There may be a better solution but if you are importing rather than linking, one solution would be to copy your document and then amend the styles to remove the numbering.

To clarify:

I have my paragraphs in Word set up with the required numbering properties using Word's Style settings. In Word, I want the headings to be numbered 1.0, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc. because the intent is for the reader to read through the manual like a book - from start to finish.

I'm single-sourcing my manual from Word into RoboHelp to generate an online help package. However, I do not want my RoboHelp headings to be numbered because the user may or may not read each topic in order (in other words, they may only need to read what's in section 3.2, but won't get there by reading sections 1.0 through 3.1 first). I might also clarify that each heading is its own topic - so Section 3.2 would be a separate topic from 3.0 and 3.1.

So for example, in Word, it reads like this:

"1.0 Introduction

[content goes here]

1.1 System Requirements

[content goes here]

1.2 References

[content goes here]"

And in RoboHelp, I want it like this

"Introduction

[content goes here]"

---[end of topic]---

"System Requirements

[content goes here]"

---[end of topic]---

"References

[content goes here]"

---[end of topic]---

Does that make sense?

So how do I keep the numbering in my Word document, but set up the Conversion Settings in RoboHelp to ignore those numbers and only include the text following the autonumber? I have been able to do this when single-sourcing a FrameMaker book into RoboHelp.

Hi Sarah. With Word you have to create your styles with the required numbering properties. Then you map these to your RoboHelp Styles in the Word Conversion Settings dialog.

I have a user manual in Word that uses outline autonumbering for Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. For example, "1.0 Introduction," "1.1 System Settings" and so on).

I know when setting the conversion settings for FrameMaker, you can select the Ignore Autonumber option in the Conversion Settings dialog to keep only the paragraph content. I don't see anything like this for the Word Conversion Settings. Does this capability exist?

I note this question was posted in the RoboHelp for Word forum. If you are using RoboHelp for Word rather than RoboHelp HTML, it no longer ships with RoboHelp 11.

Hi there

RoboHelp version X5 would now be what, perhaps eight years old? In computer time, that's really really old. For one thing, the outputs would likely fail in modern browsers. That's usually one of the biggest factors in staying current with RoboHelp upgrades. Ensuring the browser compatibility.

If you are using Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, you are able to install the Microsoft Virtual Machine for XP mode and actually run Windows XP on those platforms. And I'm thinking X5 would likely work if you did that. I'm unsure if it will even successfully run on Windows 7 or 8. All you can do is try it and see.

You will need to visit the Adobe web site for RoboHelp to obtain pricing. There is RoboHelp and there is the Technical Communication Suite which includes RoboHelp, but also includes Framemaker, Acrobat, Illustrator and Captivate.

When you say you want to convert PDFs to Word, there is no obvious link with Adobe's RoboHelp product. Are you in fact working with RoboHelp or have you perhaps asked in the wrong forum?

I signed up to convert pdfs into word format but now I don't know how to save the converted document into my files. It says it is a web archive and I cannot work with the document. I can't cut and paste. What do I need to do?

I have to ask why you are creating webhelp and then using the WebHelp to CHM converter rather than just getting Rh to generate a CHM in the first place?

WebHelp links have a different format so that will likely be behind your problem.

Thanks for the response.

I am really tensed for the same...

Actually the error occurs in the following case:

1. I am creating a Parent folder in robohelp with the name ABC..

2. Next Under ABC i have created 2 separate folders say XYZ and EFG.

3. Under XYZ i have created various Topics say 2 or 3.

4. Under EFG i have created various Topics say 7 or 8.

5. Now, i have created a TOC with name for ABC (Parent Folder.)

6. Next i have dragged and dropped my two sub folders that i have created under ABC in Project Set up wizard that is XYZ and EFG, in order to generate the webhelp first and then the CHM file fo rthe same.

7. Webhelp is successfully getting generated.

8. But when i convert the Webhelp to CHM Converter, after few seconds the robohelp gets halt and it shuts up the robohelp, showing a message dialog box that the Adobe Robohelp 11 is Troubleshooting for the error, the Windows manager will get back to you..Someting like this, the .CHM file for the same gets generated on the described path, but when i click on it, it does not open and shows the error as "Cannot open file: mk:@MSITStore: C:\\Users\..\Desktop\filename.chm".

Please help me in sorting the above issue.

According to me:

I think i am Lacking in the two things:

1. How to link all the topics with the parent folder.

2. How to Merge the projects.

Can you please provide me the link where i can get tutorial to create a TOC for multiple files in a same TOC and to generate a chm for them.

Actually for single project folder i have worked successfully. But, its first time i have to create a chm with lot many sub folders in it, as like one create a book.

When exactly does this occur? Upon attempting to generate the CHM? Or does it happen after you generate and try to open it? And if so, how exactly are you trying to open it? (Double-clicking, Clicking the View button after it compiles, etc.)

Search not working in Windows 7, works on XP

Hi folks,

We had quite a time getting RoboHelp for Word to work on our new Windows 7 machines. The highest supported combination (of RoboHelp version and Word version) that we were aware of from the postings on this site did not work. Long story.

Anyway, we ended up reinstalling RoboHelp 7 and Word 2007. We have Word 2010 on our machines for other things, but we use 2007 exclusively for RoboHelp. We still save our files as .docs instead of .docxs. (This was a decision made long ago and there was a reason for it, I think, but I don't know it now. :-P I'm just mentioning it on the off chance that it's relevant.)

We thought all our problems were over - the help seemed to be compiling fine - BUT: the Search tab does not work on Windows 7 machines. Comes up completely blank.

The same help file, including the Search tab, will work fine on XP machines.

Any advice?

So just to touch all the bases we have opened the old project and compiled, and removed the startup macros. The reult is still the same. Right?

Time to try creating a new WinHelp project importing the word file.

You say you "beleive" which suggests that you didn't test it was the same. I'd suggest you try that first. If you have done this and the problem still persists, if could well be of the macros. Especially if there are non-standard ones that are not one of the standard RH ones. I'd try removing these one by one to find the culprit.

I had the same problem importing an RH for Word project into RH11.

Almost every link in the project was corrupted - both links in TOC and within topics. The TOC links were all showing as external links, not regular page links.

The corrupted links all started with a couple of garbage characters, then "n.chm::" followed by the actual link text.

By trial and error, I found that the same options Steven used worked for my project. That is:

In "Import WinHelp Project: Folders": select "Do not create subfolder" under "Folder for HTML Files"
In "Import WinHelp Project: Features": select "Retain" under "External Topics"

Once I set those options, all the links were fine.

Yes, there's a default topic selected in the SSL (WinHelp 4 is the primary layout).

And I believe compiling the old version would give the same result. All I did to create the new version is save the old project under a new directory, it would be the same, since RH was re-installed, etc., I don't believe there would be any carryover.

I do have a few Startup Macros listed with this project, which was created years ago by an outside contractor (I think) who is long gone. The RH help file describes macros as activating when the Help system first appears ... displays and functions. Could one of those not be functioning, and not causing the initial appearance I'm looking for? Or are they default macros that came with the installation?

This is more of a hunch as it has been a long while since I used WinHelp. In the first part of your SSL properties, have you selected a file in your Source Documents. Is it also safe to assume that you haven't excluded any content with a conditional build expression.

One other thing to try is to compile the old source version. Does this give the same problem?

They are in the same directory. As for calling, at this point, I'm just opening the hlp file directly. There are MAP IDs but I haven't gotten to that point yet. I'm just the tech writer so some of this is over my head. Hopefully, that answers what you were asking.

Have you got the .CNT and HLP files installed in the same directory? If so, can you tell us more about how the help is being called?

Upgrade from Robohelp for Word 6

Our company is planning to upgrade the RH that we are using due to the issue on Chrome browser not displaying the TOC and search function not working.

We have been using Robohelp for Word in version 6. I know it's outdated but it was working for us and as they say "if ain't broke don't fix it" or some such things. The chrome related issue might have been there for a long time but it just came into out attention recently.

I am trial testing RH 11 and my main issue is the link in TOCs to most of the topics are missing. I've posted 2 discussion but not fixed yet.

Can anyone please advise the best way to tackle this scenario? Do I convert the Word to HTML in RH 6 first before upgrading to RH 11? Is there a list of task to do to prepare my projects in the upgrade to RH 11?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

So you were trying to run Rh for Word without a copy of Word installed, correct?

It used to be the case that Word had to be installed before Rh. That is no longer true of Rh HTML but it may be true of Rh for Word. Try completely uninstalling RH using something like RevoUninstaller to completely clean up. It's free and lots of people have found it helps uninstall Rh.

Beyond that, sorry but as I have indicated, it's Adobe Support and it's free for installation issues.

There is no .xpj file. Problem is that this software does not run under any account except administrator. I have found that installing word 2007 standalone resolves the bulk of the problems with opening the files. Now I just need to get this software running under user accounts that have admin privs.

I understand the question but only Rh's developers can answer that. My guess would be that only Rh HTML was patched but maybe they can now fix it for Rh for Word. Support are the people to ask them that.

I think you may be right. I’ve been going around with Adobe support and they are getting back to me on that point. I have been telling them we’re using RH10 for Word for a couple of weeks and I finally got that across to them this morning. My question for them was that these fixes you’re giving me aren’t working because you’re having me include the fixes in the RoboHTML folder but when RH10 for Word is in use there is a RoboHELP folder with a very similar structure. So if I’m generating a WebHelp can I put the fixes in the RoboHELP folder so that after generation the fixes are in the WebHelp folder in the same way as the HTML version is working?.

I have applied fixes from Adobe for Blank Topic Panes in IE10 and a blank TOC in IE11. The instructions indicate the fixes should be made in folder RoboHTML which I have done with no solution to the problems. I am wondering if I should apply the Adobe fixes to folder RoboHELP since I am using RoboHelp 10 for Word in a Windows 7 environment. The reason for the question is that the data structure appears to be the same under both folders and the RoboHELP folder does not seem to be present in a RoboHelp 8 installation of HTML without Word.

Thanks for opening the Rh sample. You have confused me though as you say "the project" which sounds like your project but your project is a Rh for Word project.

In the root is there an hpj or an xpj or both?

I tried opening the Global Site Consult sample from the Starter window and at first it seemed like it wasn't opening. It did nothing for a while, so I tried opening a new blank project and then the Global Site Consult project opened on top of it. Now I can access the sample from the Starter window with no problem. - Sandy

In Rh HTML, click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.

Peter,

I have re-installed the application and am still getting that RoboHelp has stopped working. The curious thing about this is that the program runs fine under an administrator account. Once you use a user account that has administrator priveledges you have the problem. This is now an issue with 2 seperate installs getting the same error message. The faulting module is also a piece of Microsoft C++ Redistributable packages. Doesnt give the year or version in event viewer.

Edit: I have re-create the user profile, ran as administrator, re-installed the product and even tried running the save robohelp files from a directory where the user has full control.

Rh9 did not ship with Rh for Word 8. The numbers have always matched.

Rh9 shipped with RoboHelp for Word 9. Rh10 shipped with RoboHelp for Word 10. Those numbers relate to the Rh version by the way so it's not clear what you mean when you refer at the end to Word 10. Do you mean Word 2010.

There were very few changes other than Word version compatability.

As Rh11 stopped shipping with RoboHelp for Word, you may have to bite the bullet and find out why the external links break. I wonder if creating a CHM from RoboHelp for Word and then reverse engineering that into Rh HTML might work? See Reverse Engineering on my site.

This may be a dumb question but is there an upgrade to RH 9 for Word?

We bought RH for windows in 2012. It came with the HTML version 9 and Robo Help for Word 8...which must have been upgraded in the background to RH 9 for Word, because that is what is now showing in "About RoboHelp" and that is not what was originally showing. Is there a RH for Word 10? We have two projects that will not convert nicely to HTML, lost a ton of external links, so for those I have to stick to RH for Word. If there is a 10 we might be interested in getting so I can use Word 10.

Given Rh will not open any project and the templates were missing, it looks rather like an installation issue. Did you install with admin rights?

If you did and if a second attempt fails, then I think the advice has to be the same as in the other thread, contact Adobe Support.

Hi,

I had replied to pgcalc's post with this but since it is a different error I am getting, decided to start a new thread.

I have:

-new Windows 7 machine

-Word 2010

-RoboHelp for Word 10

But when I try to open an .hpj - obviously, these were created in older versions of RoboHelp - I have no idea which version, originally, but the last work on the project was done in RoboHelp 7 or 8 - I get the message "RoboHelp has stopped working."

Here's what I have done so far:

I noticed that the RoboHelp templates were not installed in the default Word templates folder like they usually are. So I copied all the templates from C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 10\RoboHELP\WordTemp\en_US\Word11 to C:\Users\[yours truly]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates. Still no luck.

Any advice?

Hello pgcalc - did you ever get RoboHelp 10 for Word to work with Word 2010? We just got brand new Windows 7 machines, RH 10 and Word 2010, and I can't even get an .hpj file to open from RoboHelp.exe. We get the message "RoboHelp has stopped working" (yes, that much I had figured out for myself ).

Does anyone else have problems with RH Word with Word 2007 when browsing to a link?

I am just wondering because I've been told it's a Word 7 issue and I have not seen anything in the forum on this. I know there are not a lot of us still using RH for Word, but there are enough of us that someone else must have come accross this issue.

Using the RH menu. A hyperlink going thru Word will not work with Robohelp for Word. I'm getting a whole new computer so we will uninstall on my old computer and reinstall on the new computer. Thanks.

When they upgrade you, RoboHelp will have to be reinstalled and that may fix the problem. You are creating the link using the Rh menu rather Word's menus?

Creating an output on a later OS does not affect its ability to be used an older OS. The issue, as you know, is creating winhelp to be used on Windows 7 or 8. That forces each user to download a file to support winhelp.

I feel a bit silly even asking this, but I'm not a coder and don't have the technical knowledge to know for sure that it's a silly question.

Background: We are upgrading to Windows 7 from XP in the near future. We will be using RoboHelp 10 and Word 2010 - at least that's the plan ...

For our department's major product, since it's big and has been around a long time, we are still stuck using RoboHelp for Word to generate WinHelp. We then use the RHelp for Word source to generate WebHelp, since some modules of the product require WinHelp, some require HTML pages, and much of the source material is needed in both outputs. And yes, I did read someone's post likening this process to drinking coffee while running a sprint - believe me, if I had any choice about this I wouldn't be doing it. If RoboHelp has added the capability to generate WinHelp from RoboHelp HTML, let me know .

Anyway, because of previous weird experiences after upgrades, I am being asked to find out: Has anyone used RoboHelp for Word to generate help output - .hlp or .chm or HTML pages - on a Windows 7 machine and tested it on a Windows XP machine? If so, were any problems observed?

Assuming we can still creak along with RoboHelp 10 to generate the same antiquated output ... which we can, right?? ... my gut tells me that a file is a file and I can't see why an .hlp file or web-based help files that run on Windows 7 wouldn't run on XP. But again, I don't have the technical knowledge to say this for certain.
