Output Sharpening for Projection

Wonder if any of youy would like to weigh in on this.

In our Camera Club, we solicit images with a maximum resolution of 2560x2560 px - which provides for up to roughly 8" of printed reproduction @300dpi. For competition judging, we downsample the images to within 1280x1024 (noting that 1280 ix 1/2 of 2560) because that fits reasonably on our projectors which have a native resolution of 1440x1050. There are a bunch of reasons we settled on 1280x1024 for judging and I think we'll stick with that until larger resolution projectors become affordable for non-profits.

Nonetheless, we have to go through a downsample and re-sharpen to go from the 2560x2560 submission to the 1280 x whatever-up-to-1024 for projection. We've sort of settled on exporting via Lightroom at 1280x1024 Width and Height (which handles the constraints), JPG, Quality 100% sRGB and setting the output sharpening to Glossy-Normal (as opposed to Screen because we thought projection might need a little bit more).

Unfortunately we don't, and likely won't, have any control over whether the maker has already sharpened the 2560 image and so the possibility of double-sharpening is there (and probably is).

Anbody have thoughts on the output sharpening parameters or whether Lightroom ought to have an additional output option, e.g. Sharpen For Matte, Glossy, Screen, Projection ?

jc

Printing to an Epson 7900 under Mavericks

Anyone experienced problems printing to an Epson 7900 under Mavericks OS X 10.9 ?

According to Epson I have the latest drivers installed for the 7900, V9.04

I have 2 MACS - a MacBookPro running under Mountain Lion and I've updated my MacBook Air to run 10.9.

No problems printing the same file from the MacBookPro.

On the MacAir, I certainly see the printer; can send a file to it - but it prints and is terribly garbled. I see supply levels on the MacAir too.

But the interaction with the Driver is strange - it keeps reverting back to my HP 2100, Updating the settings in the printing Presets doesn't stick, etc.

the print is an almost total mess - it's the right size and you can see the image and some parts are fine - but the rest of it looks like it's done with drastic motion blur (so that looks like the driver is scrambling something).

If nobody else has seen this, then I will start by deleting the driver; re-installing it all and so forth - but just interested to see if anybody else out there has had trouble with it.

jc

Locking the default options for IMPORT

Could we have a more definitive way to establish personal defaults for IMPORT.

When I import from my camera card, I normally start in the Folder sub-panel of Library and do a right-click "Create a new folder inside ..." and then after that is completed I select the folder just created and right click again and "Import to this folder ..."

This brings up IMPORT with my destination already visually established AND the folder already created within my folder structure and then all I need to do is quickly verify my options and click IMPORT in the lower right corner.

But for the life of me, I couldn't get my options to be sticky ... e.g. preview resolution, destination, etc. I'd set them, do the IMPORT as above, finish it and when I'd go back in they wouldn't have been left the way I set them. But I knew that sometimes this DID happen.

Turns out that if you invoke IMPORT via the button in the lower left corner of Library and complete the sequence (rather than import to this folder via a right-click) ... then options set from that initiation point are sticky and are rembered the next time you go in.

My question is: could we not have a more specific way of saving the defaults on the screen so no matter how you entered IMPORT, you can establish your default and 'lock' it.

jc

How to Set Lens Profiles on a tone mapped HDR

This is really a question affecting my MAC Air, which only has 900 pixels height.

I have solo mode turned on so only one Develop Module Section (e.g. Basic, Tone Curve, HSL ... etc) is expanded by the disclosure triangle at a time. However, when I want to switch from, say Basic to Detail, (which is further down the screen), I have to move the mouse/trackpad over to the right, scroll down, position and then open the disclosure for Details. when done Sharpening, must do a similar procedure to move back to Basic to touchup the Clarity.

What I'd like to know is if there are some shortcut keys (OMG we need more !!!!!), that would allow you to switch to different Sections within the Develop module. In this case, THESE would be worth remembering..... I know about K, and R, Q and M ... etc but those just get you to the brushes/grads/and cropping

Anybody got any ideas on this ?

Catalog Conversion

This is a comment regarding the engineering of the conversion from level 2 to level 3 catalogs.

It perhaps comes about because we didn't get to test this on the BETA, since it couldn't convert catalogs.

It's a human as well as a technical issue.

If you have a catalog called Blue, then you have a folder called Blue and inside it is the file Blue.lrcat file as well as the Previews.lrdata

When you convert it, the standard is to create a new set of folders inside Blue and the previews get moved.

The LR level 3 conversion (the new files) gets appended with "-2" so it becomes Blue-2.lrcat inside Blue.

For novices this can be very confusing ... and as a tech guy in our local camera club of some 154 people I'm seeing a lot of confusion.

It might have been more reasonable to make the new version not with -2 (the copy number) but perhaps something that indicates it is clearly the converted LR 3 level file....maybe -3, but perhaps something more explicit....like -[LR3].

Also, the conversion and old sit side-by-side under Blue. It takes an experienced user in Win or MAC to start deleting the older versions. Perhaps instead of burying the conversion under Blue, another folder at the same level as Blue could have been created ... ie

Blue

Blue[LR3]

so it would not have been confusing.

In the current engineering, you would not want to advise somebody to delete the Blue folder (after conversion) since it encompases both the old and new versions of the catalog.

While all this might seem straightforward to people experienced in the using of Explorer or Finder...it's not straightforward to most people. They don't, for example, get that all their previews have moved. Nor do they understand what's safe to delete and what's not safe. And the -2 append is REALLY confusing since that is the level 3 version. The same -2 situation existed in upgrading from 1.x to 2.x - but then who knew the -2 was a copy number and not the level number...it's the "2" thing.

Sorry if this rambled .... but maybe some simple changes could be made as LR3 matures.

1. Do not create the newest version with -2 ... rename withsome less ambiguous

2. Be much more careful in providing choices where a person can place the converted files-and do not nest them inside the original LR 2.x folders

Once a conversion is made from 2.x to 3.0, it's a one-way process. From my understanding there is no [simple] way to go back. At least not that any novice Win/Find user could do on his/her own....so make the forward process a bit more transparent and bulletproof.

jc

LR cannot Import - Unknown Error

I am getting this error message when trying to import a catalog "Lightroom could not import because of Unknown Error".

The catalog I am attempting to import contains about 6000 images and was built by the beta during the Beta phase. It opens fine by itself - as it worked throughout the beta. I have no problems opening it and working on it directly with LR3.0.

However, since this was my catalog for just a couple of projects during the Beta, I now want to fold it into my main catalog of some 19,000 images. My main catalog was my LR2.7 catalog and I have successfully converted it to LR3.0 - it opens fine and works fine.

Said in another way, while running 3.0, I can switch freely back-and-forth between these 2 catalogs using File | Open Recent

I am just unable to import the beta's converted catalog into it. After doing File | Import from Catalog, LR asks for the name - I navigate to the xxx.lrcat file and select it. The import starts and displays a Preparing to Import information window...perhaps for a second or two, then stops with the above message which is reported as a Warning .... however, the import stops at this point.

So, this is kind of serious......

Both catalogs are on the same drive, with plenty of free space.

What additional information do you require to resolve this ?

jc

I don't know why (perhaps I didn't pause long enough..); then I have multiple Paul Simon variations in the list. The stray ones get outside the People category so I have to hunt for them, track them down and add Paul Simon to those images and delete the casing-variations to clean things up. Afterwards, for a while, the pull down list seems to work until a variation creeps in again.

This is frustrating and time consuming.

I suppose one answer would be to have an option in LR to consider all casing alternatives equivalent. Anybody know if that's burried in an option somewhere ??

Alternatively, I could convert all my mixed case entries to lowercase and I suppose that would fix it going forward, aesthetics aside.

Does anybody know of a way to do this en masse ? ie: batch the database (cringe) Yes, I can do it one at a time .... but life is short ....

thanks, jc

LR Keyword Case

I can click to select Jason or press the right arrow to move ahead in the line and either hit {enter} at this point to post the entry or do a {comma} and add more.

However, I am getting really inconsistent treatment from this. Often it will create a new keyword, "jason" (all lower case) and outside the hierarchy. Then I have to go back and point-click to the real "Jason" and delete the un-wanted "jason" keyword.

Then, for a while, "jason" appears in the drop-down box despite having deleted it from the keyword list. I 'think' this is time-dependent because I don't observe this consistently, either, and I think it disappears after a while.

Occasionally it will get it right (that is posting "Jason" to the photo) - but I haven't found the pattern to do that consistently (from a much longer list of names than in this example).

So, are there some ways around this ?

I have a number of family photos, from a long list of people's names, I am trying to keyword and scrolling up and down the keyword list to point-click is tedious, as well.

The creation of phantom all-lc entries, when you actually select from the drop down is infuriating. Bug or bug-feature ?

jc
