Update: Merged projects work again when I create a new project in RH11.

I'm beginning to suspect corruption in some file. We switched servers a month or so ago, and something may have gotten hosed in the transfer, which is may be why the problem affected multiple projects. At any rate, I have a lot of rework to do, recreating every project from scratch, but it's better than the alternative. Thanks

Do you mean am I applying conditional build tags to the merged projects? (no) Or is there some other way I might be "excluding" them that I'm inadvertently applying? (help!)

I tested them in RH11, and they still don't work. I'm going to test some shell projects in RH11 to see if they work - if they do I may need to just recreate the projects in the later version (not a bad idea - when I went from RH9 to RH10 I found I couldn't delete baggage files I'd uploaded in the earlier version, so I've been bracing myself for this all along)

I've worked with merged projects for years, and never encountered this kind of problem before, so it may be that something went corrupt. In multiple projects (...?). Your SSL suggestion is a good one. I'm going to try that if the new RH11 project doesn't work.

The ePub script is older, starting in RoboHelp 10 as a type of tryout. In RH11, Adobe introduced the SSL with ePub 3. And the script is still available. That's why there are two ways of creating an ebook.

After 11.0.3 was released, I emailed Adobe to confirm this was fixed and haven't received a response.

I haven't been able to reproduce this error since upgrading to 11.0.3....

Aha! Thanks. I believe you answered my question. I can generate for epub 3 using the ssl, but I still wonder why the ebook generation script has been setup for 2.0.1. Bear with me please - I am new at Robohelp :-)

Are you excluding the merged project from the TOC in your output?

Try the following to troubleshoot: Duplicate your working SSL. In the duplicate, change one thing, generate and check whether it still works. If all goes well, you will find one setting that breaks it. I hope this will help you to identify the problem.

What do you mean by 'sample job'?

When you use the SSL, you should get ePub 3, if you use the ebook generation script, you will get 2.0.1.

I cannot figure out how to make sure Robohelp 11 uses Epub 3 as the default standard for generating epubs. In the Single Source Layouts dock Ebook (Primary Layout) has been set to Epub 3. But when opening a sample job and using Generate, the Epub standard is set to Epub 2.0.1. Why is that and can I change it and make sure it uses epub 3?

My latest tests were to delete the folder that I uploaded Field to, and try again, uploading the parent and one of the merged projects again. No dice.

Then I used the single source layout for Call_Center, and selected output for both that and Field. No dice. So it isn't even the single source layout that's the problem.

I'm running out of ideas. Thanks.

I have a project that needs to display the same merged projects from different single source layouts.

The project is Retail Sales. The single source layouts are Call Center and Field. Both single source layouts display the same two merged projects. Some of the topics I publish from each single source layout need to be different, both within the merged projects, and in the main parent project. I control them with conditional build tags.

The Call Center single source layout works. Both the merged projects display correctly. Blocked topics are blocked appropriately. Everything is wonderful, birds are chirping, and honeybees are gathering nectar. There is a rainbow.

However, the Field single source layout does NOT work. NONE of the merged projects display. I haven't even gotten to test the conditional build tags because I can't get the merged projects to work.

I have created new single source layouts to replace the Field multiple times, to no avail. I have checked and double-checked output paths (one goes to Call_Center and one goes to Field), both to my PC and to the publishing server. They both go to a different folder on the same server, so it apparently isn't server-related.

I went through the single source layout dialogs for both parent and child projects screen by screen, taking screen shots and printing them out. I compared them side-by-side, and identified a very few very superficial differences (like "apply the same style sheet to all topics"). I changed these minor things in the "DOESN'T WORK" single source layout, and published, then checked the output before addressing the next minor difference. Nothing changed.

I also have other projects that don't permit me to create merged projects AT ALL. And the programmers can't troubleshoot with me until Friday.

Does anyone have any thoughts what might be the problem? Getting merged projects to work almost seems totally random, and I can't identify why that is.

I have RH11 installed on a new PC, but haven't taken delivery yet. Is this something RH11 might address?

I believe that while the error message says "Word 2000 or newer", it should really say "Word 2000 to 2010". RoboHelp 10 doesn't work with Word 2013 or higher. I had to install Word 2010 in order to export to Word. I'm guessing this is also the reason why you aren't able to import from 2013. I think the only "fix" is to install Word 2010. Maybe the experts here will prove me wrong.

Hi Rick.

No, it's not in project root, it's actually in a folder called 'stylesheets' (not the imaginary RH one). It used to display under that folder, but keeps vanishing. The name is procedures.css, so nothing funny with characters.

Over the weekend I had a brainwave.

It looks like it might be a manifestation of this old image bug, as creating a new folder causes the stylesheet to display again. And deleting the cpd makes it vanish. (At least I now know it wasn't caused by some odd code caused by many years of RH upgrades.)

The CPD file is one that can be deleted with the project closed, Rh recreates it if missing when opening. Also it is a file that should not be checked in.

Easiest way to test is to take a non-production machine & load the trial on it, then run a copy of your RH8 project on it – watch what happens

Thanks, Jeff. So you're saying that 'lists' may be affected. I'll certainly make a note of that. Can you tell me more about how they are affected? Was it a matter of indention? Numbering; size of initial or final bullet; background old code that needed to be removed? I remember several years ago when converting some old MS Word documents into RoboHelp that there were the nasty kadavs that needed to be removed. That was quite time consuming. It wouldn't be anything like that would it?

Thank you for your quick response, Rick. I understand the necessity of making a backup and opening the project to see what may have happened, then making adjustments accordingly.

I was hoping there were users out there who have gone through a conversion and would have had some practical things to look out for that they ran into when converting their documents. Has anyone had that experience? And what did you find?

Hi there

Normally the process is pretty straightforward. You just make a backup copy of your original project, then open one of them using RoboHelp 11.

Exactly what may need tweaking will depend on what has happened to the project before upgrading. Unfortunately there is no standard list of "always tweak this" or "always do that". You simply have to upgrade, then test to see what may or may not need tweaking.

We are considering upgrading from RoboHelp HTML 9 to RoboHelp HTML5 11. With all of our output files accessible by our customers, we want to ensure our content is always available to address their questions. When doing an upgrade to RH 11 will opening and outputting the files be seamless or will the files need tweaks to get them ready for publication? How much time would it take to adjust one page, if it's needed?

Any insight/experience you have with this topic to share is most appreciated.

Hello again

You change the image using the Skin editor. Click View > Pods > Project Set-up, then expand the Skins folder and double-click the skin you are using for the project.

Select About. then click the Pencil icon and you finally use the file folder icon to browse to and select the image.

Hi there

Note that you do have a significant amount of control if you want. For example, you can substitute your own image to replace the Powered By image. Perhaps your company logo? And when the image is clicked, another little window pops up and you are also able to customize that by supplying other images and information. And if you REALLY want to go rogue, you can create your own HTML page that opens when the user clicks the toolbar icon.

I think I figured this out. I was trying to capture a html page within an online Help guide, and it would not work. It did work on regular documents.

Disappearing screen elements in Responsive HTML 5 output

I recently installed the update to RoboHelp HTML 11, which was supposed to fix a lot of problems with Responsive HTML 5 output issues. However, a new issue has just cropped up out of nowhere and I have no idea why it's happening.

When I generate Responsive HTML 5 output for my help system, the following items are missing from the screen in the browser:

- The vertical separator bar that separates the TOC from the help content window

- All the "hover" buttons (the dark versions of the TOC, Search, Glossary, Home, and Print buttons that appear when you hover over them or when that page is selected)

Also, the Show/Hide button is visible (even though the separator bar is not), but it does not function at all.

The output was generating just fine, with no such problems, until just a couple of days ago. This struck out of nowhere. Does anyone have a clue what is causing this or how to fix it?

Does the project have folders inside? If so, maybe the CSS file is tucked inside a folder and that is why it's not listed in the project root?

What is the CSS file name? Maybe there is an odd character in there somewhere?

Hi all,

My stylesheet has decided it no longer wants to display within Robohelp. It used to display in Project Files > stylesheets and in Windows Explorer it still does, however in Robohelp, the folder "looks" empty.

I've tried changing between the two Project Manager views and checked the Show/Hide Files dialog box which has stylesheets ticked. I've tried deleting the cpd file.

The previous author had issues with it vanishing on occasion, but it always returned, I think after rebooting, usually. But I tried this too, in conjunction with deleting the cpd and still no luck getting it to show.

I know I can open it with through Windows Explorer in Notepad, and I know I can go into Topic Properties and click the Edit button when I want to open the style editor, but it's much quicker to use the right-click menu

Does anyone have any ideas about coaxing my shy stylesheet back?

AutoScroll in RoboScreenCapture does not work

When I try to use the autoscroll feature in RoboScreenCapture it stops before the end of the screen and only captures what is visible on the screen. What can I do about this? I am using RoboScreenCapture 2. Thank you.

RoboHelp 10 - Table Preferred Column Width Issue

I converted a RoboHelp 9 project to RoboHelp 10 and noticed that Column 1 in all tables has a preferred width setting of 93% and it is not allowing me to remove this setting. When I uncheck the Preferred width checkbox and click OK, then go back to the Table Properties>Column tab, the Preferred width checkbox is checked again with a width setting of 93%. The column width is not specified in the HTML, it is set to fit to the contents (<col />). The odd thing is that Column 1 only displays this way in Design view. When previewing and publishing the topic, it displays correctly (fits to contents). This however makes editing content in tables extremely difficult in Design view. Any assistance is appreciated.

Also using 9.0.2.271, I had exactly the same problem: open project, double-click a topic in the Topic List pane... crash.

However, immediately after opening the project I had Windows 7's blue 'busy' doughnut symbol constantly flashing under the mouse pointer. This is described (for RH8) in Peter Grainge's description on his excellent website (RoboHelp > Opening RoboHelp Projects). The same topic mentions the .hhp file, so I checked the contents of mine...

At the very end, in the [MERGE FILES] section, it listed two other .chm files; one which was supposed to be there, and one which was not (Dummy.chm). I had merged Dummy.chm only during the early testing stages of my project, and had long since removed all references to it from my project. I have no idea why it was still listed in the .hhp file.

I deleted the reference to Dummy.chm from the .hhp file and regenerated the project... and Dummy.chm reappeared in the .hhp file! After deep-searching my project files using NotePad++, one remaining reference to Dummy.chm was also listed in the .xpj file:

So I manually removed those lines and saved the .xpj using NotePad++, reopened the project using RoboHelp, and regenerated. The rogue reference to Dummy.chm is now gone. I have opened, saved, and closed the project several times and it now seems to be reliable.

Probable cause of bug: I had recently performed a cleanup of my project folder and deleted Dummy.chm, but unknown to me I suspect RoboHelp was still looking for it when opening the project, hence the permanent 'busy' doughnut and the crash when trying to do anything else, like opening a topic.

So the issue was that I was not presented with the option to generate a request code, and therefore could not follow the offline activation process to generate a response code. I installed RoboHelp on a virtual machine behind a firewall and was connecting via Remote Desktop, which seems to be the cause of why I was not being presented the option to generate a request code. After I connected to the virtual machine through vSphere Client and then started RoboHelp, I was then able to generate the request code and follow the procedure as described. Perhaps a rooky error to try and install and activate via Remote Desktop.

It depends on SharePoint security settings. If SharePoint is configured to let the browser open html files, it will work fine. You can just dump WebHelp without problems. And you don't need version control there. (Though you can check in/out an entire library through the library options.)

ASPX is a good alternative. I believe that if you choose 2010 output, it will work fine on 2013 as well.

So for people working in commercial organisations, what options are there to work through this issue of obtaining a request code and activating RoboHelp 11? I installed RoboHelp 11, several times today, thinking I missed the option described in this article: Offline Activation

I cannot even launch RoboHelp having supposedly successfully installed the product as I cannot get past the sign in screens, which obviously fail because there is not internet connection.

Mark Of The Web (MOTW) is an option that is designed to allow content to display in the browser. It's IE specific.

When you generate WebHelp, the "recipe" used (found in your "recipe box" or the Single Source Layouts pod" determines how WebHelp behaves. Depending on the selections made for your WebHelp recipe, there are different bits of JavaScript that are added to each of the HTML pages that end up in the output. MOTW will cause one additional line of code to be added.

When the Microsoft IE browser loads a page from the local file system (anything beginning with a drive letter) it will normally balk at things such as JavaScript because they are deemed to be a security risk. MOTW is designed to prevent that from happening.

The down side is that links to things such as Word documents or PDF documents will not work.

Normally, once you copy the WebHelp to a web server (NOT a network server) these links then work fine.

See, when a Web server presents the content, it ends up in the Temporary Internet Files location. And by default, that location is "safe", because the operating system has walls around it that prevent content from accessing your local file system. If the content were allowed to access the local file system, they could do some pretty nasty things to you.
