How to change photo size settings on cell phones and tablets

I've worked in graphic design for many years, but I just encountered a new situation for me.

In the past, whenever I got photos from a digital camera or even a cell phone, the default pixel settings were more than sufficient to work with. For example, the default pixel settings on my digital camera are 4608x3456.

But in this situation, I'm getting photos from technicians who know nothing of computer graphics. I need to crop their photos to 640x480. But some of them are coming in smaller than that (one is 234x420).

I believe they are taking these photos with their cell phones or their tablets (but they could be using different brands).

So I've been asked to instruct them in how to take their photos so they come out big enough for us to crop to the appropriate size.

But I always thought that the defaults for all devices that take photos are pretty huge, like my own digital camera. I don't understand why any would come in so small, unless the techs tried to edit the photo themselves before sending it to us.

So is there a way to change the photo settings on smart phones and tablets? If so, is it pretty similar for different brands, or will I have to research and give instructions for every brand they have?

Or, do you agree that they might be trying to edit their photos themselves before sending them?

How to get roto brush back

I've been following a tutorial in using the Roto Brush to blur a TV screen in a video. After selecting the areas I wanted with the roto brush, I ran a gaussian blur effect.

The tutorial had me create a duplicate layer and delete the roto brush effect from that duplicate.

When I previewed what I had done, the effect wasn't blurred enough in parts, so I figured I had to go back and refine the roto brush selection.

So I used Edit>History to step back to before just before I created the duplicate layer, but after I created the roto brush selections.

Except now I don't see the areas I selected with the roto brush tool outlined as they were, even when I've selected the roto brush tool.

Am I missing something? Can I get my roto brush selections back, or do I have to do it all over again?

How to remove a gap between clips

I have all my clips loaded into my timeline.

While reviewing the final project, I noticed the screen goes dark briefly between 2 clips near the beginning.

I zoomed in and it looks like when I originally loaded the second clip, it didn't snap-to the previous clip, leaving a blank space between them.

I thought I could ripple delete the blank gap, which I would prefer, because there are a lot of clips before and after the gap in the sequence and I don't want to have to manually move them all and risk creating new gaps. But ripple delete is always grayed out in the Edit menu.

So I thought maybe something has to be there to delete, so I created a color matte to put in there, but ripple delete is still grayed out.

I tried to Google an answer, but I only found methods for ripple deleting multiple gaps (that's where I got the idea of using a color matte), or deleting gaps in conversation from a video clip (as opposed to blank gaps in the timeline).

What am I doing wrong?

The video was for Photoshop CS6 which is what I have (version 13.1.2) and it said it's supposed to be under the File menu, but my version of Photoshop doesn't seem to have that option under the file menu, just the usual Save for Web option. There is something called Image Processor in the Scripts sub-menu, is that the same thing? Or am I missing something?

I think it was originally created in Word, but they don't seem to have that document any more.

I tried opening it with Acrobat and re-saving it in Word format, but that seemed to run character recognition on it and that resulted in some weird, unexpected changes to some parts of the text throughout the document.

So I thought it might be safer and easier to bring the pages of the PDF into InDesign as graphics and just draw white boxes over the parts that need to change.

But 8 preflight errors show up, claiming there are missing fonts (Arial and Times New Roman). The original document was probably created on a PC and my Creative Suite is on a Mac.

So is it safe to ignore these errors?
How to remove page breaks in converted document

This is probably more a Microsoft Word problem, but it started out as an InDesign document, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to post the question here in case someone else has encountered a similar problem.

I formatted an epub on Amazon for my job. Since I am more familiar with InDesign, I used it along with Amazon's script to turn it into an epub.

Since then, I've noticed the cover has inexplicably rotated 90 degrees on Amazon. I asked about it in Amazon's forums, and they said InDesign isn't really reliable for epubs.

So I'm trying to recreate everything in Word. The original Word document isn't up to date with all the editing and corrections I did, so I exported each InDesign chapter document into a PDF, then used Adobe Acrobat to save each PDF as a Word document.

Some of the resulting Word documents seem to be littered with multiple page breaks and/or section breaks. I'm able to delete most of them, but some of them fall right in the middle of a sentence and won't delete. I've selected the paragraph icon in the ribbon to turn on invisible characters, and I can't see a page or section break indicated in most of these breaks.

Anyone know what might be causing these and how to delete them?

Maybe I should just copy everything from my InDesign documents and paste them into Word instead?

Results from PDF2DTP have me stumped

Once translated, everything in the tables (both text and boxes) act like they are grouped together. But when I go to Object>Ungroup, it's grayed out.

So then I thought, maybe it translated it to an InDesign table. I don't have much experience with tables in InDesign, so I'm pretty ignorant about how to edit them, but I checked the Table menu, and convert text to table and convert table to text were both grayed out.

Any thoughts about what this might be and how to break it apart so I can edit the text and boxes separately?

Maybe its made up of text boxes and picture boxes embedded in a bigger text box? Is there an easy way of breaking something like that apart?

How to do an interactive form with tables

I've been asked to recreate an interactive form that was created using several tables. The tables are made up of cells that contain labels of what information is required, followed by blank cells where the user can put the information (text fields). A few of the cells are to contain drop down menus that will contain a list of answers to choose from (combo boxes). I kind of like the idea of doing it in a table just because it keeps everything lined up automatically.

I am a Lynda.com subscriber, and I found a course on that site that shows how to create interactive forms with InDesign, but it just breezes past doing it with tables. It says you can do it, but doesn't show how. The problem is, one table can contain all three types of cells that I plan to use. I can select the whole table and then choose "Type" in the Buttons and Forms panel, but I would think that would turn the whole table into just one type of field. I can't seem to figure out how to select individual cells of the table to choose different types.

Is there a way to do that?

Clarification of print vs. interactive PDFs from InDesign

I'm in the process of converting a pile of InDesign documents to PDFs.

While exporting the latest one, I noticed it was set to export to an interactive PDF rather than print which is what I intended.

These documents don't have and won't need any interactive elements.

I'm not sure how that happened, but now I'm wondering how many previous exports went to interactive without my knowing it.

So that leaves me with a couple of questions:

1. Could it screw anything up if you use an interactive PDF for print when the original documents have no interactive elements?

2. If it could screw anything up, is there any way for me to tell which documents are interactive so I'll only have to re-export those?

Thanks!

Is it advisable to create a document in Indesign, export to PDF, then export to Word?

I've been asked to create several documents in Word format because the people who would be using them won't have access to InDesign or Acrobat Pro to edit and change them as needed.

Since Word is so quirky IMO and I don't know it as well as InDesign, I'd like to avoid creating the documents directly in it if at all possible.

My concern is that translating from ID to PDF, and then again to Word might create some strange anomalies in the resulting document, like maybe incorrect dingbat characters or maybe even non-printing characters, or items falling into Word's header or footer no-man's land incorrectly. I wonder if it might end up being just as time consuming?

Has anyone else tried this workflow?
Bleed question

It's a full page and and they list their full bleed size as 8.25" x 11.25". Then they say the bleed should be .25" on all 4 sides. Final trim size is 7.75"x10.75". The live area is 7"x10" within the trim area. So I set up the InDesign document page size as 8.25"x11.25" with a .25" bleed all around then I set the margin to be .375" all around (half of .75"). Then I created a picture box at the document size of 8.25"x11.25" and filled it with the ad which is in PDF format to which I added logos and our address and phone number. But when I exported it to PDF with crop marks, the crop marks were outside the document area. Should I have made the document size equal to the live area (7x10) instead of the full bleed size?

My form came back blank

I originally posted this in Acrobat> Creating and Exporting PDFs, but someone who responded suggested I post this problem here as well.

So I've copied the entire discussion, including the responses I received so far (I've made the responses bold) in hopes that someone here can help me figure out how to get this to work.

I created a questionnaire on my Mac in InDesign CS6 and exported it into an interactive PDF. Then, in Acrobat X, I went to Tools and clicked the Create button to use the current document to automatically recognize all my fields (and it worked on all of them). Then I saved it, but when I tried to "Save as Reader Extended PDF", all of the options were grayed out. So I just selected "Save as Reader Extended PDF" without selecting one of the grayed out options. Then I tested it on my Acrobat Reader on my PC, and there was the purple band at the top telling me I could save data typed into the form. I tried it out and saved it and it seemed to work; it saved everything I typed in. So I emailed the blank form to the people who needed to get it, telling them to fill out the form, save it, and email it back to me. The first person sent it back, but it's blank. Does it sound like I did anything wrong, or skipped a step? Or does it sound like the person I sent it to did something wrong on her end? Maybe she sent me the original version of the form rather than the new version with her answers? Please let me know if you spot something I missed. If that is the case, I need to hurry and correct it and then re-send it to everyone again. Thanks very much.

Make sure they're using Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) to fill in the file and not any other application (especially Apple's Preview).

She told me she did use "Adobe" (I think she must have meant Acrobat, because I doubt she has any other Adobe software). And she's on a PC, so it couldn't be Apple's Preview. She just told me that when she filled out the form, it took her to some website and she had to sign up for something. I didn't realize that would happen. It didn't happen to me on my end when I tested it, but I guess that's because I'm already an Adobe Cloud subscriber. So I guess the email that sent the form to me came from Adobe and not directly from her. I checked her email again and it mentioned something called "EchoSign". Is that a free service from Adobe? There is another copy of the form on EchoSign, but it too is blank.

It sounds like you added a signature field. That may be part of the issue. In any case, you might get a better answer in the forms topic area. Several of the folks who are good at forms stop by here and you may get a response here if you wait a bit. If you can post a copy of the form some place, it might help folks provide you the help you need.

Thanks, I'll try posting in the forms area as well. I'll also try posting the form below. I definitely didn't intend to add a signature field. Is it possible to do that accidentally? I also added a date field and a time field where I specified what the format should be (dd/mm/yyyy and 00:00). Could either of those caused a problem?

It does sound like she used the EchoSign functionality in Reader. This should not happen if the form was enabled for saving in Reader, unless she took the additional step of selecting File; Save a Copy, which unfortunately it will tell a user to do when they attempt to add text with the EchoSign tools. You may need to instruct her on how to fill-in the form and save it.

That was the weird thing; when I went to Save Reader Enabled, all of the choices in the sub-menu were grayed out. I just released the mouse on Save Reader Enabled without selecting any of the grayed out sub-menu selections and hoped for the best. When I tested the resulting form in Reader, I did get the purple bar at the top that said I could save it from Reader. So I thought it worked, but maybe it didn't. What could cause the Save Reader Enabled sub-menu to be grayed out?

Missing fonts in PDF placed in InDesign

I was sent a PDF to make slight changes to it. Since the changes were so minor and relatively few, I thought it would be easiest to just place the pages of the PDF into an InDesign document and put white boxes over what needs to change.

I just noticed the Preflight panel says I'm missing Arial and Times New Roman which I know I have. I tried doing "Find Font" to replace the missing Arial with my Arial, but "Change" is grayed out so I'm thinking the fonts must not be properly embedded in the PDF.

I'm not sure if they have the original document the PDF came from (and if they do, it might be in Word). Is there a way I can fix this either in InDesign or with Acrobat?

Or, if I don't fix it, do you think that the missing fonts will not print properly?

InDesign keeps telling me it can't find some of my fonts

When I check Font Book, the font is open, active, and it validates; also, Font Book didn't find any duplicates.

I Googled the problem, and one suggestion I found was to make an alias of my Font Folder and place that alias in InDesign's own font folder. I tried that, and it didn't seem to help.

One of the problem fonts is Arial Black, which I thought would be pretty basic and not cause problems.

Others are free fonts I found on the internet. I thought maybe InDesign had a way of checking to see if the fonts are legal, so I double checked their licenses, and they do seem to be free. (They are called Aldo the Apache and Alpha Quadrant).

Is there a way to make these fonts work or should I just trash them if they are useless anyway?

If I save an Illustrator file as PDF, isn't it still vector?

It separates my main content from the sidebar.

I just got to a page where the main content runs deeper than my sidebar, so the short dividing line looks odd.

I first tried to get around this by pinning it, but that made the line overlap the header and footer in some situations.

So I thought, maybe the only way around this is to make the master page as deep as this page with more content. I thought this would force all pages to be the same depth as the longer page, but it didn't. All other shorter pages remain short and the dividing line runs into the footer on them.

Do I have to manually re-size all pages to be the depth of the longer page since the master page couldn't do it? Somehow, I doubt that would work since HTML ignores empty space.

Is there any way around this, or do I just need to live with the shorter line on the longer page?

Thanks.

I don't want that.

I looked at the transparency panel for the whole logo as a group as well as the individual parts of the logo with the direct selection tool, and everything appears to be 100% transparency.

I did the same with the gray curve; it's also 100%.

The logo had a lot of masks that were hiding a lot of other logo elements that were not being used in this logo. I deleted those masks and deleted the stuff that they were hiding and were not being used. But could that have messed up the transparency?

How can I find where this transparency is coming from and get rid of it?

Thanks.

Does anyone know any tips for editing video to display on an LED digital billboard?

I was just given a MOV file of a TV commercial they want to display on a digital billboard. It needs to be converted to AVI format.

They said when they tried to translate it to AVI, it looked terrible and they couldn't tell what it was.

They thought I might have better luck since I have Premiere Pro.

I'm a beginner with Premiere anyway, but I also have no experience with digital billboards. I have no idea what settings I should use or anything.

I think it's going to look pixelated anyway, just because that's what LED signs do. Also, the TV commercial is a night scene around a campfire, so that doesn't help.

I asked what company made the sign and they told me ICE and the software used for it is called IView, but I haven't been able to Google anything helpful from ICE so far.

So any tips, tricks or suggestions from anyone who might have previous experience with this kind of thing would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

It was going fine until the table of contents.

I formatted each chapter in a different ID document in the book panel, then created a TOC style using my Chapter_Title paragraph style.
