I'd like to run some SWF animations that I create from InDesign. These are to be run on my machine only. I don't want to run them through the browser as I need a full-screen view with no distractions.

I downloaded a projector from the one of the Flash Player pages, but it warned that the files on that page are for developers only. The alternative is to install the Flash Player plug-in for browsers.

I got the download to play the SWF on my screen, but I don't feel comfortable using the software if I'm not a developer.

How can I stay legal?

I am trying to download Captivate to show to a client who wants to use it.

I went to http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=captivate

and chose Mac English.

I got a very small DMG image.

I opened the dmg.

I double clicked the pkg to install. I got an install dialog box.

I agreed to the agreement.

I got a standard install screen.

I was suspicious as 31mb seemed awfully small for a big application. But I clicked Install.

A few seconds later I was told the install was successful.

I looked for Adobe Captivate in my Applications folder. It was not there.

I tried a different browser. I got a fatal error.

I tried the direct download link. Nothing happened. And I've been waiting a long time.

I tried a different browser. Same steps. Same problems.

HELP!

Script to act on all open documents?

cchimi gave me the perfect answer for my FindByList question. Now I would like to know how to set a script so it acts on all open documents. This is similar to the setting in the regular Find/Change to work on all open docs.

I am trying to use the Find/ChangeList.txt file with the Find/ChangeList.jsx in Samples>Javascripts

I would like to set it up that the txt file lists a series of paragraph styles to find and another list to change to.

I tried just one Find/Change to see how it worked. I tried:

Could someone give me the proper format. And please don't tell me about multi-Find/Change or scripts by Kasyan Servetsky or Martin Fisher.

I'm working on a book that references HTML code for things like <div> or <h1>.
 
I have a character style to apply Courier to the codes, but I want to create a GREP style for it.
 
How do I designate the < or > characters to be characters and not indicators of a GREP command?

Using Typekit fonts in print projects

I have just started using a Typekit font for my demonstrations.
 
However, I am interested in using it for my next book but I have questions.
 
Are the Typekit fonts suitable for print production? They are listed as OpenType. Is that ordinary OpenType?
The Typekit fonts don't show up in the Documet Fonts folder when the job is packaged? If I have to send native ID files to my publisher, what would they have to have to edit the job?
Are the fonts embedded in PDF files?
Anyone have any caveats I should know about?

I have CC apps on my main machine. I want to install CC 2014 without losing my CC installation.
 
I'm reluctant to click the "Update" button in the Adobe Update Manager because I don't know what's going to replace what.
 
Where do I go to control the download?



Buttons in an ePub?

I'm embarrased to admit this, but I always thought that buttons could be added to an ePub to prompt various actions. Not all, but applicable ones such as play video, go to next page, go to URL
 
But I'm unable to get them to work, even in ePub 3.0.
 
Can buttons be applied in an ePub?



TypeKit refuses to go away

I don't like the new step that if a font is missing from my system, that TypeKit tries to find the font. I don't want to see that message.
 
I went to Creative Cloud and de-registered from TypeKit.
 
But when I open an old file that has a missing font, TypeKit still pops up.
 
How do I stop this?
 
I really don't want TypeKit in my life.
 
(It's bad enough TypeKit shows up in the Font List and the Type menu.



Hunspell for Hawaiian dictionary?

I'll be going to Hawaii at the end of March for my yearly class at the University of Hawaii. (It's a terrible job, but someone has to do it.)
 
Once again I will be asked if there is a dictionary for the Hawaiian language.
 
I know how to manually add a text file for a list of Hawaiian words.
 
But does anyone know of an official Hunspell dictionary?

Setting the "reasons" for signing in Acrobat XI Pro?

I would like to set the reasons for signing a document in my digital signature. However, I can't find any place that lets me enter that information.
 
For example, I want to enter something like "To confirm my participation"
 
I have found quite a few support docs but they all refer to Acrobat X Security Prefs which are different from Acrobat XI.



Problem getting mail from Adobe Forums

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with this problem:
 
I am subscribed to certain forums under my mac.com email. But I don't get those emails on my MacBook Pro.
 
However, I do get those messages on my iPad and iPhone.
 
The only way I have been able to get forum messages has been to sign in under a gmail account and subscribe.
 
I just spoke to my Internet Service Provider (Time Warner) and they say they are not blocking the forum messages.
 
Is there something in the header of the forum mail that keeps it from getting through to my mail program on OS X?



Trash preferences at startup? Alert or not?

I've had to trash my preferences for Illustrator recently and used the Cmd-Opt-Shift-Ctrl method.
 
I've been a little confused that there wasn't any alert confirming that I wanted to trash the prefs.
 
Can someone confirm that Illustrator DOESN'T give this alert dialog when trashing the prefs?

I just had a look at the membership pricing programs for the Creative Cloud as well as the single application membership, and I was surprised to see I hadn't read all the fine print.
 
I've always thought that a company or person could subscribe to a single application on a month-by-month basis for $20/month. But that's not exactly the truth.
 
If you want to purchase just a single application, such as InDesign, you have to sign up for a full year at $20x12.
 
 
If you must make an annual commitment, then the price is $240/year. The monthly billings are deceptive as there is no way to purchase just one or two month's worth of the product. In fact, it doesn't look like even after the first year you can purchase it in monthly incremements. The committment is annual.
 
Similarly, if you are a company and need to hire a few freelancers for two or three months, you don't get the $50/month price as that also requires an annual committment.
 
 
You only have the $75/month option for one or two months.
 
 
I admit it was my fault in not reading things more closely, but the options feel a little more restrictive now that I understand them.



Drop Cap for the numbers in a list?

I would like to create the following look:
 
 
I want the numbers to be a numbered list for each paragraph.
 
But I am unable to apply the drop cap effect to the numbered list items. Only the first characters of the paragraph become a drop cap.
 
I can create the effect as you see above, but I had to convert the numbers to text.
 
Have I overlooked something that would do it?

Modifying an old script from Dave Saunders

I've gotten permission from Dave Saunders to ask someone here to help modify a script he wrote way back when.

Installation of applications is screwed up

This morning I started working on my auxiliary Mac which I don't use that often. I discovered I had no version of Acrobat XI or X Pro which I thought I did have. These are the steps I took to fix the problem, but now I have another issue.
 
Opened Creative Cloud icon in menu bar, but it said I had Acrobat XI Pro installed and up to date. Also had InDesign CC, Illustrator CC, Photoshop CC.
Ran a complete search on the mac, but there was no Acrobat XI.
Found a folder for Acrobat X uninstaller, but when I tried to open it, I got a message that there is no file for that item.
Went up to Creative Cloud and tried to download the Acrobat XI installer. It wouldn't download. No message But nothing showed up in the downloads folder.
Downloaded the Creative Cloud Cleaer. Cleaned out all the applications.
Restarted the Mac
Downloader Creative Cloud for desktop.
Went to CC icon in menu bar, all the applications were available for download.
Downloaded Acrobat XI, ID, AI, PSD. Opened. They work.
Went upto CC icon in menu bar. Now it says I have not installed any applications yet.
 
It's not vital at the moment that I fix this as I do have applications I can use. But I would like this fixed as this is the machine I use when I travel for demos and woouldn't want something bad to happen on the road.



Underlines of image layers imported from PSD

The above image is the layers panel in Illustrator of a placed PSD file that was imported with the layers maintained.
 
What do the dotted underlines for the two layers mean? Do they just mean they are layers or something else?
 
There were layer masks on those layers in Photoshop, but they were applied to the image so there is a transparency around the image.
 
I understand what has happened to the image, I just don't understand what the dotted lines are supposed to signify.

Why do uploads fail sometimes, and then the same file not fail

I've just gotten to the part where I have to choose Update for an article.
 
So I choose the Update command.
 
But about 3 out of 5 times, the upload of the file fails.
 
But that doesn't seem to have anything to do with the contents of the file as 20 minutes later, the upload works fine.
 
So my question is why do uploads sometimes fail and other times sail right through.
 
And why, when they are trying to upload, does my network connection turn to a turtle.



Size of Edge Animation inside Web content ID frame

I feel like a complete beginner here, but I have questions about two things I know very little: Edge Animations and HTML.
 
I created an Edge Animation with a specific stage size, smaller than an iPad dimensions.
 
I saved it and used the HTML path to add the content to a Folio Overlay.
 
The Edge Animation was inserted in the frame, but there was a huge whitespace to the right and down of the stage area when previewed on the iPad.
 
I opened the HTML file to try to change the size, but I couldn't find anything with dimensions.
 
Shouldn't the Edge stage be the size of the HTML frame?
 
Finally, I've turned the option of Scale Content to size and it doesn't seem to change anything in the display. What should I be looking for.
 
Please excuse how ignorant I look.



Windows plain and 64-bit CC installed. Which one gets launched?

I have both InDesign CC and InDesign CC 64-bit installed on my Windows machine.  My System info says I'm running a 64-bit system.  When I launch ID CC, which application gets launched?  What are the requirements to take advantage of the 64-bit architecture?  Is it more memory?  Can I uninstall the non-64-bit application?  I don't see incredible speed increases with CC for Win.



Sign Out not De-authorize

Just a heads up and a discussion in case people are wondering.  I had to "de-authorize" a InDesign on a computer I'm selling from my Creative Cloud account.  I went to InDesign's Help menu but didn't find "Authorize" or "De-authorize" listed. Instead there was a listing SIGN OUT [my email].  I chose that and got the message that the programs on that computer would no longer work.  Couple of things I gathered from this.  
 
#1 There is no Authorize command. I'm always signed in to Creative Cloud and that's what helps the CC find me to check if I've paid my bill and continue to use the software.  
 
#2 The software did not get sucked off my machine. I could have kept the software on my machine and then, in a few months, if I needed it, sign in again. That would cause the machine to now be authorized.  But I wonder, if, when I teach, could I 
 
• sign out at home 
 
• go to a corporation 
 
• open their machine 
 
• download InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator from CC 
 
• sign in 
• use them on that machine for a while 
 
• when I'm leaving sign out 
 
• go home 
 
• use my software at home.



Does a partitioned disk count as two machines?

I just started using a Mac computer running 10.8 and it has a command for all applications, Edit > Start Dictation.
 
I got it to work flawlessly in MS Word, but when I click inside a text frame in ID CC, I get the first letter of the first word and then nothing else.
 
Something to write off or is there a secret?



Adobe Digital Editions on Creative Cloud

Just wanted to register my surprise that Adobe Digital Editions is not available on Creative Cloud for download through the Adobe Applications Manager.
 
At this point I'm looking for all free Adobe software to be available on CC. I'm sure Adobe wants non-CC members to be able to download it, but as a CC person I'd like these things to be available on the cloud.
 
And yes, I know this is a user forum, but I'm hoping a CC employee reads these threads.



Opening form PDF from InDesign in LiveCycle Designer E2

I have a student who sent me an email about a problem he has using LiveCycle Designer E2.
 
He created an interactive PDF with what I assume is a ListBox or ComboBox in InDesign.
 
The form (and other elements) work fine when opened in Acrobat.
 
But he needs to open the PDF in LiveCycle Designer E2 to "add image field".
 
I don't know enough about LiveCycle to answer his question.
 
Does he have to use LiveCycle to add that image field? Is that something that InDesign could do?
Does anyone know of problems when opening existing PDFs with forms in LiveCycle?
Is he using LiveCycle incorrectly?
 
Any help is very appreciated.

I had problems yesterday syncing to CC. 
 
I updated the CCC software to 1.05 (mac). I could drag files into the CCC browser window, but the desktop folder did not sync.
 
Also, I could not drag folders into the browser window, which I think I could do in 1.00.
 
Now, my CCC icon menu shows I am unable to sync to the cloud.
 
I can drag files into the browser window, but they don't show up on the desktop.
 
I can drag files into the CCC desktop window, but they don't show up in the browser.
 
I turned sync on in the CCC icon menu, but the icon stays gray and nothing indicates syncing.
 
In addition, there is no System Preference icon for CCC.
 
How do I contact Adobe for help?
 
 



Page not loading for CS6 Help

If I choose Help > InDesign Help from CS6, I get the following alert.
I get the same message with two other CS6 products.
 
I don't get this message if I choose Help > InDesign Help from CS5.5. I get directed to the Help file.
 
I have been getting this message all day (about seven hours).
 
I asked a friend to check his Help command and he got the same message.
 
Anyone have any thoughts?



Javascript to hide the end of a video

You can deactivate a video (returning to the poster image) using Acrobat JavaScript, but can't make it happen automatically at the end of playback unless you use a custom videoplayer widget. The standard widget doesn't fire an event when playback ends.
 
I have a button that is set to hide certain fields on a page. I also want this button to hide the last frame of a video that may have been played on the page.
 
Show/Hide Fields won't do it.
 
Does anyone know the JavaScript that Dave mentioned.

Footnote formatting as aa, bb, cc, instead of aa, ab, ac, etc

A student just emailed me with this question.
 
In Word, if you choose the a, b, c, format for footnotes, if there are more than 26 footnotes, the footnotes are formatted as aa, bb, cc, etc.
 
But InDesign starts these additional footnotes as aa, ab, ac, ad, etc.
 
I've looked all over the help files, ID Secrets, and these forums and I can't find any way to fix the problem.
 
I finally had to resort to telling her to edit the PDF text (gasp!).
 
It's problably too late for her to fix this project, but anyone have any thoughts.



Exported PNG area isn't same as artboard

I've created an artboard at a certain size. I put some objects within the artboard. But the exported PNG is not the size of the artboard, but is only the size of the graphics on the artboard.
 
As designed? Seems wrong.



Descending order for windows in cascade?

I have 200 documents that I need to open in groups of 20.
 
I would like them to open so that the first window available is the first one alphabetically. Then, when I close that window, the next one open is the next one alphabetically.
 
But InDesign opens them with the last-one alphabetically first.
 
I suspect that ID is opening them by last modified and working backwards in time.
 
Anyone know a way to force the windows to cascade alphabetically?

Required fields are passing through Acrobat unfilled

I can't believe this error, but when I use InDesign to set several fields to be "Required" I am able to submit the form or print it from Acrobat Pro or Reader without any alert notice telling me the fields need to be set.
 
The fields are checked as Required in the Acrobat Properties db.
 
However, when I add a field to that PDF using Acrobat's field tools and then try to print or submit, I get an alert.
 
It seems that the Required fields are broken from ID. 



PDF for Help file in June?

Turning plain index entries to hyperlinks

Does anyone know if there is a script out in the wild that will look at the pages of an index and turn them into hyperlinks?
 
This would be a separate document that is part of a book so I need the hyperlinks to go to other docs in the book.
 
I know there is a $195 plug-in for a complete PDF. But I was hoping for a cheaper alternative.
 
And please, don't just write one for me. I would want to pay you for your time and trouble.

I am working on a project for InDesign that needs to output to DPS.
 
I take screen capture movies which are saved in the default mov format. These movies are 700 px x 400 px. That can't change.
 
I need to convert the mov to an mp4.
 
I open AME but I am confused as to how to set the output controls.
 
I don't want to change the dimensions.
 
What setting will convert the mov to mp4 without changing the dimensions?

Buttons disappear when security is set?

Has anyone else seen this?
 
I create a PDF document from InDesign with buttons. There are three buttons on each page. One goes back to page 1. One goes to the previous page. One goes to the next page.
No problem. They appear correctly.
 
Then I apply complete password security options for no printing, no modifying, no copying—nothing except reading for screen readers.
 
As soon as I do, the button for the next page on page 3 disappears. There is a hotspot in the area, but clicking it does nothing.
 
And all the buttons on the rest of the pages disappear.
 
The same problem happens when I create the security in InDesign.
 
I'm able to fix it by duplicating the buttons that do appear on the pages.
 
But it's a pain.



Converting x-refs to text screws up numbers

Has anyone seen this?
 
I have many x-refs in my documents that are part of a book. I want to delete the x-refs and "flatten" them to the plain text and numbers they refer to.
 
When I delete the x-ref in the panel, I get the warning that the x-refs will be converted to text. But the number part of the x-ref is not converted correctly. An x-ref of "page 13" is converted to "page 11" or "Chapter 18" is converted to "Chapter 65." (And there is no chapter 65 and there never has been.
 
I'm manually going in, typing in the correct number and then "flattening" the x-ref.
 
But I wonder if this is a bug or something wrong with my documents.



Does Digital Editions come with InDesign or do I have to download it separately

Creating instructions for a beginner and I would like to know if Digital Editions is installed automatically when I install InDesign? The Creative Suite? Or do I have to download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/



Desktop Viewer and iPad Adobe Viewer conflict on video previews

Steps:
 
Place .mov file in InDesign layout. Ignore the warnings about .mov file not for SWF output, only PDF. Be sad there is no poster.
 
Place .f4v file on same page in InDesign. Be happy that there are no warnings. Be happy there is a poster.
 
Use desktop Content viewer to preview the page. The .f4v file plays as desired. Image moves with controller. The .mov file controller moves but there is only a black screen, no image.
 
Use Adobe Viewer on iPad to preview the page. The .f4v file is a static picture with no video controls or images. The .mov file plays but there was no poster.
 
I was told that the desktob Content viewer is only for the most "raw" previews of the Overlay effects, but it seems that this is not quite correct. If you go by what the Content viewer shows you would not place the .mov file.
 
But if you place what does preview in the Content viewer, the .f4v file doesn't play on the iPad. 
 
Based on what the desktop Content viewer displayed, I thought the only format that would work on the iPad would be the .f4v. But given the love between Apple and Adobe regarding Flash that didn't seem to be possible.
 
I've had someone else confirm these findings.
 
Any thoughts?

I'm working on a book for ePub and have a document that has all the chapters in one file.
 
But we want each chapter to start on its own page.
 
The way I know to do this is with the Book feature and new documents for each chapter.
 
How would you handle the drudgery of breaking the single document into individual files?
 
Anyone know of a script that does this?
