how do I update cc desktop when it won't update unless I quit the desktop app?

If there is an update to CC and my desktop app wants to update but won't because itself is open, and when I quit CC the retry installer doesn't do anything, AND I cannot download CC from the website b/c it tells me to use my desktop app...what do I do?
