Finding the Oracle data source (ColdFusion application)

I inherited a ColdFusion 10 application with an Oracle 11g back end. Recently, I began receiving java.sql.SQLSyntaxErrorException: [Macromedia][Oracle JDBC Driver][Oracle]ORA-00942: table or view does not exist error message when attempting to access the application on my Test server. Since it is a gov't application, I do not have direct access to CF Admin or the database. The gov't SysAdmin has verified the CF Admin connection is valid and connected. The DBA has verified the data source exists and the database is up and running. Thoroughly confused as to what is going on. I posted on the Adobe ColdFusion support forum and they suggested I post it here to get database eyes on the issue. The thread is here: https://forums.adobe.com/message/6854985#6854985

I haven't found one, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. I spent a couple minutes on Google, but nothing seemed to be on point.

Also, keep in mind that while IIS can use Kerberos authentication, once the request is passed to ColdFusion, IIS has nothing to do with how ColdFusion processes the server-side code or talks to databases.

Is there a java solution that CF could use. As I understand it, the .Net Apps also log in to the database with a service account but then use the impersonate feature granted to the account in Active Directory to use the windows login. Is there, perhaps a Java solution that coldfusion could use to enable impersonation?

Not that I'm aware of. As far as I know, the only way to pass Windows authentication at all is through the ColdFusion service account. Otherwise, ColdFusion can only pass username/password via JDBC - which would utilize SQL Server authentication rather than Windows Authentication. The reason it works for .Net applications is that .Net natively supports Windows Authentication. ColdFusion does not.

Our Organization uses Kerberos to authenticate users against active directory for its .Net applications. I am trying to leverage this for use with CF and have set up the ColdFusion Sever's IIS to use the Kerberos authentication. Is there a way to have coldfusion calls to the database use the Kerberos authentication instead of the service account that the ColdFusion Server is running on? This would allow the database calls to use the windows login credentials instead of the service account credentials.

ColdFusion does not pass user's credentials to the database connections by default, and cannot pass Windows Authentication credentials that way. It only sends the service account's credentials (if you leave username/password blank as you have done). The only way to pass user credentials is to put them into the individual query calls themselves, and even then you can't pass Windows Authentication credentials. You would have to use SQL Server Logins, and create accounts for each user.

I think most people are using either a dedicated SQL Server login for ColdFusion and run all queries under that account, or they do as you have already done and use Windows Authentication along with the ColdFusion service account. If you need an audit trail, then pass usernames into the insert/update queries and store them manually along with the other data you are inserting/updating.

We are updating our Applications to use single sign on and are running into a problem with database access. We are using CF11 Enterprise and SQL Server 2008 on IIS 7.5.

We have set up the ColdFusion Application Service to run under an AD service account and have created the data sources in CFAdmin leaving the username and password blank. The data sources verify and all seems good. The problem comes when running a query. The credential passed to the database is the service account and not the windows authenticated user. As such the query fails. What are we missing to get CF to pass the Windows Authenticated user credential instead of the service account?

12c really doesn't matter. Just use 11g.

Coldfusion 11 can't connect to the oracle 12c container/plugin database design.

It connects to the container database all right; but not so much the plugin.

If you use an oracle database, you'll want the security features like label security.

I read somewhere that Label security only works on the plugin; not the container.

If CF11 can't connect to the12c plugin, what good is it?

Just use 11g.

Thank you Carl Von Stetten and BKBK for your help.

Just a day ago, I was able fix the connection error. I downloaded the newer version of the JDBC driver (7.0.7) and the DSN was able to connect to the database.

It could be that Sybase jConnect 6.05 is suitable for the Java version of Coldfusion 9 (v1.6), but not for that of Coldfusion 11 (v1.7).

I'm trying to create a DSN in ColdFusion Standard v11 server using Sybase jConnect 6.05 JDBC driver connecting to a Sybase SQL AnyWhere 12 Server (running on another server machine). ColdFusion has been installed on a brand new Windows 2012 (Standard) Server and uses IIS 8 for the web server.

I have done everything mentioned on this page (of course, the driver class and other details have been modified) ColdFusion MX: Configuring the Sybase jConnect 5.5 driver

When I try to verify the connection in CF Administrator, it throws the following error:

Connection verification failed for data source: ars_jdbc

java.sql.SQLException: The method com.sybase.jdbc3.jdbc.SybDatabaseMetaData.getJDBCMajorVersion() has not been completed and should not be called.

The root cause was that: java.sql.SQLException: The method com.sybase.jdbc3.jdbc.SybDatabaseMetaData.getJDBCMajorVersion() has not been completed and should not be called.

I know that, all the connection parameters are correct because I have been able to create a DSN on another CF instance (CF 9) to the same database that I am trying to create a DSN for from CF 11. Please guide me in the right direction to fix the problem.

Yes, dynamic query statements can be assembled using <cfif>. I would suggest you switch your IsDefined() to a StructKeyExists() and strongly suggest you make good use of <cfqueryparam>:

This issue was corrected and had nothing to do with ColdFusion in the end , it was related to a networking issue where 2 of the boxes(VM's) were sharing a MAC address. This occurred after I was testing Windows Network Balancing on the boxes, once I removed that component it caused all kinds of weird issues. Once the MAC was changed the DSN issue of course went away.

Very odd issue that has just started with our CF10 environment with 2 of our dev boxes.....I have a box for example that has been configured with 2 instances....dev-app and dev-admin. Randomly both instances will have issues talking to our DSN's , the main coldfusion admin http://localhost/CFIDE/administrator communicates no problem with the same set of DSN's. I have 2 boxes out of 15 acting like this....they are all setup exactly the same in terms of virtulization, firewall, etc

Specific error I receive is

Connection verification failed for data source: cc_core
java.sql.SQLException: Timed out trying to establish connection

I am at a loss why these boxes are suddenly popping up with these DSN timeouts....I have even rebuilt one of the boxes as far as CF goes but still same issue.....it might work again but I can't have it soo flaky.

The problem is that CF11 uses a version of hibernate in which boolean fields that contain NULL values are bugged in MS SQL. It is in the release notes and Adobe has shown no indication that they intend to update Hibernate in CF11 to fix it. I added a vote to the bug:

Bug#3518916 - Trying to inserting Null in primitive boolean type throws error for SQLServer

The workaround is to replace ormtype="boolean" with ormtype="numeric_boolean". I haven't tried this as we'd been holding off in the hopes that they would patch to a later release of Hibernate but no luck so far.

You certainly filled in incorrect values in the form on the datasource page of the Coldfusion Admnistrator. If the problem persists, make a printscreen of the values you fill in the form. We would be glad to discuss it.

Why are you using ODBC to connect to MS SQL Server or MySQL? Use the provided JDBC drivers - they are faster and more reliable than ODBC. Consider ODBC a database connection method "of last resort" (i.e., only when a JDBC driver isn't available).

It seems this has something to do with empty/null values in the varchar2 column. The more empty/null values returned, the (exponentially) slower it becomes with cfstoredproc.

Recently I installed ColdFusion 11 Developer version (on Windows 8 & IIS) to test the migration of a CF9 based website that uses Oracle as its underlying DB. 1 of the first problems I encountered are the PLSQL stored procedures that seem to be very slow, like 10-50 times slower than with CF9. So I did a test where I execute the exact same SQL statement, which returns ~11000 rows, with both cfstoredproc and cfquery. The processing time of the stored procedure is 111645ms while the processing time of the cfquery is 362ms. The query doesn't return any (C)LOBs, per row there are 4 columns returned, 3 having a number, 1 having a varchar2 with a max size of 256 characters. I uninstalled CF11 several times but everytime I get the same results, no matter what I try in the CFIDE. Maybe I'm missing something obvious here, but for now I don't see it...

I have oracle 12c working with coldfusion 11 enterprise edition on 64bit oracle linux 6.5.

However, 12c uses a container/pluggable architecture.

If I create a user in the container database (CDB), the datasource GUI in CF11 can log into that user account.

If I create a user in the pluggable database (PDB), I CANNOT get CF11 to log into that account.

If I create an oracle service name in listener.ora, I CAN log into the pluggable account from the shell i.e. sqlplus user@pdb.

So, the service naming is not the issue.

Is it even possible to hit the account within the PDB with the default ORACLE driver in CF11 datasource GUI?

Or, ...must one set up the database as a container-only to allow CF11 access?

Srinivas,

The only time I use the "other" driver and a JDBC connection string is when I need to use a feature of the database system that isn't directly supported in the provided driver. As an example, Microsoft SQL Server's "Always On" feature and spatial/hierarchical data types aren't supported in the provided DataDirect drivers that ship with ColdFusion, but they can be used if you use Microsoft's JDBC driver.

As to performance, I haven't done testing personally. I think as long as you are using a JDBC driver, the performance differences should be negligible. Just avoid ODBC connections when possible, as these are generally slower than JDBC.

In ColdFusion we can create DSN in 2 ways. Either we can select the driver for the specific database or we can use the Other as the driver and we can create the DSN by specifying the connection string. Which is the best way in terms of the performance for apps. Any idea.

Here I am looking to create the DSN to SQL Server 2012 and I have create 2 DSN's, one with SQL Server driver and one with other and mentioned the connection string. I don't see any difference as of now. Please advise which one to user.

I am looking to connect to the last sql server 2012 multi-subnet failover clustering which requires to mention the connection string MULTISUBNETFAILOVER=Yes.

Even though I have mention, its still failing to create the DSN, I am able to connect to it from SQL Server Management Studio. Does any able to connect it. do i need to install any JDBC drivers for this to success.

CF11 - SQL Type Not Supported By This Driver on basic ORM Update

We are testing out one of our web applications in CF11.

We have a basic ORM entity update function that fetches an object, individually calls several setters, and then saves the entity inside a transaction tag in cfscript. We are working with Microsoft SQL 2012 Standard edition. This worked under CF9 and CF10.

Under CF11, we get the following error:

Error: An exception occurred when committing the transaction. The root cause of this exception was: coldfusion.orm.hibernate.HibernateSessionException: [macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]The specified SQL type is not supported by this driver..

The line of code throwing the error is whatever the last line inside the transaction {} block is.

The SQL being run follows. This is super basic. What is going on here?

First things first, I would advise you to apply the upgrades, if you haven't yet done so. I remember Coldfusion MX7 to be quite buggy. We could not wait to apply the upgrades and hotfixes. Version MX7.0.2 turned out to be the lasting upgrade. We used MySQL, however, not SQL Server.

You can get the information you want from Adobe Support. But you can think it through yourself. The way I think about it is as follows.

Coldfusion is an application that includes database functionality. I may therefore assume that Coldusion would be backwardly compatible in its support of database server versions. In other words, a new version of Coldfusion, say 9 or 10, would work with an older database server like SQL Server 2005.

However, I would not expect a previous version of Coldfusion, say MX7, to be compatible with newer database server versions like SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2012. Even if someone told me they were compatible, I would still expect such a set-up to be an accident waiting to happen.

Thanks for your information. Basically we have a legacy website which is still using ColdFusion 7 and unlikely we could upgrade it to use the new CF version. But we also have another project for upgrading all the SQL Servers from 2005 to 2008 or 2012. Did you experience any problems with CF7 while connecting to SQL Server e.g. 2008 or 2012?

The earliest version of official system support matrix I can find from Adobe is just for Cf 8.

I can imagine you being unable to find Coldfusion MX 7 information on the web. Adobe has, very unwisely, converted most of the links to point to information about the current product, ColdFusion 10.

However, you can make an intelligent guess from the release dates. Here is the result of a quick product search on the web:

The issue is likely caused by you not having yet assigned port 1433 in SQL Express itself. Follow the procedure described on the following page, and you should solve the problem: http://www.tensixconsulting.com/2012/02/sqlserverexception-the-tcpip-connection-to-the-hos t-port-1433-has-failed/

In particular, remember to assign port 1433 to 127.0.0.1 and to IPAll. Also set 'Active' and 'Enabled' to 'Yes' for the IP 127.0.0.1. While you're at it, if 'Named Pipes' is disabled, you should right-click on it and select 'enable'. Afterwards, restart the Windows service 'SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS)'.

It is advisable to allow ColdFusion server authentication. However, the SQL Express server is configured by default to allow only Windows authentication. This conflict may lead to errors.

Should you then encounter the dreaded Error 233: "No process is on the other end of the pipe", proceed as follows. Open the tool Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. Right-click on the name of your database server, then on Properties. In the user interface that opens, click on Security. Select the combined 'SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode'. Restart the service 'SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS)'.

As a former PC technician, the first rule of troubleshooting is "check your connections". Not just the physical connections. Make sure that there isn't a firewall interfering with the connectivity.

Having problems connecting Coldfusion10 with sql server express 2012

Hi,

I am having problems setting up a datasource for a local sql express 2012 server. Its running as the default instance. Connections are working with ODBC and client told just not Coldfusion.

When I try to set up a connection using the sql driver I get this error:

Connection verification failed for data source: Leaf

java.sql.SQLNonTransientConnectionException: [Macromedia][SQLServer JDBC Driver]Error establishing socket to host and port: 127.0.0.1:1433. Reason: Invalid argument: connect

When I try a Socket connection with an ODBC connection I setup in windows I get this error:

The support for Oracle 12c is there in ColdFusion 11. As of now, we don't have any plans to add this support in ColdFusion 9/10

We have a need to upgrade our Oracle DB from 11g R1 to 11g R2 and are not in a posiition to move off of ColdFusion 9 yet. Has anyone run into any issues with 11G R2? I know it's not officially supported by Adobe, but I don't think we will have much choice in the matter.
