Testing AdobeRGB1998/ProPhoto 8bit/16bit

Having read about the color working space whereby ProPhoto has a higher gamit and 8 bit/16bit showing a huge difference in info contained within it. I wanted to see for myself the results. Since the difference I see on the web is minimal at best and actually often I couldn't really see the results on the monitor. And because of this I will assume the same will happen to you so hopefully you can download the images yourself and see them on your own computer.

For all intents and purposes something edited to some extreme should show better results when worked on ProPhoto 16 bit compared to AdobeRGB 1998 on 8 bit. Well I was surprised at my results.

What I did is:

Take a raw image and convert to ProPhoto 16 bit

Take the same image and leave it at AdobeRGB 1998 on 8 bit

With both images I then cropped them approximately the same place and then used the levels adjustment with exactly the same numbers (moving the highlights to the right and the shadows to the left). Next I went to the layers panel and flattened the image.I then save each both as a psd and jpg.

I assumed that the results would show the 16bit ProPhoto hgaving more details across the board--at least that is what I read everywhere and based on this, logically it should results as such.

But it was not the case. The 8bit Adobe RGG 1998 showed more details in the shadows and the ProPhoto showed more details in the highlights (and to some degree the midtones--hard for me to tell if its more detail or just more contrast-looking)

Take a look and tell me what you think please--or explain. :-) (photo 1: 8bit -- photo 2: 16bit)

Seeking method to change what is displayed in Filter-->Focal length

When in Bridge under the Filter tab-->Focal length what I have listed is 5mm, 5.8mm, 6mm, 6.2mm, 6.3mm, 6.5mm etc. etc. and the list goes on and on. The conclusion being that this list is way too lo0ng to serve as a good filter to me.

I sold all of my lenses 2 years ago and replaced them with one zoom lens (and at times a pocket camera also with a zoom). I couldn't care less if the photo was taken at 6mm or 6.2mm. To me they are just about the same thing. However, I would like it if it actually game me a range say 5mm-10mm; 10.1 mm-15mm etc. Now the filter makes sense to me being more manageable. Is there any way of making it so?

In other words I no longer want to see:

5.8mm,

6mm,

6.2mm,

6.3mm,

6.5mm

But would like instead to see:

5mm--10mm

10.1mm--15mm

15.1mm--20mm

Which are in increments of 5, BUT, increments of 10 would be fine as well or even better.

Thank you

How to combine Camera-Raw processed files to be viewed within Windows Explorer as processed

The problem I have with camera processed files is that when viewed within Explorer what you did on the file, the crop, and other effects are not visible within Windows Explorer. What is visible there is the original file--this seems to be true of the original nef file in my case. The change does appear if you save it as a .tif, .dng or .psd but not the NEF. But if you were to open again the NEF file and the RAW Window opens you can see your changes immediately.

I know it is because with an original raw file nothing has been done to the image except give it instructions so to speak but Bridge does see it as such so why not let Explorer (Or other viewers, for ex. XnView) view it as such as well? Perhaps this is more a Microsoft Windows issue or what-have-you but I thought I would start to present it here first.

Where's the question? The question is not actually for someone to explain why this is so, I think I may understand this a little but rather the question is, would it be possible to let other software such as Explorer see the raw processed file--to let it see it as Bridge sees it? Yeah I guess this may be a Windows issue but.....

Why does this bother me? Since I don't use Photoshop or Bridge professionally I view images more often in Explorer then I do in Bridge or PS (The former is instantaneously viewable while the latter take way to long to open--and Bridge vs. XnView needs an extra step.)

Side note: Sometimes I feel I am wasting my time and yours in writing such silly questions nevertheless they present themselves in my brain and in the process I hope to learn something from it regardless of its silliness/stupidity. It is such questions which at times creates something original, therefore creativity, after all, does it not? (Or so I tell myself in order to justify it all :-)

You could see each number on the bottom of the page. As is you have on the top left corner which pge you're on based on the toal pages, for ex. 7 / 49 If you happen to be on page 7 on a total of 49 pages. Assume now you delete the numbered page 7. What you have now is still page 7 showing on the top left corner but on the actual pdf it is page 8. My question is, assuming it is possible, to make that top corner equal to the actual page. In other words page 7, in this example would nevber show up on the top left corner since it no longer exists. Or to put it in other words, what is on top must equal the actual page number on the document at all tiimes, and preferable do this automatically each time a page is deleted (which I do often, quite often)

Thank you

It seems that the filter panel is folder specific. You click on a folder and only some filters pop up depending on what folder you are looking at and what info is in the photos (I don't know if this refers to tags or not). Assuming I am right. This is my problem. I go to my main folder where all other folders and subfolder with photos within them are placed. I want to look at my "Ratings" 5 starts, 4 stars and so forth. In other words I am looking for (searching for), in this case, all those photos I have labeled with 5 stars. But no such tab/filter exists in my main folder. Why? How do I perform such a task(look for all 5-star photos I have--and also zero stars, those yet to be labelled)?

OS: WIndows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Thank you

Why does Bridge open raw files (ndg) in Raw window even though the 'Open in Photoshop' option is...

After having worked on my raw NEF files I save it to dng. My thinking behind this, is that I alreay have done what was needed and would now like to start working on it within Photoshop. It seems that the only way to automatically open it directly within PS is if I save it as a tiff, psd or jpg. But since this is not what I want to do then why must I add extra steps as opposed to just opening it hwere I want. I mean the 2 choices are there, so why not do what it is being asked?

Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?

I appear to be very wrong. Why are 'saved as' .psd files so much bigger than original raw nef files?

I'm beginning to think that saving them as psd is a bad idea.

Yes, though I've heard all the arguments of keepng the original raw files (For ex. Did you throw away the negatives when you were using film) I se eno purpose in keeping them. Once I've made the initial adjustments--cropping, color correction etc. I don't feel a need to ever go back and never do. Most of my work is done in Photoshop and I like it that way--but suddenly finding myself with such huge files doesn't appeal to me at all--and other formats like tif...well never mind for now.

Trying to Understand Color Management

Actually I could not come up with a title short enough to describe my question and even this one is not too good. Here goes: The more I read about Color Management the more I understand but also the more I get confused so I thouht the best way for me to understnand is perhaps for me to ask the question my way for my situation.

I do not own an expensve monitor, I'd say middle of the road. It is not calibrated by hardware or any sophisticated method. I use a simple software and that's it. As to my printer it isn't even a proper Photo filter. My editing of photos is mainly for myself--people either view my photos on the net or on my monitor. At times I print photos on my printer and at times I print them at a Print Shop. My philosophy is this. I am aware that what I see on my monitor may not look the same on someone else's monitor, and though I would definitely like if it it were possible, it doesn't bother me that much. What I do care about is for my photos to come close enough to what I want them to be on print. In other words when the time comes for me to get the best colors possible from a print. Note here that I am not even that concerned with color accuracy (My monitor colors equalling print colors since I know I would need a much better monitor and a calibrated one to do so--accurately compare) but more rather concerned with color detail. What concerns me, is come that day when I do need to make a good print (or afford a good monitor/printer) then I have as much to work with as possible. This leads me to think that therefore working with ProPhoto RGB is the best method to work with and then scale down according to needs (scale down for web viewing for example). So I thought was the solution, but elsewhere I read that using ProPhoto RGB with a non-pro monitor like mine may actually works against me, hence me getting confused, not understanding why this would be so and me coming here. My goal, my objective is this: Should I one day want to print large images to present to a gallery or create a book of my own then I want my photos at that point in time to be the best they can be--the present doesn't worry me much .Do I make any sense?

BTW if it matters any I have CS6.

I was wondering where I can get information as to what I should do about it--the choices given. For example there is an "All Profiles" tab whereby I could 'Add' a profile. How would I do so and why? What seems more important though is the 'Advanced' tab whereby the choices are many. In seeing this I thought that perhaps there is much to learn and someone here could link me to somewhere whereby I could get more info and learn what all those settings are all about. Of course I also wouldn't mind, as a starting point, if someone could give me a general idea of what it's all about either.

I did the following: -1- Created a 2nd layer -2 used quick selection tool on my main subject ( a person) and named it. -3- deselected the selection -4- Edit menu --> Content aware scale -5- resized it to something smaller (chose my previous named selection channel). -6- Pressed "Enter"

The result is that I can now see 2 images; the smaller sitting on the larger. What now? All I want is the smaller image. If I throw away the original layer what I end up is the new layer with the white and gray default background showing as part of the image (which ends up being printed as well or if saved looking as is with the grey-white. Is what I should do the obvious--cut out via cropping the un-needed (gray-white) part? Or am I missing a step somewhere?

Thank you

How to create a 'Previous History' brush tool along with content aware

You could use the 'history brush' tool to brush away part of the new insert and erase what is there to reveveal what was there. How do you do the same thing to image A which now sits on B (to reveal what was there on A originally). What I mean is this. I moved a person from point A to point B. but parts of this person are missing (his ear, his knee, his shoe) so how do I get those parts back (in the new location)?

The history brush tool appears to be erasing by subtracting, what I would like to do in this case of course is not subtract but add or 're-add'.

Thank you

I got the idea here somewhere to rename such files by adding " _sm " this way being able to distinguish from the two when doing a search. In batch renaming something strange happened:some files did not keep their extension. How could this be and why? There was also no undo (Why?) so i decided to rename them once again this time replacing the "_sm" with ".jpg" in order to fool Bridge and place the files back to their original names and extensions.

Anyhow is there a reason why it would not keep the extension on some files while keep it on others? Since it's doing this in batch, therefore processing many files at once there's gotta be a reason why it would not treat all files as equals and I'm thinking that perhaps it has something to do with how I name my files.

Thank you

How does this software work: I don't understand the hype

Hi there

Time and again I read how photographers love Ligtroom. How it is the in between Photoshop and Lightroom and a must have if you are serious about photography. Another thing I know is that, even those who have limited computer knowledge can begin to explore any given software knowing that some things seem to be constant. For example one can go to their software and click on 'FIle,' or 'Edit' and they will be given some options as to what they can do from there ("File --> Save As" or "Edit --> Undo". No rocket science involved. Another thing they can do is go their their side bar, for example Explorer and choose a folder and then a subfolder and take over from there (look at what is there). And lastly, most software makes their writing, be it the word 'File' or the name of your folder visible enough to read. So to all you Lightroom lovers please explain why you love this software so much whereby none of this seems possible from the word go?

I opened LR after having installed it and realized that just about everything is very hard to read--Grey on black really??? Isn't this just about against everything we learned in graphics classes or photography? Also, I have on my left panel chosen my folder (and subfolders) where all my pix are and yet I can't click on any of my folders or their subs--nothing but absolutely nothing happens: What are they doing there then? As I look/go up I see File and Edit and Library etc (again black on dark grey, really?) and none of them either can be clicked on--What the f----???? And then there is the word "Import". What is this all about? My files are already in folders and subfolders what or why do I need to import anything?

Which brings me to the beginning of this discussion: Is there a viable reason why I need to learn stuff from scratch whereby every other software in the world doesn't require you to do so?

Please excuse the anger (if shown). I've been an Adobe (and Photoshop) fan from day one but from a few years ago when I first tried Lightroom I gave up on it quite quickly for these reason given above. If anybody can shed light on it I would truly appreciate it. Though admitedly quite impatient, I consider myself quite smart and this software makes me feel stupid (something I really don't like).

Thank you

Yes, I know 'Date taken' does not change--but this info does not show up when you hover a file only the info in its properties does hence me asking the question.

Also am I correct in assuming that this conversion is 100% lossless, nothing but nothing is lost in the qualtiy and info of the file (besides the file size)?
How to connect metadata automatically as a filter for keywords?

Under my metadata I already have things such as Country and City put in or a label such as Family. I would like to be able to use my Filter/Keywords tab to find files that are already labelled as such from my metadata. For example of China or of my sister. As I understand Bridge to be now the only way I can use the filter is for me to go to each file and start adding keywords such as country, etc. BUT I already have them under my metadata; is there no way of just making whatever is under the 'Metadata' tab for say, Country-China to appear as part of my keyword?

Or let me put it in other words, just in case my exaplanation was not good. Under my metadata tab on the right-hand side and under the 'Country' listing I have about 500 photos that say USA and about half those under 'State/Provice' say Florida , and about 500 that say Italy. These labels are not labelled under "Keywords' tab but under the Metadata tab. So if I I want to quickly search for and see only those that say Italy, what do I do? If I understand Bridge correctly, as things are now there is no way of me finding just the Italy pictures since there are no photos that have been given 'Italy' as a key word? Am I correct? If I am corerct then to begin to add keywords to all of my thousands of photos will take forever. Certainly there must be a better way since they have already been labelled under 'Metadata" Thank you.

What is the difference between 'new layer' and 'duplicate layer'?

I know like any other software, imaging or not, new means blank--nothing on it. While duplicate, by definition would say it is a double--a clone. This to me does not answer the question. To answer one would have to tell me what one can do with a new layer that can or can not be done with a duplicate--or the other way around. When or why would one use a new layer and when or why would one use a duplicate layer? Just to drive you great Photoshop users nuts, and hate me some (sorry) let me give you an idea of what kind of Photoshop user I have been for the past 10 years or so. Not undertsnading layers, every time a layer was created (through no want of my own), I would always flatten the image so I could continue with my work. I hated all those popups telling me I coudn't do this or that because I was on the wrong layer, or there was nothing there or what-have-you. "Not there"???? To me if I could see it then it is there. What is not there is what I can't see, in other words I 'can't see' the fact that I am now working on a 2nd layer (except if I look to the side at my history or something) so therefore that 'layer' is not there. Now that you have an idea of what kind of 'idiot' user I am and have been I hope you can excuse me and show patience with my ignorance. Thanks in advance. If you are really ambitious and patient you can also add what/why re: 'copy' layer to the definiton and uses.

Since I only have Adobe Reader, would it be possible to password protect that file using Reader (Not to open the file just to prevent others from modifying it)?

Thank you

Mich

photoshop cs 5 misreading RAM memory

I thought this would make stuff got at super speeds but to my surprise it actually fel slower.

I went to --> Preferences --> Performance and checked my meory useage and my problem seemed obvious. That is Photoshop does not show that I have added memeory and thinks I only have 4 Gigs. How can this be? How can I let Photoshop know I have more memory than what it thinks I have?

Thanks in advance

mich

OS: Windows 7 Premium 64 bit

Photoshop CS5 32/64 bit

Acrobat 9 Pro extended 64-bit add-on uninstall crashes

My windows 7 64 bit computer seems to reboot itself. I've located the problem to possibly be with Acrobat.

When I then tried to unistall "Accrobat 9 Pro extended 64-bit add-on" the computer crashes--straight to black screen and rebooting. I tried to uninstall it in safe mode but windows t pops up with a window telling me some uninstall file is missing.

Any suggestions outside of reinstalling the OS.?

Thanks in advance
