Open VOX/uLaw files

It seems it should be possible to open VOX / uLaw files with Audition, You can save them to that format, after all.

When I try to import (8kHz uLaw Mono), the only fields that are active are the bit rate and the start byte offset. All other fields (Format, Encoding) are disabled, which is where you would need to make those changes.

How do I enable those items? How can I import these old files into Audition?

Anchored Frames Adrift

I am using TCS4 (FM11, RH10).

In FM, I add images (import by reference), set the anchored frame to "Run into paragraph" and have it right-justified. Looks good, and publishes to PDF fine.

RH imports it and ignores the anchored frame spacing. If the text is not deep enough to span the depth of the image, RH overlaps the image, preferring to manage spacing through the text. Pictures on top of pictures.

How can I tell RH to honor the anchors put into FM? Hopefully its a setting in RH, since there are a lot of pics and it would be a pain to have to modify all of them individually.

Text line or frame changes content on import

It's Magic!...or something.

I am using TCS 4 (FM11, RH10).

This is a screenshot from FM. It is a graphic (PNG) with a text line or text frame (I've tried both) over it. The text is "Duration".

After importing into RH, this is what it looks like.

What happened to the text? It took each letter in "Duration" and added 3 places to it: D becomes G (D ef G), u becomes x (u vw x), and so on.

WTF? (or ZWI in this case).

It also appears to have merged the text with the graphic into a single image in RH.

Can someone explain this? Has anyone seen it before? And how do I fix it? I mean, besides changing the word to "Aro^qflk" (which does work, btw).

Set (and keep) Table Margins

I have TCS4.

I am linking a Framemaker book into Robohelp so everything keeps up-to-date. Mostly, it works fine.

But..

How do I apply a margin to a table in the CSS so that it stays? I want to put some space between all tables and what is around them (text, other tables, etc.) just to clean things up and make it easier to read. Padding moves the text within a cell. I need to shift the table itself as a unit.

I can make the change manually in RH by adjusting the table properties of each table, but with hundreds of tables to setup each time there is an update, it gets terribly time consuming. Table margins seems to be entirely missing from the CSS or Master Page config.

Where is it hiding? Can I set a margin for all tables of a type collectively? And have it survive Forced Updates?

I even tried modifying the CSS file directly with mixed results. margin-top: 10.000px; and such.

Interactions in HTML5

I am using CP 6.

Is there any way to export a Captivate project to HTML5 so that it does not lose all of the interavtivity? I used Flash to build a UI and some control buttons which are SWF files. Works great in CP's standard SWF output, but converting to HTML5 just gives me a simple movie: Looks good, but none of the interactions work.

I am not a Java Script programmer, so CreateJS doesn't help me. Interactivity is part of HTML5, so I am surprised that the export from CP doesn't support this.

How do I get my buttons back without learning a new language? Is there a better conversion tool? Or am I just using it wrong?

User variables from Captivate 6

Using Flash Pro CS 6 and Captivate 6

I recently updated Captivate from 5/5.5 to 6. What used to work doesn't anymore.

I have user variables in Captivate that are pulled into Flash using AS3. These are then used to populate a Dynamic text field.

I created a simple test slide in Captivate, adding the flash animation. The AS3 code is:

var cappie:MovieClip = MovieClip (captivate.parent.root);

Biff.text = cappie.Botox;

Biff is the name of the Dynamic Text field on the flash stage.

Works flawlessly in 5.5, but not at all in 6.0.

Did Adobe break something in 6.0? Or did they change the code? Or could I do it another way?

FYI System variables are fine in 6.0. For example:

Biff.text = cappie.cpInfoCurrentSlideLabel;

I can read and change user variables through AS3, just not display them, it seems.

Does anyone have any insight? Thanks.

Cut and paste the wrong data

I have a problem with FM 10. Eventually, when I copy something and then paste, it pastes something else. Usually whatever was in the clipboard previously. Pasting into any other program works fine, but FM will not paste the correct object, and become fixated on the previously pasted item. When it happens, it happens whether I copy from within the doc, or from another program (Photoshop, Notepad, Word).

This happens with text or graphics.

I will work fine for hours, then it goes off the deep end and this happens. In order to make it work properly again, I have to close FM and restart it.

Has anybody seen this before? What is it and how do I stop it?

Choppy Transitions

I am using FM 11 on Win 7 Pro 64-bit.

Whenever I run a published project, the transitons between slides are choppy. Specifically, the transition starts, then the window blinks, then the transition completes. It does not matter which transition I use, even NONE does the same thing.

Strangely, if I jump to the next slide through a command (custom button, Flash UI) before the end of the slide, its runs smoothly. It is also fine if I have an interactive item on the screen that waits for user input before moving on.

Can anyone tell me why? Better yet, how to make it a smooth transition? Is there a file someplace that could be modified to control the transition?

Incorrect/No Table Sorting

I have a table with 3 columns. It had been sorted by the first column (CR Number). That works fine.

I am now attempting to sort by the third column instead. A portion of the result is shown below. It refuses to sort at all, either ascending or descending. I can still successfully sort by the first column. Why not this one?

Its not that it is sorting according to some odd rule, its not sorting at all by this column. I have turned off sorting by any other column but this.

R-Click on table - Sort = Row Sort - Ascending - Only the In Build column is chosen.

The entries are copied and pasted so there should not be any hidden typos or characters to cause this. I even remade some of the entries to be sure, but it still refuses to sort by this column.

Does anybody have any idea why?

Addendum - After further testing, it is clearly the data itself that FM has an issue with. Both other columns sort correctly, but this one does not sort at all.

Delete characters on save

I have a rare but recurring issue with Text Lines added to graphics (FM 10, Windows 7 64-bit).

Occasionally, when I add text lines (labels) to a linked graphic and click save, FM will delete seemingly random characters from the text. Its tough to catch unless you are expecting it, which you almost never are.

Has anyone else seen this? Might there be a fix?

User variables and Flash AS3

Black Background

Captivate 6 on Windows 7 64-bit.

I have added a SWF animation (from Flash CS6) to a master slide. The areas of the animation that should be blank/empty/transparent are black instead during editing, both in Master Slide view and in Filmstrip view.

When published, the background is the same colour as the stage (as it should be).

A black background makes editing difficult; text and other items just disappear.

Has anyone some experience with this, and how to fix it?

Jump to Slide by Label

Using Captivate 6, is there any way to jump to a slide using its label?

Using the numbe works OK, but if you add or delete slides, then the jump goes to the wrong spot.

The command will be sent from a Flash animation/button (UI) so any updates to the numbers will not reach that far: Captivate does update itself, but it doesn't tell anybody else what its up to.

I used (Cap 5.5) to use Widget Factory for this (gotoSlide) but that has stopped working with Captivate 6.

Change UI Font

I just upgraded from FM 3.5 to 4.0 and I find the new interface a little hard to read. Compared to 3.5, the 4.0 fonts on the tabs are smaller and all lower case. Coupled with a darker background and some sort of drop shadow (see pic) it makes the tabs hard to read.

Displaying as icons makes it a little better, but can the font be changed from someplace?

Can the gray background be lightened up?

Can we lose the drop shadow?

You get the same effect when there are multiple files open.

Book wide Conditional Build Tags

Jump to slide label

Is there a command, similar to cpCmndGotoSlide, that navigates using the slide label?

I am passing a goto command from Flash, and if the slide moves (I add or remove a slide), then the link to the slide number will be wrong.

Slide labels are forever.

Pushing Dynamic Text into a Button

How can I feed dynamic text into a button (Up, Over, Down)? Adding the dynamic text field is easy enough, but I cannot get it to accept the data. Feeding a Movie Clip works OK, but the button always keeps its default text.

Flash CS6 (pulling data from Captivate 5.5 if that matters).

It seems logical that, if the program lets me add dynamic text to a button, then it should be accessible. But how?

Passing Captivate Data

I am running Captivate 5.5 with Flash Pro CS 6.

I have a Captivate project with an embedded UI created with Flash. I want a text field (called Titled ) in Captivate to be accessed and displayed within the Flash UI. The text field will be different on each Cap slide, so the Flash UI should read it each time a new slide begins.

Reading on the net shows that Flash's Dynamic Text should do it, but there are no useable examples to draw upon for inspiration.

The Flash boards have not yet responded, so can anyone here help to inspire me? How do you pass field data from Captivate to Flash?

Events and Passing Variables

I have created a UI in Flash CS6, which is embedded as an animation into Captivate 5.5. There is a User Variable (Flag) created in Captivate which changes value at a certain point in the playback (no button clicks or user interaction involved). When the variable changes value (from 0 to 1), I want the embedded UI to react (make a button glow, have buttons appear, whatever).

I need help with the trigger. I need an evenlistener (I assume) to monitor the condition of the flag, and then jump to a new frame in Flash (to run whatever code) each time the flag value changes.

The current iteration of the code is:

gotoAndStop is Erratic

I am building a Flash (Pro CS6) interface for use in Captivate 5.5. It has a pause button which, when clicked, should stop playback, then jump to frame 10 where the play button appears. The play button, when clicked, should resume playback then jump to frame 1 where the pause button appears again.

Previewing in Flash (using F12), clicking on Pause does nothing; no jumping, and Play never appears.

If I change the MovieClip declaration to (root), the Pause/Play buttons cycle properly (but without issuing any commands to Captivate).

There are Replay and Restart buttons on the UI as well, which always seem to work.

When running the code in Captivate, the pause button works as intended. When clicking play, the playback resumes and it jumps to frame 1, but then proceeds to frame 10 again (instead of waiting for another click). The movie is still playing, but the play button is now in frame. Click it to return to frame 1 and the pause button where it waits (as it should). Repeat.

So, click Pause always works. On the first click, Play sends the Pause command to Captivate, jumps to but does not pause at frame 1, returning instead to frame 10. Click again to return to frame 1 where it now waits for another click.

If I change the MovieClip declaration to (root) then the Pause/Play buttons cycle properly, but without issuing any commands to Captivate.

Pasted Images Black

I have some embedded images in FrameMaker that I need to edit in Photoshop. I copy the image from FM and paste it as a new image into Photoshop. Most of the time its OK, but sometimes it comes up like this, or worse.

It should look like this.

Pasting the image into any other program (i.e. Word, Visio, Paintbrush) works, but it takes more time to fix it, the size is usually off and needs adjusting, and the output is of lower quality.

In FM, the images that seem to do this are JPEG / Frame Vector or PNG / Frame Vector according to the Facets field.

Does anyone have any idea why? More importantly, how can I fix it?

Linking to Framemaker

Hello all,

When I link to an FM doc, I can make changes (i.e. add image maps to pics, restructure the TOC) to the help file to make it more of a help file. Tweaks, and so forth.

However, the next time I update from FM, all the customization gets wiped and I must start again.

Is there any way to stop that from happening? Can RH be told to update only things that have changed? There is a box to "not update images", but will that preserve image maps?

If it does this all the time, there really does not seem to be much advantage to be gained by "linking" instead of "importing" a doc. Updating a linked file seems to use a brute force approach, forcing you to start from scratch, with no intelligence involved. Can there be?

TOC Generated in Wrong Order

Using FM 10 with a generated TOC. The first page of a chapter has 2 flows, "Chapter Title" and "Body Text". "Chapter Title" is above "Body Text". The 2 flows are not connected, as I don't want a large title to encroach on the text and mess up its formatting. So the title isn't connected to anything, but the body is connected to the next page.

TOC generated puts the chapter title last, beneath all other entries for that page. Subsequent pages are fine, until the next title page.

Based upon other posts, I have moved the title around the page (up & down), changed the flow names and the paragraph styles and it still puts the one flow's heading last on that page.

Both text flows are defined on the master page.

It seems that whatever is in the one flow will appear first regardless. How can I fix this? How do I get it to read the flows in the proper order?

Image File Names

Is there any way to tell RH to NOT rename image files when importing/linking to a FrameMaker document? It would help the poor image quality problem if I could copy the originals into the RH folders, replacing the severly downsampled images RH is using with the better quality ones, but renaming the originals is time consuming and annoying (particularly if RH changes the names).

Failing that, since most of the images in FM are linked, is there a way to have RH also link to those images instead of creating its own versions?

Moving a highlight box

I can create a highlight box, and set it to "Fill outer area."

Then I want to move the box using effects. Unfortunately, the backgound stays the same size, so that when it is moved, gaps appear where the background has shifted away from the edges of the slide.

How can I make the background of the highlight area continue to cover the entire slide throughout the move?

Speech to Text

I inherited an eLearning routine full of MP3 narration, but the original scripts are gone. I need to modify things but its tough without the text.

Suppress TOC in Aggregated Project

After banging my head against the CP5 wall for a while, I finally split my 157 page project into 2 halves and now each will publish without errors. I used Aggregator to glue them back together which worked fine, except for the annoying left hand pane which has suddenly appeared. I think its the TOC.

Can the TOC be suppressed in the aggregated project? It doesn't add anyting in this case and just gets in the way.

Rebuilding Broken Links

Having just split my project to work around limitations in CP5, and used aggregator to glue them together again, I need to rebuild the broken links to reconnect both halves. Is there any way to find all the broken bits so I know what to rebuild, or am I stuck going through the original page-by-page to find them all and rebuild them? RoboHelp has a utility that finds them all for you, and FrameMaker tells you when it cannot find a linked object.

Having said that, how can you rebuild the links once you find them? Jump to slide type functionality would be ideal, but the jump command only lists the slides in the current project, not the aggregated one.

Clean up a Project

Is there any way to clean up a project file?

I have a 157 page routine that is 89MB in size, and its causing all kinds of problems trying to publish (I've looked over the other threads and haven't got it working from any of them). As a test, I deleted all of the pages in the project, added a new one (blank) since the project needs at least one, cleaned out the library and saved. Its now down to 82MB (and it still fails to publish). That's a lot of file for an empty project. This tells me that there is a lot of junk/overhead/rubbish in this project that needs to go.

Is there any way to take out the trash? Is there a routine that dumps the unused crap? Is there a file that can be deleted? I have cleaned out the cache and removed the preferences folder. A utility that can be downloaded, perhaps? I have worked with programs that don't delete things when you delete them, it just hides them until you hit the magic button that flushes everything out. Where's the magic button?

Copy and paste into a new project didn't work (not everything got copied, nevermind the links being broken), and this is starting to eat up more of my time than I can afford.

Change format throughout a book

How can you change a paragraph or charater style throughout a book?

For example, if I have a paragraph style that is Green Times New Roman and I decide it should be Blue Courier instead, how can I change it in all 30 chapters at once without manually changing all 30 chapters of the book?

RoboHelp Claws back Focus

When I generate the help file, or do anything that makes RH think for a bit, it always seem to want to recover focus if I move away to do something else while its busy. If I switch to Word, or IE, or RD to another machine, it pulls me back so I can watch the progress bar. It may eventually give up, but its pretty aggressive about it.

It might be wishful thinking on my part, but is there some way to make RH let me continue working while its thinking? To stop it from clawing back the focus?

Default File Locations

How can you change the default locations for the working files for FM? RoboHelp keeps crashing when I try importing files to it, and that leaves bits of FM behind. My C drive is short on space so I'd like to redirect the temp files to another drive to keep from gumming up the works.

Maker.ini doesn't seem to set the path, although there could be a section I can add that would do the trick. Syntax anybody?

Same question for RH but I will post that elsewhere.

Second Text Frame Over the First

I have a doc that, for some reason, has a new text frame layered on top of the first one. Typing goes into the new frame and I cannot edit the original text. I can delete the new frame to get at the real text, but it has happened on all pages of the doc.

My question is, where did it come from? I did not add it, and it wasn't there a month ago. I did rename the flow, and the new frame is called flow A which is the default and which should not exist anymore.

What gives?

Linking/Importing from FM and the pics are awful

I am using the TS3 suite with FM 10 and RH 9.

In FM, the pics (mostly embedded with no original picture file still present) look fine, and the generated PDF or printed docs look fine.

Importing or Linking into RH and all the pics are rubbish. Much too low res to be of any help, and scaling them up just makes it a bigger mess. Going to File>Project Settings>Import and selecting the Edit button under FM Document, go to Images: I have changed the default format a few times, adjusted scaling, width and height, with and without Do Not Regenerate and Use Distiller and still I get only rubbish.

Is there a setting someplace to bring the images across at a useable resolution? Recreating all the images is not a viable option.

Object properties in FM shows most to be DIB/Frame Image, or Frame Vector/PNG.

I think this may be a bug, but I thought I would run it past everyone to see if there is anything I've missed.

I have the Tech Comm Suite 3 (FM 10, RH 9).

Create file in FM, close. Open RH, create new and link to the FM doc.

RH opens FM and creates a lock (LCK) file for the FM doc. The doc doesn't open (visibly), just FM. I fiddle in RH and save. Close project. Close RH.

FM does not close. It must be closed manually. Close FM.

The lock file does not, ever, get removed. It must be removed manually. If I don't do the clean up, the next time I update or generate in RH, FM loads, crashes, loads copy 2 and crashes, loads copy 3 and crashes... This eventually locks up the system as none of the crashed versions goes away. It requires a reboot to clear.

The bug would be with the lock file, it should go away, shouldn't it?

FM should also close when RH closes.

[The rest is a stability/memory leak issue that will be harder to trace and should be the topic of another thread.]

Comments before I post it as a bug.

RoboHelp Page Break Markers

In my FM doc, I insert an RH page break marker and enter the title and filename as requested (i.e. "Topic Title" and "Filename").

From RH I import the FM file and see from the Topic List that it has reversed the filename and title fields ("Filename" and "Topic_Title.htm"). Then when I generate the help file, what was supposed to be the title is now the filename ("Topic_Title.htm").

This seems to me to be so simple that I must be missing something. Is this a bug or am I losing my marbles?

Accessing System Variables

How do I access System Variables? Specifically, I want to add a year and month seperately but those variables are not listed in the Variables pod (a bunch of other things are, long dates and so on).

I can add them as User Variables, setting them up as <$year> and <$monthname>, but that doesn't work either (the output is "<$year" and "<$monthname" respectively).

I can import the variables from another document, but I shouldn't have to. They have got to be in there someplace, but where? How can I get to them without importing a bunch of duplicate variables from other docs?

Auto Spell Check isn't working

I am using FM 10 and in some documents the auto spell check function isn't working. There may be many chapters within a book, some work and some don't.

I have checked File>Preferences>General and the function is on, it just does not appear to work.

I can deliberately misspell a word and then force it to check the page, document or book and it still doesn't find my error ("mefnu" should be caught, I would think).

Is there some secret switch you need to throw to turn it on, even though it appears to already be on? What is missing from this equation?

P.S. Oddly, I have found that FM is auto checking Heading, but not Body Text.
