How to supress creation of book layer in WebHelp output?

Hi.

In a FrameMaker book, I have several chapters. When I publish to WebHelp, what I want to see is just each chapter turned in to its own topic. But FrameMaker does is put each topic in its dedicated book (see graphic below). What I'd like to see is one book (5.7 ReleaseNotes) and chapter-based topics beneath it. In short, I'd like to remove the intermediate book layer.

If there's a way to configure this, please advise as to how to do it. It's not clear how to do this from the settings.

Is there a way to make tab groups be remembered between RH sessions?

All-

I've found that the tab groups (in my case "vertical" tab groups) that I set in a RH project/session aren't being remembered. When I close and reopen a project, I have to reset my tab groups. Is there a way to make tab groups re-appear according to how they were last configured?

(I could be wrong, but it seems to me I've only had this problem recently. Perhaps I unchecked a "remember' setting?!)

2. I applied the style to an image. As expected, in the WSIWYG editor, the image is intented 1.75in":

The code (for this simple page, which happens to be a master page, but I find the issue on regular pages too) looks like this:

3. HOWEVER, in preview mode, and in the WebHelp output, the graphic is flat against the right edge:

Is something being overwritten somewhere? Or, perhaps I don't understand what a "class" is?

Any way to link link between merged projects on RH Server?

Hi. Me again.

Is there any way to maintain links between pages of different merged projects in RH Server?

To clarify, consider the crude sample presentation of a projects merged in RH Server. Say that the author(s) of the projects have an agreement that project names (eg, "Second project output") and the first topic ("Welcome") will have static names. Is there a way to, for example, create a link in the Welcome page of the First project output which opens the Welcome page of the Second project output? If so, please suggest the correct syntax.

Note: I found that right click on a navigation item, copy the link, then paste the link the browser address line, then the project that contains the link opens up outside the context of the merged environment. Only the project's own navigation is shown.

Are client access licenses (CALs) required for a RH Server deployment with SQL Server?

All- Does one have to purchase CALs in order to use a RH Server deployment with SQL Server. My IT guy seems to think that if we expect, say, a maximum of 20 users hitting our site at once, then 40 CALs would be required to support this.

So is it true that CALs are require in all SQL Server supported cases, and that the CAL count varies with expected concurrent users?

Continued tests of the RH Server seems to show that when someone (say, a customer who's interested in accessing content) attempts to access a protected site, they are presented with the standard RHS Admin login screen:

I'm interested to know:

If this is in fact the default screen a customer (content consumer) would see, and
If there's a way to customize this image.

How to view area-specific projects in merged Help?

Hi-

While I have been successful in getting RH Server to merge the projects shown below:

...and access the merged projects in this landing page...

http://localhost:8080/robohelp/server

... I can't seem to access one of the individual projects, such as Minerva API HTML Documentation.

The HR Server docs say:

You can access area-specific projects using the following URL:

http://<server-name>/robohelp/server?prj=<project-name>&area=<area-name>

What I think this means is that I should be able to browse to Minerva API HTML Documentation like this:

http://localhost:8080/robohelp/server?prj="Minerva API HTML Documentation"&area=general

However, when I try this, the merged project opens up (as though I were browsing to the first red URL above).

Please advise as to what I might be doing wrong.

SQL Server Express causing log in difficulties....

All-

Well, I'm not out of the woods yet. I've discovered that my issues of logging in to RHS Config Manager (admin/admin, but then nothing happens when I click Sign-In) returns when I select SQL Server Express. This despite the fact that the Config Mgr's Test Connection function shows success (see graphic below). Any ideas what might be going on?

BTW, is there any source which shows screen shots of EXACTLY how SQL Server Express, Tomcat, and RH Server needs to be set up? I see that others in the forum have had similar frustration with this question.

Am I trying to add users to a group correctly?!

Experts (Dave?!):

As posted yesterday, I'm finally able to log in to the RHS Admin Console.

I've been testing the Users areas. I'm having trouble adding users to a group other than the RobAdmin. Please let me know what/if I'm doing wrong. My procedure:

1) Access the Users panel:

2) Click the upper Add to add new group writers:

3) Click OK. The writers group appears in the Group pulldown:

4) Type in new user Kurt:

5) Click Add. Note how the selected group snaps back to RobAdmin!

6) Click Yes to confirm the user addition:

7) Observe how Kurt is now added to the RoboAdmin group. (D'oh!).

8) Observer how Kurt is NOT added to the writers group. (D'oh d'oh!)

Is the above the expected behavior? If so, how does one add users to a non-RobAdmin group?!?!?

RH Server 9's Web Admin "Sign In" button is doing nothing...

Hi all. I'm just now experimenting with a trial copy of RH Server 9.

ISSUE: When I attempt to log in to the Web Administrator (pictured below) with admin/admin for ID/pwd, nothing happens when I click the Sign In button.

Notes:

My IT guy says that this is likely an Apache-side issue, since 3 different browsers are showing the same behavior. He's not sure how to fix the issue though.
I'm running RH Server on a Win 7 VM on my Win 7 laptop.
The VM system has Tomcat 6.0.41 installed.

Any thoughts on what might be going on would be greatly appreciated.

If RH Server's database goes down, does RH Server go down also?

Hi experts. I've a couple RH Server questions:

Supposing RH Server's database fails, or at least it's connection to the database fails. What would be the consequences. That is, would RH Server crash and not serve up anything. Or, would it simply be that reports are no longer accessible, etc.
Has anyone used RH Server (installed on a Win 7 system) connected to a SQL Server Express instance (installed on another Win 7 system to spread CPU load).

My IT Manager is very leery of the free database option (for performance/reliability reasons), but there's no way we're going to spend almost 20K$ on SQL Server or Oracle DB. So, I'd like to allay his concerns about the SQL Service Express option.

Hi all. I'd be grateful for experts' comments on these questions:

Is there a way an end-user (a reader of the WebHelp) can specify keywords in the search query (something perhaps like "kwd:installation"), such that only topics with the keyword "installation" are returned?
Is there a way to search across all topics that have NO keyword (eg, "kwd:"")?
Is there a way to configure RH such that when an author creates a new topic, a default keyword, or set of keywords, is added automatically to the search Keyword field for the topic?

A question concerning implementing a "feedback link"

All-

My objective is to put a "Send Feedback" link in the footer of each RH-generated HTML page, to solicit user comment on the content. I've found very little on this subject. This page, from the "I'd rather be Writing" blog back in 2007, recommends adding a script like the following:

It looked promising. But it keeps giving me a Expecting")" error when I use the "Look" button in the master page. (The scripts link doesn't appear in the published footer.) However, in the script, the parans are balanced: two left, then two right.

Any help would be appreciated.

Any comments on speed and robustness of RH Server running on Windows 7 and using SQL Server Express?

Hi. Can anyone comment on their experience using RH Server on Windows 7 and using SQL Server Express? That is, is it stable and fast enough for delivering Web Help Pro documentation to support occasional viewer browses. (We would have approx 250 customers who would occasionally access the HTML docs that support our software.)

Our company is not keen on spending $s on Windows Server and an MS or Oracle database.

Hi. Can RH server host JavaDocs, or can it only host WebHelp Pro/Flash Pro. I'd like to publish JavaDocs but use the authorization features built in to RS Server.

Perhaps there's a utility for importing JavaDocs into a RH project, and from thence to a WebHelp Pro output?

How to safely search/replace only text that end-user sees?

Hi all. Is there a way to do a safe search and replace action, across an entire project, text that the user sees with a browser, and NOT any other text, like what occurs in file names, paths, style names, attributes, CSS, etc.

My guess is that selecting the option Exclude HTML Tags would not be sufficient, and that a regular expression might be in order.

Can RH Server enforce audience access rights?

Hi Experts...

My company has standard documentation that all customers can view. We also have documentation for premium products. We would like to have customers only access the documentation for the premium products (one or more) they’ve purchased. Can RH Server enforce these access rights, and can access rights be granted via API to an external authorization system? The PDF on the server is a bit unclear on access rights. I’m not sure whether it’s referring to access rights for RoboHelp authors, or for access rights for end users (those viewing the published material). I’d be primarily interested in the latter.

The RH Server instructions appear to specify only WebHelp Pro as the type of projects that can be published to RH Server. Is this true? If so, this would be unfortunate. I'd really hoped to be able to use the content categories feature of the regular WebHelp layout.

Can anyone confirm that RH Server does NOT require, or make use of, Active Directory. (The spec sheet doesn't indicate one way or another.)
Does anyone know if is possible to use MySQL for the RH database. (The spec sheet list it, but perhaps it works anyway.)

Hi all. Can anyone comment as to whether or not a Windows 7 system would be robust enough to host customer-facing documentation (with var. access rules incorporated)? Or, is a Windows server worth the extra $.

We have about 220 customers who'll be making occasional access to the docs. (Hard to know how many would be concurrent at heaviest use.)

Hi. Do any of you know if RoboHelp 11 supports any type of access rights to published HTML docs?

My company has a basic product that all customers have access to. We also have "premium" products that are available to customers who pay for them, and at the moment we prefer not to expose the premium products' docs to customers who haven't purchased those products. What I'd like to be able to do is have some way that a customer can log in to access the basic HTML docs and, based on their login rights, have links to the premium docs be made visible and link to the HTML docs for those products.

Note that for now, I'm OK with maintaining separate RH projects for the basic doc set, and one for each premium doc set. (Each would have their own search domain.)

Two questions about the logistics of PDF for review...

Hi experts. I'd appreciate your thoughts on the RH feature "Create PDF for Review". I've come across a couple concerns...

The instructions say that the source RH files shouldn't be edited/altered while a PDF document of the same material is out for review. This is understandable from a synchronizing perspective. But I'm wondering if any of you think it's a non-starter that the source material is locked. I often can't wait for people to return comments, even by a requested deadline, before making edits. This is my first foray into RH docs, and right now I'm more inclined to use cut-and-paste-in-emails to request and receive doc comments.
For those of you who do use the feature, and use the shared PDF option, do you know of a service that will host the group-commentable PDFs? Adobe used to have a service for this, but it seems like it is no more. And our IT guy is super security conscious and is so far resistant to have a group-writable directory on one of our servers.

Observations and questions regarding merged help.

Hi. I've just been reading Mr Grainge's fine directions on how to generate merged help, using his sample files in the process. I'd appreciate some comments on the following observations and questions.

It appears that before one generates merged help, the user should ensure that all child projects have been individually generated first so that all recent changes to those projects' content are present in the generated merged help. In short, it appears that generating the parent project doesn't automatically pre-generate the child projects, Is this correct?
I also experimented with putting text in one of the child topics, and applying conditional build tags to them. I found that the conditional text that appears in the merged, in the text from a particular child project, is whatever conditional text was exposed when the child project was last run. It also seems that the conditional build tags specified in the parent project (via the single source config) has no affect on the text exposed/hidden for the child projects. Is this to be expected? If so, can I expect the same behavior regarding user defined variables?
If my observations above are correct, is there any technique or script one can use to cause all child HTML text to be generated (per a specified single source config for each child) first, and THEN generate the merge via generating the parent help?
Regardless of the conclusions to the above three items, are there merged project features that you'd like to see added to RH 12?

Any way to increase font size in RoboHelp UI?

Hi. Is there any way to increase the font size of the text in the RoboHelp (11) UI itself, that is, for example, the items that appear in the Project manager, Topic List, Single Source Layouts, and other panels?

I have my monitor set to optimal resolution, but this seems to cause this text to be too small for comfort. Is there a way to increase the font size from within RH? If not, is there a Windows-level change I can make?

Attempting to print PDFs fail with an compilation error. Plz assist....

Hi. I'm tire kicking RH11 / FM 12 with the trial copy.

On 3 or 4 separate documents, I can successfully print to .docx format, but I can't print to PDFs. When I try, the program quits with message just below. I've also attached the compbilation log, which ends with "Internal error encountered, Failed to generate Printed Documentation. "

I can print the resulting .docx doc to PDF from Word. But that's an extra step I'd rather not have to take.

Any tips on what might be causing this PDF crash would be appreciated. I see that other's have had similar problems in the past, but its not clear if their was conclusion on their issues.

Hi all. Below is my initial wish list for new features in RoboHelp 12. Feel free to comment/contribute. At some point I'll forward a list to Adobe and/or add some of them suggestions via the official suggestions page.

Note that I've been a FrameMaker (unstructured) user for years, so a lot of my questions a features I miss in the FM world.

When making links, have option to make them dynamic, so that the link text is an attribute of the target, such as step number or heading text. (Like ParaText and ParaNum in FM.) When those are updated, so is the link text. This feature would make maintaining a lot of areas much easier.
For a "ParaNum" example, say you have this (blue text are links):

    a. Do something.
    b. If something is not installed already, do these substeps, otherwise, skip to step c.
         1) Substep.
         2) Substep.
         3) Substep.
    c. Do more stuff.
Later, if you add a step between a. and b, step "d" becomes "d". The link in "skip to step c" would correctly link to renumbered step d, but the text will still be "skip to step c", not "...d".

For a "ParaText" example, suppose you have a link to, say, a certain paragraph with a Heading 1 style applied. In another section or topic, you have "see Heading_1_text". Then, the text of Heading 1 styled paragraph changes. Well now, the link to it in the other section/topic still displays the same link text. It should dynamically change according to the target's text.
Add the ability to use parentheses to group conditions in conditional text arguments, or perhaps use the FM model (of shifting condition names to display and not-display columns).
Allow the user to construct conditional build sets, in the same way the user can presently create variable sets. (I believe Flare offers conditional build sets.)
Add the ability to copy and past styles and properties from one bit of content to another.
Make some properties part of styles. Recent use case: I wanted to indent all tables created so far, which share a common table style, by a certain amount. (In html parlance, change the tables' left-margin value.) Couldn't. Had to manualy intent each table. The separation of property attributes from style attributes might be an HTML/CSS reality. But it seems to me this could be coded around.
After changing the name of a style, content to which the formerly named style was applied looses the application of the style, as though the style were manually removed from each bit of content.
If the user attempts to delete a conditional build tag, and the tag is currently applied to something content in the project, there's no prompt to ask what you want to do the tagged content during the delete. It should do what FM does: Ask if you want to simply remove the style from the content, or delete any content that has the style applied. RH should do the same.
When doing an Edit > Find and Replace in Files action, when the user opens up a hit, the hit is displayed in sort of a view-only html page with the text highlighted. Apparently this feature is designed JUST for search and replace. I'd rather see the hit be opened up in the normal WYSIWYG page or, if its HTML code, an editable html page. I realize that RH has Find and Replace features, but they only work on the currently opened topic.

Well these are my first 8 wanna-haves. If I'm missing an existing feature or technique that would make any of these not needed. Plz let me (and other RH newbie readers) know.

How to avoid repeating logos when creating Background in a custom skin?

I'm trying to design a custom robohelp skin. However, I'm seeing a repeating logo, as shown below. It appears to be repeating below the line that separates the top area from the rest of the panel. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here and how I can stop the second image?

Note that the image is also duplicated at the far right of the top area, so its repeating horizontally and vertically.

Note: I apologize if this has been asked already. I can't seem to find the search window in the forum UI any more. If you can help here too, I'd appreciated it.

Some questions about sharing resources, eg via dropbox...

Experts-

I see that one way to share all topics with another RH user is to open the Topics List pod, select all topics, then drag the lot to Resource Manager (eg, the Dropbox folder therein). Is there a way to add images and other non-topic files in a similar way, or do I need to dive into each directory in project files, then select-drag the files to Dropbox?
Is there a way to configure RH such that all new files that are added to a project are automatically copied to Resource Manager so one doesn't have to remember to do this manually?
Is there a way to share resources other than files in the Project Files folder, such as TOC definitions, Index defs, Glossary defs, and the single-source layouts? I see that I can't drag these items to the Dropbox folder. The idea is to be able to have other writers recreate the project on there systems. (Perhaps I'm missing the purpose of Resource Manager. Perhaps duplication of entire projects is best performed using a CMS.)

RH 101 question: How to make simple link to a dynamically numbered step?

Below in blue is a crude reprint of a piece of procedure in a RH 11 topic. The numbering is done via multilevel list.

What I'd like to do is make a link to step 10i at the end of step 10 c, such that it will appear as "c. Skip to step i". But I can't find how this is done.

Note that I have a bookmark at the start of step i. However, when I link to the bookmark in step c, it looks like this:

c. Skip to step XREF_13924_g_When_Oracle_11g.

I found I can trim the link text so that just the step number "g" is shown. But note that the step number is "g", not "i". This appears to be because the bookmark was created when the step was "g".

In short, I want the link text to change dynamically if the step of the link target is renumbered, like the way it works in FrameMaker. How can this be done in RH? Is there a DHTML trick of some kind?

Hi. I have RH11 and I'm working with topics that I imported from FM12. I just discovered a lot of phantom classes that start "FM_SC", followed by several numbers, sprinkled throughout the text, as shown just below in the quote. Any idea what these are all about? It seems like they can be safely deleted, but I'm not sure. If safe to delete, are there any tools that can delete them en-mass?

The main downside to these classes is that when I click on text that follows one of these items, the highlighted style in the Style tab becomes unselected.

The Electronic Program Guide (EPG) provides subscribers

Hi. I'm wondering if any of you can direct me to a source(s) of best practices for RoboHelp use. (I'm asking of course about resources appart from Mr. Grainge's fine site.)

Type type of topics might inlcude such things as:

Tips and tricks for importing from Framemaker.
Style tips. For example, the best stype to use for the title of a topic. (RH's tutorials use Header 1 as for topic titles, as opposed to some user-defined "Title" style. This suggests Header 1 would be used only once in a topic!)
Text and design tips to enhance the end-user experience.

Any way to safely delete unused styles in a project?

Hi experts.

Is there a way to determine the unused styles in an entire project, then safely delete them? When I start deleting a style, the prompt just asks if I'm sure I want to delete it. There's nothing like "Wait! this style is used at least one topic. If you delete this style, the text will be formatted with <some default?> style."

Related question: Is there a way to locate topics in which a particular style is used?

Hi. I have an issue whereby when I import an unstructured FM (v12) document into RH (v11) project, autonumbered lists in the FM files don't have correct numbering after the import.

The following describes 2 import tests I've done. (In the FM doc, lists start with a paragraph that have ListNumber1 style (<n=1>) and the remaining list items have the ListNumber+ style (<n+>).)

Import test 1:

I configure the import for ListNumber1 and ListNumber+ paragraphs to Convert autonumber to Multilevel list.
I leave the Robohelp Style mapping to the default ([Source]).
Perform the import.

RESULT: All items in the list in the output are numbered "1.".

Import test 2:

As in test 1, I configure the import for ListNumber1 and ListNumber+ paragraphs to Convert autonumber to Multilevel list.
For the RoboHelp Style mapping, I map ListNumber1 and ListNumber+ to BodyLevel1 (a built-in option).
Perform the import.

Hi. I have a user whose interested to see if search hits can be modified to look like this... (ie, the red bit is added):

<breadcrumb path><topic 1>

<breadcrumb path><topic 2>

<breadcrumb path><topic 3>

...

The user wants to be able to see the context of the topic via the breadcrumbs to help weigh the accuracy of the hit before clicking on it.

Experts-

I thought I found a solution to numbering sets in a topic, where the top-level step is numbering 1 after a heading. The test:

Create a paragraph style for top-level steps (as in a procedural step). I called the style level_2 (sic). It's based on Normal, with a little indenting.
Create a paragraph style for 2nd-level (sub) step. I called the style level_3 (sic). It's based on Normal, with a little indenting.
Created a multilevel list style, called MLL_style_1
Associate level 2 of the multilevel list style with paragraph style level_2.
Associate level 3 of the multilevel list style with paragraph style level_3.
Associate level 1 of the multilevel list style with Heading 1.

The sole purpose of #6 above is to force the restart of the numbering of the Level_2 styles. This seems to work:

HOWEVER, I've noticed a problem and a curiosity:

Problem: I don't want any numbering to appear in front of Header 1 text. I can't find a way to make the numbering property of level 1 of the MLL_style_1 be nothing or null. When I delete all text in the Edit Style space, it reverts to a default <x>:

So, do you have any thoughts on how to remove the numbering from the header, OR how to otherwise force the numbering of the first step to be 1.

Curiosity: The first Header 1 item in the first image above is the first occurrence of that paragraph style in the topic. However, it's autonumbered as 2. This seems to be caused by the presence before the header of paragraph styles that are associated with the lower multilevel list levels.

Any thoughts on why the first Header 1 should start at 2?

Is there any way to control table indentation via a style?

HI. I'd like to see if there's a way to control the indentation of tables in a document by simply adjusting the margin-left value via a (Table?) style?

I finding that table indentation is adjusted in a table's properties settings:

<table class="AlternateBlueColorGrid" style="padding-left: 6.00pt; padding-top: 6.00pt;

padding-right: 6.00pt; padding-bottom: 6.00pt; margin-left: 40px;"

cellspacing="0" width="577">

This is fine for adjusting a single table. But supposing I want to indent all tables in a document or, better, all tables of a certain style. There doesn't seem to be a way to make the indentation setting part of a table style to facilitate this action, at least not through the table settings dialog.

I see that I can specify margins in a div style, but I can't seem to apply a div style to a table (or paragraphs for that matter. I need to read up on div styles.)

I've a few questions about style management:

Is there a way to search for where a style is used in a project or topic?
If so, is there a way to search-and-replace, ie, find where a style is used and replace it with another style?
When deleting a style, is there a way RH can be set to display a warning if the style to be deleted is being used anywhere?

FrameMaker handles the above use cases very well. However, I can't yet see how these actions are done in RH.

Hi. I'm curious if anyone has any experience or tips to share about a RoboHelp environment that uses BOTH source control and cloud sharing.

My company uses perforce. I'm purchasing a couple copies of TCS5, one for me in California, one for writer colleague in Europe. I'd like to use Perforce for version control/backup, but use Dropbox for RH asset sharing and sync. Is this workabout? I'm guessing that the Dropbox/sync mechnism won't work if one or both of us has not checked out a file that needs to be (automatically via sync) updated. ("Not checked out" = file is in read only state.)

If RH automatically checks files in/out of perforce in order to complete a cloudshare sync, that would be most cool!

Can anyone recommend the correct use of Paragraph and/or list styles to achieve the following in a RH topic?

Procedure X

1) Step one of procedure x

2) Step two of procedure x

3) Step three of procedure x

Procedure Y

When using Paragraph sty.es set with autonumbering, I get this (note that the continuation of step numbering in Procedure Y...)

I'm looking for the ability to both continue numbering after inserting a non-numbered item (such as code sample or graphic, etc.) This appears to be the default behavior. AND, I want to be able to start separate procedures within the same topic at step 1.

I used to the way unstructured Framemaker paragraph styles work, where you have an inititial paragraph style with numbering 1 (or a), for example, and subsequent steps use a style that adds 1 to the number of the prevous step style. But, there doesn't appear to be such a feature in RH? Please advise how you've created the numbering in multiple procedures in the same doc.
