Looking for a file placement solution in Illustrator cc

I'm currently using Illustrator cc from the cloud and unable to retain links to placed tiff files after closing the Illustrator file. There have been a few times when the link works, then for some reason the link embeds itself at a later opening. I have wasted an enormous amount of time on this problem. Who ever signed off on Quality Check of this program really dropped the ball. Looking for a real solution to this problem. Please no theories.
