Any issues to be aware of when upgrading a project from RH8 to RH11?

We currently have a project using RH8 and RoboSource Control3.1 and will be upgrading to RH11. The output is WebHelp. Are there any issues or concerns we should be on the look out for?

We are using RH8. We have a project that needs updating to be current with newest software release. There is a project manager in the home office and a technical writer working remotely in another state. Our IT staff followed all the steps listed on setting up the SourceControl and this is what is occurring:

I've tried it both as file system and as full embedded database solution. For files based solution I did create a history path. This is what I was working on Friday. I had to set up another test machine here with RoboHelp in order to test it. Same problem. I can check out from either machine and checkin in. However the changes never get propagated to the other instance, even if you do a Get All.

Not sure if this is related, but the open project from Source Control does not work from within Robo Help 8 either. When I try to open a project that way, it just sits there on the open file dialog box. From what the tutorial showed, it should start downloading the files and then you select the project file to open.

I setup a brand new test database and project

This one is using embedded database, not stored as files.

Open project on other machine and get all files

Changes not reflected

Here it is in the project directory... note the mod dates... the file is not updated.

I would be so very grateful if someone could help figure out what is going on. Thank you in advance.

RH8-Question about setting up RoboSource Control 3.1

I am using RH8 and I want to use RoboSource Control 3.1 to manage a project with two authors. One author will be working remotely. When a file is checked out, does the connection to the server need to be maintained or can it be worked on locally and then checked back in?

What does this warning Message mean?

Currently my company has two licenses for RoboHelp8 both are installed locally on PC's. We are attempting to install and use SourceControl so two people can work on the same project at the same time. Our IT guy downloaded a trial copy of RH8 without a serial number to play with to make sure the Source Control is working properly. He tried to open a project that was completed using RH8 and got this message. All instances are updated.

Can anyone help me with this and suggest a method that will allow him to test the Source Control given our scenario above?

Can I convert an existing project to a Merged Project?

I am using RH8. I need to update an existing WebHelp Project and was wondering if I could convert it to a Merged Web Help Project. I want to avoid starting from scratch. I am hoping that it can be done because two people will be working on updating the project simultaneously and I want to avoid using Source Control if possible. Does anyone have feedback or suggestions on tackling this? Thank you in advance for your input and help.

Works fine in Firefox. I am desperate for a fix because we want to deliver this updated Help with our product to new client. Is there a fix for this?

Follow up: We decided to put the Help on our server and have clients point there. It works ok but there was some odd behavior. On their own, the TOC, Index, and Search all worked as expected. However, if I used the Index and navigated around, then the contents of the TOC and Search would be blank. Likewise if I used the Search and navigated around, then the contents of the TOC and Index would be blank. I had to refresh the screen (F5 or Refresh in the browser window) to get them back.

Can anyone suggest a fix?

I am currently updating all the child projects in a merged RH8 webHelp. I prefer to work in a development directory on my hard drive and then transfer to my company's shared drive. Can I update the content of each child and create links within that child and then move the updated child to the shared drive using the proper merged help structure? At what point can I create the links between child projects? Do I generate the each child then create the links between child projects and then create the merged help? I am concerned that my directory structure is conveluted and I would like to simplify it with this update. I need some guidance on the best practice on how to order my tasks. Thank you in advance for any help you may offer.

smaller images from linking Word doc not showing in RH8 Webhelp

I am using RH8 and linking Word Documents. Will generate as WebHelp. All images are pasted into the word documents using Snagit. The images are varying in size and need to be that way. It seems as though RH8 imports larger images as .jpg files and display fine but converts the smaller ones to .png files and they are not displayed. Only a box is displayed saying the image file is missing for the smaller .png files. The larger .jpg files display fine. Why are they coming in as different types? Does anyone know of a work around to fix this? Upon searching the forum for an answer I only found a script that will make all images one size. Is there a setting either in Word or RH8 that needs to be adjusted? Thank you for your help.

Need guidance on upgrading RH5 Merged WebHelp project to RH8

I just upgraded from RH5 to RH8 to use with a new product my company is developing. I have quite a large merged help project that I have been editing and reorganizing. I have a version published and in use but I have an updated version about 75% finished. I would like to do in RH8. Is there anything I need to watch for or recommended method to upgrading each child and then the parent? Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

I could use some input on the benefits/drawbacks of WebHelp versus FlashHelp. I currently have RX5 but will be upgrading to RX8 this month. Our company is getting ready to release new software with the latest technology in our industry the first qtr next year and we want the Help to be the best it can be. RH5X Merged WebHelp

I have a Merged WebHelp project with 6 children. The help is for a software system with 6 different components (children). The users could remain in 1 child to do all their searching. However, some of my children share core topics. My dilemma is how to create a topic that is in child 1 but can also be displayed in child 2. I could create a cross project link from child 1 to child 2, but will the topic show up in child 2's TOC? Each child has its own TOC. Also if I create a cross project link from child 1 to child 2 can the users easily get back to child 2? I have cut and pasted and created duplicate topics in the past but I want to avoid that it my new revised Help. I am sorry that I am not explaining this very well. I have read Peter Grainge's info but could not find an answer to this question. Thank you in advance for your help.

TOC not in sync in Merged Project

I hope this makes sense. I have Merged Help Project done the old way (not the Grainge way) because I don't have any links from the parent to the children. Everything came out nicely except when I click on a topic within a main topic (book) and then go back to the main topic (book) I expect that the window will go back to the main page for that book. The books are not linked with the intro page. Is that the problem? Also I expect that when I hit the refresh button it should go back to the main intro page and it doesn't. It just stays at the last topic I looked at.

I put the change into checkFillStub(line 1306) to fix to force sync but it did not work. Sorry for the cryptic explanation. Anybody have a thought?

Need advice on using X5 with .Net

We currently have X5 (not pro). My company develops products that are SAS AF based using SQL. The WebHelp on those products was written using X5 and does not incorporate context sensitive help. Our developers are working on our first product using Microsoft's .net. We would also like to incorporate context sensitive help. We are tyring to determine if we need to upgrade to Pro or Pro .net or if we can use X5. Can anyone give me suggestions on the direction we should go? If we decide to remain with X5, does anyone have some tested methodology for incorporating context sensitive help they want to share?
