I'm looking to test a plugin (of sorts) with any RH 11 Webhelp output that uses categories and browse sequences. A generated Webhelp output of the Salesbuilder 2 sample project would suffice. I just don't want to buy another version of RH for one test.

If someone could post a zipped file of the output somewhere, or send it to the email address on my profile, that would be extraordinarily helpful.

You can remove the SSL from your local copies. The main thing is that there should not be an SSL folder in TFS. You can always zip up the project folder before deleting as to never lose anything.

Also, what is the directory you are generating to? Can you clear that directory completely and try again?

Where am I supposed to remove the SSL folder from? My project is under version control through TFS: am I removing this from the file structure before publish? In the parent? In the child ones?

My local copy of the parent has an SSL folder which contains an empty WebHelp folder only. The corresponding folder on the TFS server contains no SSL folder.

My local copy of Child 1 has an SSL folder with a bunch of folders in it, some of them very old publishes, some very recent. The corresponding location on the TFS server has no SSL folder at all.

My local copy of Child 2 has two empty folders in SSL. The corresponding location on the TFS server has no SSL folder at all.

Is it these local copies I should be deleting using Win Explorer?

I'm trying to be really careful here as I really don't want to mess up what was a project that was working really well.

WebHelp generated in RH11 causes errors in Google Translate.

I have a WebHelp system that I originally generated in RH9. Pages from that generated output seem to do fine when I use translate.google.com to translate them, regardless of browser. However, I've subsequently upgraded to RH11, and now the new generated output causes problems in some browsers. Specifically, the error message in Firefox (v. 33.0.3) is "Error: Permission denied to access property 'whname'," pointing to line 10 in whproxy.js. Chrome (38.0.2125.111m) gives the following error message, pointing to the same line in the same file: "Uncaught SecurityError: Blocked a frame with origin "http://translate.googleusercontent.com" from accessing a frame with origin "http://translate.google.com". Protocols, domains, and ports must match."

For what it's worth, here's the function it's talking about, from RH11's generated whproxy.js:

I'm so unfamiliar with JavaScript that I can't make heads or tails of this, and I haven't had any successful suggestions from within my company. One developer suggested that I should take the whproxy.js that was generated by RH9 and stick that into my generated output, since doing so solves the problem. I'm a bit hesitant to do that, as I figure that there might actually be reasons for the (MANY) differences between the two versions and I'm uncertain what I'll break or lose by using an old version of the file. I'm hoping that somebody here might be able to enlighten me as to possible consequences of such an action, or possible workarounds, or anything else of interest. (And please, no commentary on the relative value of using Google Translate. It wasn't my decision, I just build the help! :-) )

I tested that and it does partially resolve the problem in IE11. It still gives the message and the user must click the here link.

New Twist...I did some testing with Google Chrome and found if I turned off Pop-Up Blockers, the Map IDs (CSH) work. I tried this in IE11 and I get the message "The help page you are looking for can be found at here." (clicking on here will display the CSH). We only use IE so having the users switch to Google Chrome is out, and Pop-Up Blockers turned off is against company IE policy. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply, Willam. I'm not sure I was very clear. What I was expecting is exactly what you describe, that two empty folders will be created, one for each child (I only have two). The problem is that that is not what is happening: when I generate and publish the parent to a completely clean location, i.e., delete all previous content from the publish location, the child folders are placed under mergedProjects but they are full! They contain the child projects, which are published at the same time, and from what I know, this is not supposed to happen, they are supposed to be blank, until I publish the two child projects there.

Once I know why this is happening, I'll come back and address the second part of my problem above.

Hi,

On creating merged help, the master project will create empty folders for all children in the folder mergedProjects. Having those three empty folders is what I'd expect. From your child project you generate to the Child 1 and Child 2 folder. For every child project you take to the output, RoboHelp creates a folder. Why it needs it? Probably there is some script checking that folder, but I'm not sure.

As to why you have two Child 1 and Child1 folder, in your main TOC, you probably still have a placeholder for the Child1.

Sorry for slow reply, family bereavement.

When you generate you do so locally and the target folder is emptied first. When you publish Rh will only upload changed files unless you have Republish All ticked. It will not delete files that are no longer required. Thus YOU could get Rh to just upload the changed files if you had access to the customer's servers, which I doubt you have.

Similarly your developers could use software to do the same but I suspect what they want is to send a package containing only the changed files and where the customer installs them. That would require knowing in advance what is on the customer servers and I don't think there is a practical way of doing that.

Thanks so much for hanging in here. Here are the details. I have a web application used by 20,000+ users and for each web page I have a help document published in a RoboHelp WebHelp Pro merged project. If users need to access the help document for any web page in my application there is a link on the web page directing them to the particular RoboHelp Project help document. I am doing this currently in RH7, and the link for each document is defined by the Map. For example, http:/<RoboHelp Server>/roboapi.asp?context=143 (this URL works)

The server that houses my RoboHelp Server has reached end of life and with the new server refresh we are upgrading to RH11 and RoboServer 9. We installed RoboServer 9 and I upgraded my RH7 projects to RH10 and then to RH11, and we have installed the recent updates to both. We can access the RH11 merged projects on the new server, we are just trying to get the Map ID functionality to work as it did on RH7. I have tried the following URL, http://<New RoboServer>:8080/robohelp/server?project=WLI&area=WLIs&ctxid=143

and this does not work. My Project Name is WLI, the Area is WLIs and the Map ID is 143. Unfortunately, your post shows a generic string and I can't really grasp what you are asking. The error could be anything.

Perhaps it will help if I give some examples.

Here are some common CSH calls to show examples of the syntax:

Context Sensitive Help call with RoboHelp Server 9 (WebHelp Pro)

Here is the syntax of forming the help topic call to a Map ID number.

http://<servername>:<portnumber>/<contextname>/server?area=<areaname>&prj=<robohelpprojectname>&c txid=<Map ID>&wnd=<windowname>

Anything in angle brackets means you would substitute your actual project information.

Some assumptions in this scenario:

You are using the defaut "context" name, robohelp.

The <windowname> property is optional and created by the Author in the client app under Project Setup pod (Window). If not defined, the topic will appear in a default window.

So this is what a "real" string might look like:

http://localhost:8080/robohelp/server?area=general&prj=HumanResources&ctxid=1&wnd=CSHWindow

Finally, be sure you have all RoboHelp 11 client and RoboHelp Server 9 "updates" installed:

Bookmarks in Dropdown Text Not Working in RH10

I have seen several posts about bookmarks in dropdown text, but can't find anything specific to what's happening in RH10 - other than someone got it to work... but yet it isn't working for me. If there's a post that speaks directly to the issue, can you please point me to that discussion. I'm so sorry for posting if there is already an answer floating around out there.

In the meantime: I know I have done this with a competitor's HAT, but wondering how to set it up to work or if it's possible. I have information in dd text that contains a bookmark that is referenced in other places (outside the dd and perhaps outside the actual topic). But it's not opening the drop down text... in fact, it's not even being recognized. I see the bookmark in the Project Manager pod, but if I view my build Webhelp project and click on the link that should take me to the dd information, nothing happens. Not only does it NOT open the dropdown text, it doesn't even take me to the dropdown hotspot.

Is there a way to get the dd text to automatically open when the reference link is clicked? AGAIN, my apologies if this is already posted - and yep, I even looked on Peter's site and couldn't find this specific info.

I am not sure. In RH7 I used the Map ID tool and have mapped 200+. These are called by a web application such as, http://<server<http://%3cserver> name>/roboapi.asp?context=Map ID

I have upgrade my RH7 projects to RH10 and then to RH11 and I need to be able to call the Map IDs. Also, when users call needing application support on a particular topic I will send them the above URL, with the appropriate Map ID, so they can click and get right to the topic.

Hello again,

I'm using RH10 under TFS. Previously when I published my merged project, parent and two child projects, once I published the parent, the published file structure was Parent/mergedProjects/Child 1 and Parent/mergedProjects/Child 2 (note the spaces: my xpj files are called Child 1.xpj and Child 2.xpj). I have been berated for having fragile links (my only excuse is I'm completely self taught with anything web and RH based) and am trying to get rid of the spaces, so I changed the publish path in the two child projects to not have any spaces, thought that would do it. I do what I've learned here (thanks, Peter!) and publish my parent, then each of the child projects. The problem is that the parent is publishing both child projects at the same time and publishing an old version of the project without my latest changes, with the wrong folder names. I'm very frustrated. I think it has to do with the fact that my .xpj files have spaces in them and that's where it's taking the folder names from when I define the two child projects in the parent TOC. If, during that process, I pick the Child 1.xpj file and then where it says Project Name, I enter Child1, it then creates three folders under mergedProject: Child 1, Child 2 and Child1.

Why is the parent publishing all this old stuff? As far as I know, it should only be publishing itself and setting up the mergedProject folder so that I can publish the child projects which then create their own folders during the publish, if they don't exist before.

If it is the .xpj that is used as the name of the mergedProject child folder, can I rename that file so there are no spaces in it? Project is under TFS version control and the documentation here says I can't if it is under version control. Again, if that's the issue, can I just remove it from version control and then rename the project in order to change the .xpj file name?

Same principle would apply – only compile & distribute the changed files in the output. These self-extracting installer programs are quite smart in figuring out where to place the contents of their packages.

Are you talking about groups of open topics?

Or are you instead referring to the arrangement of the Pods in RoboHelp?

If it's the former, you should probably submit a wish form to ask for it. ( http://www.adobe.com/go/wish )

If it's the latter, click in the upper right corner of RoboHelp and save your workspace using a custom name.

Amebr - you hit the nail on the head... i want to apologize to everyone for all this mass hysteria...but this has been a freaking rollercoaster... one day they are happy with the plan, the next day they decided they want to complicate it more... So now my job is to find out how viable and how tricky and perhaps how dangerous it will be to send out JUST the files that have been changed. Especially for CSH!

Anyone have any experience with this or have any advice? Peter? I suspect you might know how this might work... are they any pitfalls to watch out for.. I just have this fear of sending out a few files from an entire project... Altho, it appears when I publish, ONLY the files that have been edited in some way show a new date.. that includes non-topic files - so i'm assuming sending all those will keep the TOC, Index, and Search features working properly... as well as incoming and outgoing links from an edited topic?

Another question would be how to handle new images in a project... as the image folder tends to be the largest, i don't want to have to send the entire image folder... Thoughts...???? Advice? Jeff? Peter? Amebr? Bueller? Bueller? Bueller....?

It sounds like internet/network access might be extremely limited (patient sites)? Possibly also bandwidth might be an issue?

(If neither of those are an issue, and all software is installed as part of a corporate-style common desktop environment, then I wouldn't have thought deploying the full help each time would be a problem.)

Or possibly the help includes procedures or information that may change without the application itself changing?

Perhaps using a comparison tool like Beyond Compare could work to let your devs build a package of just the changed files (it compares the content of the files, not just timestamps). You would have to keep a full copy of last version output, to run the comparison on, obviously. That *should* pick up changes to toc, search, index files, as well as topics, so t hat search etc all work correctly while reducing the size of the package that needs to be distributed.

Then build these into a self-extracting zip file as described above.

You would need to test, though, to make sure there aren't any unintended consequences.

All-

I've found that the tab groups (in my case "vertical" tab groups) that I set in a RH project/session aren't being remembered. When I close and reopen a project, I have to reset my tab groups. Is there a way to make tab groups re-appear according to how they were last configured?

(I could be wrong, but it seems to me I've only had this problem recently. Perhaps I unchecked a "remember' setting?!)

Yes, thank you. I meant "left" side.
You were spot-on! The period was indeed the problem. Of course, I re-discovered an issue I found long ago: When the user Renames a style, the style is removed from all entities that it was formerly applied to, without warning (and, I believe, without undo). Luckily, I was only doing a test.

I could be wrong here, but what you shared shows the image "smooshed against" the LEFT side not the right.

I'm wondering if the issue here is your naming of the style. I note there seems to be a period in it. You might try again and ensure the style name doesn't contain a period. I'm thinking that may be confusing things.

BTW when you said this was a fat client application, that infers that there’s a server involved in this with clients attached to it – what you’re describing is just a straight install on to each machine as if I had bought Word or Excel and installed it on my machines at home.

Doing a differential build of only the topics that change would be tougher, since regenerating wipes the \!SSL!\WebHelp\ folder each time & I think dates all the files the same date/time. You might have some luck with the publishing part of the SSL – there’s something in there about only updating the changed files, but I’ve never used it. You’d have to copy the output into some location, update only the changed files, determine which ones they were and then compile an updater to package & deliver them to the right spot on the laptop.

Did they tell you what tool they use for installing the software?

architects, here is the response:

What we need to determine is if there is any way to manage the help where

change sets can be sent out rather than entire help file. I’m not sure how

this might work with robohelp. Our stumbling block is not us deploying to

the customer but once the customer gets it they need to deploy to all the

laptops their staffs take to patient sites. Them having to download to all

those laptops every SP is the issue. Check with your contacts and see if

they have any recommendations. We’ll talk in more detail next week.

DID I MENTION... HELP ME PLEASE!!! If there is no way to figure this out,

we will be stuck with the current situation - 1 set of functionality = 1

chm = 1 loooong scrolling page... so our total help is over a GB... and

it's UGLY, UGLY, UGLY from every perspective!!!

The developers set things up to look for a connection. If it exists, they take the user to your server. If it does not, they take the user to the local version. A dialog could tell users that because there is no connection, they will be shown the local version - optional.

Users would not download anything. Local copy would be set up at installation. Updating between versions is optional as long as users are made aware your web server version is more up to date.

Well... that would be ideal, but i think the shear number of users that

would have to be made aware might be daunting for these folks...

Also, how would it work for downloading... would the users have to do it

themselves or what?
