Why is the merge parent creating folders for and publishing all the contents of the child projects?

Hello again,

I'm using RH10 under TFS. Previously when I published my merged project, parent and two child projects, once I published the parent, the published file structure was Parent/mergedProjects/Child 1 and Parent/mergedProjects/Child 2 (note the spaces: my xpj files are called Child 1.xpj and Child 2.xpj). I have been berated for having fragile links (my only excuse is I'm completely self taught with anything web and RH based) and am trying to get rid of the spaces, so I changed the publish path in the two child projects to not have any spaces, thought that would do it. I do what I've learned here (thanks, Peter!) and publish my parent, then each of the child projects. The problem is that the parent is publishing both child projects at the same time and publishing an old version of the project without my latest changes, with the wrong folder names. I'm very frustrated. I think it has to do with the fact that my .xpj files have spaces in them and that's where it's taking the folder names from when I define the two child projects in the parent TOC. If, during that process, I pick the Child 1.xpj file and then where it says Project Name, I enter Child1, it then creates three folders under mergedProject: Child 1, Child 2 and Child1.

Why is the parent publishing all this old stuff? As far as I know, it should only be publishing itself and setting up the mergedProject folder so that I can publish the child projects which then create their own folders during the publish, if they don't exist before.

If it is the .xpj that is used as the name of the mergedProject child folder, can I rename that file so there are no spaces in it? Project is under TFS version control and the documentation here says I can't if it is under version control. Again, if that's the issue, can I just remove it from version control and then rename the project in order to change the .xpj file name?

Recommendations for reducing output size

Hello,

My RoboHelp 10 merged project has three SSL outputs: Windows, Linux and Mac versions. Each image in the project therefore has three versions. I have 194 topics, not a huge project, IMO. The generated output for the Windows version is 30.8 MB, which is 1,008 files, about 500 of which are image files, 27 folders. Theoretically, this means that all three versions when published have a total size on disk in the area of 90+ MB. My issue is that I work on the project locally, generate locally, publish to a remote source controlled location and then the network guys copy the published output to a web server. They want me to find out if I can reduce the size of the project so it takes as little time as possible for them to copy it. The copy is the slowest part of the whole thing, including my publish.

One thing I noticed after the last time I published is that every so often, RoboHelp seems to publish extraneous files/folders to the output that should not be there, as in when compared to a local generated version, they are not in the generated version (which clears the output folder each time). When I cleaned up those extra files after our last publish, the size on disk reduced from 45MB to 31MB. Should I just be watching out for the "extra" unwanted/unnecessary folders and deleting them or is there more I can do within my RoboHelp project to reduce the published size?

I've been using RoboHelp since RH8 but just jumped right into it without any training or help, apart from what I've received here (thank you all!) so although my projects look good and perform well, any help would be appreciated! At this point, it is taking so long that the network guys want me to look into switching to another tool that one of them knows. I've invested a lot of time and effort into RH, not really interested in another learning curve.

Cannot save a published RH 10 HTML page using File/Save in browser

I published my RH 10 Help documentation and it's available on the internet. It looks good, everything works, pages display well. I have however had the comment/complaint from my team that people cannot save web pages properly in any browser using the File/Save option. In IE (I'm using IE 10), choosing File/Save As... allows me to save the file as .htm but when it is opened, the file is empty: all there is inside are the HTML open and close tags.

I don't know why they would want to do it but I've been asked to find out why it won't save as a full page, and if I can change that.

RoboHelp 10 install is not working

I had RoboHelp 10 on my Windows Vista machine, a volume licensed copy that I downloaded and installed locally, and it was running perfectly. Then, per company policy, I had to upgrade to Windows 7. Did my backups, upgraded and now, when I try to install the previous version of RoboHelp 10, it asks me for a license number, which it didn't the last time I installed. So I went back to our repository and downloaded the install of RoboHelp 10 that is there, ran it to install it, it goes all the way through the command window, tells me the install is finished and to press a key to remove the temp files, I press, the window disappears and there is no RoboHelp 10 in the Start menu. I tried rebooting to see if it would appear: it is not there. Ended up trying this twice with the same result.

I'm desperate as I have something to turn in shortly so I installed the trial version for 30 days to buy myself some time until I can fix this. Any ideas?

Changing the look of the Index widget

Hi, I'm working in RH10 Multiscreen HTML5 with an Android Tablet layout. I've successfully published it and am now trying to clean up little things that testers have commented on. On the Index page, my bottom entry in the index is the word "White", which should return two values when touched. However, those two values fall below the bottom edge of the screen, with no indication to scroll down to see them, so once you've touched there does not appear to be any result to your touch.

I'm trying to figure out some way to show what the TOC has, with the > and >> and two down arrows (NodePage, NodeOpenBook and NodePage). Is there a way for me to define additional stuff either in the Index page under the Android Tablet Layout or somewhere else in the project?

Perhaps my answer will have to be that I add another word to the index after White which will have only one place to go so there is no confusion like this.

What I want it to look like without scrolling down as it is not evident from above pic that you need to scroll down.

Making project copy while removed from version control in TFS did not work in RH10

Hi all,

I finished one version of my project in RH9, removed it from version control in TFS, copied the entire project to a new folder called RH10, updated the copied project to RoboHelp 10 and then placed it back under version control in TFS. Although my .xpj file is being opened from the new folder, when RH checks in files to TFS, my files are still listed as located in the old RH9 folder on my local machine. I had wanted to keep that old folder as a previous version (luckily I actually made two copies of it when it was out of version control!) but don't know how to set RH10 up so that it is using the files in the new folder and saving them there.

I saw these directions in another post, based on a Rick Stone article which I personally have not been able to find, but am not sure if this works for TFS as well. Caution in this case being the better part of valour, would one of you gurus confirm or deny for me please?

1. Open the project you want to copy in RoboHelp, and make sure you ‘get’ the latest set of files from RSC. Close the project.

2. In Windows Explorer, copy the local version of the RoboHelp project to a new folder.

3. Select all the files in the new folder and make sure they are all writable (right-click > Properties > untick Read only > OK).

4. Delete the copy’s <projectname>.cpd and pblsvrs.sss files.

5. Open the copy’s <projectname>.xpj file in Notepad and replace this section:

No Multiscreen HTML5 option appears in Single Source Layout after upgrading project from RH9

I opened my project in RH10 and upgraded it. Now when it opens, there is no choice for Multiscreen HMTL5 either in the Project Settings or in the Singe Source Layout panel. The project was previously generated/published using WebHelp but the whole idea was to be able to move it to Multiscreen layouts. Any suggestions?

Permission denied error in whstart.js after generating from RH10

I am running a very small (1 topic) project to test out RH10. After generating and getting the yellow bar warning at the top, I added Mark of the Web and re-generated. Then my IE8 page just flashed over and over again until I hit Cancel and looked at the errors:

The first four are repeated many times until I hit Cancel on the page. In whver, whutils, whmsg and whstub, Line 1, Char 1 is a / to start a comment // and is greyed out in the code reader in Dreamweaver. Line 47, Char 1 in whstart is v from the word var.

I took out and then reinserted Mark of the Web, the page now loads properly but takes a very long time to do so: it has been loading already for over a minute and just loaded.

Can anyone tell me why I got those messages? And secondly, why is it loading so slowly?

Why are breadcrumbs in my child project showing the (excluded) parent project path?

I have a merged project in RoboHelp 9. When I am running just the child project from that child project's index.htm, I still show the breadcrumbs from the parent project, and users can click on that breadcrumb and access the parent pages, which they are not supposed to do.

Unfortunately, I had already set up the merged project in the structure Parent>mergedProjects>child 1 before I read Peter Grainge's piece about using the fake parent with the redirect to the childs. Is the only way to remove my parent project breadcrumbs for me to start all over again and set them up as he described? it doesn't make sense to me that the parent would be showing in the child's breadcrumbs.

How to remove tags only visible in Live Code view?

I have another page, an order form, that is working and that I copied as a template for my current page. However, when I press Live View for my new form, internalorder.asp, nothing appears in the Live Vew box. In Code View, I see the following at the bottom of my code:

If I choose Live Code, I see extra tags at the bottom of the code.

</head><body></body></html>

I have checked and rechecked, all my html, head and body tags are open and closed similarly to the original page. It displays properly in Design View, just won't display (I'm assuming because of the extra tags) in Live View or in a browser. How do I get rid of the </head><body> in that last line when I can't see them in Code View and can't edit in Live Code?

Any suggestions? I'm a newbie (like you can't tell) so plain English is a good idea, please.

Conditional build expressions and publishing

Hello all,

I have a project that generates three different layouts: 1) Parent Z with a child project A containing another child project B, 2) The child project A which contains the other child project B and 3) a new second set of a project C based on A which contains another child project D based on B. A and B have conditional builds which exclude pictures and text meant for C and D and vice versa. I have been publishing 1 and 2 without any issues and published number 3 recently to a completely new location, which results in another large directory being used.

The gentleman in charge of our servers wants to know if I can publish one project that will contain all the variables so that space used on the server is minimized. I have been publishing each one to a different location and he is seeing that there are duplicate file names in each folder. I have tried to explain that the contents inside the files are different but he has asked me to be sure I can't do it all in one location from the same files and have it just run each one within that folder. Don't know if I'm making sense but thanks for any help you can give me!

Onmouseover image files not included with generated output

I am running RoboHelp 9 HTML. I am publishing a small change to our project, usually quite uneventful. After the last publish to the server, someone went to test it and told me that although my change went through, my onmouseover events are now not working. None of these were part of the change so I did not touch them for this change. Looking at the generate and publish folders, I do not see the image files belonging to the mouseover event there at all, like they didn't take part in the generate and publish and were completely left out. Any ideas?

Why do duplicates of the child folder get generated in the parent folder outside of mergedProjects?

I'm using WebHelp layout in RoboHelp 9 When I generate and publish my parent project, it creates the following structure:

Parent
- Child 1
- mergedProjects
  - Child 1
  - Child 2
- Child 2

Why? My project is quite large and this effectively doubles the size of the project as all the Child folders contain all the files they should. It makes my publishing to a remote server extremely long too as double the content is moving over.

I followed Peter's instructions to the letter but cannot get rid of these extra Child folders without physically deleting them.

Generate and publish to TFS server

I am using RoboHelp HTML version 9.0.0.228/Windows Vista/Microsoft Visual Sudio 2010 Ultimate version 10.0.30319 and TFS. I am not sure if it's just that I'm so new to this that I'm not understanding the flow but it seems to me that when I generate and publish my merged project that has been opened using TFS, the generated/published version should reside on the TFS server to maintain version control. I am not the person who will move the Webhelp folder to the webserver and cannot map to the TFS server either so that I can pick it when I'm generating/publishing.

I'm finding this a bit frustrating. Can anyone clear this up for me?
