On my iPad, I can swipe from the InDesign pages to the HTML article, but once I land on that HTML article, I can no longer swipe away from it.

This is probably too much of an open question, but could anyone here suggest what might be interfering with the swipe action in that HTML? I didn't code it but I can see a lot of Javascript going on in there, so a suggestion of what kind of thing to start looking for would be helpful.

Note: I can touch a non-interactive area of the HTML page to call up the DPS HUD and navigate to other pages that way, but swiping left or right on that same area does nothing.

Ali

Third MP3 in an MSO disables all the buttons

I have a three-state MSO and three buttons to call up each state. I add an MP3 to a state, fine. I add a second MP3 to another state, still OK.

But when I add a third MP3 to the remaining state, the MSO seems to freeze up. Previewing the article shows by default whichever state was active on-screen in InDesign (rather than the state at the top of the Object States panel) and the buttons that are supposed to switch between states do not work.

It does no matter which MP3 I remove from the artlcle - first, second or third - but as soon as I'm back to just two MP3s, everything starts working properly again.

Advice would be very welcome.
How to clear desktop Content Viewer crash problem?

Please could someone remind me how to do this?

I have an InDesign CS6 doc on a server that crashes InDesign when I try to preview it to the desktop Content Viewer - but only on one specific Mac. The same doc previews fine to Content Viewer on other Macs in the office. The Mac in question can preview other docs in Content Viewer.
UI changes in v25 - clarification please

In the v25 release notes, it says with respect to UI changes:

"The Home button is now the Library button in multi-folio apps. The function of the Browse button and the bottom scroll bar are now combined. Use the scroll bar to swipe through articles in browse mode. The arrows next to the scroll bar that jump to the next or previous article have been removed."

Obviously I can't see what this looks like on an iPad until Apple approves the v25 Content Viewer. Fair enough.

However, the v25 Desktop Content Viewer doesn't seem to match the description above. Yes, the Home button at the top left of the nav bar has been changed to a Library button, but in all other respects, it looks and works exactly like the v24 Desktop Content Viewer: the Browse button is still there at the top right and it works like it always has done, letting you whizz back and forth across the folio, while the scrollbar at the bottom looks and works just as it always did, with its own single-page thumbnails, including the arrows on either side.

I am experimenting with a v25 folio.

Have I misunderstood the v25 release notes or does this mean that the v25 Desktop Content Viewer has a different UI to the forthcoming v25 iPad Content Viewer?

Sidecar ignored during folio upload (but accepted later)

That is, the articles get uploaded in the right order but settings such as smooth scrolling and horizontal swipe are wrong.

If I then move the sidecar.xml into its own folder and import it on its own, the folio gets updated with the correct metadata.

Why is this?
Export Format In PDF Articles - Vector as default

I would like to request that 'Vector' be made the default (or an option allowed for users to change the default) for 'Export Format in PDF Artciles' in Slideshows and Scrollable Frames.

In my line of work - newspaper and magazine publishing - roughly 99.9% of Slideshows and precisely 100% of Scrollable Frames contain text and therefore *must* be set to Vector otherwise our pages look pants on a Retina display. It is troublesome and needlessly expensive for us to be changing Raster content to Vector over and over and over again. And over and over. And over and over.

We're finding that big scrolls and MSOs might be set to Vector in our templates but, after a bit of chopping, changing and copy-pasting on live pages by designers, they revert to Raster. Can you imagine how infuriating it would be if you applied a custom Swatch to an object, only to have it keep reverting to Black? Well, this is what it's like with the Raster business.

Alistair

link to #anchor only works the second time

I am exploring a way of delivering a local HTML file into a Web Content frame in such a way that it starts at a specific HTML anchor rather than the top of the HTML page.

Now, since DPS's Web Content overlay does not support the URL+anchor string format (e.g. myfile.html#myanchor), I thought I might achieve the desired result by loading a little HTML file into the Web Content overlay that points to the intended HTML file and its named anchor in an <iframe> tag.

Here's where it gets annoying. The solution works... but only on the second and subsequent times you call up the Web Content overlay (normally hidden in a MSO).

The first time I call up the Web Content overlay in my DPS article on the iPad, however, the HTML page displays but not at the specificed anchor point, nor indeed at the top of the HTML page - instead, it seems to start a little bit further down from the anchor. If I dismiss the Web Content overlay (in my case, switch to a different Object State) and return to it, the HTML reloads starting at anchor position, exactly as intended. I can close the folio, re-open it and still the behaviour is correct. It was only the first time that it fails to do the right thing.

I am very happy that my solution works on the second, third and all subsequent occasions, but it's pretty important that readers see it working first time.

I have tried delaying the autoplay of the Web Content but this does not make any difference. The anchor is designated using the 'id' tag.

Any ideas?

Web content stopped working - could someone have a try?

Last week I created a little HTML file that shows an audio play button. When you tap it, it starts streaming 30 seconds of audio (from Amazon, yes I know, naughty, but it's just a proof of concept) and the button changes into a pause button. Repeatedly tapping the button has the effect of resuming playback or pausing until the audio clip has finished.

It works in Safari and Chrome. And last week, it was working on my folio pages (not Desktop Content Viewer) when put in a small web content frame and set to Auto Play. Now the audio playback has stopped working and I've no idea why. Would anyone like to have a go? The HTML and two buttons are here (only 7KB):

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1130319/blockheads.zip

Unzip it and try it in a web browser. Then try it on a DPS folio page on your iPad. If it works for you, then I've done something odd. If it doesn't work for you, perhaps it was only working for me last week in a dream.

Thanks!

This morning, no-one can download it: I am told it just sits at 'Waiting' status and doesn't do anything. I came in to work and am currently able to download it at ultra-slow, crawling speed. Other folios give me no problem at all.

Can anyone shed any light on why a perfectly working folio would become undownloadable during the course of the early hours of this morning in the UK? Unfortunately, the folio was for a board presentation and I am now Mr Unpopular. Fortunately, this still leaves me with a better reputation than DPS today.

Ali

Multi-rendition folios and 108ppi resolution

Experimentation with multi-rendition PDF folios is throwing out some interesting things. I am in a sharing mood.

- A standard iPad 2 folio rendition resamples images to 72ppi. An iPad 3 folio rendition resamples image to 144ppi. A multi-rendition folio resamples images to 108ppi. As a result, images in a multi-rendition folio look worse on an iPad 3 than those in an iPad 3-specific folio. Sure, if the original images are not very good, readers won't notice any difference, but for top-quality photography, the jaggies and jpegging noise are noticeably harsher.

- All raster MSOs in a multi-rendition folio will be resampled to 108ppi. If those MSOs contain text, that text will appear fuzzy/jaggy on an iPad 3 even without zooming in. MSOs must therefore be set to Vector format to preserve the text... but remember that any text incorporated into a raster graphic will still be resampled to 108ppi, then fuzzed up onthe fly to 144ppi on the iPad 3 screen. So if someone is supplying you with logotypes, for example, insist on vector illustration files.

Clearly, the 108ppi resolution of multi-rendition PDF folios is a compromise. I'd be a little happier with this resolution compromise if it was possible to adjust JPEG compression settings for the images.

Ali

Error During Download - Please resume your download later

This message started kicking off today in Adobe Content Viewer on the iPad and won't go away. We're trying to download a folio that's about 170MB. We've all been able to download it before: it's just today that it's playing up.

One suggestion is that the folio was originally uploaded from a Windows PC, and since Friday last week we've been editing and relinking articles from Macs, this is causing the problem. Personally, I can't see how this would make any difference at all.

The download always stops at the same place. I have removed the article at this point, but then the download stumbles at the following article. I then remove this article in turn, and the download continues for one more article before stumbling at the next. I have tried uploading the problem articles to new test folios, only to find I can't download these at all.

Sideloading is no problem: this works fine but is obviously quite slow and our HTMLResources are not being picked up.

Could anyone shed light on what's causing the problem, please?

Ali

When looking at the folder in Bridge, Finder or Windows Explorer, we can see just one of each image in there, but looking at the folder via Mini Bridge shows one or two of the images in duplicate.

It seems it doesn't matter which of the duplicates he drags on the page, either of them works fine. But it is cluttering up his Mini Bridge panel and he's worried that he might accidentally delete items by trying to get rid of the duplicates.

It only affects this one user. See the screenshot below:

Look closely at the headline and you'll notice that it seems to be duplicated on top of itself, as if there are two identical headlines on top of each other, a couple of pixels apart. This happening on ALL our HTML text story pages based on this template.

The page is HTML supported by local web fonts, an extremely basic CSS and a jQuery to handle the zoom function (the blue buttons at the top). The idea is that readers of our DPS folio tap on a button on a page to reveal a state in an MSO that contains a web view frame showing the full text version of a story.

The annoying thing is that the HTML looks absolutely fine in Safari and Chrome on my computer, nor in the desktop Content Viewer: the problem only arises in Safari and Chrome (and therefore DPS too) on the iPad 2 and 3.

Has anyone here experienced the same issue? Normally, ensuring identical MSO names and identical object state names within that MSO between landscape and portrait layouts meant that readers could rotate their iPads and keep the same object state on-screen. For some reason, this doesn't work any more: as soon as you rotate the iPad, the MSO resets back to its initial state. This is happening to all my MSOs in the R22 folio I'm about to release at the weekend.

Is there anything I should be doing to make it work how it used to? This feature was a bit of a selling point for DPS as no-one else could do it.

Ali

Any attempt to open it produces the message 'This file is already open by another user or application. This file may be stored on a network server and cannot be opened until the other user closes it.'

Indeed the file is on a network server but it's in the same folder as a bunch of other InDesign Library files that were in use at the same time as the troublesome file, but none of which cause us any problems. When we try to duplicate this one Library file or copy it to another location, we get the message (in Windows 7) 'File In Use. The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program. Close the file and try again.'

We've checked practically every computer with access to this network share - no-one has the Library open. So we got everyone to quit InDesign anyway. We got everyone to log out. We got everyone to restart their PCs. We got everyone to kill their InDesign Preferences. No joy.

Could anyone here shed any light on what's going on and what I can do to get at this naughty file?

Thanks,

Ali

Link from Web Content overlay to another article

Thinking caps on, guys. I am trying to reduce the overall size of a folio that contains a pop-out panel (a two-state MSO) that reveals image thumbnails in a vertical scrolling content frame. Each thumbnail is a button that takes the user to another article in the folio. The panel is repeated across all articles, which is handy for the user but wasteful in file size.

In theory, I ought to be able to reduce the file size of the pages containing these panels if I was to replace the vertical scrolling content frame with a tall Web Content frame that would point to an appropriately designed HTML doc in HTMLResources.zip. This would minimise repetition of all those thumbnails.

The problem, if you haven't already guessed it, is that DPS does not allow you to link from a Web Content overlay to folio articles. The 'navto://' convention simply won't work in this scenario.

Is there ANY way to jump a Web Content frame to other locations in the folio? How do I ensure continuity for users who have our apps installed in such a way that they don't lose their free and retail folio downloads?
Need to downgrade DPS - but to which version?

Lack of sleep is clouding my train of thought, so I'd be grateful if someone could help me with this question.

I was planning to release an updated version of my multi-issue app along with a new issue of my magazine that takes advantage of the latest DPS features. For reasons too boring to explain, my app-update plans have has fallen through, and now I am reworking all my pages to ensure they are supported by my existing app before the new issue goes live at the weekend.

Now I can't precisely remember which version of the DPS tools I was using when that existing app was created.

My last app update was in early September 2011, reporting a Bundle Version 1.9.0.5.26413. Please could someone remind me what version of DPS tools this is properly compatible with?

Thanks,

Ali

Sep 2011 issue of YOU INSPIRE out now

Despite last Friday's acrobat.com troubles, which pushed our press day from Friday to Saturday, the September 2011 issue of YOU INSPIRE (luxury fashion supplement to the UK's YOU magazine) went live, along with an updated version of its app, on Saturday night.

The app and magazine content are free, so please go ahead and have a look. The September issue is about 380MB - that's 100MB more than last issue - but I put this down to having even more full-screen photography from more fashion shoots, additional product pages, and no less than 14 embedded videos (9 editorial, 5 advertising).

With respect to the problems last Friday, when it proved near-impossible to use Folio Builder and completely impossible to download folios to Content Viewer on an iPad, I would like Adobe to look again at its external network performance for DPS pre-publishing via acrobat.com. As has been reported in another forum comment, green lights were showing for acrobat.com while DPS was inoperable to a whole bunch of us outside the US. Being told 'everything's fine here', or that there was a minor problem for 'a couple of hours', or that one of my articles was 'corrupted' and causing the problem, wasn't helpful when my colleagues and I found ourselves unable to use DPS for at least eight hours on Friday.

That said, the download performance of the published folio is fantasic at the moment, especially with the ability to start reading almost immediately after the download begins. I'm relieved but also very pleased at how it's turned out, and my appreciation goes to the various members of staff at Adobe in Europe who had to deal with my increasingly insistent expressions of concern through the course of Friday afternoon and evening.

Ali

Can't download content this morning

Has someone pulled out a plug they shouldn't have over at acrobat.com towers? I can't download my content to my iPad: either it says 'Waiting', or '0 of XXXMb' or 'Cannot download blah blah Try again later' and does nothing else.

I've signed out and in. I've restarted the Content Viewer app. I've deleted and re-installed the Content Viewer app. I've shut down and rebooted my iPad. I've checked that WiFi is running correctly here.

AND I've done all of those things in one go, too.

I'm now trying my last-ditch solution, which is to publish the folio as Private/Free (even though it's not ready for publishing). In the meantime, could someone at Adobe put that plug back in, please? We're in our final round of corrections and need to publish tomorrow, and I'd be grateful not to have to do all this at the eleventh hour on a Saturday.

Thanks.

Ali
