Nested tables

Hi all,

there is some Information in the Framemaker help how to nest tables in structured documents but I simply don't understand how to implemend this. This is a DITA document and I know that nesting tables is very bad style. However it is a requirement and after all DITA does support it.

In unstructured documents we used anchored Frames in table cells. The approach for structured documents seems similar:

"Select a graphic element for empty anchored frames in the Element Catalog, and click New Frame"

I wonder how I can accomplish this. In the EDD I would have to set up an element (perhaps a dedicated paragraph class) to insert an anchored Frame in which then the table is inserted.

Has anybody succeeded in using nested tables in structured documents with Framemaker?

Does displaying the master TOC in a merged CHM still work under Win7?

Hi all, we used to display the TOC of the master project when any of the merged sub-CHMs are opened. For this, in the merged projects it was necessary to point the advanced properties of the window to the hhc of the master, e.g.:

master.chm::/master.hhc

(see also this topic: Context-Sensitive Help and Merged Projects)

It seems that this does not work any more, no TOC is displayed at all now using this method. Has anybody used this method under Win7 64bit?

Unreliable display of named image frames via EDD

Hi all,

I have formatted my <prolog> element to display named images frames from the reference page above and below. The intention is to distinguish this area for the editor.

However, the lower frame is displayed very unreliable. For example, if I insert a <keywords> element with a single <kexword> child element then it is not displayed. As soon as I add another <keyword> child the line appears. But if I delete this second <keyword>, the line stays visible the way it should have been from begin with. After saving and reloading it usually is not visible either, moving the elements in the prolog around a bit makes the lower line visible again.

I could not get this to work reliable, does anybody have a recommendation?

Can open Topics by drag & drop, but not by double-clicking in the DITA map

Hi,

evidently I made an error somewhere in my structure app, the result is that I cannot open DITA topics by double clicking them in the DITA map anymore (Framemaker does simpy nothing). I can, however, open them by dragging the xml files onto the Framemaker window. If I use the standard DITA 1.2 application everything works fine so I guess the problem is in my mapping.

Here is what I tried to achieve:

We need certain variations of the normal 'topic' type topic. The DTD should be identical, however different structures should be auto-inserted when creating a topic and the topic should have certain attribute values predefined.
The idea is that the author can select one of these topic types when creating a topic, but when opening an existing topic simply edit it with the standard topic temple.

Here is what I did:

I duplicated the topic.template.fm, renaming it say "topic_a.template.fm", "topic_b.template.fm" etc. (just an example).
I made adjustments to the EDD of these templates, changing the auto-insertions and the default values of some attributes.
In the structapps.fm file I added XML applications for these new topic types, mapping each application to one of the new templates, but to the original topic DTD and r/w rules. E.g. the application "DITA_1.2_topic_a" is mapped to the "topic_a.template.fm" template, and to the original "topic.dtd" and "topic.rules.txt" files.
In Framemaker I then created corresponding application mappings in the DITA options. E.g. the topic type "A" (which defines the visible text in the "New topic" menu) is maped to the XML application "DITA_1.2_topic_a".

The result:

It works as intended in every way when creating topics. The topics are saved with the standard doctype 'topic'. However for when I try to open topics from the DTD by double-clicking then nothing happens. Opening topics by drag & drop works fine though and they are opened with the normal (general) "topic.template.fm" template as desired.

Any ideas? Was this confusing or am I completely off somewhere?

Autoinsert with predefined attributes?

Hi, is there a possibility to use an autoinsertion in the EDD that specifies an attribute of the inserted element? I envision something like the following so insert a 'data' element that has the attribute 'name' set to 'source'..

Automatically insert child:data[name="source"]

My Structure Application Developer Guide is outdated (FM8) but I could not find a newer version yet..

Suppress FM comments in Doctype declaration

Framemaker includes empty lines and comments such as "?Fm Validation Off?" into the doctype declaration.

Is it possible to suppress this? A clean single-line declaration would be preferrable for us.

Customized quick element toolbar not appearing in new topics

I found that I for customizing the quick element toolbar I need to edit the file quick_element.xml in the folder C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\12\WorkSpaces\Structured\WYSIWYGView\toolbars. The location given in the online help (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS2d2a17056e219198-10de064142a20156dc-7fff.ht ml) does not work.

It turns out now that my custom icons only appear when I edit an existing XML file. When I create a new one using the DITA menu, they are not displayed. As soon as I save the new file and open it, the icons appear again.. is this a bug?

Where are mapping groups stored?

when I create a new mapping group in the DITA options menu, in which file is it stored?

I need to tranfer a mapping group to other computers. Also I found that I cannot edit or delete individual entries in the mappung group (the button "edit" is always greyed out) and hope to be able to do so directly in the corresponding file.

RH inserts filenames as title elements (instead of the actual chapter titles)

Hi all,

I am not sure whether this is a bug or can be fixed. When I import from FM using chapter title paragraph styles for breaking the content into topics, then RH inserts the resulting file names into the topic as <title> elements and not the title names themselves.

This is no problem as long as you can use the default naming convention (i.e. heading and filename identical). For some output formats hovever it is necessary to use a different naming convention to avoid non-english characters in file names. In such a case I use <n> as naming, resulting in files that have ascending numbers as file names.

Now I receive e.g. a topic with the h1 heading "This is my topic", the filename "123.htm" and the HTML title "123". That is very bad because in the search results e.g. in Javahelp the HTML titles are displayed, resulting in unusable search results.

Do you have any suggestions how to avoid this dilemma?

Bug in the search database of Javahelp

Hi all,

in this project I am importing from Framemaker and generating Javahelp output. The Javahelp does not work when there are non-ASCII characters in the topic filenames (such as accents or umlauts). Therefore I have to adjust the file naming in the imort settings to "<$filename_no_ext>-<n>". As a result I get topics with numbered filenames and all seems well.

BUT with this setting the Javahelp displays the totally cryptic filenames of the topics as search results. Why does Robohelp not create a search database with the topic titles as search results?

How do you handle Javahelp projects for non-english languages?

How to adjust R/W rules to display images inline?

Hi all,

out of the box, when I insert an image in a paragraph (DITA 1.2) then FrameMaker 12 uses the "below line" display setting. I need to display it inline, at the insertion point.

When I adjust the settings of the anchored frame then the inline setting is lost when saving the XML file. So evidently I need to adjust the R/W rules.

I tried to add a corresponding inline rule but had no success so far, does anybody know what needs to be done? It seems like a quite common requirement to display images inline.

Format a text-crossref

Hi all,

in the DITA EDD the fm-xref element does not suport any formatting in itself it seems. Thus we use the crossref-definitions in the Framemaker template to apply a chracter style (simple underlined blue). However, if you insert a crossref that contains a text string as anchor (e.g. "For more information, click here.") then it is not possible to apply a formatting.

How can such a crossref be formatted? Does the EDD offer any possibilities?

Display a line (via image frame) below suffix

Hi all,

currently I am trying to format the DITA <lq> element (long quote) to display a line above and below its content. For the line below I have tried to use a suffix rule in the EDD. I can assign any text and character formatting below the long quote without problems, but Framemaker ignores any imaged frames that I define there.

The EDD does not allow the definition of a frame directly in the suffix rule, so I am using a format change list.

This is the suffix rule in the <lq> element. It refers to the format chanhe list "line_below" (the EDD language is German):

This is the corresponding format change list that defines a frame below.

If I define any other formatting in the format change list such as red text color there are no problems at all, only the image frames are ignored.

Does anybody have an idea how to solve this?

Javahelp - the bad HTML output of Robohelp creates huge problems with lists and indentions

Hi all,

I have benn previously using the Open Toolkit to generate Javahelp from DITA content. This worked fine but process changes force me to try out Robohelp.

The main problem is that Robohelp creates awfully structured HTML output and relies on CSS to streighten the formatting. Particularly with lists this does not work in Javahelp. For example, if you have a list in 2nd order (within another lists) then Robohelp creates two flat lists and simply increases the margins of what is intended to be the list bullets in 2nd order.

It seems that any margin-left attributes do not work in Javahelp. Does anybody have experiences with getting the Robohelp output to work in the Javahelp viewer?

Open topics by double-clicking them in the DITA map - not working any more?

"Topic templates" for providing a base structure

Hi all,

is there a way to provide "content templates" for the autor, containing a certain base structure with which to continue his work? The goal is to provide a set of topic templates with different base structures, i.e. elements already inserted when creating a new topic. Technically these will all be DITA concepts. I want to avoid specialization (with different topic types defined in the structapps) just for this reason because the DTDs will all be identical. It is just meant as an assistance in every-day work.

Do you know a script that could be used, or do you have any other suggestion?

RH10 and RH11 incompatible on same machine (causes crash)

The same also applies for Framemaker 11 and 12 - after installing the new versions, the old versions crash when opened. Older versions are not affected, Framemaker 7.2 still works fine.

Does anybody encounter the same.. bug? Feature? Anyway I prefer to keep older versions until I am sure that my tool chain still works.

FrameMaker 12 issue: copying inline element also copies paragraph style

When I copy an inline element then sometimes the paragraph style is copied as well. The happens frequently when I copy a cross-reference. If the source context is a list then the target paragraph is formatted as list after I insert.

This is quite awkward in a structured document in which the style should of course be ther result of the EDD, not manual formatting.

Has anybody encountered this problem or do you know a solution?

FrameMaker 12 issue: cross-refs store absolute path, even though the relative path is shown in href

Hi all,

I often work on my documents locally and then move them to the backup drive, then the other day move them to another workstation etc. Moving complete Books was never a problem.

Working with FM12 I now noticed this error: When I open a document on another location than that where I created a cross-reference (to another document in the same book), then FrameMaker says it cannot find the file. In the error message, the former location is shown as absolute path.

For example,when I was working on my desktop it displays the path C:\users\... etc. in the error message. However, when I open the attribure inspector the path stored in the href of the cross-ref is a perfect relative path that correctly points to the target in the same folder.

Has anybody encountered this issue with FM12? How would FM even know the absolute path of a former location when only the relative path is stored in the href atribute?

P.S. If I right-click a cross-ref and select to update all cross-refs in the document, then FM simply removes all the link texts (great update feature..).

Acrobat Workspaces will be closed down - implications for shared review

Linking to local files - strange behavior

Hi all,

when I insert a link to a local file (using Insert > Hyperlink and then selecting "File" in the dropdown list), then Robohelp changes the absolute path to a relative path when saving the topic. Naturally this link does not work in a CHM.

I can resolve the issue in the HTML view by changing the path back to an absolute reference such as:

file://C:/Test/Hello_World.htm

Such a link works in the CHM. However, I cannot get it to work in the TOC. I have checked the HHC and can verify that the path still is absolute there, yet the page does not open when clicked.

Any ideas?

Hi all, there is no offtopic-section so I'l just post this here. Today we searched through our really old office equipment. Among the oldest software I found were Framemaker 4 and Robohelp 3, including the untouched documentation (thick as phonebooks).

I wonder, does anybody still have the first version? Does "Robohelp 1" even exist or what was the name back then?

Kontext rule for formatting only the first child section in a chapter

Hi all, I have run into a DITA problem. Each chapter of the document, i.e. top-level topic, contains a miniature toc of the nested sections. Therefore the first child topic's title should receive a page break.

I tried this context rule for the title element, below you find the screenshot which I have tried to translate because the EDD is in German. Even though I define that the context should be the first parent topic only, the result is that every second-level topic now has a page break. Any ideas?

Review PDF - enable commenting is greyed out

Using RH10 and having Acrobat XI installed, the option for saving a PDF for review works but the options to enable commenting and to send for shared review are greyed out.

Acrobat and RoboHelp have been installed separately not as part of the TCS, is this a problem? It is possible to save the PDF and then separately enable the commenting in Acrobat, so the basic functionality does work.

Problem when importing "empty" chapters (with titles only)

Hi all,

in this import project all title formats result in topic splits. However, each time there is a chapter in Framemaker that has no text content, Robohelp fails to create separate topics and packs both title lines into one topic. They are both linked from the TOC via bookmarks. The result in the online help are two TOC entries with apparently identical content (alltough it actually is just the same topic being referenced twice).

I know that empty chapters like this are bad style, but it would be no problem to simply receive corresponding emtpy topics as they will be never displayed by a context-sensitive call.

Is there a possibility to force Robohelp to apply the topic splitting rules as defined in the import settings, even if a resulting topic will be empty?

Remove fm-ditafile and dita elements from FM output

Is there a way to remove these elements after converting a Dita map to FM files? They clutter up the output, I would prefer a clean structure with tasks, concepts etc. as root elements for chapters.

Perhaps somebody knows a script that searches for these files and unwraps them?

RH10 error with Java 2 JDK - how to set up for Java help

Hi all,

for generating an uncompressed Java help with search function I need to configure the JDK path in the settings of the SSL. I have jdk1.7.0_45 installed but when I select the correct folder then simply nothing happens and the SSL settings are displayed again. To verify, if I select a different folder then RH displays an error message because the required files were not found. So evidently RH does find and recognize the JDK, but fails to generate the output.

This in Win7 64bit, has anybody succeeded in setting up RH in this environment for java help?

Where is the table width stored?

I am stranded, can you give me a short hint?

The DITA 1.1 code of a table that contains a note looks like this:

However when I change the second colwidth to make the table width shorter, then when I open the topic the next time FM increases the width of the first column correspondingly. The overall width of the table thus always stays the same.

It seems I must correct the overall width of the table to match my page layout, where can I find this? It's not in the EDD and not in the table style of the template (or is it?).

Suppress XML validation when opening files

Hi,

is there a way to (temporarely) suppress the validation? I have a large amount of DITA files created with an old FM version. For some reason, the doctype "dita" has been written into the headers. All I need to do is open each file, confirm the validation error message, and save the file again. FM then automatically writes the correct doctype. However clicking through all these error messages would be very time consuming.

This is FM11 with FMx 1.1.

Content categories cause error

I just noticed the other day that using content categories causes an error in the output (see below). I verified this with a new test project with the same result. It is independent of the browser used.

All is fine if I manually open the start page in one of the subfolders in the Webhelp output. E.g., if the category is named "admin" then open the file "Admin.htm" in the subfolder "admin".

It looks like a script error to me, as if a variable was not resolved to set the correct file name for the start file. Any ideas? This in Win7 64bit.

Duplicated title in search results

In the search result context, Robohelp duplicates the topic title. This looks particularly bad when the url is removed from the search results page (I always remove it because I do not want filenames paths to be displayed).

I tend to think this is a bug and wonder if anyone has perhaps found a solution..

Looking for a plugin that can rescale PDFs

Hi all,

the printer asked me to rescale finished PDFs from DinA4 to DINA5 (which is the final print format). This seems like a simple task but from my reading in the forum Acrobat evidently cannot do it. Saving as a new PDF will change all the settings, loose transparency etc.

I am aware of the PitStop plugin that can do a simple rescale but this is way too expensive at around €600.-. Is there a freeware or cheap licenced plugin that can so a rescaling?

Change black color from mix to 0c 0m 0y 100k

Hi all,

a requirement of my printer is that black color should be pure 0c 0m 0y 100k, not any other 4 color mix. Using Acrobat XI Pro, is there a way to change this in an existing PDF? I found the color conversion dialog in the printing tools but I could not find out how to perform this task.

I would be very thankful for a short hint!

Edit: There is an option "enable CMYK grey scale to black". The text on the German UI is not clear to me - is that the option I need to use?

How to specify the table style in context rules for paragraphs in tables

Hi all,

I set up table formats for different types of notes and the roundtrip XML<->FM works so far. However, I have not been able to format the paragraphs within the tables using context rules.

When I insert a table of a certain type (e.g. table_warning), then FM writes this type into the outputclass of the table's tgroup element when saving as XML. So I thought for the paragraph elements in the table I could use a rule that specifies a context like this:

* < tgroup[outputclass = "table_warning"]

Yet FM does not recognize the outputclass type.How can I address the table type in context rules?

Edit: I have been able to succeed when I wrap the entire table into an additional note element and manually define the outputclass for the note. Then I can use a context like * < note[outputclass = "table_warning"]. But I would prefer to omit the extra note element and refer to the table type directly.

Embedded mp4: The PDF only plays audio, no picture

When I save a FM11 file as PDF, then the embedded mp4 file is displayed as a black box. I can however hear the audio (music and narration). When I play the mp4 file for itself using any of my viewers there is nothing wrong with it. The file is 18mb large.

Of course the 'Embed Multimedia Objects In PDF' option is active in the rpeferences.

Are there any restrictions for embedded mp4 files, or do I have to use special settings?

Convert non-english EDD to english

In older FM versions, if you installed the program in another language then the EDD was also structured with localized element names. That makes it impossibe to copy elements into a different EDD.

Is there a way to convert the EDD without creating each individual context rule from scratch? I suppose importing the old EDD structure (the EDD of the EDD so to speak) would be a bad solution because of the mismatching EDD versions.

FM inserts wrong/strange doctype declaration

When I create and save a new DITA Task in FM11 (using DITA 1.1), FM writes 'Concept' as doctype even though referencing the correct task dtd. FM also auto-inserts a concept element as root element. The XML looks like this:

The structapps file looks fine to me and also contains the correct doctype statement. Do you have any idea where else I could look to find the error?

Which template file is used for DITA 1.2 publishing?

when I save a ditamap as composite document, which template file must I edit to change the layout?

So far I have modified the topic templates (task.template.fm etc.) but I have not found the template relevant for the output yet.

The ditafm_output.ini file contains the line CompositeDocTemplate_1.2=ditabase.template.fm but exchanging all ditabase.template.fm files in the FM directory did not do the job.

This seems like is a very basic question so I wonder why it is not documented - or am I missing something? The only workaround I found was to manually import the EDD and formatting from my template into the FM document each time after publishing.

Automatically closing all other TOC books - a solution (is there a better one?)

Hi all,

I wanted the WebHelp to automatically close the open books when I open a topic in a book. Thus only displaying the contents of one book at a time.

After some fiddeling I found this solution. It is sort of slugish do to the reload though, maybe someone knows a better way?

First, add Willams scipt to always show the navigation pane:

Then open the whtdata0_xml.js file and change all items adding the attribute target=\"_top\" . You can do this using a search & replace.

This forces the page to reload each time, which closes all other books except for the current one.

Using HHP Builder under Win7

Hi all,

today I attempted to use the old "HHP Builder" tool on a Win7 (64bit) system. The program told me that it could not find csh.dll. Compatibility mode did not help.

So I searched for this file and found it on my old computer (TCS2). I copied it onto the Win7 system and tried to register it (using regsvr32) but received the error message that the module was lodad, but no entry point could be found. I also tried to regiter it as 32bit dll but to no avail.

Any ideas, has anybody used this tool on win7 so far?

Crash when editing the Word import setting

Auto-insert several nested elements on same level

over the EDD I have only been able to auto-insert a single child element, and then another nested element. Is there a way to auto-insert several elements on he same level?

Example: When I insert a concept element, then title and conbody elements should be inserted automatically.

Hi all,

when updating a book, RH cannot open a certain file. It just tells "impossible to open" and that I should make sure that FM is installed. There are no problems with the other files. Also there is no problem when I open this file in FM directly (no broken insert references etc.).

Do you have any idea what we should look for in this file that may be causing this problem?

RH10 fails to update linked FM files on 64bit systems

Hi all,

on two separate Win7 64bit systems I found a very strange behavior using TCS4. Linked FM files suddenly are not updated any more. When I change them, RH actually notifies me with the yellow icon. When I update, everything seems fine - but RH actually does not do anything and the changes to the files are not converted to the RH project.

Rebooting etc. does not help, the only way to get RH going again is to rename the linked FM file. Then the update works again - for a while until the issue appears again.

Any ideas? I have been wondering could this have anything to do with the Win7 system cash?

Change position of all anchored frames in document

.. or alternatively applying an object style to all frames. Is there any way to do this with a few clicks rather than editing every single frame? If not then I probably have to try scripting.

In this case I need to change them all from "below current line" to inline style.

Cross references in conrefs - FrameMaker does not update

Hi all,

the scenario: file A has cross refs to file B ("see chapter xxx on page yyy") and vice versa.

When I insert both files into file C via conrefs, then the cross refs do not update to show the propers chapter/page numbers when I update file C.

How can I get this to work? These are structured FM documents using the DITA 1.1 structure.

Suppress attribute window when inserting new elements

FM11 displays "DITA crossref" dialog instead of normal crossref dialog

Hi, when I click Special > crossreference then FM11 displays the new "DITA cross ref dialog". How can I open the normal dialog?

For some reasons, the developers evidently thought that writers using structured FM do not need to see chapter numbers anymore and display IDs instead. For me the numbers were the main orientation and searching for a title using only the text is a real pain.

RH10 fails to apply object styles of FM template

Hi all,
I am trying to import an FM11 document with images. These are enclosed in anchored frames and the frames are aligned right. In the HTML topics they should naturally be aligned left.
The new object styles introduced by FM11 seem like an ideal solution. I thought I could assign an image style with right alignment in the original FM document, and then in the import settings of RH select an FM template in which this same style is formatted with left alignment. However, RH ignores this different formatting of the object style in the template.
Any ideas?

DITA 1.2 EDD - unable to transfer elements due to language problem

Hi all,

the EDD files for DITA 1.2 have English element names in my German FM11 installlation. In my previous FM9 installation the element names were German. The result is that I cannot copy any context rules from FM9 to FM11 in order to transfer my layout.
It is difficult enough to work with the new EDD structure but now I am stumped. Do you have any suggestions to resolve this? I suppose, if I had an English FM9 somewhere then I could export my old EDD and receive English element names that I can copy. However I do not have FM9 available at the moment.
