Adobe CC Desktop App still has problems updating

Will Adobe EVER get this damn app working properly - it seems such a simple app yet there have been a ton of problems from day one. The latest with the update today - one of my machines closed explorer and left the desktop missing and my other PC updated CC and the app did not start again after the update. Really poor show CC desktop app team!

CC Market - not well thought-through

Just been exploring CC Market - great that we get access to all that. However, I think that the CC desktop app is completely the wrong place to host something like the CC Market, at least in it's current form. Small, non-resizeable UI for displaying many thousands of images and results. Very poorly thought through in my eyes.

The CC desktop app should either be resizeable or there should be a separate place to view the market with better search and management tools. Maybe in a future update?

AE CC 2014 (v13) settings

So I thought a new feature of AE CC 2014 was the ability to sync settings between versions. Doesn't seem to be an option.

Todd wrote an article some time ago explaining how to manually copy settings, workspaces etc between versions. Do we need to follow that again or should there be an automated process? I have a LOT of settings and workspaces to copy over.

I always fail to find what I'm looking for in the Adobe Help - never seems to be what I'm looking for or it's very difficult to find - but that's another topic!

Anyone know where I can find help on the various audio effects - particularly the third party plugins such as the iZotope multiband compressor etc?

Specifically, I'd like info on the interface, what buttons do, general usage and then going deeper into how to use the effects for various jobs.

Surely Adobe has something on this?

CS6 save for web bug

Has anyone else seen this bug?...

When saving for web - changing the image size with width/height link selected is buggy - when entering a new height, the width does not change properly.

e.g.

original size is 595px x 842px

if i enter 1200 in the height, width changes Ok as I enter 1 - 2 - 0 but not as I enter the final 0. So when I've entered 1200, the width is stuck at 85

By moving around the boxes, I can eventually get the correct width but it takes a few goes

AME CS6 H.264 failing again with Mercury PBE

I had this problem a few versions ago - AME would fail / crash / hang encoding H.264 at some point in a longish video or at some point in a series of several queued encodes. There was a forum post about this with several other people seeing the issue. I think it was fixed (certainly I've not seen the issue until recently).

I recenty installed an nVidia GTX 680 and the problem is back. (latest nVidia driver - 306.23)

If I queue up several files from Premier Pro and encode them as H.264 at some point AME will stop responding - or rather the encoder section will stop as some functions of AME will still respond i.e. menus etc but the video just sits on the same frame and never finished encoding. The sequences are all Mercury hardware accelerated.

I've done a very limited set of tests with Mercury set to software only and the problem doesn't seem to occur so far.

Footage is mostly Sony XDCAM EX 1080P MP4.

All Adobe software is up to date as of writing this post.

Intel i7 X980 3.33GHz

24 GB RAM

OS drive - SSD, media drives on fast arrays.

Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1

I guess the issue so far points to the GTX680 - maybe the issues that were seen previously are back with the new support for the GTX680?

Anyone else seen this issue again?

Effect control windows not saved with workspace

Why aren't multiple effect controls windows saved with a workspace?

I have many projects where I use a null as a controller with many sliders etc to control the animation of many layers. I open a couple of effect control windows and lock them with the contents of the controllers in them. Works great UNTIL I switch to a new workspace - even if it's based on the original and was saved with the effect control windows open in it. At that point, all effect control windows are removed.

Most frustrating as I have to then re-open, position and select layer, lock etc - takes ages.

Why aren't the effect control woindows saved, even if they're empty, it would work as you'd expect it to.

AE 12.1 all settings and workspaces trashed

Just installed 12.1 and found all of my settings have been reset and my workspaces have gone.

Is this by design or is it a bug/problem?

I'm going to try importing some projects to get my valuable workspaces back that I've spent so long refining.

Compatibility of export presets between CS5.5 and CS6?

I have a ton of custom presets that I've developed over several years. I tried importing them into CS6 by copying the custom presets from here:

\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\AME\5.0

to here:

\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\AME\6.0

I can see the custom presets in AME but only SOME of the presets in the export settings format/preset boxes from Premiere Pro CS6. e.g. AVI show up but not the presets for H264 or Windows Media formats etc (they don't appear).

Are the presets incompatible between CS5.5 and CS6 for some formats (maybe there are new settings that weren't in the old version)?

7.1 update changes how timecode effect works - bug?

Dont know if anyone else has noticed this. I have a number of projects with the timecode effect applied to an adjustment layer. The timecode effect was applied originally via preset I set up that had the TC generated from the MEDIA option. That used to work fine and was similar to the CLIP function.

However, with 7.1, this has changed - using the MEDIA option on the effect placed on an adjustment layer now results in zero TC throughout the clip.

I think that may be a bug? I would still expect it to generate timecode properly.

I had been seeing similar problems to others well documented here with the CC App not drawing dialogue boxes properly and menu items missing.

I powered up this morning and opened the CC app, to find a blank app window with a tiny dialogue box but no buttons etc - had to go into task manager to close the app. On restarting, got the same unusable app. Finally had to go to creative cloud download site and re-install the app. Now it works again to a point but still the same missing menu items and dialogue boxes that dont draw, missing buttons etc.

Obviously the app was trying to tell me that an update was available but then got stuck trying to give be a dialogue box to update - but with no button etc.

Adobe developers - absolute terrible UX and bugs! Shame

7.1 bug sending sequences with DL AE comps in

I'm seeing this quite regularly but not consistently:

I have a number of sequences in PPro that have short dynamic linked AE comps (name titles). Most of the time it's fine but many times I get an error message in AME that the sequence contains offline material (it doesn't) and that the render will be done with the offline graphic.

Win 8.1 - latest vers of Adobe apps.

Anyone else seen this?

7.1.0 update breaks MB Looks

Dynamic link - use previews not working

Very long time AE/PPro user but I don't remember coming across this issue before:

I have a sequence in PPro that has 3 dynamic linked AE comps in it. The comps are all in the same AE file. I render the entire timeline in PPro and the indicators are green for all of the AE comp sections and appear to be rendered correctly with motion blur and camera DOF etc.

I export the sequence to H264 at high data rate (a modified Vimeo export preset - 1080P) and select to use previews. However, on encoding, it appears that previews are NOT being used and AE is obviously rendering the comps again (as the export takes about an hour as opposed to about a minute if the previews were being used).

Anyone else seen this issue? Wondering if the use previews switch is broken in the current release?

9/8/13 CC Destop app PITA installer

I've just had this with the latest update to the CC desktop app on 2 machines:

Started the desktop app (still suffering problems with being logged out all the time) and the app notified me of a new version and prompted to install it which i accepted. However, after the download (2 minutes), it warned I needed admin priviledges and the installer failed.

So, I downloaded to the desktop and ran the installer from there with admin priviledges (run as administrator). Next issue was that it required the browser window to be closed (left open from the download) and the installer failed again - no option to close the browser and continue.

Next I ran it again, as administrator and it got to the end of the install and then said it needed admin priviledges - even though I'd run it as administrator!

Bit of a rant: Adobe - if you're listening - how much user testing do you do with the CC app - it would seem these are obvious problems that would be found with even the most basic user testing. Not impressed with the quality.

Anyone else had these issues?

Responsiveness of CTI with heavy effects

Before I post a feature request, I just wanted to check others also see this behaviour:

If I have a number of non-realtime effects applied to clips in a project i.e. Magic Bullet looks combined with color correction filters etc, I suffer from a laggy CTI. Now that's not too much of a problem and is to be expected. However, when you're navigating around and pushing space to play, this causes a problem most times because the playback will start at the previously rendered frame not the new selected frame.

So, if I position the CTI at a new place on the timeline and press play before Premiere has rendered the frame, playback will happen from the previous location. Very frustrating and slows down the edit.

Seems to me, what should happen is that Premiere should remember the new CTI location and start playback from there - as you might expect.

I wonder if it's the thrird party effects that are breaking the playback position?

Anyone else seen this?

Application manager not showing apps as installed

Hi,

I have a shiny new creative cloud membership and it's been activated etc. I had the master collection installed on two PC's in trial mode.

I downloaded the Adobe Application Manager (AAM) this morning and can see that the apps allow me to install again. They don't reflect that they are already installed.

1) will installing apps individually over the top of a master collection install break anything? I can't imagine it's a good idea.

2) Will the AAM show updates etc to already installed apps?

I'm a bit confused as to the best path for a new creative cloud member to install the apps - I was kind of expecting a master collection (install all apps) in the AAM.

CS6 and AME 100% CPU utilisation

So this is an odd question to ask maybe as we often asked for max CPU utilisation when encoding in the past to get stuff done quicker.

But - this is entirely new behaviour for me at least. I have a 6 core i7 X980 with HT and 24GB ram. In the past, I could queue up several sequences and let them encode to H.264 in the background while i carry on editing. Worked fine with no problems.

I recently upgraded my GPU to a 4GB GTX680 from a 1.2GB GTX570. There have also been 2 updates to PPro as well since I noticed this behaviour.

So the issue is that when encoding, all 12 threads are at 100% CPU utilisation and my mouse control suffers terribly - very very slow mouse as obviously there's not enough CPU resources to drive the pointer properly. This never happened in the past as CPU utilisation was never maxed out like this.

Anyone seen anything similar?

Can't change timezone

Just tried to change my zimezone in 'yourstuff'-'preferences' but on saving it says there has been an error (shown below) but it doesn't show the error and the timezone doesn't change.

Is this a bug or something to do with my settings maybe?

Batch edit existing files workflow?

Many years ago when working with DVCAM tape etc, I used to get a list of TC edits from a customer and simply run this through a batch capture with suitable handles. This was easy as I could leve the capture running with minimal input from me. I'd end up with just the clips I wanted.

Now I've been using Sony XDCAM cameras for many years and a file based workflow, I still have the same needs on occasion but the workflow in this case is a little slower as I have to manually set the in/out point on each clip required.

What I'm looking for is a kind of batch edit workflow where I can feed in a list of clips to be placed on a timeline (the batch text file would have TC in/out and maybe some comments although this isn't too important). The source video files already exist of course and have proper timecode.

Anyone have any ideas how to achieve this - either within Premiere or by using a third party piece of software/plugin etc?

The person that selects the clips wouldn't necessarily be able to install specialist software for logging purposes though - but it might be something I'd consider if it was cheap and VERY easy to use.

Export settings - default preset randomly changes?

I've seen this a fair bit and wanted to ask if anyone else has seen this before i file a bug report:

When exporting many sequences (from within Premiere Pro and sending to the AME queue), I'll often see a different preset selected from the one I'm currently using. Normally, the settings or preset will persist each time I export but over the latest version(s) I'm seeing this issue where the present gets set to something else entirely that I haven't used.

Not sure if it's related to AME while it's actually encoding - sometimes AME is encoding while I'm adding new sequences to the queue.

Anyone seen this?

CS6 - Effects panel view bug?

Anyone else noticed this possible bug?...

In the Effects Panel, create a custom bin - drag a few accelerated and 32 bit effects into it (like fast color corrector etc). The icons for accelerated, 32bit and YUV don't show next to the copied effect and selecting the filter button for each of these obviously doesn't show the copied effect.

I think that's a bug?

PPro CS6 Export Settings Est File Size issue

Anyone else seen a problem with the export settings showing a wildy incorrect estimated file size when exporting to WMV?

I tried a few recently and a file that actually ends up at 30MB consistently shows an estimated file size of 456MB.

I'm fairly sure it worked in CS5.5 - at least I never noticed it way off.

oh, and this happens with a couple of different sequences with different settings and also, changing the bitrate encoding and max bitrate settings makes no difference to the estimated size.

2 pass f4v fails at start of second pass

Has anyone had problems with f4v export in AME?

Single pass CBR is OK but when I created a preset with 2 pass VBR (tried various different settings), the encode fails just after it starts the second pass with an error compiling movie - unknown error.

No problems with any other encodes that I know of.

Any ideas?

CS5 3D and pre-comp/collapse transformations - bug?

Is there a known bug in CS5 with the way 3D layers are pre-comped and then displayed in a master comp?

I'm having a nightmare with the 3D of a pre-comp working and then suddenly (apparently) stopping working and the pre-comp reverting to a 2D layer.

What I did is import an .AI file with 30 odd layers - set each as 3D, distributed these in z space by using an expression on each layer. Then I pre-comped these layers and added a camera. At first I can see the 3D nature of the layers when using the camera tool. Then at some point the pre-comp seems to suddenly get treated as a single 2D layer!

I tried turning the pre-comp layer's 3D switch and collapse transformation switch on/off but it doesn't make any difference.

What did make a difference once was setting the camera from single to two node - but it then stopped working again a minute or so after and when dollying with the camera tool.

Any ideas?

9 slice scaling on swf loaded with loadmovie

If you load a swf into another swf that has a MC on the stage with 9 slice scaling setup, should 9 slice scaling work within that loaded SWF and MC? I've tried it and it doesn't in my case but wanted to be sure that this isn't a bug or limitation?

5.0.2 and GTX 480 / 470

Probably one for Adobe:

The 5.0.2 update adds support for the GTX470 but not the GTX480 - I was a bit surprised that the 480 was missing as it seems to have a very similar architecture to the 470 but faster and more cores etc.

Can anyone shed some light on what the differences are with MPE support on the two cards?

CS5 doesn't import native Sony PMW-350 XDCAM files properly

I posted a little while ago that Premiere Pro CS4 doesn't read/import native Sony XDCAM EX PMW-350 files properly - no audio is imported.

I was hoping CS5 would change this but after some testing, it's (almost) as bad - audio is imported this time but only 2 of the 4 channels. Audio playback is very weird - a very high pitch playback just like the footage has been significantly sped up. Maybe there's a problem setting the sample rate etc on conforming.

If I convert the files to MXF, they seem to play and edit OK - so far.

Anyone else got a PMW-350?

5.0.2 - Dynamic linked AE projects sometimes fail to load

I've started seeing dynamically linked After Effects comps failing to load, seemingly randomly. I wonder if anyone else is seeing this:

For example, I have one recent project that has 10 linked AE comps which are all part of one AE file. Sometimes all 10 comps load fine but on other times, a couple of them don't load and are shown as offline. Selecting 'link media' and re-linking the file then works fine.

No errors in the Premiere error window apart from the usual errors I get about unspecified errors conforming the AE .cfa files (which I've always had on most projects that have AE links). Maybe I should post about those too...

5.0.3 update?

I got really excited this morning when I saw the 5.0.3 update for most of the CS5 master apps - but then saw (I think) that it was only for something to do with Live or help.

Can someone confirm that there are no bug fixes etc for PPro itself? The info linked to via the updater is a bit confusing.

Time remapping on EX clip crashes PPro

Anyone else seen problems with time remapping EX1/3/350 clips?

I have a clip that speed was initially set to 1000% and then further time remapped. Adding a second remap point then caused Premiere to crash ungracefully (no response) whenever the map handles were dragged, modified etc.

Maybe it's the combination of speed change and then a separate time remap?

CS5 memory leak or memory problems?

I was happily editing away this morning for a couple of hours - ran one output via AME and then all of a sudden, PPro started taken A VERY long time saving - 10 minutes or so.

A quick look at task manager showed all available memory used up and Win 7 (64 bit) was paging frantically to disk.

PPro was using just over 7Gb of the 8Gb in this system - which I've not seen before. There are a few linked AE comps (very simple) but AE is only using 3MB in task manager.

This particular project hadn't changed at all in this session - I'd simply opened it up and saved it as a new file name.

Next step to restart the PC - I'm sure it'll then be fine, but we'll see...

So something is well astray here. Anyone else seen similar behaviour?

Colour picker not working on comp windows

Has anyone else seen this bug/problem or maybe I'm missing something?...

When creating a new solid and using the colour picker to try and select a colour from an open comp window or layer window, the colour picker doesn't work - it just shows grey. It does work over any of the AE user interface though.

Timecode effect - feature request good idea?

Just wondering if a feature request to modify the timecode effect is a good one:

I use the timecode effect on clips and sequences a LOT.

I find that with many different revisions of a project, that I very clearly need to label each version on screen and right next to the timecode. I can use the standard prefixes or the hour counter maybe but an even better method would be to have a custom three letter prefix (or maybe more). So I could label it something more meaningful like ED1 00:12:16:00 etc.

I know I can also use a title to achieve the same - but it's a bit of a PITA to do that.

So, wouldn't a customisable timecode prefix be great? Thoughts???

(Oh, just thought, there isn't a way that anyone knows of to modify the existing prefixes is there?)

CS5 undocked windows positions move

I wonder if anyone else has seen this - I'm not sure if it's a Premiere or graphics driver / OS issue?

CS5

Dual screen setup (1920x1200) on one graphic card - nVidia 9600 GT

I created a new workspace and undocked several panels and arranged them in one main panel. Main app was maximised on the left screen, undocked panel was arranged on the right hand screen.

When I restart PPro, the undocked panel is shifted down the screen by approx. 100 pixels or so.

Anyone seen this behaviour?

Not a huge problem but just one of those little annoyances.

CS5 feature request - audio import?

Does anyone else think a feature request to add an "ask" option for PREFERENCES-AUDIO-DEFAULT TRACK FORMAT would be a great idea?

I'm constantly having to switch between stereo and mono etc when importing different types of files from different camera types etc. A pain.

Sony PMW-350 XDCAM EX footage does not import into PP CS4

I have the new Sony PMW-350 XDCAM EX camera - just tried importing a load of footage shot last week - importing the raw MP4 files from the media browser just like EX3 footage that I edit all the time in the same way.

Unfortunately, the video imports but no audio. The clip shows a single mono channel but no audio data in it (i.e. no sound at all).

If I convert to MXF using the Sony Clip Browser, it seems to work OK though.

I guess this footage in it's native form is just incompatible with PPro - anyone else tried this?

Also, I recently installed Windows 7 64 bit on one of my edit PC's - this behaves even worse and on playback of the clips will hang. Even the MXF files hang. Not done much troubleshooting yet in W7 though, so there could be something else contributing to the problem.

Motion Effect missing from some clips

I've seen others reporting this problem a while ago - I'm sure it's a bug.

Editing a project with a number of sequences in it - at some point I then notice that many clips don't have the motion effect section available in effect controls. If I try to copy and paste the motion section, Premiere crashes:

Premiere pro has encountered an error.

[..\..\Src\Component\ComponentChain.cpp-498]

I'm guessing it's because the reference to the motion section in the XML project has either become corrupt or is missing and pasting it in causes the crash?

I started the project in 4.2 and possibly upgraded to 4.21 - but not convinced that's the reason for the problem?

Does anyone know if this is a reported bug/problem? I will report it if not.

Problems with long text justification in titler

I posted about a year ago on this issue and after recently completing a long title roll, am seeing exactly the same issues. I wonder if anyone knows if this is a known issue or can reproduce it themselves? Details are:

I set up a new title in a 1024x768 project using desktop mode. Set the title to a roll and used the text area tool to create a new title box. I then import a large amount of text, say 7-8 pages of a doc at around 12 point. I cut and paste the text from a Windows text file.

Select the text and apply a style to it - so far so good.

The title is OK at this point and words wrap OK.

Drag the bottom of the text box to fit all the text - bit of a pain with long titles though as you have to extend it bit by bit (dragging the window down to a thin sliver helps a bit and reduces the number of resizes needed).

Then I start moving through the text and setting names in one style and the following paragraph in another style. At some point in this editing process the text justification and word-wrap breaks. Suddenly I find that previously ok word wraps now break the line mid-word and I have to now go through checking for badly wrapped words and orphans etc.

Worse than this, on very long titles (the last one I did rolled over 25 minutes), ANY change high up in the title can cause the justification/word wrapping to randomly break further down in the title. This means that for every set of changes, you have to manually scroll through the title and check everything with a fine tooth comb - orphans and text wrapping inconsistencies are easy to miss. This significantly increases the time it takes to perform this type of project.

So, has anyone else seen this problem?

I'm pretty sure I did report it as a bug over a year ago but in 4.1 it's still there.

Sony XDCAM EX Timecode - any sign of a fix?

Anyone heard anything yet on a fix for the timecode issues with Sony XDCAM EX footage import? i.e. all imported timecode starts incorrectly at 0:00:00:00.

Premiere, Media Encoder and Flash Cue Points - bug?

I've been encoding a number of FLV On2 VP6 videos recently and using the new Media Encoder. For this project we need flash cue points (nav and event). I've discovered some weird things in Media Encoder - it's been duplicating cue points (or maybe the export from Premiere is buggy with cue points?).

I've seen the first couple of cue points getting duplicated with the first letter of the name capitalised and moved a frame on in time - very weird.

Anyone else seen this behaviour?

Premiere unresponsive at times when playing video

I've seen this in CS3 as well but seems to be worse in CS4. Sometimes when playing back video (HD), the transport controls will become completely unresponsive i.e. pressing space bar will not stop playback. Other areas of the Premiere UI will turn white and not get refreshed. Playback will sometimes stop after several seconds but often will not stop until the end of the timeline is reached.

How frustrating is this! Especially when on a tight deadline!

Anyone else seen this behaviour?

Placing clip marker halts playback

I believe pressing Num Mult key (*) during playback in the clip source window should place an unnumbered marker on the clip. However, it stops playback on my system. REALLY annoying as I use this feature (in CS3) to place regular beat markers to help sync music etc.

Anyone else have this problem or know if it's a known bug?

Titler in CS4 - is it fixed?

Can anyone tell me if the hugely buggy titler is fixed/improved in CS4?

Items like:
1) tools panel creep
2) word wrapping bug in very long titles (where all of a sudden, word wrapping seems to turn off and words get broken across lines)
3) graphics problems with selection boxes and text outline boxes etc getting left on screen - general mess after a few minutes editing a title!

The titler has to be the most frustrating pieces of software I've used in years!

REALLY POOR show Adobe - why is it taking sooo long to get this out? I can't preview a DVD for more than about 7-8 button presses before I get an out of memory error :( (XP SP2 2Gb ram, P4 Dual 3GHz)

General Error or Crash using menu button on chapter playlists

This is my first complex project in 2.0 - I needed to have approx 120 clips playable individually from a series of still menus. Given the 99 timeline limit, I created a number of timelines and placed batches of clips on them. I'm then using individual chapter playlists to reference each clip. The chapter playlist is linked from a menu button.

When using the menu remote button when a chapter playlist is playing, I either get an 'abnormal condition' error, or occasionally, Encore crashes with no message at all. Tried this with no menus, timelines and playlists open but same errors.

More detail:

PAL 16:9 project
28 timelines
65 chapter playlists
15 still menus
approx 120 mpv clips and associated wavs (mpv encoded with cinemacraft encoder sp)

Settings for one of the clips giving problems:

Timeline - end action not set, menu remote - return to last menu, all ops permitted, no chapter end actions
Chapter playlist - end action - return to last menu, override not set, menu remote - return to last menu, all ops permitted.

I think I can stop the errors and crashes if I disable the menu remote button - but I don't really want to do this.

Any ideas what's going on? Is it a bug(S)?

Preventing chapter skip between sections?

I have a reasonably complex menu system and each final menu has links to small clips which need to be played individually. The clips are assembled on a number of timelines - approx 12 or so on each. Each of the chapter markers on the timelines has an end action to return to the previous menu.

All works fine by using the menus - but was wondering if there's a way to prevent the user from using the prev/next chapter button to move out of the 'series' of clips within each menu but still allow use of the buttons to move within the series? i.e. if you use the next chapter button too much, you end up somewhere you weren't expecting!

Is this possible?
