Why does it take so long when adding a new topic in RH10 with PushOK SVN

RH10 / Window 7 / PushOK SVN

After ugrading from RH8 to RH10, we installed PushOK SVN and the TortoiseSVN Repository browser for our doc team as our source control system, after having used RoboSource Control 3.1 when we had RH8.. Whether in the office or working remotely via VPN, when we add a new topic it can take 1-3 minutes for the topic to actually be ready for input.

Checking in edited topics when closing the project can also take a good deal of time. I expected some of that for those of us using VPN remotely but for those in-house I didn't. Our IT guys are at a loss. They don't believe it's the network.

Is this a common issue? Is there a way around it? Or is there something that comes into play that we are not even considering? OR??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is RH8 Compatible with Windows 8

RH8 / RSC 3.1 / Windows XP

Is RH8 compatible with Windows 8?

We have been looking at new machines with Windows 8, and also about upgrading to RH10, but the last I heard RH10 had not been fully tested for Windows 8. Has that changed, or will it change, or is that a matter for RH11 in the future?

The XP machines are out of date and browser compatibility is becoming an issue. Would we be better off getting RH9?

Any information, suggestions, etc. that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to revert to files in a previous compile

RH8 / RSC 3.1 / Windows XP

The complete file set for an older version of one of our helps was overwritten in error on the server where it resides. The version is still being used by a few customers. Is it possible to revert to the complete set of files in the RH project, as they were at the time of that older compile, so as to be able to create a new copy of the help as it was at that time?

Hopefully the question makes sense. Any suggestions and information anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Can projects compiled in RH8 work in a 64 bit application?

In the not too distant future my company will be developing 64-bit applications. Will RH8 compiled Webhelp and chm projects work for those applications?

Webhelp Index - Selected entry pop-up list does not display in Chrome

Windows XP / RH 8 / RSC3.1

Using a compiled Webhelp in FIrefox, when you click an Index entry that has more than one related topic a list pops-up displaying the related topics. Then you can click a pop-up entry to open the topic.

In the Chrome browser the pop-up does not display.

Is this a bug, or are there limitations to RH8 compiled Helps in Chrome?

If so, is this the only limitation?

Does RH9 create webhelps that are completely compatible with Chrome?

Any information you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Image Border style does not display in compiled help

Using Windows XP/RH8/RSC1.3 on a WebHelp Project

The border style I select (Double, 4px) for images is shown correctly on the topic page and in the preview, but when the project is compiled the border style is not the same as seen in RH and the Preview.

The image/frame as seen in RH and the Preview is shown first below. The same image/frame as seen in the compiled help is after that.

Is this the nature of a WebHelp project or something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Getting "Adobe RoboHelp 8 has encountered a problem..." error. Cannot open project

Windows XP / RH8 / RoboSource Control 3.1

Tried to open a project that I have not accessed for while. After clicking Yes or No to the "Get latest..." queston I get the error "Adobe RoboHelp 8 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I have tried repeatedly with the same results. Forum search finds several results but see nothing that matches this.

I'm thinking there may be a project file to delete that may allow me to get the project open but thought I should ask first.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Font list has one entry

Using Windows XP / RH8 / RSC 1.3

On one project I just noticed the Font drop-down list has only one entry (Times New Roman), which is not the font the project is using. The project is still shown in the Arial font, and this issue is not currently causing me a problem, but I thought I had better address it now. Other projects do not have this issue.

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Searches in CHM return "No topics found"

I've been building CHMs for this project for several years but today when I compiled it and tried to search from the Search tab it returns "No topics found."

I see no obvious problems in the compile.

Selecting from the Index tab works fine.

Rolling over image/link in CHM displays image errror indicator

Using Windows XP / RH7.

Hello. A co-worker needs to supply the same project in both CHM and Webhelp versions. She has recently worked with our design guy to introduce some new graphics and as part of that he did some css work and added some javascript. Neither my co-worker or myself are familiar with Java.

One of her topics includes a graphic menu that is set up as a table with an image/link in each cell. Mousing over each graphic pulls a second image file that displays the same image but with a tint to it, basically conveying the idea that this image is active, awaiting your click.

In the CHM output when you place the mouse pointer over one of the cell graphics the tinted image displays, but it also displays a small square with a red X in it, which has always meant to me that the image wasn't found or some error is occurring.

In the WEBHELP output this problem does not happen. In both cases the link works and when clicked takes you to the intended target.

The screen shot below provides an illustration of what is happening.

Below the screen shot is the code that is displayed when I mouse over a cell and then right-click and select "Inspect Element" in Firebug.

Since I am not conversant in java I don't really know what other evidence I should be providing here, but I'm hoping this is at least a start. I'm also hoping that the fact that the problem only surfaces in the CHM may make it evident to a more knowledgeable user what could be going on.

Can you restore a project from a single file

Using Windows XP / RH8 & RH7 / RSC 3.1

Is there a single file that lets you restore a project? My co-worker believes this is the case, but I can find nothing in the RH Help, or on this forum using a search term of "restore project", "restore from file", "file types" etc.

I can't find the Help page that has the explanation of each file type, which used to be easy to find.

What we are looking for is an equivalent to the FHB file in ForeHelp. You can restore the complete project from that one file.

I have tried a dozen searches on the forum and get no reponses for anything. Is search even working?

Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Project conversion (upgrade) RH7 to RH8 Problems

Using RH8 / Windows XP;

Four projects, by same writer, converted to RH8 from 7.

3 of the projects had a similar issue, which I am posting about.

Using a Master Topic on all 3 projects.

After the conversion, viewing a topic in design mode the header appears empty, and very large, no text. Fills the screen. Need to scroll down to see the topic text.

Also, the TOC was gone in two of the three projects.

I have inserted a topic HTML at the end of this posting from two of the projects in case that helps.

One is a french translation and has a lot of XML tags regarding the language. I'm not sure where that even comes from. The other is in English and has just the normal XML tags in the "head".

Both projects have the same issue with the huge, blank header on the Design page. But compiled they look normal except as noted below.

In the compiled Help the topic named "PAC Config" shows no border AND no background color. All topics are the same.

In the compiled Help the topic named "French PAC" shows no border in the Header/Banner, but does have the background color. All topics are the same.

I'm at a loss, and not really sure what else to include. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Changing Color of visited links not working

Using RH8 on Win XP, followed the Change text and link colors in a style sheet

instructions here http://help.adobe.com/en_US/RoboHelp/8.0/RoboHTML/WS5445609A-E591-404e-A02B-BE1EFD489E3B.h tml to change the visited link color, but it did not take effect.

Tried clearing cache, but still not working. I'm thinking it's probably something very simple, but at this point haven't a clue. Found nothing on the forum that seemed useful.

Run-time error on pop-up links

We discovered that if the first time we try to open a pop-up, if we do a fast double-click on the pop-up link we get the following error: A runtime error has occured. Do you wish to debug? Line 1563. Error: Access is denied.

After that error, you can click the link again in the same manner and the error does not occur.

If on the first attempt you click the link slowly and display the pop-up, after that you cannot cause the runtime error by quickly double-clicking the link.

Not a show stopper but hard to understand what is occurring. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Two users sharing project, not seeing updates

Using RH8 with RSC3.1 and XP.

Recently I added a project in RSC3 using the Windows Credentials for the user logins, as had been suggested in response to another posting I made on this forum. The logon part seems to be working fine.

The day I re-added the project to RSC on the first and second users PC's, the topic count for the second user was less than the first users total (per the total displayed at the top of the Topic Properties report.

So I removed the connection in RSC for the second user, copied the first users project to the second users PC and added a connection to the project in RSC. At that point they both had the same topic count.

The first user has done some work on the project, and the changes are not being added to the second user's list of topics when she responds to the GET LATEST VERSION dialog when she opens the project.

Is there a setting or a cause for this that makes sense?

RSC not accepting passwords

Hello.

Using Windows XP on all user machines. Using RSC 3.1 for all projects, and RH8 for the most part, though some projects have not yet been updated from RH7.

We have started experiencing a pretty major headache with projects no longer accepting the password that previously worked.

Today, for a project that had earlier experienced the problem, I set up a new database and then set up an RSC connection from the project to a new database and logged in twice. It stopped accepting that password in less than an hour. And shortly thereafter another project stopped accepting the password that had worked earlier in the day.

I had previously posted to this forum regarding a similar problem. We had been using the same password for all projects and part of the response was

"I can't speak for the newer versions of RH, but in the past it's been the case that RSC gets...unfriendly...unless your username/password is the same for both your RSC account AND your local pc login."

I did start using different passwords for each project, but that didn't solve the problem. My question to the above response is: How can we use the multi-author feature and follow that guideline, and have any real security on each of our machines? Wouldn't we all need to have the exact same username/password for our PC's and all the projects?

I have a separate database for each project to avoid maxing out the database size restriction. Is there a limit to how many databases RSC can deal with? Am I taking the wrong approach?

I really appreciate this forum as it has helped me many times. I'm at wits end about this problem. It's like trying to grab a glob of mercury. And I've had no luck trying to find classes for RSC. Is there such a thing? We took a class for RH7 and it was lightly touched on, but there seems to be no classes that I can find.

Any information, suggestions etc. that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Project rename catastrophic

Using RH8, RSC3.1 and XP.

I renamed a project per the Help instructions. When the project reopened most of the topics were no longer in the HTML file list, though they are in the

folder itself.

I would like to know how to gracefully get this project back in one piece. I imagine importing the topics is the key, but is there a better way.

I would also like to ask what happened? Did I miss something?

Show link appears instead of TOC and skin

Using RH8 with RSC3.1 on XP.

I am just about ready to release a new WebHelp project. When the opening page is called in the application it opens in the window with a SHOW link and no skin related features, or TOC, Just the default topic is displayed. Clicking the SHOW link opens the TOC and the skin comes into play.

I tried clearing the SHOW NAVIGATION PANE LINK IN TOPIC option but it still comes up that way. The developer advises he is doing nothing so far as context-sensitivity etc.

I have other WebHelp projects that do not have this problem. I've compared the settings and see nothing obvious. I found a mention in the Help but no way to enabled/disable.

How can I get it to open with the TOC displayed and the skin in place?

Many files outdated or different than server

Using RH8 / RSC 3.1 with Windows XP.

Not a big project (95 topics), and I am the only writer. For some reason many files are showing either in light yellow or light purple in RSC.

I always respond Yes to "get the latest files" and I always check in all files.

How can there be different content, or older files on my machine? How can I get them back in balance?

WebHelp Search results include text from topic

Hello,

Using XP with RH8 and RSC 3.1

Testing the Search tab functions in a Web help project and noticed that the Search Results list includes text from the topic, including from the Header, which have our product name and copyright statement.

Is there a way to turn the display of text off, or at least restrict where it picks up the text from? I like having the ranking column, but the topic title is all I really want in that column if that's possible.

Background image in template viewable in preview but not in compiled output

A co-worker, using RH8 on Windows XP is having a problem with a template that has a background .jpg image. In RH8 the background image is viewable in the preview, but when she compiles the project the background is not there. This image had been viewable in the compiled project when she was using RH7.

I'm at a loss for what to suggest as I don't use backgrounds in my projects.

Project will not accept credentials

Using RH7, Windows XP.

I attempted to access a project I had not worked with for about a month. It could not connect to the project in RoboSource control which was asking for the User / Password. It would not accept the credentials. All of our projects use the same User / Password. We tried rebooting the server, but no change.

I am the only writer on this project and it did not have this issue the last time I worked on it.I've not changed anything since the last time, and there is no one who would have, or could have.

I'm also the adminstrator for RoboSource Control for all of our projects. The other writers are Source Control ignorant (fact not defamation ;-). Our IT/Network group has nothing to do with these projects except for monitoring the servers.

Since we just got RH8 I went ahead and opened the project in RH8 but still have the problem trying to access the RoboSource Control copy.

I could fairly easily remove the project from Source Control and add it back, but I want to try to figure out what happened if possible, and if not, is there a way I can reset the credentials for this project? I've looked in the Help and Forum and if there is anything, I'm missing it.

Error 1931 during RH8 for HTML installation

Using Windows XP, RSC3.1 with RH7 already installed, and installing RH8. During the installation of RH8. I received the following error:

"Error 1931: The Windows Installer service cannot update the system file C:\WINDOWS\system32\msvcp60.dll because the file is protected by Windows. You may need to update your operating system for this program to work correctly."

The install continued normally after the error, but I don't know if there is an impact to functionality or not.

I can find nothing in a search of the forums for this error, and any information anyone could provide will be greatly appreciated. I am an "administrator" user on my PC.

RH8 Fonts Disappeared

Using RH8 and Windows XP: We just purchased upgrades from RH7 to RH8, for the four writers in our group. A co-worker using RH8 created some test topics to check out different fonts. The next day upon opening the project, 4 of the 8 fonts she tested (including one named Kristen) were no longer listed. Any ideas about what may have happened? I have not yet installed RH8 so cannot test myself.

Topic/file row highlighting / shading

In some projects in RSC, some of the topics/files in the list to the right are highlighted. Some in yellow, and some in light purple. I cannot find any previous posts, or a Help topic in RSC to explain what they mean, and whether there are additional possible colors?

I'm running RH7 on XP and we use RoboSource Control as well. I have been off this project for a while and another writer was working the project. I can't say if work flow has anything to do with this issue but FYI.

I tried to edit a topic and it said it could not be checked out "multiply," even though it was not checked out in my project. I looked at RSC and it showed check out along with many other topics. Topics show checked out in RSC but not in RH7

Hello, and thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I'm running RH7 on XP and we use RoboSource Control as well. I have been off this project for a while and another writer was working the project. I can't say if work flow has anything to do with this issue but FYI.

filename.htt not checked out

Using RH7 for HTML, Windows XP.

When I close one particular project, after clicking Yes to check in the selected files, I always get a message that the "filename.htt is not checked out."

But looking at the Project Setup list under Templates the only entry "Newcirc.htt" has a red check mark next to it. Right-clicking that file and selecting "check in" or "undo check out" both get the same message, "newcirc.htt not checked out".

I am not aware of problems from this, but it does not happen in other projects and I'm starting to wonder if/when it is going to bite me in the rear.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

I'm having problems with ordered and bulleted lists. Using RH7 for HTML in Windows XP. I am not an HTML ace but I generally can figure out what needs done to make it look the way I want. This one, I cannot see why in one topic it has one numbered style of list and in the other topic a different style. Same for the unordered list.

In the same project, using "default.css" with no editing to it, some topics have different tags for what I thought was the same type of list. The OL list, "list-style: inside decimal" has the number on the same column as the second line of text begins with. I see there is a difference, but I don't know what is causing the different "list type."

Code from the topics:

GOOD for me:

<ol style="list-style: inside decimal;" type=1>

For the bulleted list I don't see an obvious difference.

New Projects Options list empty

A co-worker is experiencing this issue. She is using RH7 on Windows XP.

After clicking File | New | Project, the New Project, "New" tab has no entries.

Also the Starter "Create New" list has none of the project options.

She has reinstalled RH7 and the problem persists. I'm at a loss as to what to suggest to her to resolve this.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Using RH 7 / RSC 3.1/ Windows XP

Both a co-worker and myself have received the "Error - the connection is invalid" error in RH7, working on different projects, attempting to do different functions. We could not get past it, and had to end the process to terminate RH7.

Both days the error occurred I had been in the process of adding projects to RSC 3.1, but when the errors occurred I was not in the middle of any file transfer activity.

Any information that can be provided to resolve, or at least understand the cause, would be greatly appreciated.

Occasionally, I will get no response to a posting on the forum. Most recently I made a posting regarding an error message we are receiving, and there was no response, from another member or from an Adobe expert. Does no response simply imply that no one has knowledge of the subject, thus no response? Or that the Adobe Expert on the subject matter is on vacation, or that I posted to the wrong forum? OR?

I think I posted to the correct forum. I can imagine situations where no one could have a clue, but in the case of an error message, I would expect that Adobe has a list of them, and what might cause them. I searched the knowledge base and found no related entries. What else can I do to find an answer?

Cannot add a baggage file

USing RH6 with Source Control 3. When I try to add a baggage file, it goes through the steps to add it, but then it does not display on the list, and the link in the Help to the file gets an error when clicked.

Previously I requested assistance on not being able to remove a baggage file and was advised to try editing the rhbag.apj to remove the entry. And it worked. BUT.....

At the same time this problem of not being able to add an entry was also occurring.

In my elation at getting rid of the one entry, i failed to try adding the new one before i labeled the earlier response as the answer.

What do i need to do to be able to add a baggage file?

Baggage Files - No Delete Option, Cannot Add

Using RH6 with RoboSource Control 3.

I am trying to remove an old baggage file and replace it. On the existing baggage file, the right-click menu shows the "delete" option unavailable. I've removed the reference to the baggage file from the project.

If I try to add a new baggage file, it goes thru the steps but the file is not listed.

Not sure what I am doing wrong. I'm wondering if Source Control has some effect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using XP, RH6, RoboSource Control

I had posted previously inquiring about the "Parameter is Incorrect" error occurring when selecting the Printed Documentation option on the Primary Layout list. Clicking OK did not clear the error, and had to terminate RH in Task Manager. After reopening the project the error still occurred. The resolution posted to that was deleting the PSS file from my PC (the file was/is not on the RoboSource machine). Which did clear the problem.

The problem came back after about a month. I'm just trying to determine if there is a know reason for this error? Is it a workflow issue, or a bug, or ??

Project Closes Slowly

Using RH6, Source Control 3:
A previous posting about a project taking a half an hour or so to save and close for a co-worker was resolved by deleting the CPD file. But now my co-worker is starting to experience longer and longer time periods when closing the project. I work on the same project, and I don't have this problem on my PC. Can anyone explain what causes this to occur, or what she may be doing that would cause a difference in our experience? OR what she is not doing? It is frustrating for her, and I'm concerned she is using some work methods, or flow that may cause other issues later on.

Printed Documentation error: Parameter is incorrect

Using RH 6 HTML. Tried to open the Printed Documentation dialog to revise some settings. Just selecting the option, not double-clicking, causes an error message saying "Parameter is Invalid" to display. Clicking Ok does not make the message go away. Have to terminate the process in Task Manager and restart RH to work in the project. The only recent change was that we removed Adobe Acrobat 6, and installed Adobe Acrobat 7 Elements from the RH6 CD, due to Acrobat 6 no longer creating bookmarks and TOC links, even though the options were selected.

RH6 Generate PDF button dimmed

Using RH6, Acrobat Pro 6.01, Word 2003:

In RH6, the Generate PDF button is unavailable.

The Word alternatives are not working properly: If we use RH Printed Documentation to create a Word doc, and then from the Word document try to generate the PDF, there are issues with the PDF. Those issues are: If we use the Word, Convert to PDF button on the toolbar, it acts normally for several minutes and then the PDF process just goes away, creating nothing. If we use Adobe PDF on the printer list, it creates the PDF, but the PDF has no TOC links or Bookmarks.

I've uninstalled Acrobat Pro 6.01 - then reinstalled and updated back to 6.01 and still have the same results. This happens on two different PC's. I know the bulk of this is more related to Word than RH6, but since the Generate PDF button is dimmed in RH6, I'm wondering if getting the button back to life will solve all of the issues.

If I install Elements 7 from the RH6 CD it creates the bookmarks and TOC links correctly, so our headings and TOC are good in WORD. BUT we want to retain the full featured Acrobat PRO 6, versus the limited feature Elements 7. According to the knowledge base, Acrobat 6.01 is compatible with Word 2003, but I'm beginning to wonder since the button is there, but dimmed in RH6.

I've checked www.grainge.org for tips on this but see nothing relevant to this issue. Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

Using Robo Source Control - Saving Project

There are two writers working on one HTML project, both using Source Control Explorer 3.8 with RoboHelp 6. I was the initial creator of the project and added it to Source Control.

When the other writer clicks the "save all" button, it takes 20-30 minutes before the save finishes (when the hour-glass goes away), allowing her to work in the project again.

I have no problems with saving. The Source Control database is on a separate server from either of our machines.

We are new to this work flow so it could very well be something done out of ignorance, but mine works fine and I installed the software on the other machine and helped set it up in Version control.

In Task Manager her CPU usage is maxed out, with the RoboHTML process using about 95 percent. I can see nothing different in her installation/configuration that should cause this. Any suggestions, ideas, would be most appreciated.

RoboSource Control and htt, hhc, and root.fpj files

Two writers are working on one project using Source Control. I have encountered three issues, which are no problem if the other writer is not working on the project.

1. I can't create a new topic due to root.fpj being checked out.
2. I could not add/edit a footer due to the htt file being checked out.
3. I could not modify the TOC.

Are the options available to work around this?

We are new to RoboSource Control and no doubt this is the cause of our road block, but I have not had a lot of luck with finding detailed into on the best work flow practices in Source Control. Any info would be greatly appreciated, and my appreciation of this forum becomes greater every time I use it.

Source Control for RH5 and 6

We have two licenses for RH6 and four for RH5. Can we use the RoboSource COntrol 3 that came with RH 6 as source control for the projects from both RH5 and RH6 ?

Seems like we should be able to, but we are just getting started on using RSC3 and details are hard to come by.

Shortcuts to a specific topic in a CHM

I was referred to the RoboWizard page and downloaded the Tips n Tricks chm where I found how to open a CHM in its own window, and in the tips, it provides a way to open a specific topic.

We are using the "hidden" shortcut option. We create a topic just for the shortcut. In our app all of the CHMs are in one subfolder, at the same level as the EXE's which are in their own folder.

The Tips n Trix help says to use "hh.exe" as the program to run. If I use that from the app to open the CHM I get an error that says it "Cannot open the file"

For the "Program Parameters" I am using "ms-its:circ.chm::/how_to_setup.htm"

If I use the chm file name instead of hh.exe, it works from CHM to CHM, but only opens the main page from the application.

If I double click the CHM, and then click the link that goes to a topic in another CHM, it works fine. The specific topic is displayed.

If I open the application, click Help | Contents to open the CHM and then click the link it opens to the "main" chm page, not the topic.

How can I get it open to the topic from the application?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CHM to CHM jumps

Hello - We are moving to CHM helps from HLP and encounter the situation where if we do an interfile jump to open a topic in another CHM, the title bar retains the orginal help name, TOC and indices, and searches in the second CHM are not able to use the correct index/toc.

A coworker has determined that using a Master TOC does work around this problem for her application, but i write for a suite of programs that may not all be included in a purchase. I don't want to maintain multiple TOC's if that's even workable, and I want to find out if there is a way to get around using a master TOC? I was hoping that opening the second help in a new window would solve it but my coworker says she could not get that to work. I have not had a chance to test that yet, and wanted to see if there are any answers, or ideas, on this forum as to how to resolve this.

Error trying to open a chm:

After a MICROSOFT HTML Help compile, with no errors, when trying to open the chm file get: Cannot open the file:mk:@MSITStore <followed by the full path> . The file also does not work in the application. Tried the currently posted forum suggestion re this error being about the "path being too long" - a shorter path did not help. This seemed to occur spontaneously. It worked one day, and after another compile it did not work. Tried Microsoft Support page article 312456 re replacing and registering hhctrl.ocx file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have just been advised that two of the applications that we write helps for will be using .net in the next version and the developers believe we cannot use chm compiled Helps in those two applications.
They say we will need to use WebHelp to build HTML files for it. Is this true? Secondly, if so, will the other modules of our s/w suite that use CHM's be able to jump to the .net HTML helps, and in turn, will the HTML jumps work to a CHM. I did a quick compile of a currently CHM based Help using WebHelp and two external links no longer worked.

Add Search Tab

I am trying to add the search tab. The Window option boxes are selected as per the Help. There is already an Index and Contents. But the search tab will not display. A co-worker advises her experience is that if you don't add at the beginning of the project, you cannot add it later. Is this true, or is there a workaround?

Any help would be most appreciated.
