Acrobat Pro XI for Mac crashed and now says trial is over

Earlier today I downloaded and installed Acrobat Pro XI for Mac on my MacBook Pro Retina 15-inch early 2013 running OS X 10.9.4. I compared two documents. While skimming the comparison document, Acrobat seemed unstable, e.g. when I tried to select text to copy Acrobat would freeze and show the spinning pinwheel for a minute or two. When I finished skimming the comparison, I closed the file, and clicked "don't save," it crashed. When I restarted Acrobat, it told me the evaluation period was over.

Captivate 7 for Mac. Vertical lines appear between characters in typed text in both SWF and HTML5. No problem in exported video.

I'm not resizing.

Which newbie mistakes to avoid with Captivate?

I'm about to create a dozen or so demos using Captivate's Software Simulation mode. I'd like to get started right so that I don't have to go back and redo the early ones to make them look consistent and professional.

For example, I realized today that I should have chozen a window size so that they'll all look consistent and I can use the same title and end graphics on all of them.

Any suggestions of other newbie mistakes to avoid?

Possible to turn off capture of "Click the …" captions and highlight boxes?

Using Captivate 7 for Mac's Software Simulation mode, with the particular web application I'm using, the "Click the …" captions are rarely useful and the highlight boxes are confusing clutter.

Is it possible to disable those from capture? I can't find such options in the UI or online help.

Alteratively, is there a way to delete them all globally after capture?

Which RoboHelp 9 files belong in source control?

I have a new RoboHelp 9 project. All source is in FrameMaker 10. Only layout I'm using is Printed Documentation.

I'd like to check the RoboHelp 9 project files into source control (cvs). I don't want to waste space by checking in generated files.

Which files besides the .xpj and the .dot file do I need to include?

I'm using RoboHelp 9 as an intermediate format to convert FrameMaker 10 source to old-school 7-bit ASCII text with layout. The whole path is FrameMaker > RoboHelp > Word 2010 > Save as MS-DOS Text with Layout. I have this working with MIF2Go but want to switch it to RoboHelp since that's what the company owns.

The FrameMaker doc's page layout is 8.5" x 11" with .25" margins (8" text column). The text is Courier New 12.

The Word document generated by RoboHelp has 1" margins. Where can I change that?

Installing CS2 on Windows 7 64-bit

My company owns Illustrator as part of CS2. The guy who edited the Illustrator files has left, so I needed to install it on my PC. I didn't find a post that described all the steps I had to do to get it to work, so I'm posting my notes.

1. Download the updated installer from http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/ to c:\cs2inst.

2. Run CreativeSuiteCS2Disc1.exe. This will put the contents of CD 1 at C:\Creative Suite CS2.

3. Do the same for discs 2, 3, and Extras, which will add more files to C:\Creative Suite CS2. Disc 2 had trouble finding that directory, I browsed to and selected it and it worked.

4. Run C:\Creative Suite CS2\Adobe Creative Suite 2.0\setup.exe.

5. Follow the defaults to install in the usual manner until prompted for Installation Location. Enter c:\adobecs2, click Browse, browse to c:\, create c:\adobecs2, and select it. (I found a tip to use c:\progra~2, which is the short name for "c:\Program Files (x86)", but the installer complained that the directory was read-only.)

6. Complete instalation as usual.

easy way to import HTML into unstructured FrameMaker?

I occasionally need to take content from a MindTouch wiki and add it to a FrameMaker doc. The wiki source is very basic HTML: h2, h3, p, strong, ul, ol, tables, that's about it.

Is there a tool that will convert HTML to FrameMaker or MIF? Sort of the reverse of RoboHelp / WebWorks / MIF2Go?

I can paste and reformat but it takes a lot of time and it's really annoying when I have to do it again after edits.

TCS 3.5, source in FrameMaker 10, linked to RoboHelp 9 to generate WebHelp.

I have a large inherited project that somebody long ago set up to use RoboHelp-generated TOC anchors (e.g. TOC_Introduction) for context-sensitive help calls.

I want to create TopicAlias markers in the FrameMaker source and use standard help calls. However, when I look at the existing RoboHelp project, the Map ID file has over a thousand entries, apparently one for every topic in the TOC. Where could those be coming from? I can't find a setting that would generate them.

How to copy FrameMaker conversion settings from one RoboHelp project to another?

Constant errors in Adobe Acrobat X Pro 10.1.5

I have Acrobat X Pro as part of TCS 3.5, running Windows 7 64-bit SP1.

Last week I started getting constant errors "There was an error during initialization. Failed to load an application resource (internal error)." Eventually Acrobat became unusable, so I used the Repair option in the Windows Programs and it worked OK. This morning the errors are back.

I build WebHelp from linked FM10 source using RH9 using a batch file that runs an ExtendScript. This works fine, except it launches a second instance of FM10 and leaves it open. That's no big deal but if possible I'd like to modify the script to close FM10. Possible?

Zapf Dingbats bad font replacement in FM10

FM10 unstructured, Windows 7 64-bit, working with documents I inherited in which a Zapf Dingbats character tag was used for bullets in paragraph tags.

Opening one of those documents gives the message, "The 'Zapfdingbats' Font is not available. It will be replaced by 'AdobePiStd'." Bullets appear as question marks.

ZapfDingbats BT is installed and appears in the FM font menus. If I change the Bullet character tag from Adobe Pi Std to ZapfDingbats BT, the bullets look right.

The conversion is set in maker.ini as follows:

Zapfdingbats, *,*= Adobe Pi Std,*,*

I tried deleting that line, had no effect. I tried replacing it with the following, had no effect:

Is there some system-level way to fix this? It would be annoying to have to update the style in every document.

font change not appearing in Autonumber

FM10, Windows 7 64-bit. Inherited documents, template has evolved over maybe 15 years so there's a lot of legacy cruft.

I have a Bullet1 paragraph tag. Its Autonumber Format is l\t (that's a lowercase L before the backslash). The Character Format for the autonumber is Bullet. The font for the Bullet character tag was once upon a time Zapf Dingbats but it gets remapped to Adobe Pi Std.

On my predecessor's machine, Bullet1 had a round bullet, maybe because he had a different Zapf Dingbats, I don't know (machine has been wiped so I can't check it). On my machine, instead of a bullet there's a question mark.

I was unable to get font mapping to work (see "Zapf Dingbats bad font replacement in FM10" thread) so I hacked Adobe Pi Std to add the bullet glyph from Zapf Dingbats BT Regular and map it to l. (For future reference, I had to reboot before the font change was active.)

If I type an l and format it with the Bullet character tag, it appears as a bullet, but Bullet1 still has a question mark in place of a bullet.

Suggestions?

FrameMaker 10 UI bugs - workarounds?

I've been using FrameMaker 10 (unstructured) heavily for the first time and started keeping a list of the UI bugs I encounter regularly. I'm on Windows 7, 64-bit, single 1650 x 1050 display. I don't have any of the following problems with any of the many other applications I use.

1. Document window size and position are not saved.

2. Docked panels often appear behind the document window, and I have to resize or close the document window to use them. Since window size and position are not saved, I have to resize them dozens of times a day.

3. Sometimes I have the opposite problem: the side of a window is completely blocked by the character or paragraph tag catalog, so I have to minimize, close, or move the panel before I can resize the window.

4. When I open a panel, sometimes it appears behind another panel that's already open, and I have to move one or the other before I can use it.

5. The first time I press Ctrl-f, I can just type the search string, but after that the focus within the Find/Change seems to be random, so I can't.

6. After a book has been open for a while, it no longer responds to menu commands. I can double-click files to open them or use the right-click menu, but if I try to select a menu command such as Edit > Update Book or File > Save As PDF the book window minimizes and is no longer active. The only workaround I've found is to close and reopen the book window.

7. A separate FrameMaker button appears on the taskbar for each file that's open.

8. The FrameMaker console window appears behind the application window. Bringing it to the front is sometimes difficult.

9. When I first start FrameMaker, Ctrl-F6 switches between open windows. After a while, it stops working.

10. Alt-key menu letters are not displayed for all menu commands (e.g. Documents on the Window menu).

11. If I Alt-Tab to FrameMaker from another application, pressing Alt-Tab again takes me to another FrameMaker document window (if more than one document is open) instead of back to the other application.

Can a cross-reference link expand the target book?

When I click a link to Appendix C, the first page of Appendix C is loaded, but Appendix B book expands in the Contents pane.

iterative loop to create cross-references

I'd like to write a script to create a list of cross-references for all paragraphs with a certain paragraph tag in the current .fm file. Is that possible?

(I would use a generated list of paragraphs (.lop file), but RoboHelp 9 doesn't convert the hyperlinks correctly when generating WebHelp.)

I inherited a FrameMaker 10 / Robohelp 9 project, all source in FrameMaker, RoboHelp is used only to generate WebHelp.

I'm working on cleaning up a nonstandard CSH implementation.

I auto-mapped All Map IDs to the default BSSCdefault.h, which is selected in the WebHelp layout properties, but when I generate I don't find any of the strings from BSSCdefault.h in the output.

Do topics get mapped only when there's a TopicAlias marker in the FrameMaker source?

Synchronize Table of Contents Automatically not expanding TOC tree

Users tell me that some years ago context-sensitive help would expand the TOC tree and select the target topic. Current behavior (RH9) is the "book" is selected but not expanded.

Is there some way to get the old behavior back?

Chrome displaying raw HTML

Our WebHelp works fine in Firefox and, usually, in IE, but Chrome was displaying raw HTML instead of rendering it.

One of the developers figured out the issue was with the DOS/Windows-style CR/LF newlines RoboHelp generates. If we convert them to UNIX-style newlines, Chrome works fine.

I previously encountered an issue where that interfered with checking files into CVS and logged a feature request that RoboHelp support UNIX-style newlines for WebHelp.

You would not encounter the problem if your Web server automatically converted non-UNIX newlines.

Topic sort utility or procedure?

I have a 250-page command reference document with 400 topics in alphabetical order by command name (Heading 1 tag). The commands have been renamed so I need to resort. Are there utilities that can automate that?

If not, any ideas for how to do this most efficiently? I'm thinking of extracting a list of the commands from the source code, creating a new .fm doc with them as headings, and pasting the content in topic by topic, but that's a lot of mind-numbing scut work.

There are lots of tables and other formatting so exporting to another format, sorting, and importing back would be challenging.

Might as well ask the same question about DITA. I'm gearing up to write a bunch of new docs and am considering switching to XML. Since we already own FrameMaker, I'll use that if there's no good reason to switch.

How does Apply CSH Marker (on the RoboHelp menu in FrameMaker) work? The help is kind of vague on the subject. I tried using the command but it didn't seem to create a marker and there was nothing added to BSSCDefault.h in RoboHelp.

What do I need to add to force a book update?

It looked to me as if it were doing that, but I just noticed that the build date variable in the front matter is updated only when I manually update the book.

how to merge two RoboHelp projects?

How can I merge two projects in RoboHelp 9? Project A uses FrameMaker source and project B was authored in RoboHelp HTML.

One of my predecessors for some reason set things up so that the project B output is copied to the WebHelp output from project A, so links from A to B work, but project B's topics aren't included in the search.

Ideally I'd like to just copy the source directories from B to A. I don't want to have to manually add each of the 427 files. The project B files do not need to appear in the TOC.

I followed the instructions in this video to import an XHTML file generated by RoboHelp:

First I had to switch to structured mode, unstructured FrameMaker doesn't know what to do with the file.

When I open it in structured mode, I get the error "Validation of XML file failed. Continue?"

I exported a RoboHelp 9 project to .docx and imported it into FrameMaker 10. I've tried various settings and the results are pretty dreadful, among many other things text in table cells seems to be set to zero points. It looks decent in Word, it's the import to FrameMaker where things go wrong. Any suggestions on how to improve things?

converting RoboHelp or HTML to FrameMaker

I've inherited a >1000-page FrameMaker doc that's delivered as PDF and RoboHelp-generated WebHelp. The RoboHelp project has no content other than the FrameMaker book.

Some of the content was not turning up in searches. On investigation, it appears that one of my predecessors wrote that stuff in RoboHelp rather than in FrameMaker. Then, for reasons lost to history, instead of continuing to use that RoboHelp project, the FrameMaker doc was revised to include a table with links to around 650 generated HTML pages (HyperText markers with "message URL ../../<path>/<filename>.html"). There are two versions of the table, distinguished by conditional text, one with the links for WebHelp and one without the links for PDF.

I found the RoboHelp source, so I presume I can integrate it with the main RoboHelp project. On the other hand, I plan to switch from RoboHelp to MIF2Go, so it would be only a temporary solution.

I know the usual approach for converting RoboHelp to FrameMaker is RH > Word > FM, but in this particular situation I wonder if there might be a better alternative.

Any other approaches to conversion I should consider?

Is it possible to configure RoboHelp to generate a single XHTML file for all topics instead of splitting them?

Can't resize WebHelp window in IE9

All of a sudden my WebHelp can't be resized in IE9, that is, it's a fixed size. The Mazimize / Restore button is disabled and the drag icon does not appear when I hover the mouse over the window border.

This happens only in IE and only when loading the help from the server (Tomcat). If I open the help locally, there's no problem. If I open the help from the server using Firefox, there's no problem.

Anybody seen this before?

RH script: updateAll(true) does not add new file to TOC

I use this script to update my RoboHelp project from FrameMaker source before generating WebHelp:

I have a FrameMaker ExtendScript that sets conditional text for PDF, updates the book, generates PDF, sets conditional text for online help, and updates the book. It's a minor variation on<FM10_INSTALL_DIR>\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\Conditional Text\FM_Outputs_CondText.jsx.

This morning I noticed that the PDF had no bookmarks. I ran the script again and this time, as usual, the bookmarks were there.

Any ideas of what variables could have caused FrameMaker / Distiller to leave out the bookmarks? I have not changed any preferences in FrameMaker. The default printer was and is set to Adobe PDF. I have not made any changes to the FrameMaker project.

TCS 3.5, FrameMaker 10 and Acrobat X Pro with all updates, Windows 7 64-bit.

script leaves FrameMaker file locked

The following script updates the specified RoboHelp project with any changes to the FrameMaker source. It works fine, except it leaves the last .fm file in the book locked (i.e. there's an .lck file in the FrameMaker source dircectory). How can I fix that? Or is this a bug?

How can I start RoboHelp at the end of a FrameMaker script? Specifically I'd like to do that with <FM10_INSTALL_DIR>\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\Conditional Text\FM_Outputs_CondText.jsx.

I found what sees like a bug in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker10\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\Conditional Text\FM_Outputs_Conditional_Text.jsx.

The script produces two PDFs, which I expected to be named <book_name>_Comment_Red.pdf and <book_name>_Blue_Green.pdf.

Instead, they're named <book_name>.book_Comment_Red.pdf and <book_name>.book_Blue_Green.pdf.

The relevant lines seem to be:

FileSource = OpenBook(InputFile);

SavePdf(FileSource,InputFile + OutPutFiles[output_no]);

Is there some way to tweak the second line so as to remove the .book extension from FIleSource? Or to define another variable minus the extension?

I'm trying to automate generation of PDF in FrameMaker 10 and WebHelp from the same source in RoboHelp 9.

I have two scripts that are working, now I'm trying to run them as a single script.

Looking at a discussion about InDesign scripting (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/776832), I thought maybe the following would work:

robohelp.executeScriptFile("c:\\Users\\rlauriston\\Documents\\help_automation\\2_robohelp. jsx")

but when I debug it in ExtendScript Toolkit CS5.5, I get "robohelp is undefined".

Reading Adobe Creative Suite 5 JavaScript Tools Guide, I get the impression that this should work:

Is that possible, and if so, with which tools? The ExtendScript documentation is very sketchy.

I've got a script (discussed in http://forums.adobe.com/message/4297510) that updates FrameMaker source in RoboHelp.

It works, but it's hanging due to a "The font information for your system has changed" error in FrameMaker. It looks like if FrameMaker is not open, RoboHelp changes the printer from Adobe PDF to WebWorks Rasterizer. If I have the FrameMaker book open and the correct printer selected, the script completes properly.

Any suggestions other than calling Adobe support?
