I do not think the Master widget is the answer in this case.

Look for the option in the drag and drop wizard to add drag sources to groups. Tthen any item in that group can be counted as a correct match with the target.

I purchased the Master Widget from Infosemantics a few months back but between my day job and my schooling for my ID Certification from UC Irvine Extension, I have not had the time to figure it out.

I thought there would be an easier way but as usual, nothing is a quick fix anymore. Even when you think your just missing a simple step.

My solution would be using the Master widget of Infosemantics, combined with their Drag&Drop interactive widget. But only for SWF output.

About the difference between a simple and an advanced (or shared) action: Why choose Standard over Simple action? - Captivate blog tries to explain that, and there is also a link to a Youtube video with an example.

Whereas Rick, Captiv8r explains how you can use both actions Success and After Last attempt for a click box, I'm not sure that this will solve your problem. Maybe I understand it differently? Do you really need to increment or toggle that user variable? Are you using it later?

Locking/Unlocking Table of Contents Navigation in CP8

Hi all,

My client wants to have the Table of Contents lock/unlock for slides that were visited by the learner. So they shouldn't be able to skip ahead using the TOC, but they can click on any previous slide they've already visited and be able to jump to it. I know that with CP8, there is a new System Variable that makes this easier to accomplish than before, but how are you setting it up? On slide exit? And how are you writing up the action?

Okay, in absorbing this more, it would appear you are using Click Box objects, but you don't really understand how they work (other than the fact that clicking them produces a result).

So here's the deal. When you have a Click Box object, a click anywhere INSIDE the outline of the Click Box should carry out the step assigned to the On Success action. And a click anywhere OUTSIDE the outline would constitute a failure.

Now normally, infinite attempts is configured for these beasties. But if you instead only allowed a single attempt, you could define a different action that would be carried out if the user clicks OUTSIDE the Click Box area.

So I'd delete the one that you used to cover the entire screen area. Likely, it's on top in the timeline (and in front of the other one) and therefore carrying out its own "on success" action when you are trying to click the area that would be correct.

I've isolated an instance in which using an On Success to Assign a variable in response to clicking a click zone produces a different (and unusable) effect than if the On Success triggers a dedicated Advanced Action whose sole code is to make the exact same Assignment. I'd like to understand why I cannot rely on the Assign action and if possible get a fix or workaround. Here's my situation.

On a slide I have two click zones: one for the correct area to click and the other encompassing the entire screen to trap for wrong clicks. I want to keep track of the fact that the user made a wrong click and so I want to assign a -1 value to a variable so that I can know whether to assign points to the user or not when they finally do click the right area. In other words, I do NOT want to move on to the next slide until they have clicked the correct area. Yet when I set a On Success to Assign, Captivate moves on to the next slide. Contrast this to what happens if the same click zone has an On Success of Advanced Action that has one line which is that same Assign to a variable of -1. In this case, the assignment also happens properly, but Captivate stays on the slide the way I want. What's going on here and what can I do about it? The way things are now, I have had to make nearly 100 individual Advanced Actions that do nothing but make a variable assignment, something that would be much easier if I could just use the Assign action.

I'm using Captivate 7.0.1 for Windows and can't upgrade to 8 for the foreseeable future.

Does anyone know the best way to create a test item where the learner has to place a check mark in the correct cells and hit submit to succeed.
I was using a drag and drop but I am lost on step three.

I am using the check marks as drag sources, square shapes located in all cells will the correct cell/box assigned as the correct drop target.

The issue is when I get to step three, how do I allow the user to drag ANY checkmark (drag target) to the correct cell/box (drop target). When I get to step 3, I have to assign each individual checkmark to ONE specific cell/box and I want the learner to be able to drag any checkmark, as long as it is dropped in a designated drop target.

If there is another way I should approach this test item instead of drag and drop, I am open to any suggestions.

Passing the SSO student identity could possibly be done through custom JavaScripting. The JavaScript would need to set a Captivate User Variable, then that variable can be sent to the spreadsheet.

Captivate 7 - HTML5 - Project to External MP4 - Back to Project at Quiz slide

Hi,

I am new to using Captivate and my company has me using Captivate 7. I am tasked with creating a project (blank project) importing a video, and then returning to the Captivate project to take a quiz. The video quality is not good in HTML5 or MP4 when imported into the project. I have alternatively, linked within the slide a button to the HTML5 video, and successfully launched the video with perfect quality. I have created a button within the HTML5 video to go back to the original project. I see an option to go back to the project, but not to the specific slide where the quiz begins. What is the best way to accomplish this?

Hi Jim. On the face of it the Google LMS Widget looks like a good solution for our needs. Out of interest, do you think it would be possible to pass the students' identities to the widget from their single-sign-on in to the CMS (the SiteCore CMS uses MongoDB) rather than have them sign in to each Captivate?

Please forgive my fishing around for solutions. I'm trying to filter through things before asking our tech team to investigate thoroughly. Part of the struggle here is to present a seamless experience, so that students enter the SiteCore CMS site, which is mainly focused on study skills and advice, and can then watch short Captivate presentations with ungraded 'check your knowledge' type quizzes embedded. We want to be able to identify the individuals that have participated and completed the courses in order to determine popularity of the content and to cross-reference to their academic performance in the programmes of study, and ideally to feed this back to their student profile so that they can see how much of the value-added content they have completed. We can't simply do this by 'page views'. This is separate from their Blackboard learning experience.

Thanks Rod. I'll have a look in to it. I managed to get it work with Moodle. It's just the presentation issue that's a problem. We need to present it in the same shell as the rest of the site.

Not using SCORM. You might be able to use AICC standard instead. Captivate supports that as well and it allows you to have your content on a different domain to the LMS.

The courses are delivered through SiteCore CMS, so not an LMS, but only because they are outside the academic classes that we deliver via Blackboard. Could the courses be presented in the CMS shell, whilst referring to a Blackboard database?

Maybe not. You never mentioned in your original post that you were prepared to consider using an LMS. Yet this type of software is essentially a database-driven website that communicates with Captivate course content using the SCORM standard JavaScript API.

So is there some reason why you don't go that route? Captivate IS certainly capable of doing this part out of the box.

What you are asking for here is NOT a trivial exercise.

Unlike some other Adobe software tools Captivate currently has no built-in way to bind to a datasource and do what you are looking for.

Any solution that would do this would need to be custom programmed for you. You would need AS3 or JavaScript expertise for the client side, and relevant scripting expertise in whatever server-side technology that would be required.

I need to link my Captivate courses to a database in order to track individual students' participation and completion of activities. I am less interested in capturing grades than simply recording whether they took the formative quizzes and read through to the end of the presentations.

Any help greatly appreciated. A fair amount of searching has not lead me to an answer on the web and my Captivate 7 'e-Learning Uncovered' book has absolutely zero information on this.

I'm getting great answers here, so....

I've created a drag and drop in which student drags three different types of fractions into the correct drop targets.

I've checked 'send drag source to original position but the drag object stays wherever it is put. I would like it to pop right back immediately if dragged to the incorrect drop target.

Is there something else to be done to make the drag source pop right back to its original position immediately if not dropped into the correct drop target?

I think you would accomplish it by creating a variable, then using an Advanced Action that sets the variable and visits the slide in question. Then on slide enter, have an Advanced Action that will check the value of the variable and if it's set, reveal a hidden button.

Greetings!

When teaching a new subject, there is one section in which the student may require remediation from some previous slide.

I would like them to be able to go to that slide and then return to the current slide using a return button, but i only want that button to appear if the student arrived from that other slide.

This is much like the captivate remediation except the student is not arriving from a quiz question.

Any suggestions please?

In former versions the shape buttons did not pause by default and you had to check the pausing option. In CP8 however the shape buttons do pause by default as Rick shows (and I'm always replacing buttons by shape buttons) at 1.5secs. But you have to look at the timeline and check if this is the proper time to pause? As I understood from another thread you want this button to appear only at the end, be sure that the pausing is within the timeline of the slide.

Well, personally I don't use them all that much. To my knowledge, if you enabled the button function it *SHOULD* pause. You might want to double-check by looking at the timing tab.

If your "Next" button is a button object, it should actually pause the slide until it has been clicked or until another action causes play to resume.

Are you not seeing that behavior?

TOC display and YouTube Question

Hello All,

I am working in Captivate 8, and I am new to using a TOC. Is there a way to make a folder or group name in the TOC clickable so that Captivate jumps to that topic and plays it's slides? I am trying to avoid naming every individual slide, and don't want the TOC to show "Slide 14" "Slide 15" etc.

Also, wondering if it is possible to publish a project to YouTube that retains the TOC's ability to allow the user to navigate?

No way. This is a static learning interaction, no event that could be used eventually. Personally I prefer offering reading material that is engaging over looking for a way to push the learner to look (reading doesn't mean he understands or grabs it) at all the stuff. But that is my teacher's past, if student doesn't read your stuff, something is wrong with the stuff, not with the student.

If you have to force, you'll have to find another way than the accordion interaction .

Is there a way to force a user to read, or at least view,

Publish a Captivate course with HTML5 and Scorm

This is the scenario. We have a Captivate 7 module. One of the slides will have an HTML5 animation on it. The module also has quiz questions. We have used Adobe Captivate 7 App Packager to include the HTML5 animation and publish the course. When we upload the course to our LMS (LearnShare), nothing shows up. If we upload the HTML5 published course without any Scorm settings, it works. But we obviously need the Scorm settings on. Can't figure out how to package this thing to have it include the animation and the Scorm settings and work on the LMS.

I miss some information: will you publish to SWF or/and to HTML5?

If it is only to SWF, the Eventhandler widget of InfoSemantics is a great way to use rollover and rollout events. It certainly could help you to accomplish your goal, but it is not free.

The only rollover event available in Captivate is for a rollover slidelet. It can trigger an action, that could allow you to put a semi-transparent image over the circle. You don't need the slidelet itself (drag it off stage) but only the rollover area.

Ok, so this is a possible solution, but not completely accomplishing what I'd hoped. First, unless I'm missing something, this solution would require the user to click and I actually want the action to happen on rollover. I also want to be able to reuse this without requiring a lot of rewriting of advanced actions, which is something I didn't mention before but is important.

The genius of the original solution was that it used the native Rollover feature in Captivate. It just also allowed you to see what you had visited and what you hadn't. Any other ideas about how this might be accomplished? I appreciate any thoughts because I certainly have failed miserably at figuring it out.

Hi there

Without seeing exactly what was going on in that project it's difficult to say exactly. But I would think if you used basic Button objects you could easily accomplish it.

Image buttons have three images. One is presented as the button sits on the slide. A second is presented when the mouse passes over the button. And a third briefly appears as the button is clicked.

So if you used a basic button with the desired images for the moused over and not moused over part, you would get the rollover change you want. To get the persistent state, you could have another button in the same identical location but have it hidden. The hidden button would have the image representing the visited state. Then you would create actions that would perform the button functionality (open a PDF, or visit a slide or whatever) and part of the advanced action would hide the original button and show the "visited" version.

Basically, you insert Random Question slides into the Film Strip. Try right-clicking one and choosing to duplicate.

Random Question slides draw from a pool but beyond that are never actually part of a pool.
