, any attempt at editing the file results in this error message:

Spell checking entire project trashes random topics

One of our team has experienced this twice so far, in different projects. The latest incidence involved two topics, whereas the previous incidence involved a dozen topics.

Her description of the issue:

1. RoboHelp inserted a bogus bookmark to adobe.com at the top of the page (like: my_topic.htm#http://www.adobe.com).

2. I could not even open those 2 topics in RoboHelp until after I deleted the bogus bookmark in Notepad. (See message below.)

3. Although our style sheet is still attached to it according to the Properties window, the formatting is completely lost.

The error message she mentioned above:

The file 'C:\<project_path>\my_topic.htm' is associated with a 3rd party editor and may be open in the editor. If so, please close the file in the other application before continuing.

When she was confronted with this issue the previous time, there were way more bad links than were manageable, so she just re-imported an older version of the files.

Adds/Edits/Deletes not "seen" (inconsistent root.fpj updating)

Other scenarios have developed in which files have to be re-imported when a different writer gets a project, but this scenario (a project with 664 topics)seems to embody the underlying issues. (This problem does not affect projects with a single writer, nor does it affect several other projects in which two writers have added or edited a few topics.)

Writer 1 edits four files and adds two new files to Project A.
Writer 1 checks in all files, but keeps a few dozen others Checked Out.
Writer 2 opens Project A and Gets All files.
Project A (for Writer 2) contains only the files that Writer 1 has Checked Out.
Writer 2 re-imports all missing files, and Checks In All.
Writer 1 opens Project A, which does not contain the files imported by Writer 2.

It seems that the root.fpj file is being inconsistently updated, within the active project and in the transition from machine to RSC database to other machine. That is:

Topics are removed when they should not be.

Topics are not added when they should be.

Writers Get topics based only on their RSC status.

Sub-forums don't have update indicators

In addition, the highlighting for updated topics is erratic (sometimes bold, sometimes medium bold, what's up with that?).

To Do List item not appearing in Reports

Has anyone had success in implementing the To Do List? I followed the instructions posted on Adobe (written by Peter Grainge):

Create a New To Do item (or Edit an existing one)
Check it as completed for a topic
Add To Do List to the items that will appear in a report
Generate a report

The To Do item does not appear in the report.

There's also no indication in the help about whether you can create new items AND edit existing ones (or just one), and if there is a limit to the number of items allowed. Seems like I remember seeing/hearing about certain restrictions of that type when the feature was initially announced.

X5 scrollbar color customizations...

In RH 8, I've been able to replicate my X5 scrollbar color customizations for the TOC (whtdhtml.htm) and Index (whibody.htm) panes, but not for the Topic (was the .css file) pane. The adjustments to these output files, and a few others, were based on Rick Stone's "Skinny on Skins" reference help and some other forum hints.

So far, I've tried adding the <style> scrollbar colors to these files: .css, whskin_frmset01.htm, whskin_frmset010.htm, with no joy. Has anyone run into this, yet, with RH 8? Please share, if you have.

Otherwise, I'll just revert back to the default blue scrollbar color for all panes.

RH 8 Find/Replace in Files (both X5 & RH 8)

With both RH X5 & RH 8 installed on the same machine, the RH 8 usual Yes or No replacement works as it should. However, using the Edit button to customize a replacement string launches X5 as the editor, not RH 8.

1. In RH 8 Find and Replace in Files, click Edit.
2. Note that RH X502 opens the single file.
3. Enter a change and click the Close button.
4. The dialog returns:

"This file was modified outside of Multi-File Find and Replace.
Would you like to reload the file?"

5. Clicking either Yes or No does not close the dialog. However,
repeatedly pressing either button (10-15 times in
quick fashion) will close the dialog.

Otherwise, you have to force an End Task via Task Manager.

I've submitted a bug report for this issue.

RH 8 new table styles

The borders and backgrounds appear in the Design Editor, but not in Preview or in WebHelp output. Unfortunately, my custom tables from X5 don't translate into RH 8.

I've tried creating new styles using each of the following methods:

* Styles and Formatting > Create New Style > Table Style (per RH 8 Help)

* Insert a RH 8 Style, save it to include it in the .css file, and then rename it and edit the values in the .css file

* Copy an .HTMTABLE file, and then rename it and edit the values (per RH 8 Help)

* Edit a default RH 8 without renaming it. Borders and backgrounds are retained, but fonts are not when you paste mutiple cells.

Creating new styles in the Gallery in X5 worked perfectly well. This table style "feature" is a regression, not a feature.

jre1.6 not being recognized

jre1.6.0_01 and jre1.6.0_01 are both in the C:\Program Files\Java folder, AIR and RH Packager for AIR were then installed, in that order. However, when launched the Packager is not recognizing jre1.6.

The message is:

Please install jre 1.6 or higher to package the contents into .air file

Toolbar background image

To anyone insisting that they should be able to work with RH on a network, I offer this as a perfect example of the unexpected results of this folly:

My boss absolutely needed to make a last-minute change to one of my projects after I had left on Friday. Working on my backup project on the server, he added content (six characters) in two places in the same topic, then generated and published the output. No problem, the changes appeared in the output. However my TOC, which he insists he never touched, took an unexpected hit!

The top book of my TOC, which is all caps to match other categories in the merged project, simply disappeared. In other words, the outer UL item containing the top book no longer appeared in the HHC file, whereas all other books and pages survived the cut, so to speak.

Since I fully expected to encounter more issues, I blew away the backup and made the content changes to the project on my machine, and regenerated and republished. I then copied a new backup to the server. Whew! Needless to say, I issued a firm reminder to the entire Doc team that they should never, never, never do this!

SyncToy - free copy tool from MS

Folks:

Microsoft makes available the free copy tool called SyncToy. (Although I'm a big fan, I receive no gratuities for expounding on its merits!)

History====
This utility was created/tested/enhanced with input from photography experts for synching photos across multiple machines and storage devices.

Usage=====
My need was to synch the ~3K files (from six writers) from the server with copies to my machine. (I'm using the ZOOM search utility with my merged project, and am running it against the source files on my local machine. Copying all these files was problematic due to copy time and the inablity to synch deleted or renamed files.)

With SyncToy's Echo option, I can Preview the files and folders that need to be added/deleted/overwritten, deselect any that don't need to be echoed, and run the Echo function (for perhaps 100-300 files instead of all ~3K). Since I might have to do this several times a day, updating my entire merged project copy in seconds, rather than minutes, is huge!

Download it and give it a try; I think you'll agree that it's a great utility for use at work and at home. Simply set up any number of "Folder Pair" profiles, select folders to include/not include, and get started. (You can also choose to Synchronize or Contribute files, as described in their help.)

Nice job this time! The only issue I've seen so far is that the "Unread" folders and messages aren't consistently bolded:
* The categories are not bolded.
* The topics are not always synchronized (close one topic and the topic above it is also not bolded).

Now, if someone could only tell me how to use that list feature... Click LI first, then the bullet icon, click the bullet icon first, type the text first then click one or more icons? Yikes! I think I've tried every combination over the last year or so, with no luck (as obviously seen by my old-school use of asterisks in the pseudo-list above).

In other words, they've snatched victory from the jaws of defeat! But hey, I'm not complaining...at least we can go on as before, without the 5-10 minute waits for everything.

To the Adobe Support Team: Please leave the forums alone!

Instead, why don't you work on figuring out why RH, Acrobat, and RoboPDF can't work together? This forum (as well as the Acrobat and Framemaker forums) is littered with complaints about error messages for incorrect or missing licenses, versions, files, etc.

And, yes, I'm sending this directly to Adobe with the convenient Send Feedback link at the bottom (if it still works :-) ).

Goofy little boxes

Has anyone run into a situation like this? [RH X5.0.2]

Occasionally, a little box appears above every list item in a topic file (I hope it shows up in the attached code). This never seems to happen while editing the file, but apparently develops during the Generate/Publish process (might it even be the residue of a failed rltnnnn.htm Review temp file?)

Although this happens rarely, it's embarassing to have your reviewers giggle at the results of this glitch. Fixing it is relatively simple, but we'd certainly like to prevent it happening at all.

RoboHTML.exe - Application Error

This started several months back, but has been accompanied by a lot of problems on my machine (has been rebuilt, then a new motherboard, etc.).

If I Exit RH directly, I get this message. If I Close Project, wait a few, then Exit, I'm less likely to get the message.

Error message title:
DDE Server Window: RoboHTML.exe - Application Error

Error message content:
The instruction at "0x7c9118d0" referenced memory at "0x00000018". The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the program.

Any ideas?

Updating to Word 2003 on X5.0.2

After updating recently to Word 2003 (Office Suite), my Printed Doc is now hosed (error messages about disabled macros, images are gray boxes, all styles output as Sample Text at the start of the output file, etc.).

I have build 801 (X5.0.2), but do I need to uninstall/reinstall anyway? The RH Service Note 10492 dated May 28, 2003 only mentions uninstalling X5.0.1 then X5.

Character Styles in the Real World

Thanks for your efforts, and let me add my Amen to both subjects (on file locations and on Character styles).

My real-world use of Character styles is a combination usage of Paragraph and Character styles for Notes: I have a Paragraph style called Note, which simply adds margins of .15in Left, 10pt Top, and 8pt Bottom. Within this paragraph style, multiple labels announce the type of Note with the use of Character styles NoteLabel (Navy), RecommendLabel (Teal), CAUTIONLabel (Purple), and WARNINGLabel (Red).

This way, you can change the color of one or more labels without worrying about the paragraph settings (or vice versa).

Also, when placing a Note inside a table cell (which might have limited horizontal space, especially with three or four columns), we still use the "Label" character styles but without the Notes paragraph style. This still sets off the text visually, without adding unnecessary extra vertical space.

Little white boxes before every LI element

[RH 5.0.2 RoboHelp Html merged Webhelp project]

I've seen this before, but I thought the little white boxes were related to some link controls, and so I removed thecontrols and the boxes went away. This time, it's been caused by apparently too many links (internal to the topic itself) that I've used to present a series of alphabetical links within the topic.

There's nothing in the True Code but the little boxes, so there's no help there. Any clues?
