Encoding DV footage to smaller file file for archiving?

I have a project shot in DV that I need to archive in case I have to do a new edit of the program in a couple of years.

Each camera master is saved as basically a 1 hour avi file but that averages out to 13 GB per file. Too large to archive onto a single DVD. I could go to bluray but would prefer to stay on DVD if possible.

What type of file should I be encoding to in PP (CS6) to get the smallest size file, that I can edit later on in PP if necessary, but still retain the quality of the original camera master tape - so I never have to touch the camera tapes again?

Changing AE template size

I'm new to CS6 and AE. Using Windows 7.

I was planning on purchasing an AE template from Video Hive and it's 1920 x 1080

But the project I need it for is DV (720 x486).

How do I change the size of the template in AE (make it smaller to 720x486) without cutting off parts of the image or even some of the titles on the template.

5.1 workflow in PP cs6?

I'm working on my first CS6 project that will also have 5.1 surround (another first).

I can't find any tutorials on this so I'm looking for some direction here.

What's the proper workflow for creating 5.1 surround for a project?

On my PP CS6 timeline - I have my audio tracks with audio clips. Then I also have a Master 5.1 track.

No audio clips can be placed in the Master 5.1 track.

I'm assuming once I finish editing my project with audio. I send it to audition where I mix the tracks down to

the Master 5.1 track.. Then send the Master 5.1 track back to my Premiere pro timeline.

Once there - Delete the other audio clips so I only have the Master 5.1 track?

Why does footage darken when you move it on timeline?

I keep noticing this so I thought I would ask.

Windows 7 cs5.5

After I drag a clip from my source monitor into my timeline it looks normal.

In the timeline area, I drag the start of the clip to where I want my in point to be. Then do the same with the out point on the clip.

Clip looks fine in my program monitor.

I then drag the clip on the timeline over to the left behind the clip in the sequence (where I want it to go).

Suddenly the clip is darkened or completely black in the program monitor.

I also noticed once - I unlinked the video and audio in a clip. Then extended the audio to the left on the timeline.

Basically making the audio 4 seconds longer than the video. The clip in the program monitor turned Black during playback.

Just wondering what causes this and how to avoid?

using canopus 110 with cs5.5 hook up?

I'm having trouble getting hi8 footage that I'm running through a canopus 110 into my system (windows 7 CS5.5).

I have SVIDEO going to the canopus SVIDEO connection on the front of the canopus 110. I have two rca audio out cables going into the canopus audio inputs on the front of the 110.

I'm using the firewire connection on the back of the canopus unit to power the the canopus via the firewire on my system.

I'm then taking the front canopus firewire output into my firewire cable that connected to my Intensity Pro card. This is the same firewire cable I transfer dv footage over without problems.

I expected this to work without having to change any settings in cs5.5. No footage shows up.

Under capture settings in CS5.5, I click on edit as it is set on DV. No footage is showing up.

My alternative choice on the edit screen in capture settins is HDV or blackmagic capture so I change DV to blackmagic capture and nothing comes through as well.

Any help is appreciated.

? on hi8 - composite or component

I find myself having to transfer a old hi8 tape.

I'll be using SVIDEO out of the deck into my editing system.

Trying to decide if I need SVIDEO to composite cable or SVIDEO to component cable.

Problem is I don't have a svideo in on my system.

I can do composite or component in (with rca cables)

Since I'm coming SVIDEO out with hi8 - do I really get any more quality going with component (3 rca cables) rather than just staying with composite (2 rca cables)?

Hopefully this is the right forum group to post this.

I tried calling Adobe Support today three times to alert them to either Adobe sending out Free CS6 license keys or a scam email and gave up after 3 telephone disconnects:

1st call was quickly disconnected. 2nd call I spoke to a gentleman who transferred me to customer service where I was disconnected before reaching anyone. And a 3rd time when I spoke to a woman in Adobe customer service and was disconneted after explaining the problem. I wish Adobe would fix their telephone disconnections.

Problem is: Today I received a email from a sender simply listed as ADOBE. The email which I did not open contains "License Key" attachment. If I hold my cursor over the email it is thanking me for purchasing CS6.

I have not purchased CS6 yet (I still have CS5.5 Production Premium which I purchased last September).

If any one from Adobe cares about this issue please feel free to contact me through PM.

Can you see which timeline clips are being used in Media Browser?

I'm a relatively new user and may not be familiar enough with cs5.5 but

is there a way to see what clips are being used on the editing timeline in the media browser.

I open premiere pro - Project is loaded. I edit the scene until it is finished.

When I look over at the media browser, all my raw clips (some of which I'm

using on the editing timeline) look the same - I can't tell which ones I using on the timeline.

The reason I ask - when I fiinish editing a scene it would be nice to glance over at the

media brower folder where my raw clips are located - easily see which ones I'm using because they

are highlighted or checked and then delete the ones I no longer need.

Is there a way to do this now?

Hi All -

New PP user here. Just bought a new system with CS5.5 and have been very impressed. Watched a lot of tutorials and a lot of online reading. Excited to get started. But still have a few questions that I couldn't find the answer to through searches. Probably easy answers as I'm not familiar enough with the software yet.

1)I'm confused about folder placement for my raw video and audio (like sound effects/music).

My drives are C (OS and programs), E (source) and F (Render).

I currently have a folder called "Film Raw" for video on E. And a Folder marked "Music" and another folder marked "Sound Effects".

All on E drive. I've read in a couple of places online that I need to keep the video and audio on separate drives? True? - If true then I need to move the audio to F? Also - anywhere on the E drive is ok or do I need to place these folders into my ADOBE PROJECTS FOLDER on E?

Just want to make sure I have the folders set up for best use.

2) Also - is this a correct workflow

Editing a 90 minute film. On my previous editing system I would edit the entire film on one timeline. With CS5.5, I should break the film's scenes down into PP's sequences. Scene 1 = Sequence 1, Scene 2 = Sequence 2, then when all the scenes/sequences are completely edited/work done in Auditon - Then I need to nest the finished sequences together for the final master?

I would like to "switch" to Adobe production Premium cs5.5 with your 50% offer but I was told I'm not allowed to by your customer service?

This offer is available to editors interested in switching from their current tool of choice to Premiere Pro or Production Premium.

My current tool of choice is SpeedEdit which is part of my Newtek Video Toaster 5 system. Since you opened up the offer to include other editing software packages like Sony Vegas Pro, why not Newtek's VT5 with SpeedEdit?

Advice to Premiere newbie - asking on specific system build

Hi all,

I'm coming here to get some advice. I'm not computer savy/will be unable to build my own PC.

Brief background: I make independent films (finished product is usually 90 minutes - 2 hrs in length plus supplemental materials for the extras on the DVD).

I currently edit with Newtek's SpeedEdit with Video Toaster 5 on a Quad Core Windows XP system (2.5GHZ 1333 FSB with a 8800GTS 512 MB graphics card, and 2 GB of SATA storage for DV footage (with Lightwave 3D for animation so a new upgraded graphics card will definitely be useful) - I'm use to real time editing (no extended background render waits), perfect playback. Due to my 32 bit system I'm stuck with AE CS4 at the moment. I will also be upgrading to a HD camera this summer either the Canon XL-H1, Sony Hvr-z7U or possibly one of the Sony PMW Ex's depending on how well I do putting the editing system together.

I've decided my next editing software will be Premiere Pro (Abobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium).

Besides Premiere Pro, AE and Encore will be very important to me as will Lightwave 3D for animation. And the need for 2-3 monitors.

Would love some feedback on the following system based on my needs which I can purchase New for a very good price -

Antec P183 case

Heatsink/Cooler: Corsair H70

Intel Core I7 960 (4 core - splits each core into two threads = 8 virtual cores)

NVidia Quadro 4000 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5

My main concerns:

1) Smooth playback/great system for Premiere Pro HD editing

2) Great system/enough power for AE

3) Great system for using Encore

4) Plenty of hard drive space for HD footage (my current system with 2TB of drive space is perfect for DV footage - I can get raw footage for editing from almost 2 projects on the Hard drives and the finished projects rendered out and still have about 50% of the drive space left. Would like something similar on my new system for HD footage). I would rather have more space than needed and not come in close or without enough room.

5) Would like to have the different premiere pro tool sets across three monitors when I'm editing (can the above system do 3 or only 2 monitors with the Quadro 4000). If only 2 what upgrade would get me to 3 monitors?
