question about length of strings

what are the characters that appear below as black diamonds with a white question mark inside? They are weird because when you do charToNum on just that character, Director returns a question mark PLUS the next character. For example, if I say "put theString.line[9].char[16]" (where theString is the text below), it returns "?R", which is strange because that is two characters. The length of line[9] is evaluated as one less than it should be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

" ,A ,,BOAT ,,RIDE

         ,,& ,,O!R ,,/ORIES

        0,,NEIL ,,BLACKFIELD

             ,PUBLI%$ BY

          ,HI< ,NOON ,BOOKS

            ,NOVATO1 ,,CA

          ,COPYR #AIII BY

          ,NEIL ,BLACKFIELD

          ,ALL ,RS ,RES]V$

       ,,ISBN3 #A-EGABH-AJI-F

        ,ADAPT$ = ,,SAL #B BY

       ,EXCEP;NAL ,T1*+1 ,9C4

           #A-HJJ-EDI-FIII

   _+WWW.EXCEPTIONALTEACHING.COM_:

           ,9 ,O ,VOLUME

        ,FULLY ,3TRACT$ ,BRL"

more or less given up because of one problem that is probably very
easy to fix: when debugging, it does not appear to be possible to
have the list of variables sorted alphabetically. this makes it
really hard to use. If Adobe wants more people to use Director,
which is a great program, they have to fix this. Another killing
problem for me is that when you use a custom icon for a projector,
it is not sized correctly, and looks terrible on the user's
desktop. We can't distribute applications like that, so it has to
get fixed!!

date for Director 11. I have been waiting to upgrade my products

Director, which is an amazingly great piece of software, and whose
functionality for programming in the kiosk and museum exhibit
environment is not duplicated in any other existing programming
environment. I am desperately hoping that Adobe realizes this and
does not have plans to give up on a community of developers who
don't have clear alternatives. That seems like an especially bad
thing to do considering all of the encouragement we were given to
hold out for the update version. Without that, my products will
probably die.

making pull down menus and file open dialogs speak

Hi,
I'm trying to create some applications that include speech
assistance for the visually impaired. there are two things that are
causing problems:
1. I can't make the file open dialog boxes speak. I would
like to emulate the behavior of third party screen reader
applications that speak the identites of GUI elements as the user
tabs through them. I am able to do this for custom dialogs made
with the MUI Xtra by putting voiceSpeak commands in the callback
handler so that as each widget gets focus during tabbing, it speaks
its identity. But this doesn't appear to be possible with file open
dialogs created with FileXtra.
2. I have created pull down menus using installMenu. This
works great, but I would like the user to be able to navigate these
menus using the arrow keys, and have each menu item speak as it
navigated to.

If anyone has any ideas about how to accomplish these things
in D11, I would be very grateful.
thanks.
