Why do special characters change font appearance in bookmarks?

I have a PDF that was rendered from a Word doc. Some of the bookmarks that were generated contain special characters (Ex. ∞). If I remove the character the font reverts to normal. Is there a fix for this?

I'm working with Acrobat 9 Pro.
