Need help with merged projects RH10

I have a project that needs to display the same merged projects from different single source layouts.

The project is Retail Sales. The single source layouts are Call Center and Field. Both single source layouts display the same two merged projects. Some of the topics I publish from each single source layout need to be different, both within the merged projects, and in the main parent project. I control them with conditional build tags.

The Call Center single source layout works. Both the merged projects display correctly. Blocked topics are blocked appropriately. Everything is wonderful, birds are chirping, and honeybees are gathering nectar. There is a rainbow.

However, the Field single source layout does NOT work. NONE of the merged projects display. I haven't even gotten to test the conditional build tags because I can't get the merged projects to work.

I have created new single source layouts to replace the Field multiple times, to no avail. I have checked and double-checked output paths (one goes to Call_Center and one goes to Field), both to my PC and to the publishing server. They both go to a different folder on the same server, so it apparently isn't server-related.

I went through the single source layout dialogs for both parent and child projects screen by screen, taking screen shots and printing them out. I compared them side-by-side, and identified a very few very superficial differences (like "apply the same style sheet to all topics"). I changed these minor things in the "DOESN'T WORK" single source layout, and published, then checked the output before addressing the next minor difference. Nothing changed.

I also have other projects that don't permit me to create merged projects AT ALL. And the programmers can't troubleshoot with me until Friday.

Does anyone have any thoughts what might be the problem? Getting merged projects to work almost seems totally random, and I can't identify why that is.

I have RH11 installed on a new PC, but haven't taken delivery yet. Is this something RH11 might address?

RH9 Is there a "no cache" switch?

We're having problems immediately seeing some topics live because of cache issues on the proxy server. My programmer asked me to poke around in the project to see if there was a switch in the primary layout that would make "no cache" the default for all of the topics, but we couldn't find it.

He does NOT want me to copy/paste "no cache" HTML code into the individual topics because he said the code may go away with future updates.

Is there some setting I can use to do this?

Audio not recording

I'm new with Captivate 6 and I'm having problems. I have tried recording on a headset and a desk microphone. I checked the settings to make sure the right microphone was set up for whichever one I was using. I tried Audio>Record to>Slide, Audio>Record to>Background, and clicking the microphone icom to display the Slide Audio dialog - I recorded from there. I clicked Properties>Audio>Add Audio. Nothing works.

I hear the audio for the mouse clicks, etc., but can't capture voiceovers, and don't know how.

The only thing that worked was capturing the demo in Presenter 8, converting it to an MP3 and inserting it into the Captivate file with Audio>Import To>Slide. Surely this is not what I should have to do, right? Can someone please help?

Can I remove the Submit button?

When I first created quizzes, I accepted the defaults, and found you have to click Submit each time you answer a question. You actually need a submit button if you go that route.

I found the "Submit All" option in Quiz Preferences, and selected it. When I tested the quiz, I answered questions and clicked Next to proceed to the next screen. Submit All does exactly what I need it to do - at the end of the quiz it asks me if I want to submit all, and I click yes. Then my score displays. At no time do I need a Submit button in any of the quiz slides.

However, every slide in the quiz now has a "Submit All" button - this option changes the button from "Submit" to "Submit All." When you click it, you get an error telling you the test is incomplete.

I don't need it and it's confusing, so I'd like to remove it. But I can't delete it from the quiz slide or the Master Slide - I can only move it. There is no right click option to get rid of it. The only thing I have found I can do is gray it out by changing its attributes.

Is there some way I can get rid of it?

I'm creating a bazillion quiz slides, and the multiple choice slide defaults to 2 answers. I NEVER use only two answers for multiple choice. How can I set it to always display 5 answers? I couldn't find a switch in Edit>Preferences, and I've looked just about everywhere.

Print Button missing from list

When I create a new project the Print option is frequently missing from the Toolbar Buttons field in Webhelp Settings. Sometimes I close the dialog, reopen it, and "Print" is miraculously there, so I can select it. Other times I can't make it display. Is there a switch somewhere, where I can indicate that I ALWAYS want the Print button? If not, how do I make it display when it doesn't? Thanks!

Background image not importing from PowerPoint correctly CP6

I imported a PowerPoint presentation into Captivate 6. All of the images imported successfully...except for one background image. The blue background shows up as white in both the preview and in Captivate. It's a jpg file - just like all the others. The same thing happened when I saved this particular background image as a bitmap from the original Photoshop psd file - white in the preview and in the Captivate slide.

Then I tried saving it as a png file. This time it showed up in the preview as blue, but still showed up as white in the Captivate slide. Is there anything I can do to make it work? Thanks!

Poor Quality Videos in RH10

I need to publish some software simulations in RH10 Webhelp, and am having a great deal of difficulty. The only ones that seem to work are the videos I create from scratch in Captivate - these publish as .SWF files.

I began with an MP4 file, created in Adobe Presenter 8, which I converted in Adobe Media Encoder to FLV and F4V. I selected Maximum Quality in Media Encoder.

When I launch these video files in other software, they're fine. Resolution is great. As soon as I insert them into Robohelp using the Insert>Multimedia/Demo option, the screen resolution is awful. Preview mode is bad, so whatever happens, happens immediately. Generating doesn't fix anything either.

The MP4 I inserted doesn't play AT ALL (or at least not for the five minutes I waited), and it didn't display the controls at the bottom. It was just a black rectangle on the page. I even tried uploading the FLV file as a baggage file with a link to it - didn't work. Nothing works.

I tried converting the files to SWF in two free converters because Encoder doesn't give me that option. I didn't get audio on either one, but the resolution was good. There was another converter I could have paid for that gave me audio, but I'm looking for other solutions in the software I already have.

I can't insert images of the screenshots to show you - I'm getting an error so something's wrong on the site, I guess.

How does everyone else get high-resolution videos in Robohelp?

RH10 Parent/Child Directory Structure

I know that you cannot embed a child project within a child project. When the parent displays in the browser, Child Project 1 is on the TOC, but Child Project 2 simply isn't in the Child Project 1 book.

Now I have a situation where I am trying to restructure my help system to display child projects in multiple different ways for different audiences. We've already had the discussion about why I don't combine 40,000 topics, video files and PDFs into one project and use categories to sort them - the project is too big. Robohelp only handles 2 gigs of files in one project before it crashes. So that is not an option.

What I did was create multiple parent projects, and publish each child project to multiple destinations using multiple single source layouts. Each parent displays only the child projects that audience needs to see. That part works fine.

However, now I have a problem on the server that reminds me of embedding child projects into child projects, and I'm wondering if I can even do this.

A parent project apparently needs to be on the root of the server, or its child projects don't display. In other words, you CANNOT put a parent project into a folder. That means you cannot separate the parents from one another because they all need to be in the same location. So, you cannot have multiple parent projects on one server - you actually need a separate server for each one.

Am I correct about this? That's what I found out when I tested the scenario. I just want to verify this with someone before I send my progress report.

Connection Error Captivate 6/New Flash Player

I just upgraded to the latest version of Flash Player, and can no longer publish videos in Captivate. I changed the Flash Player settings to everything from version 9 to version 11 when I published, and nothing works. Do I have to go back to an earlier version of the software, or is there a fix? Could anything else be causing this?

I am posting the videos in Robohelp. Typically you insert Cativate videos into a Robohelp topic by uploading both the .swf and the index.html file to the topic. That doesn't work. I can insert an FLV file that someone else compiled earlier, but the original video was created in Presenter at 1280X700, and her video converter changed the settings to make it narrower, so the FLV is distorted.

I inserted the MP4 into Captivate, and it plays in the preview. The published SWF file does NOT play, and it doesn't work in Robohelp when I publish it to online help.

Is this a Flash Player issue? What do I do?

Which is the correct .swf file?

I've just published a PowerPoint presentation with a Presenter quiz. I want to insert an .swf file into a Robohelp topic - but can't see how to do it. I have several .swf files, and none of them displays anything independently. They apparently weren't compiled into one video file when I clicked Publish, and I don't know what to do with the files in the folder.

With Captivate, you have an .swf file and a index.html file.

The files in the image below are all old .swf files. The only current date files are in the two folders. But, the files in the data and metadata folders have an .swf file for every slide. I viewed Index.htm after I published to see the results, but when I copy the file elsewhere and try to launch it, nothing happens. So it only works in the folder.

How do I insert a Presenter video into Robohelp? Thanks!

Quiz Navigation Warning: "Un-attempted questions"

I'm creating my first Presenter 8 quiz. Each time I preview it, I encounter errors and functionality that can't be right, so I'm wondering if my settings are off, and what I should do. I've set everything up to advance manually.

When I answer a question incorrectly and then "click anywhere" to continue, I get the following error:

When you click No, the error goes away, and you have to manually advance to the next slide. Then it continues on until I answer another question incorrectly. When you click Yes, the quiz goes away. I really suspect it wasn't designed to do all that.

What did I do to cause this?
What is supposed to REALLY happen when you answer a question incorrectly?
Why did this happen earlier when I answered questions correctly? There was nothing "unattempted" - I ended up having to remove the slides that created the error in order to advance through the whole quiz.

Internal Error Presenter 8

I'm beginning to see this error on a number of projects we're saving to a shared drive. Earlier projects don't have this error, and we don't know what is causing it.

We're using Presenter 8. When we click Browse and navigate to the folder on the shared drive to open it, the project appears to load, then aborts with this error. It's happening on a number of projects.

How do I remove the presentation intro?

I can change the intro video image, but I can't remove it entirely, and I need to be able to do this. I also need to remove the sound because I'm trying to transfer a recorded presentation (converted to an MP3) to a Captivate video. When I import that MP3 to the slide, I get the sound before and after the narration. ALL I want is the narration.

You can't clip it from within Presenter - at least not with the scissors icon. Does this mean I need to purchase additional software to be able to edit the MP4 to remove that portion of a video? Or is there some way to disable it in Presenter?

Presenter 8 pause during recordings

The online help tells me to to this to pause during a recording:

To pause the recording, press the Pause key or right-click the Adobe Presenter Video Creator icon in the system tray, and click Pause Recording.
Note: When you right-click the Adobe Presenter icon and choose to Pause recording, these actions are recorded along with your main recording. You can use the trim option to trim this part of the recording.
Adobe Presenter Video Creator screen appears and displays the pause icon to indicate that you have paused the recording. Click the record button to resume recording or click the edit icon () to end recording and edit the video.
To end the recording, press Shift + End, or click the Adobe Presenter Video Creator icon in the system tray, and click End Recording.

There is no right-click menu when I right click the icon in the system tray. That was my first observation.

Then, when I press Pause, nothing happens. Furthermore, even if something did happen, the instructions say Presenter will record those keystrokes anyway, and I have to go back in and clip them out.

Am I misunderstanding this? Is there any way to simply pause the recording and rewind, so to speak, when you flub your lines?

Choppy display in preview/after publication

I'm very new to Captivate, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I just created my first software simulation. It was nothing fancy - no audio, no animation. I even removed the highlights on the fields. All it has is screen shifts, scrolling, mouse actions and text boxes. I messed with the slide times a little, but did nothing else. When I realized the preview was acting as if I had a memory issue (images went all wonky), I shut all the other applications down.

The project contains 86 slides. It begins to act up in the middle when I display online help that has a editable PDF form in the window. I demonstrate how you add text to the PDF fields, and the screen goes black for a few seconds, but you see the mouse. Then the image reappears as I'm typing in the field.

Further down it acts up again. It displays the contents of an earlier slide superimposed over the one that's supposed to display. This is where I began suspecting a memory issue - but I have the maximum amount of RAM, so that's odd. But then it heals itself toward the end of the presentation and acts as if nothing is wrong.

I published it to both SWF and HTML5 (I have to post it in Robohelp, so I need both). The published version acts up the same way the preview did.

Are there any known software conflicts that could be causing this? Should I be flipping a switch somewhere to prevent it?

Edited: I tried "Force Re-publish" and it still doesn't work. In fact, there may even be MORE screens that black out on me than before. (I'd have to compare versions to be sure). But you see the text box on a black background, and you see mouse movement. Thoughts?

RH10 Conditional Build Tags not working

I have a parent project and about 40 child projects. I created seven conditional build tags, and applied them to the various child project folders in the parent project's TOC, based on the categories they should display under.

Then, I went to the parent project's Single Source Layout and defined those categories in so that only certain child projects would display when you selected an item from the Category dropdown.

I followed the steps in my Robohelp user guide book, and double checked with Adobe help, but must have done something wrong or missed a step. The tags are blocking EVERYTHING except for the folders that have no tags applied. I have double checked, and each tag displays the appropriate other tags that should NOTdisplay, but excludes the one tag that SHOULD display. For instance, the tag I highlighed under Content Categories is "Compliance." If you can read the image, the Conditional Build Expression field contains "NOT (everything else)," but does not have "Compliance" in it. The instructions tell me that the Compliance folder (a child project) should display, but it doesn't.

Furthermore, when you pull up the project it displays with an empty TOC, and you have to wait about two full minutes for it to load. You then have to wait an additional two minutes each time you select a category from the dropdown. When I had no conditional tags or category dropdown, everything loaded just fine.

Why is it a) not working and b) hanging up when I display the project?

New Captivate project from Presenter 8 video

I tried to save a Presenter 8 video as a PowerPoint. Then I attempted to create a new Captivate project from that PowerPoint. However, it didn't work.

Presenter also created an MP4, which I can use instead, but I'm just kind of exploring options and wondering if you can only create a Captivate project from an actual PowerPoint presentation, rather than a Presenter video. Is my guess right?

Pagination RH10

I'm trying to apply pagination to my projects, but the following instructions don't always work:

Even though you can set pagination for any Word paragraph style, the topic generated must contain relevant, complete information for the reader. For example, if you set pagination for Heading 3, you run the risk of creating topics with only task-level instructions. In this case, the required contextual information required to complete the task is isolated in another Heading 3 level topic. To avoid such disjointed, incomplete topics, set the pagination at a higher level.

Do one of the following:
- Select File > Import > Word Document.
- Select File > Link > Word Document.
- Select File > Project Settings.
Click Edit under Word Document.
In the Conversion Settings dialog box, in the Paragraph group, select the paragraph style on which to base pagination.
Select the option marked Pagination (Split into topics based on this style) and click OK.

RoboHelp splits the documents into topics using the specified pagination styles.

When I get to Step 3 - in some projects, NOT ALL projects, I have nothing to select. This is what I see. There is no plus sign beside any of the Word Document Settings items, so I can't expand the item and there are no paragraph styles for me to select for pagination.

All projects have the same style sheet attached to all topics. The same styles are in every Word document I import. I created some projects in RH9 and some in RH10. I haven't gone back to check for a pattern on RH version yet. Other than that, I can't think of anything that might be causing this. Do you have any thoughts? Thanks!

RH 10 Style Sheet setup in Single Source Layout

I would like to apply a different style sheet to different output in multiple single source layouts. I went into Webhelp Settings>Content Categories>Content and clicked Apply to All Topics, then selected the appropriate style sheet from the CSS dropdown. I did the same in another layout with a different style sheet. It didn't work. The only way I seem to be able to attach style sheets is through the Topic List. Is there something else I need to do first to get that switch to work in the layout?

RH10 Create New Style Sheet from Existing

The instructions Adobe posted for Robohelp 10 are as follows:

Create a style sheet

The new style sheet (default.css) is the default until you create a style sheet or link another style sheet to a new topic.

Click the Style Sheet button . If necessary, select View > Toolbars > Formatting to view the toolbar.
Select New.
In Name, type a filename and include the .css extension.
In Folder, select a location.
(Optional) To base your new style sheet on an existing one, select Copy Styles From. Select a style sheet.
Click Create, create new styles, and click OK.

The problem is, I don't have the Style Sheet icon (shown in Step 1) on my formatting menu, or any other menu. The closest thing I have is the Properties of Selected Item icon, which opens to your style sheets when you click it from a topic. However, there is no "Copy Styles From" selection on any tab, or in any dropdown.

I can copy the .css file and give it a new name, attach it to a topic and edit the attributes of the styles and hence create a new style sheet. But if Adobe says there's a way to do it within Robohelp with a "Copy Styles From" selection, I'd like to know how it works. Does anyone know where it is? Thanks!

Problems Publishing Captivate Demo RH10

I've also been out on the Captivate forum with this question, which was addressed last summer. Published Captivate 6 videos display "Connection Error" when you play them. The thread instructed me to download a patch to fix this. I did that, and others in that forum say the fix worked for them, but I don't know what they used to post their videos, and I didn't notice anyone stating they were using Robohelp.

I can't get the video to play when I insert it into Robohelp. I've tried Insert>Adobe Captivate Demo, and I've also tried importing the HTML file. In both instances, the video still displays "Connection Error" when you try to play it.

Does anyone know if I need to do something else in order for this to work in Robohelp?

Remove broken links to baggage files

Yesterday I thought I would take a shortcut and copy/paste the Index file from one project into a another project. The problem is, I was careless and copy/pasted the Table of Contents file by mistake, renamed it for the current project, saw what I'd done when the TOC changed right away, then had to fix things in a hurry.

I put the original Table of Contents file back, but Robohelp remembers links to baggage files from the bad TOC that are not in the current project, and displays them in the Project Manager with a red X through them. I can't find any way to delete them. How do I clean this up?

Conditional formatting not ending where it should

RH10 - I applied conditional formatting to a large portion of text within a topic to exclude it from the "External" site. This portion contains numbered and bulleted text and a number of paragraphs.

The last two lines of the topic do NOT have conditional formatting applied to them - they are supposed to display on the external site, but they don't.

I went into the HTML code, and found the following at the beginning of every paragraph within that range: <?rh-cbt_start condition="External" ?>. At the end of the range, the code was this: <?rh-cbt_end ?>. Since that didn't work, I pasted condition="External" ? into that string of code so it was now . <?rh-cbt_end condition="External"?> It still didn't work.

The only thing that worked was cutting the last two lines of text, and pasting them just above the conditional formatting range. But that puts things out of order for the internal site.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm out of ideas.

Problem importing PowerPoint file

I'm new to Captivate, and I'm still messing around and watching tutorials, etc. I attempted to import a PowerPoint presentation, and was bewildered that one of the slides didn't import properly. There is nothing different about that slide, except for its background image. The one that does NOT work is a .png file (the others are .jpg files). Instead of the background image, the slide displays, "Click Box" in the center.

Here is the original PP. Notice that Slide 4 displays with a blue background. The no-background "Click Box" version in Captivate displays below it.

So then I converted the .png to a .jpg, inserted the .jpg background into the slide and reimported. This time the image displays, but it still says "Click Box." I tried resetting the background in PowerPoint to remove the .png file (I guess that's what resetting does), inserting the .jpg image, and reimporting the presentation, but "Click Box" is still there. Any thoughts on how to fix this without deleting the slide and creating a new one? Because I have dozens of presentations I created with the same template (and the .png image) and that would make me so tired...

Presenter Training Interactions

I've just gotten Presenter 8, and am poking around YouTube for training videos. One of them showed me how to insert training interactions in my PowerPoint presentation without defining what interactions are, or why I would want them. The online help didn't give any information either.

So I inserted an interaction, and the text was not editable. It was just as if I'd inserted an image.It has buttons with labels, but no apparent way to link them to anything. I could delete the whole image (or interaction), but that was it. I was able to make changes by going to Manage Interactions, but was still wondered what the interaction did, and why I would use it.

Could someone please shed some light on this for me? What do these do, and how do I make them work?Thanks!

Designate form field type during import process Acrobat 10

Is there a way for me to assign a type of form field to content in Word when I import it into Acrobat to create a form? Acrobat knows to create entry fields when I input underscores after text, and it knows to create digital signature fields when it sees the word "signature" followed by underscores.

However, I'm having a problem with check boxes and radio buttons. I've been creating them manually, which means they're never exactly the same size or positioned exactly right. It's also very time-consuming. Is there something that indicates to Acrobat that it should create a radio button or check box, much like the underscores tell it to create an entry field?

RH10 - Conditional Tags in Multiscreen HTML5

Edited: I found it. I didn't realize that "expanding the screen profile" (per the online help) meant double clicking it. I kept clicking the plus sign.

Exporting forms data to Excel Acrobat X

Windows 7/RH 9 Conflict

We upgraded to Windows 7 a couple of weeks ago, and since that time we've experienced problems using the Search feature. When you type in a word that is DEFINITELY in one or more topics, the Search results are "no topics found." It doesn't matter if the word is in quotes or not in quotes. It doesn't matter if it's a single word or phrase.

I've asked the programmers to look into this, but wondered if anyone else has addressed this and has a solution. If so, please advise.

Conditional Build RH9

I am applying conditional build tags to several topics. I have two separate publishing destinations for Webhelp output. One should display the tagged topics, and the other should not. It appears as though I have to go in there and change the settings each time I publish.

There are two Content Categories in Webhelp Settings:

"Underwriting," the default for our internal online help. I created a Single Source Layout path to publish it to the "Internal" file directory. When I want to publish here, I check the INTERNAL server in Webhelp Settings > Publish.
"Brokers," the version that has to have several topics blocked. I set it up to publish to the "Broker" file directory. When I want to publish here, I check the EXTERNAL server in Webhelp Settings > Publish.

The Broker content category has the conditional tag "NOT Brokers." The Underwriting content category does not have any conditional tags.

The only way it seems to work properly is if I go into Content Categories and set the default to Brokers, and then go into Publish and check the external server. Then I have to go in and change the default back to Underwriting and go into Publish to select the internal server.

Is there any way to set this up so Robohelp knows what goes where without me having to fiddle with the defaults and publishing settings every single time? Ideally, I would like to be able to check both the internal and the external file server on the Publish screen and upload them both at once, and have the correct data blocked from the external drive. Is this possible?

Video Management

I'm evaluating a trial version of Captivate 6, and I swear I sat through all the "getting started" videos and checked online and in Help for these answers, but I keep getting socked with Captivate Advanced Tricks overload. This is really basic stuff.

What is the maximum size for a video? Apparently there is one because I crashed a presentation with a large video.
When I insert a video, the default placement is the center of all the presentation slides. Can I change this? How to I rearrange all slides in an inserted video at once to place them all in, for instance, the upper right hand corner?
How do I delete the whole video at once, without having to schlep through every slide?
What is the difference between an event video and a multi-slide synchronized video, and when do I use each?
I do not understand the Video Management dialog...???

Mp4 Video messes up preview

I'm evaluating Captivate, and working with the trial version. I created a software simulation with 24 slides. Five of these slides are quizzes. The preview works perfectly until I insert an mp4 video. Then, when it gets to slide 7, the graphics in the software simulation begin to look choppy, as if I were having memory issues. You can see the text being entered into a field, for instance, but you can't see all of the rest of the screen. The audio from the mp4 file periodically skips.

I've tried it without any other applications open, but it still does this.

Is there a setting, or something I should do to improve the quality of video presentations?

Importing Word 2010 - Style and Image Problems

This week we upgraded to Word 2010. I don't know if anyone else experienced this problem, but if you use shapes you may be in trouble if you import documents into Robohelp.

Apparently Microsoft changed the shapes with this version. If you look at the two images below, the top shape is a Word 2007 shape, and the bottom shape is a Word 2010 shape. Notice how ragged the new shape is - it's as if it's in a much lower resolution.

I did some testing and found out that the shape retains its clarity if you save it in Word as HTML, and then import it. For this reason it looks like Adobe is going to need to address how to import 2010 shapes without messing them up during the conversion process. In the meantime, that's the fix - unless anyone else has any thoughts.

Stylesheets vs. HTML files

I've always imported Word documents and attached stylesheets. Now I'm importing HTML documents, but the stylesheets don't work on them. The styles that display in the Style window have the characteristics of the original Word document (saved as HTML) even though I've attached the same stylesheet to this file that's on every other file in the project. The rest of the files display correctly.

Is there some way to fix this?

Security issues in interactive PDFs

We upgraded to Windows 7 yesterday. This problem first came up today. I created interactive forms in Acrobat, with digital signatures. Before the upgrade the forms worked. Since the upgrade, I get an error message when I launch the file in Reader and attempt to type text into the fields or click on the digital signature tag. I verified that the file has a setting of No Security. Should I report this as a bug? Or is there a fix now?

Security Settings in Robohelp 9 PDF files

I think this is a Robohelp problem because it only happens when I launch a PDF from a Robohelp-generated site. It does NOT happen in Adobe Acrobat. It may be a conflict with Windows 7 - we just loaded it yesterday - because before that everything worked.

We created a PDF file with interactive fields, and NO security settings. The file has signature fields that populate with your digital ID when you click the red tag. It works just fine in Acrobat - you can type data into the fields, and the digital ID dialog launches when you click the red tag. If you click OK, the field displays your digital signature.

However, when I launch the file from online help I created with Robohelp 9, I get an error message stating that the security settings on the document don't allow adding text or placing a signature on it. I double checked, and there is NO security. See the attached images. Is this a bug? Should I report it?

Orphan Baggage Files

There's a folder under Project Manager for broken links. However, I couldn't find any way to identify baggage files that topics no longer link to. Is there an easy way to do this so I can remove them? They all look the same in the Baggage Files folder.

Yesterday we upgraded to Version 9.0.2. Today my stylesheets don't work.

I rely very heavily on stylesheets because my company has two divisions with two separate brandings. Every day I have to import the same document to two separate projects, and apply the appropriate stylesheet so it publishes in the right colors for that division.

I tested multiple Word documents, multiple projects and multiple stylesheets. As soon as you apply ANY stylesheet, the topic loses all formatting. That means I have to manually apply the styles to every line of text.

Is there a quick fix to this that will get me through today? I have topics I need to publish.

RH9 Files don't get renamed when you rename the project

I need to change the names of a couple of projects. I went to File > Rename Project, and changed one of their names. I selected the new name to display in the header, and told Robohelp to create a new directory with the new name.

As I'm looking in the project, I noticed that the names of the Default Index and the Default TOC have not changed.

Where do I go to change these?

PDF causes Robohelp 9 to crash

Can you think of what elements might cause a PDF file to crash Robohelp every time I try to compile the help and publish?

I downloaded an Excel calendar template from microsoft.com. The formulas update the dates in the month areas when you select the year from a dropdown menu. Nothing too fancy, but kind of cool.

I rearranged the months around a little bit, used a custom font, and inserted the company logo.jpg. I set the print area to only print the calendar, NOT the dropdown, then saved it as a PDF. I uploaded it as a baggage file, and attached it to a topic. All is very normal. Then I compile and get an message telling me that Robohelp 9 encountered an error. When I click for more information, I get this - it goes on for days. I just copied the first page.

So I closed down other software, made sure no PDF files displayed in the live version on the server I was publishing to, removed the custom font, deleted the image, and tried some other diddling, but nothing worked. When I remove that file, the project compiles just fine.

Does anyone have any other thoughts? The next thing I'm going to do is try a different template, but I'm wondering if, after all my customization, I can still use this one somehow.

RH9 Color of Visited Hyperlinks

I'm beginning to wonder if my Robohelp went corrupt. I previously posted an issue I have with highlighting colors not staying after I set them. They randomly revert to gray, and I don't know why. I have to keep going back to reset the color, and it usually takes me three or four tries before it sticks. Now I'm having an issue setting the color of visited hyperlinks.

I know I set the color once and it worked, but now I have to change it and I can't. I have followed the instructions in help, and recompiled, and republished any number of times. I right click the .css file in the Project Manager and select Edit. I change the color in the Styles dialog. That is the only set of instructions that appears in Adobe help,

Could there be some hidden control somewhere that overrides this command? Could the culprit be Word? I import my documents from Word. Please advise what you think.

RH9 PowerPoint Slideshows - is this a Microsoft or Adobe question?

I've already posted this to the Microsoft forum, but it occurred to me that there might be something in Robohelp that I haven't tried.

PowerPoint .ppsx files are supposed to launch as read-only slideshows. However, the link in the published Robohelp project launches PowerPoint (I don't know what happens for people who don't have PowerPoint) and the file is a standard, editable PowerPoint presentation, instead of a slideshow. I don't know how to fix this - I'm almost to the point of saving the presentations as PDF files.

Does anyone know what I should do?

RH9 Search highlighting color won't stick

When you use the Search feature and select "Highlight search results" the default color is gray. The word or phrase you're searching for displays in gray in all the topics in your search results.

From a usability standpoint, gray is a really bad color for highlighting. People are used to yellow, so if they saw that they would know what it means. Other colors would also send the correct message. But I kept getting emails from people asking me what's wrong with the online help because their screen was peppered with gray splotches.

So I went in and changed the highlighting color in the Webhelp > Search > Search Options dialog. All was well, until the next time I compiled the project. The color choice reverted to gray. Apparently you must go in and make your color choice EVERY TIME you update a project. If Adobe had chosen any color but gray as the default, I'd just leave it.

This is a problem because my project consists of one parent and about 20 child projects. I went in and changed the search highlighting color in all 21 projects, only to learn that the ones I'd since updated were displaying their highlights in gray. So users were getting blue highlights in some search results topics, and gray in others. It shouldn't do this.

If there's a fix, please advise.

"Go" Button in Search Window

I created a new project with a different skin. I can't seem to locate where to go to attach the "Go" button to the search field in the search window. I've compared the WebHelp Skin Editor and the WebHelp Settings in the Single Source Layouts, and I'm not seeing what is different. Where is the field that lets me upload an image to that window?

FTP Option isn't working RH9

We noticed that the files appear to go through, when we published to an FTP site. The GUI shows progress, and but when we later checked the server, the files were not there. As a test we deleted all files and directories off the server and started again. After it looked completed no files were on the server. We had to publish to the server using a batch file. Is this a bug? We selected Republish All on the Publish settings.

RH9 Conditional Tags Not Working

Conditional build tags worked before, and now do not. I've gone down the checklist of things, and can't figure out what's wrong, or what I may have done to shut them off.

When I right click the topic in the Topic List tag, then click Properties>Advanced, the Internal Website condition is appropriately checked. The Broker Website condition is not. When I publish them, the topic displays on both servers, not just the one I checked.

I've clicked Republish All to make sure that every single file gets published, just to be certain the condition goes out there. Still nothing.

The topic has that green highlighting on the TOC, so Robohelp believes a condition was applied to it.

Here's what I changed, since it worked:

I changed the publishing path for the Broker Website project - the one that shouldn't display the topic. The new directory displays the topic (inappropriately). The old directory with the old files still does not (appropriately), when I launch the project from there.
I began publishing the project to both servers at the same time, instead of separately, which I did during the initial test. However, when I watch the file upload dialog, and check the timestamps in the directory, the files are going to the appropriate places. When I unchecked an upload and published the paths separately, it still doesn't work anymore.
I changed the name of the condition for the Broker Website. However, I never checked that box - the name for the Internal Website condition remains the same, and that is the only project that counts in this test, because internal topics shouldn't be published to that site. This shouldn't matter, but I'm including it because I changed it.
I deleted the topic and put it back, going through every one of the conditional tag steps, then republishing.

Are there any other variables I overlooked? Please help!!

RH9 Relative Paths

I have to publish my project to two separate servers. One of these is a secure HTTPS server, accessed by auditors. It's a parent/child project, which requires links between different child projects. I can't do this within Robohelp, so I have been hard coding the hyperlink to the published URL for that topic on the non-secure server.

However, the auditors will NOT have access to the non-secure HTTP server, which means the hard coded links will be dead for them. I would like to use relative paths so that I can link between the various child projects on any server, but I can't get them to work, no matter what syntax I use.

How can I do this?
