Adobe restructuring, Paul Guerette, et al

As a lot of you will have heard, Adobe has undergone a reorganisation (http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/201111/110811AdobeFinancialAnalyst Meeting.html). The LiveCycle/ADEP team in Ottawa was hit badly by this restructuring, which means that we may not be seeing some of the familiar faces here or on other forums.

In particular, I know that Paul has moved on and that he would like people to be aware that he will not be able to respond to threads. In addition he will not get Direct Messages/Private Message or emails to the LiveCycle8 address.

Paul was a tremendous help on the forums and we all own him a debt of gratitude.

Build a string with &to[]=

Hi,

I have a web app which sends SMS text messages. Works fine, except now I want to build a series of mobile telephone numbers and pass these to the function.

click="sendData(smsEnvir.text, '0861234567&to[]=0879876541')"

Error is that the "to" should be followed by a ; delimiter.

I have the solution working in LiveCycle, but want a Flex/web version.

Any ideas?

Changing Global Variables using Javascript

Hi,

I have a project where I need to have lots of signature fields on a single form. I don't want to use a signatureField because this will increase the file size every time a signatureField is signed. Also client does not want digital signatures.

I set up three user variables (for both usernames and passwords), using Form/Properties/Variables.

I then set up a dialogue box on the click event of a button, which requests the username and password. If these match the global variables, then the associated textField is populated with the user's credentials. I got this to work OK.

The problems stated when I gave the user the ability to change their password. This would be an important, as the form would not need to come back to me to hardwire in the new password.

One of the global variables is "Pass1".The following script changed the value of the variable, but would not hold the change when the form was reopened:

Pass1.value = AHSC02.strnewP;

".value" shouldn't work, but it did???

So I tried different versions of ".rawValue", but with no sucess:

Pass1.rawValue = AHSC02.strnewP;

form1.Pass1.rawValue = AHSC02.strnewP;

form1.variables.Pass1.rawValue = AHSC02.strnewP;

Using ".rawValue" wouldn't change the password variable at all, even in the same session.

I would be very grateful if anyone had an idea as to how to change the global variable using Javascript, which will hold when the file is saved and reopened.

".value" works within the session, but doesn't hold the value on reopenning.

I am attaching a sample form, with three signing buttons/fields.

Username1 = Niall O'Donovan Password = nod

Username2 = Marianne Barry Password = mb

I have initially set up the "Niall O'Donovan" account with .rawValue and the "Marianne Barry" account with .value scripting.

I am wondering if this is considered a security issue by Adobe and therefore we are restricted from changing global variables using Javascript???

I don't think it is necessarily a good idea for "community members" to be able to post discussions to FAQ pages on the forums:

In the LiveCycle Designer FAQ page, the top three posts are general questions, best placed on the main forum page.

Questions posted on the FAQ page may not be seen or get answered. In addition, the answers may not be correct or as complete as one would expect in an FAQ.

I think the FAQ page should be left to someone with higher "status".

Café feedback

Hi,

In using Café for posting to the forums, here is some feedback. I appreciate that some features may not be available in the Café version/AIR application.

When posting with apostrophe marks, they appear in the forum as ' and quotation marks appear as ". This could be confusing when providing a code snippet, where a quotation mark is important.

Is there a possibility of a spell checker in Café?

At present it is not possible to upload images into a post, but also you can't see images that other users have included in their posts. Is there a plan to deal with images?

I think it would be useful to have a visual indication that a thread has been answered. Possibly a subtle colour change to the thread in the index listing.

When considering increasing the width of the application, could the index also show who has posted last to each thread? I think it would be more useful than the date/time of the last post.

I appreciate that the current interface is clean and uncluttered, however when responding to a post (particularly if it is a long one) it is useful to be able to read over the question while providing a response.

Enterprise Café Forum Login

Hi,

I like the development of the Café, so that is now integrates LC, Acrobat and Flex.

While I can log into forums on the web; and onto the Partner Portal; and into the new Enterprise Café - I cannot then access the forums from within Enterprise Café.

I have one Adobe ID, which appears to work for 3 out of 4 logins. I would like to get the forums login working in Enterprise Café.

Formcalc Calculations - Division by ZERO

I am having difficulty with an if statement to prevent division by zero before the user puts in a value for the "Hours_Direct5" field

if ( Hours_Direct5=0 ) then Fatal_AFR_Direct5=0 else Fatal_AFR_Direct5 = Number_Fatalities_Direct5 * 100000 / Hours_Direct5 endif

For starters it did not like the statement "if ( Hours_Direct5=0 )" so I changed it to "if ( Hours_Direct5<1 )" and set a Default value for Hour_Direct5 as 0. While this works it is not particurarly good, as having a ZERO value for the Hours_Direct5 discourages a user putting in a real value.

Ideally I want the IF statement to return a blank statement " " if the Hours_Direct5 field is either null or zero (i.e. if the user has not put in a value for the hours)

Including Username Information in Form

Based on the huge success earlier, here is a problem I posted a while back...

I need to include User Information in the Designer Form each time the form is printed out. For example:

"Printed by Joe Bloggs on the 23/11/2005 at 10:32am"

"Printed by Jane Smith on the 24/11/2005 at 3:45pm"

The date I can do, however I cannot find a way to to get Designer to insert the user information of the person actually viewing the document or printing the document at any particular time. I need to do this, so that we can track who has printed out the document.

Dynamic Forms reverting to Static on Saving

I have set up several forms as Dynamic, however when I save them while working, Designer saves them as Static. I keep having to remember to do a "File / Save As" to force the Dynamic format. I have looked through the help file and I have set the default to Dynamic.

Is there a way of forcing Designer to maintain the Dynamic format on each save?

Scrolling in Read Only Text Fields

Good evening,

I am using a second dynamic PDF form to import XML data from a form completed by a user. The purpose of the second form is to score the User's responses. To maintain integrity I have set the text fields to "Read Only", so that the User's responses cannot be interfered with during the scoring process.

In the original form when the text field is active there are scroll bars. However when I set the text field to read only, the scroll bar is not available.

Is there a way of having scroll bars on a Read Only Text Field?

PrePrint Event to prevent printing of Background Fill

Hi,

I have a dynamic form, with a group of three radio buttons. Depending on the User's choice of this group of buttons, a different hidden Subform appears.

To make it easier for the User, each hidden subform has a different colour (Red / Amber / Green).

I want to save ink when the User is printing and I am trying to set up a PrePrint event to revert the background to white or blank and then a PostPrint event to revert to the original colour after printing.

Each hidden subform has a colour border on one side which I want to keep in the printed version.

Data Connections (Help.......)

Hi,

I have followed Chris' thread on Data Connections (23 Jan 2006) and the dbTest and I can get this to work (albeit that when I click the "Add" button the field clears and it does not add the item to the Access database. If I retype the new entry and click "Add" button, it then adds the item to the database. (?)

To my own woes, I have a Dynamic Form which is bound to an Access Database. The form contains different fields, which are bound to fields in the database table:

b Designer form binding to Access db

Drop-down-lists bound to db text data type
Radio-buttons bound to db number data type
Text-fields bound to db text data type
Check-box fields bound to db number data type
Numeric fields bound to db number data type

I have followed various threads on the subject and I have been unable to populate the database from information inputted into the Adobe Form. I have deleted the ID in each db table, I have gone through the steps in adding a new "Data Connection", I have checked and rechecked the script for the button using both Formcalc and Javascript:
$sourceSet.Hazard_Type.addNew();
xfa.sourceSet.Hazard_Type.addNew();

While I have a addNew button with an "if" statement, I have created a simpler button with the above script for a single Data Connection.

Nothing appears to work - every time I try it, the db remains empty. Has anyone any ideas / comments / suggestions as to how I get data that is inputted into Adobe Form across to Access database?

Any help will be gratefully received.

I am trying to get the following script to populate a form. I have gone through recent threads. Here I have put in the single quotation marks around RedProject, however it comes back with a syntex error.

Creating Variable for Data Connection Name

Sorry to be coming back so quickly with "cap in hand".

Having sorted out the Form to transfer data into Access, I am trying to set up a second Form which will be populated based on the Users choice of "Red List, "Amber List" or "Green List" (grouped Radio Buttons).

I have being trying to set up a variable script to set a name for the appropriate data connection based on which button the User has selected. To test this I have a temporary Text field displaying the variable (DBList.sHazardColour).

The variable script looks like this:

My approach is that if I can get the variable script to work, then I can apply this variable in the "$sourceSet.DataConnection." commands by replacing DataConnection" with "DBList.sHazardColour".

From the above, can you see where I am going wrong.

Designer 7.1

I have just loaded Designer version 7.1 and some of the files are now opening in Acrobat (and Preview) with the following error message:

"ado2xfa operation failed. Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal."

I am fairly sure that it was not doing this with version 7.0 and it does not appear to be happening with all forms.

The form appears to work ok after clearing the message, but I would prefer to deal with the problem. Any ideas anyone?

Reader Enabled Forms with Acrobat 8.0

Hi,

I am considering upgrading from 7Pro to 8Pro and need to confirm some aspects of the new features for applying reader rights to forms. I have a number of forms generated in Lifecycle Designer 7.1, where the user is using the Reader version to email the XML data.

If I reader enable these forms with Acrobat 8 Pro, will the User be able to still email the XML data and also save the completed form locally? In addition will it be possible to inport and export XML data into & out of Reader Enabled forms?

In addition do you know what the story is with "500 users of the forms"? Is is 500 per form over the lifetime of the form? Some of my forms are distributed to different Clients and I am not sure how this will work

Any help/guidance gratefully appreciated ;-)

ToolTips for "Calculated - Read Only" Numeric Fields

Hi,

I have a "calculated - read only" field, which calculates the users input into two other numeric fields.

I want to provide the user with information on the result; for example if the value is below a certain level, then they have to take a particular action; if the value is higher, then the user is advised to take a different action.

If I set the field as "calculated - User can override", then the tooltip is visible. However I do not want to give the User this ability and therefore would prefer "Read Only".

I have tried to force the tooltip to appear in read only mode without success.

Any ideas?

Acrobat 8 crashing when tabbing into List field

Hi,

I have a table, which contains a series of fields in one row (text fields / listbox / numeric fields and drop-down lists).

In addition the table is expandable (add rows).

The list field has four items (Contractor, User, Maintenance & Public). The field allows the user to make multiple selections.

My problem in use is that as the User tabs from an adjacent text field into a list field, Acrobat crashes and the User loses their information. It only appears to happen when the User tabs from one field into the list field (i.e. it does not appear to happen when tabbing to other fields)

Any ideas?

Dynamic Tables & Tabbing

I have a form, which includes a table with one row that the User can add additional rows. The row contains text fields; list field; numeric fields; and drop-down lists. The list fields contains four items (Contractor; User; Maintenance; Public). Two problems:
(1) When the user tabs from the text field into the list field; Acrobat crashes! If the User clicks into the list field Acrobat is LESS likely to crash!
(2) When I use the form (Iknow to click into the list field rather than tabbing), everything works ok adding rows over several pages, until suddenly the number of header rows on page 1 have increased randonly to three or more. These cannot be removed.

Header Row Repeating Erratically

Hi,

I have a problem with a dynamic table using Adobe Lifecycle Designer 8.0 and Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0.

The table starts with a header row and a single row. The user can add additional rows and the table flows onto multiple pages. Everything appears OK, but when EITHER the user goes back to page 1 or if the user closes and reopens the file, there can be multiple header rows repeated on page 1. Sometimes there might only be 2 header rows, but other times there can be upwards of seven header rows one on top of the other.

This is wrecking the layout and my head. Has anyone had similar problems or could give me a direction as to where I am going wrong.

Enabled PDF not Consistent with All Adobe Readers

Hi,

I have generated a form in LC v 8.0 and opened this in Acrobat Pro v 8.1 to apply "Enable usage rights in Adobe Reader".

When I test this out on a PC running Reader v 8.1.2 everything works as it should (User can fill in the form and save the data).

However when I open the same form on a different PC running Reader 8.1.2 as well, I get the following message "This document contained certain rights to enable special features in Adobe Reader. The document has changed since it was created and these rights are no longer valid. Please contact the author for the original version of this document." The form fields are inactive and the form cannot be filled in, let alone the data saved.

All of the forms that cannot be opened using AR8.1.2 on one PC can be opened using AR8.1.2 on a different PC.

Has anyone come across this problem?

Hi,

Is it possible to script a button, which allows the user to attach a file (PDF or Word) to the dynamic form (Acrobat Ver 7 Dynamic)?

I want a form which is enabled, but will still allow the user to attach the file.

Once attached subsequent users must be able to click and view the attachment.

Is this possible?

LCCS rtc Code Completion

I have downloaded version 1.2.5 of the LCCS SDK. I am using Flash Builder 4 (4.1 SDK) and attempting to create a spark LCCS application.

I have copied script into the project and can get the tutorial web app to run okay. However I am not getting code generation when I type rtc specific components.

I have added the Flash Player 10 swc and source in the project library.

I am using the new xmlns:rtc="http://ns.adobe.com/rtc".

I am missing something obvious, but can't see it.

Anyone got any ideas why code completion is not working?

I have a component that is intended appear in one state and display various PDFs. I have it working when it is called the first time, however when it is called subsequently it does not load the PDF.

I have been using the Tour de Flex approach of using a mx:HTML to show the PDF, but changed to adding elements to a spark container:

Okay, this is very minor (VERY!)...

Just noticed that the list of threads in My Stuff is not in strict date order:

The threads highlighted in green appear in the person's profile summary on hover, which may not reflect current issues. In any case I prefer the previous way of displaying threads that a person started.

Hi,

This is a great resource and I like how forms can be completed on mobile devices, including iPhone.

A few points:

The colour picker is quite dark and is not particularly easy to select appropriate colours. I think the circle instead of square swatches isn't helping. Especially in the central swatch area.

Also it would be nice to be able to input a RGB or HEX colour, to allow closer matching of brand/company colours.

In relation to the caption positioning relative to the field, at design time there is a gap:

However when rendered, the caption is right on top of the field and this looks too cramped:

Importing XML in a loop

Hi,

We have a certified form where the user (with Acrobat) clicks a button that imports a relevant XML file based on the data that the user has provided. Basically they input a number and the script builds a filename string for the XML file and then imports that file. This works fine.

The issues is that we want to have a mechanism where the user can input a range of numbers in a single operation. We have a separate script which:

Creates a clean array from the numbers.
Using a loop, builds the first XML file name, import this XML file, print the form, AND then loops through to the next number in the array and repeats the process.

The trouble is that the first import invalidates the digital signature/certified form and the second loop fails silently.

Two potential approaches:

Script a solution to validate the digital signature after each import XML in the loop. I suspect that this would be a security violation and would not be permitted. Any views?
Process the XML outside of the form and then import as a single XML, where the page is now set to repeat. The trouble with this apprach is that there is a lot of data on the Master Page and this will not work when combining multiple XML files into a single XML file for import. I can't get around not having these objects on the Master Page, as it is a dynamic form with potentially unlimited number of pages. Any ideas?

The client is using Acrobat and is unlikely to upgrade to the Enterprise Suite or ADEP. The current option is to manually input each number on the form, import, print, validate signature AND then start with a new number. This is very slow and Option 1 above would be the ideal solution.

I am working on a new document and considering some options for the fonts. The document is a guideline to legislation, so I want the look and feel to contrast the actual legislative text.

The guidelines are there to support reader, help to guide them through the legal requirements in a clear and concise manner.

I want to make sure that the document is approachable and easy to read. It is unlikely that a reader will read from cover to cover. They are more likely to dip in and read certain sections.

In previous guidelines we have used Myriad Pro or Verdana for body text and Hypatia Sans for heads. However on this occasion I am considering a serif font for the body, like Warnock or Garamond. While these fonts help make the document more readable, I am concerned that this may make the guideline appear more serious and less approachable.

So, sans serif OR serif for this type of document.

I would be grateful for suggestions.

Mac OS 10.6.7 corrupt font on export from Word to PDF

Hi,

I have a library of Word documents that use our corporate font: Officina Sans ITC Pro Book. I have previously saved these as PDF using Word for Mac and opening in Acrobat Pro 9 without any difficulty.

Today however, while Word will export and create the PDF. When the PDF is opened in Acrobat it comes up blank and crashes Acrobat. I have tried exporting from Word to PostScript, but this fails: "Stack:/Font-dict-/ZCYKUX+OfficinaSansITCPro-Book".

The font is avialable on the Mac. I have validated the font and using Font Finagler I have cleared the cache. All without success.

One pointer is the additional six digits in the PS log, which is in front of the font name.

Anyone got any ideas on how to clear the problem and start export cleanly from Word to PDF again?

Opening XFA Forms in Flex

Hi,

Is it possible to have certain data which is inputted in a Flex app by the user, available in a form that is then opened from within the Flex app?

Scenario:

Flex app with data fields and links to several embedded XFA forms.
User inputs key data, like name, company, department, etc.
As user then clicks on a link/button that opens a form in a new window, I want the user inputted data to populate fields in the form

Can this be achieved?

Using app.media I can get data from one XFA form to another. Is there a way to "broadcast" data from within Flex that is avaialble to other programs?

My preference is for the form to open in a new window. To get the data into the form, would I need to open the form in an iFrame instead?

Have you checked out Adobe's new cloud service - FormsCentral?

It is an easy to use, drag and drop for fill and submit forms. It seems to make it very, very easy to amend the built-in templates, deploy the form to your audience and then analysis the responses.

As far as I can see, it currently does not allows scripting. Since it is not pitched as an advanced development tool requiring programming skills, I doubt if it will ever have scripting ability. So things like calculations, dynamic changes are out. However for a "fill and submit" type form it certainly fills a gap.

I noticed this morning that searching the LiveCycle Designer forum seems to be limited to today. My grasp of Latin is limited so I am not going to attempt the plural of 'forum' . Suffice to say, it seems to be across the board.

Is this a temporary 'feature' or a permanent clear out?

Changing from A5 landscape to A4 portrait

Hi,

I am using InDesign CS5.

I have an InDesign project which consists of a book with 14 documents.

Each document is set up with two handed A5 landscape master pages. The pages included threaded text frames and graphics.

I now need to change the layout of the book to A4 portrait. In essence two A5 pages now become an A4.

Again I will probably need two A4 portrait master pages, to take account of binding.

Is there a workaround to achieving this? Or do I just manually go through each document and change the master pages and content?

Just looking for a direction, before I start.

Expanding TextArea

Hi,

I have an AIR app with panels that expand, if the user increases the size of the window:

However I also need the TextArea to increase in width as well, so that the text fills the now wider panel.

I am using Flash Builder 4. The text string changes depending on user interaction and is fed from XML.

What would be the best approach to achieve this?

I've noticed that the application autoUpdate has an Alert in the error handler. However the code generation does not appear to include a:

import mx.controls.Alert;

I can type it in manually, no big problem. Maybe in the dot update...

Displaying XFA Forms and AcroForms in Flash Builder 4

Hi,

I want to display LiveCycle Designer forms (XFA forms) and Acrobat forms (AcroForms) in a Flex web based application.

I have been trying out FlexPaper for static PDFs and this works great, displaying the PDF as a swf.

While this works for static PDF it does not appear to work for forms.

The main problem, as expected, is converting to .swf. The AcroForm converts, but is static and user cannot interact with form fields. The XFA form does not covert to .swf in any meaningful way.

Is there a way to display a functioning form (AcroForm or XFA) in Flash/Flex as a web based application? Alternatively, is it possible to have these forms working directly in an AIR app.

I appreciate that I can set the documents to open in a new browser window, but I really would prefer to have them open within the app itself.

XML to respect Carriage Way Returns

Hi,

I started a project where I bound a text area to a string, which included \n for carriage returns. This worked OK.

However I am now using a http service call to access a XML file and populate the text areas. Some text areas are lengthy and I still want to have carriage returns / new lines.

Because the data is now coming in via XML, the '\n' is not respected.

I am unsure if I should use the new text layout framework to format the data coming in for paragraphs OR use the htmlText property of the old mx: component OR some other approach. In total there are six separate text areas that will need to display the data as paragraphs, so I am looking for the most efficient / cleanest way of achieving this.

I am using Flash Builder 4.

Javascript Blacklist Framework

Warning: Yellow Bar of Death

Hi,

Just in with a client and working through some solutions. Showed them a dynamic form, that has previously worked; however this time when I clicked the button, I got a BIG YELLOW BAR informing that javascript was turned off due to a potential security risk AND a dialogue window nicely informing me that my script had failed!!!!

Even when I clicked "trust form", the script still fails to function (although without the warning). I am too depressed to go through and check other forms. Although a quick check seems to indicate that javascript within a form will continue to work OK. This is just a warning to check your forms, that they will still function, especially those that make API calls.

I have seen this increasingly restrictive environment before, where modal dialogue was introduced for developers to expolit and then next thing it has a dire Javascript warning plastered over it. I find that this does very little to inform the user:

What is the user meant to do? "Warning: Javascript Window". Most users are unsure! Again I can deal with this by way of instruction.

The yellow bar appears in Acrobat v 9.3.1, but probably in other versions as well.

Stefan Cameron's blog includes the following in relation to the "Javascript Blacklist Framework":

"The Adobe Reader Blog has a recent post describing what’s new with these security updates. Amongst other things, there is now a JavaScript Blacklist Framework which “provides customers granular control over the execution of specific JavaScript API calls.”

There is also an 8.2 update to Acrobat/Reader which includes some of these features as well."

Now, I appreciate that Adobe has to take steps to plug security gaps. However it is extremely frustrating when the tools available to develop dynamic solutions become so restrictive as to make the solution not viable.

The yellow bar is one problem. I can provide guidance/instruction to the user on how to deal with that. However the complicated/horror inducing/technical gibberish/dire warning that the script has failed will freak out most users. As well as discredit the developer.

I have yet to work out why the script did not work after I clicked "trust this form", but no doubt I am in the "hacker" category and will have to work up a different solution.

Following on from one of John Brinkman's blogs I have been looking at the return on investment of developing solutions in LC Designer. While I appreciate that Adobe's concerns are for the security of users, this latest step makes it harder to achieve a satisfactory ROI.

I had seen posts re the blacklist, but didn't think it would affect us - I was WRONG!!

Developing Forms in Flex

Hi,

I have been developing forms in LiveCycle Designer and have started to look at doing some of these in Flex. The aim is to have some hosted on a web site or grouped in an AIR application.

I am working through online resources and tutorials (Tour de Flex, First steps in Flex, Adobe DevNet), which are helping a lot but we are still struggling.

I would be grateful if someone could point me in the direction of a good resource specifically for forms. I am trying to capture some best practice at the start rather than discovering it at the end.

Also I am having trouble printing and getting to grips with the differences from dealing with page sizes (LC Designer) to pixel dimensions (Flex). Again if anyone could point me in the direction of printing solutions for forms, it would be great.

Printing in Snow Leopard

Hi,

I have worked through the articles for printing to PDF in Snow Leopard. For the most part using the new menu item / dropdown for "save to PDF" works OK. However part of my workflow includes printing XFA forms (LC Designer) to PDF for record purposes and inserting into other PDF files.

In Windows version of Acrobat there is no problem printing these forms to PDF (flat). However because in OSX.6 it is not possible to print to PDF, I can no longer print to PDF and I cannot flatten the forms to allow insertion into a PDF document.

Acrobat (in OSX.6) does not allow saving the XFA form to PDF.

Does anyone have a workaround to flattening a XFA form so that it can be inserted into PDF document?

I can post this to the LC Designer forum as well, but I thought I would try here first.
