Premier Elements 12 / Video stops while I'm doing other things / how can I change this?

Hello and first sorry for my bad english, hope you understand my question anyway...

While I'm using Premier Elements 12 I would love to do different things in the same time. For instance I watch over a Video and watch the full length like 30 Minutes... and every 5 Minuts I have to correct something with the program. So I use facebook in the same time. But everytime I click at the facebook window, Premier elements stops the play of the video. For me it's annoying cause most oft the things I have to correct are related with the sound not the video itself... so it pause while I'm answering a friend and when I start it again... Is there any possibility to let the video move on while I do other things? I didn't find anything But maybe somebody has a clou for me?

Thank you very much

Lumida

bluray authoring in premiere elements

I downloaded the latest version of adobe premiere elements over a month ago to try it out before deciding on a purchase. I was not happy with the video capture section because it seems all videos are captured with a 4:3 aspect ratio - even 16:9 source videos! so I proceeded to uninstall premiere elements. However, I have since decided that a purchase is possible if the bluray authoring section meets my requirements. It has been over a month since uninstallation so I cannot install again without purchasing premiere elements. Therefore, I have a few questions which when answered will enable me decide whether or not to make a purchase. my questions are as follows: can bluray video be authored with both mpeg 2 and avc h264 codecs? If so, can these codecs be used for both standard definition( 720x576) and high definition(1280x720; 1920x1080) resolution video? Is a range of bitrate provided for these codecs for example between 5 and 15 mbps or just already preset bitrate values for example 5,7,10, 12 mbps?( please specify bitrate values) For audio, are both dolby digital (ac3) and lpcm provided and if so what bitrates are used?

Hello Hakan,

yesterday I found a more easy way to design subtitles für Premerie

Elements 12.

Just create a new Image in Photoshop Elemenst and select HD 1920+1080

resolution.

Then chose a solid background-Colur an design your Subtitle, where you want

to place it on screen.

After that save (JPG or PSD) and import this subtitle to Premiere Elements.

After inserting Premiere Elements asks me if I want to make the solid

background transparent.

This way ist quiet easy. And one more advantage is, that you can design

several subtitels in Photoshop in the same layout by using the

layer-function.

This way works fine for me. Average at best. If you filmed in 920p it should be a lot crisper than that. You're still losing a lot of quality somewhere.

I haven't figured this out myself yet either. I'm using a GoPro Hero 3+ Silver edition, editing in Premiere Elements 9, and uploading vids in a variety of setting from 1080 x 1920 @ 30fps, and some others at 720 x 1280 @ 120fps (which Elements 9 does not seem to cater for 120 fps at all, so my slow mo shots suffer).

I'm considering learning to use GoPro's Cineform Studio instead, even though I've heard really bad things about it, because Premiere elements 9 seems so problematic when it comes to finding the right presets for GoPro footage.

This is an example of a video I uploaded filmed in 720 x 1280 @ 120 fps, and tbh I think the quality of it is better than your linked 920p one above. Wonder what you think.

One of my issues is there are sooo many options in Premiere Elements 9 that despite my efforts I sometimes can't remember how I got previous good results. Reallly frustrating!

Comments and feedback welcome. Good luck with your editing dude.

PrE Can't Find My DVD/BD Burner - Why?

You have a multi-drive (DVD, or BD drive and Burner) installed on you computer, and it appears fine in the Control Panel>System>Hardware profile. Other programs can use it, but PrE, or Encore cannot find the burner, and reports such. What is going on here? Well, there are “packet-writing” modules in Roxio, or Nero, that can "hook" the burner. If those particular modules are installed with other parts of the programs, then they will launch at boot-up, and change how the OS sees the burner. For Roxio, the module is DLA, and for Nero, it's InCD. These are packet -writing modules and will turn the burner into a virtual HDD (Hard Disk Drive) in the eyes of the OS, thus allowing one to Drag-n-Drop files to a blank DVD/CD, just like it was HDD. These modules load at boot-up, and basically tell the OS that the burner is a HDD. When Adobe programs attempt to burn to a disc, they cannot find any burners, as the OS is now displaying them as HDD's. There are a couple of ways to handle this:

1.) Uninstall these modules - usually, it is easier to do a complete uninstall of the full product, and then do a Custom Install, of just what one needs, omitting either the DLA, or InCD module. It was once the default for these programs to install everything, UNLESS a Custom Install was chosen. Many have reported that this has been changed with later versions, and now to get the modules, plus others, one MUST do the Custom Install. The last version of Nero that I did install was not that way, but newer versions' installers could well be different. This will mean that Adobe programs can see and access the burner(s), with no problem, but that one will not have the Drag-n-Drop function of packet-writing.

2.) If one does want Drag-n-Drop, then the Adobe products will not be able to work with the burner(s), but other programs can. One such burning utility is the free ImgBurn. It looks beyond what the OS is reporting and knows that, say D:\ is really a burner, regardless of how it has been hooked by DLA, or InCD. One would just use the Adobe program to Burn to Folder. This Folder will be the full DVD-Video VIDEO_TS folder with the necessary files (mostly INF, BUP and VOB's) inside. It will be located on the user's HDD, where the Adobe program was directed to write it. Then, one would use ImgBurn (or another burning utility, like Nero, or Roxio, or CyberLink) to do the physical Burn to blank media in the burner. [Adobe Encore will also write an ISO (Image file), that can be handled by ImgBurn (or other utiltiy) to create the VIDEO_TS folder, or as an archive file. Some other Adobe programs cannot write to an ISO.]

Just having Roxio, or Nero, is not a sign that the packet-writing modules ARE installed, though they might be. It is just these modules that get in the way - not the rest of the program suite. *

There is a FAQ Entry from the Adobe Encore Forum, that is very good in explaining various software, etc., that can get in the way of using any Adobe program to burn to disc.

Some people wonder why, when the Burn to Folder and open up that folder, some of the files have an icon for programs like CyberLink's PowerDVD. Well, the reason for that is that these file types are registered with the OS for that, or a similar DVD software player. To play a DVD on your computer, you need to have such a software player installed. When you do that installation, it will register certain file types with the OS. If one has their multi-drive set to AutoPlay, then the OS will see these registered file types, and immediately launch that DVD software player, assuming that you will want to play the DVD-Video material. The reason that no Adobe program is registered is that none is a DVD software player - they are editors, or authoring programs, not players.

Here are some useful links to articles on the structure of the VOB files inside of the VIDEO_TS folder, and also on which brands of blank media are the best to use:

VOB's - Some Background

Blank Media Recommendations

Hope that this helps,

Hunt

* There are some other modules in Roxio and Nero, that can get in the way, though in a different way. These suites usually include little utilities that will monitor certain folders and folder types, looking for files that might need to be burned to disc. These are often referred to as "sniffers," or "watchers." They try to take the guesswork out of burning to disc, but sap resources, and constantly monitor any folder, that it "thinks" might be used to burn a DVD, surveying each and every file that is written to those folders. I find these modules pretty useless, as I know what I want to do with my folders and the files inside, and also remove/do not install these. Many have reported system crashes, or program hangs, when these modules spring into action. At the very least, they use computer resources that could be better invested in editing, or authoring.

Having more drives available, will still increase speed, but to a lesser degree, than going from one drive, up to two.

With two internal physical drives (no partitions), I would have a setup like this:

C:\ OS, programs (including Premiere), Windows Virtual Memory (Page File)

D:\ Projects, Media, Premiere Scratch Disks, Output/Export Files

With three internal physical drives, I would do similar, but with these changes:

C:\ OS, programs (including Premiere), Windows Virtual Memory (Page File)

D:\ Projects, Premiere Scratch Disks, Output/Export Files

E:\ Media Files

Note: one could swap the Media Files on E:\ for the Output/Export Files

With four internal physical drives, I would do similar, but with these changes:

C:\ OS, programs (including Premiere), Windows Virtual Memory (Page File)

D:\ Projects, Premiere Scratch Disks

E:\ Media Files

F:\ Output/Export Files

Now, if a RAID 0, or similar array comes into play, I would use those for E:\ & F:\ in the above scheme.

If one had, say one SSD, I would use it for C:\.

Now, with external drives, so long as the connection is fast, say FW-800, eSATA or USB 3.0, those could take up the slack, if one only had two internal physical drives, so in the last iteration, E:\ and F:\ could be fast externals.

Note: such I/O organization is not so much for safety, but for speed. For safety, I keep my original Video and Still Image Files (plus music, and SFX) on my NAS drive, which is in a RAID array, with reduncancy. I ONLY work with copies of those files, and Copy them from the NAS to the appropriate Project folder.

Hope that this helps make the decision on how to use the computer's drives, whether all are internal, or whether externals figure into the mix. As many of my Projects get migrated between separate computers, I sacrifice some speed, by having every Project on a fast external, along with a Copy of all Media, and all Scratch Disks. This means that I can just carry that external to my workstation, from my laptop, and when I Open that Project, I have everything there. If there is no migration, then the above layouts would provide the greatest performance.

Hunt

My Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3R motherboard has slots for at least 1 internal drive.

If you say yes external is needs to write end video what do you think of the Lacie 301543 D2 Quadra 2000 GB External? My motherboard has an eSATA-300 interface.Logical choice?

Thanks again.

Adjusting Audio Volume Levels

Often, one has Audio that is too loud, or too soft. Sometimes, they have added a music Track, that needs to drop down to clearly hear the dialog from another Clip. While there are Audio-editing programs, like Audition, SoundBooth, and even the free Audacity, PrE, or PrPro can handle such adjustment just fine. These adjustments can be made for the entire Clip, or can be Keyframed over time.

First method, and not one that I recommend, is to adjust the Audio Gain of the Audio Clip. This is done by either Rt-clicking on a separate Audio Clip, or by first Alt-clicking, and then Rt-clicking on a Muxed Audio Clip (Multiplexed with both Video and Audio in one file). Then, one would choose Audio Gain, and adjust that. This method will also allow one to then adjust the Volume by a greater amount, and has the bonus of increasing the Waveform Dislay vertically.

The next method is to look at the Audio Clip (or the Audio portion of a Muxed Clip), and click-drag on the yellow-orange “rubberband” for Volume, and move it up, or down. This can be Keyframed, but the next method is much better and more precise, in my estimation.

My first choice is to adjust the fixed Effect>Volume. This is done from the Effects Control Panel, and it is very easy to Keyframe these adjustments over time. This is much more accurate, and actually easier, than click-dragging the rubberbands in the Clip itself. Accessing the Effects Control Panel is slightly different, from PrE to PrPro. In PrE, one would Select the Audio Clip, then go to the Effects Tab, and choose Edit Effects, locating the Volume Effects and twirling it open to view the slider. In PrPro, if one does not already have the Effects Control Panel in a Pane in the GUI, it would be accessed from Window>Effects Control Panel. With the Audio Clip Selected, one would locate the fixed Volume Effect, twirl that open, and make the same adjustments, including Keyframes, if necessary. These will be Clip Keyframes, and will follow that Clip, where ever you move it. This is a difference from the next method.

My other choice would be to use the Audio Mixer (Window>Audio Mixer, if not open), and to automate the Volume settings. This is accomplished by playing the Timeline and adjusting the sliders for Volume for each Track. In PrPro, one would first set the Send to Write, or Touch, to make those adjustments, then switch back to Read, when done. There are no adjustable Sends in PrE, so one is always in Read, until adjustments are made, and then it’s set to Write, but you will not see this change. After you are done, you can playback the Timeline, and watch the slider(s) automatically move. These will be Track Keyframes, and will remain on the Track, regardless of what Clips you add/remove from that area of the Track. Unlike the Clip Keyframes, these will NOT follow the Clip.

One can toggle the Keyframe of an Audio Track between Clip, or Track. Also, the default frequency of Audio Track Keyframes in PrE & PrPro is a bit high, in my opinion. I drop these down a bit in Edit>Preferences.

For the Keyframing, one can alter the Velocity of the Keyframes to Bezier from Linear, and the adjustments will be a bit smoother. Besides the Bezier, one can use Ease-Out and Ease-In, which are Bezier, but basically in a Preset. In PrPro, one has several different Bezier options. In PrE, one is a bit more limited.

For setting the Volume, I recommend that one only glance at the Levels Meters (unless they are peaking in the red), and instead use a pair of high-quality headphones (noise canceling models are worth the money), or fully calibrated studio monitors. Let your ears make the decisions for you, as the dB settings should only be a starting point.

In PrPro, one can also Rt-click on the Audio Clip, and choose Edit in Audition (if you have it installed), or Edit n Soundbooth (if you have one of the suites).

Here is a look at Audio Keyframes in PrPro 2.0. Things are similar in PrPro later versions, and also in PrE, with the above noted differences:
