Have you tried manually adding the words to your user dictionary?
c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\##\user.dct

Actual path may vary with release level, and certainly with OS platform.

Even easier might be to just type a DH (hex code \x04) into the Marker Text string in the Marker dialog.

One thing that doesn't seem to work is typing DHs into the word when asking spell checker to Learn it. Even for words it's never seen before, FM has its own idea where to hyphenate them, and ignores the \x04; this suggests plan A above.

The Adobe web site, victim once again to gratuitous eternal re-design churn, is a triumph of style over substance, and is probably resulting in utterly needless lost revenue. You say "Shut up and take my money". They say "Sorry, we're into stealth merchandizing. Guess again. If you can figure that we offer it, and figure out how to order it, we might sell it to you, or not."

Their "All Products" catalog page, for example, is sprawled across 7 HTML pages, where a single multi-column page of simple names used to suffice.

Internet Explorer does not jump at CSH marker in HTML5

Hi,

I have TCS5 (FM12 and RH11), but am now trying FM12's publish feature. So far, Chrome and Firefox work well. In other words: I click on an item in our application software and the browser opens and jumps at the proper location (where the CSH marker is). But IE11 only opens up the proper file. So what the user see is the beginning of the HTML file and has to search for what he/she wants in the file, which defeats the purpose of CSH marker.

It seems that the tag-attribute pair used by RH when generating HTML5 is <a name="CSH_1">. According to w3school (HTML a tag), the "name" attribute is not supported in HTML5 (they say to use the global id attribute instead). So, I guess that IE simply does not support the name attribute. Obviously, one wonders why TCS uses an attribute which is not part of the HTML5 standard. But there is no use getting into that. ;-) Therefore, my questions would be, in order:

- Is there a way for IE to work properly with the name attribute?

- Is there a way to get FM or RH to export HTML5 using the global attribute?

- Is there an existing way (script?) to replace the name attribute by the global id attribute? If I do it myself, will the mapping mechanism still work?

Hi again,

I have reverted back to 12.0.2 and used the script (mentioned in the previous post) to externalize all images. After running the script, I had no problem accessing the "Style Mapping" tab. I also could publish to HTML5 twice. This doesn't mean that it will work everytime from now on, but my guess is that it probably will. Oh, and the publishing process is slightly faster (20 min instead of 28).

Still, although I do have some embedded images in my FM files, the largest FM file is only 42 Mb. I don't see why this would cause FM or RH to cause so much trouble. If anyone can help, I would love to have an explanation, a fix or even a work around.

Note that I posted my question regarding the script to the FrameMaker Scripting forum. I still need the script to publish in HTML5! So, this means that I cannot update to 10.0.3, which has many HTML5 improvements.

Is the Body Flow A all one continuous object?

If so, I'd look at two approaches:

Create a new empty document, and copy all the old Flow A into it.
Create a new empty document, and import the Page Layouts back into the old one.

I'm wondering if you have some page layout overrides present, perhaps with some disconnected frames.

I am trying to set double sided pagination options in an old FM file, and whatever choice I make, when pressing "Set", this error shows.

I have cleaned weird frames in master page. I have search for this message but haven´t been able to find anything regarding this issue.

What I'm trying to do is split this old document into chapters so it can be easily edited, I need to configure the pages to count even. Am I missing something?

Thanks for the input! [btw, the forum seems to be asserting I'm only replying to Error1703. Not so: all contributions read and acknowledged]

As for the platform, I can confidently say Windows 7 … and, even, Intel Core 2 V Pro; both these are flashed on colourful stickers :-} don't know about the bit-count, though I note that the Start menu offers both IE and IE 64-bit.

As for reinstall to a VM, it sounds convincing, but whether I'll be able to negotiate it with tech support is uncertain.

"CS first, then FM with no PDF" is the advice I'll give. Fingers crossed that since I'm the lone user, tech support will send round a Real Human rather than waste time trying to write an install script :-}

Framemaker 8. Landscape Chapters adding blank page every other page.

Hi,

I am currently using FrameMaker 8 to create my book. I have multiple chapters, both Landscape and Portrait. I use Framescript > Scripts > Insert Reports to insert PDF documents into my chapters. I have an excel spreadsheet that has two columns code/pdf file name that the Framscript uses to insert the report. I insert a code into the chapter, and from that code it references the matching PDF file to insert.

I have been running this without any issues until now, because now in the Landscape chapters it is adding a blank page between all my pages. So every other page is blank. For example if the PDF file had 2 pages now I have 2 pages and 2 blank pages. On the blank page I do have a symbol (RS Report Spacer) that appears. I could delete it and the blank page goes away. But this can be troublesome since I have hundreds of pages and every time I run my book the blank pages will reappear.

I have tried Pagination to delete blank pages but to no avail. It does not delete the blank page. The weird part is that for my Portrait chapters this problem does not occur. I am writing this with a small glimmer of hope somebody can help me.

Error message "Failed importing documents" when publishing book to responsive HTML5

Hi,

I have FM12, version 12.0.3. This is a relatively big book (500 pages, conditional text, around 800 images). I have plenty of hard disk space and memory. All files are opened. Still, 9 times out of 10 (approximately) I have a "failed importing documents" message after a third of the book was processed (not always happening on exactly the same file). Note that the conversion is terribly slow (28 min; around twice as long as when using TCS and Robohelp 11).

My guess is that the guilty ones are the images because they are unfortunately embedded (legacy reasons). With TCS5, Robohelp would crash for the same reason. I had found a script to externalize the graphics (ExtendScript of the week: Externalizing Graphics « TechComm Central by Adobe); but somehow, this script is not working since I updated from 12.0.2 to 12.0.3. This means I cannot test my hypothesis. Although I wrote a few simple scripts, this one is quite complex and would be difficult to debug. Unless anyone here knows what could have changed to make the script useless after such a small update?

I mention the following just in case it's related and may help you: In the publish pod, when I open the Edit window of the Responsive HTML5, and click on style mapping, after a few minutes this message displays :

*Filename* could not be processed

In which of course Filename is one of the files in the book. Again, I don't know why this error happens.

Any idea about these problems?

What version of Windows (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1) ?

32 or 64-bit?

What CPU (and if spIntel, does it have hardware virtualization, or is that fused off just because you didn't pay enough)?

Although FM10 might work with the PDF code coming in with CS and/or TCS, it might be safer to re-install 10 in a VM (Virtual Machine, such as "XP Mode" on Win7 Pro/Ent/Ult, but not Basic/Home/Prem).

In any case, for a native install of FM12 or the latest TCS, and CS, I'd be tempted to install CS first, then tell the FM or TCS installer to NOT install the PDF components (otherwise the Deminimus Distiller in FM/TCS will trash the real one in CS' Acrobat Pro).

If you’re talking about TCS5, it’s fine to have prior versions of TCS installed too – the only exception is Acrobat – it doesn’t play nice with multiple versions of itself. I would uninstall it first before installing TCS5.

My manager, who has been pushing (not to say kicking and shoving) on my behalf for some months, has come to my desk and told me that our request for FM12 and whatever-the-latest-CS is has been approved. In fact, even, acted on; so tech support are now ready to install. afaik, I'm due to receive FM12, Acrobat Pro, PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign and Bridge …

Before I let tech support loose, what helpful advice do I need to give them: I seem to remember it's important to install FM before Acrobat, and/or make sure FM does not sneakily install PDF Creator … any other gotchas to be aware of? Also, is it feasible to leave FM10 on the PC for a while so I can get used to FM12 and not find I've hit a problem that stops me working?

I actually found a least one culprit in the trouble with crashing FrameMaker. Imported *png images with 24 bit colorspace! We had some documents with a lot of images in *.png format with 24 colorspace. When we either converted the images to *.jpg or reduced the colorspace to 8 bit, FrameMaker stopped crashing. Strange but true!

It seems to work in LibreOffice Writer, but in MS WordPad it has defective font metrics, and the very name of the font is blank in the font menu.

In Win7 Character Map, the characters illegally occupying the C0 Controls range aren't shown at all. Some of the C1s are shown, but most are blank.

FM's "?" behavior, by the way, is what in other apps is a square box. You can find lots of discussion about FontAwesome and square boxes.

Have your team test this typeface in a variety of apps, operating systems and browsers. Be sure to have them try some of the icons in the Unicode C0 and C1 Controls areas.

Entirely apart from what appear to be at least two other problems with this font, putting glyphs in C0/C1 is a big mistake in my view, and one that may prove difficult to undo (as in: moving those glyphs elsewhere in a later release), if people are adopting and deploying this font where it seems to work.

This is not FontAwesome. It's FontFail.

Well, if it's any consolation, it does the ????? thing (complete with bad font metrics for the question marks) in FM9, too.

I'm tempted to blame the font, but it could also be that FM is confused by things that shouldn't be where they are. You'll notice that some of the glyphs aren't given descriptive names in Character Palette.

For example, code points U+0000 through U+001F. Those are supposed to be the C0 Controls in Unicode, and not displayable glyphs.

Ditto for U+0080 through U+009F, which are the C1 Controls:

The glyphs at these code points should either be in standard Unicode positions (where the glyph is covered by Unicode, such as that left pointing triangle at U+0011, which might have been the same thing as defined by Unicode at U+25C0 or 23F4) or in some Private Use area.

Ask for your money back .

Thank you for the replies. My problem was the layouts in Chapters 8 and 9 overrode the master pages. Once I removed the overrides, I was able to correctly format the pages. That numbering is now fixed.

I have also discovered, as you mentioned, that an autonumbered list is interfering with the Table footnote autonumbering. Now trying to fix that.

I need to update our fonts/templates to Font Awesome. I downloaded and installed the font in the Windows/Fonts folder.

The font appears as question marks (????) in place of the text in FrameMaker 12.

The font appears correctly in other applications, such as Microsoft Word and Outlook.

I tried this with both FontAwesome.otf and fontawesome-webfont.ttf.

Do I need to do something else to get this font to work in FM?

I am having chapter numbering issues.I am using FM 11. I have h1u set as A:Unit <$chapnum>. with Autonumber format checked. I have tried numbering each individual unit and selecting Update Book. However, the numbers are all reset to blanks. I have tried setting the numbering from the book and the same results. Blanks! How do I fix this?

Is it possible to setup a paragraph type as not showing up as a possible cross-reference marker. To have a consisting formatting through out a document I have created a number of paragraph formats. However I do not need these to be able to be select as a cross reference. As it is now, they all show up as a possible cross-reference target and my list of Paragraph Tags in the Cross Reference window is pages long.

Preventing resetting of custom table footnotes

In FM 11, I have a problem with table footnotes. The default custom settings for footnote markers are *, then dagger, then double dagger. For various reasons, I cannot use * in the journal I am editing, so I reset the footnotes so that * is not there and dagger is the first option. Many times, however, when I later reopen the file, FM has automatically reset the markers so that * reappears as the first marker. How do I prevent this?

Save the files as MIF and grep for "F:".

I just did that for a new book based on an old book, and lo, it has an override format that resets F: to 1, that's a default para format for a Table format. Create one of those tables, get an empty para that resets F:, in our case possibly flowed out out sight at the bottom of an anchored frame. Yep; hard to find.

I haven't checked lately, but I seem to recall that paras used on Reference pages might also be able to mess with counters.

I've done that many times. Pages i-v are the front matter (2 pages) and the TOC (3 pages). Then all numbering starts at 1 with Chapter 1. After Chapter 1 all book component files and each individual file are set to continue numbering, i.e. all chapters, pages, paragraphs and footnotes, from the previous chapter.

With all of the book files open, I used the book pane to set the numbering in each component file (went to each tab including footnote and set the numbering to continue numbering from the previous file for all chapters following chapter 1). For each individual file, I did the same thing within the window of the open file. Then I update the book.

Possibly another autonumbered format is resetting counter F, but all of the files use the same formatting. It's also odd that Chapter 8 starts figure renumbering from 1 and Chapter 9 starts figure numbering at 47.

Ready to jump off deep end.

Check Document Numbering properties for the resetting component file, both in the file itself, and in the Book. Chances are one or both are set to restart para numbering.

Another possibility is that some other autonumbered format is resetting counter F.

Using FM 11. I have a nine-chapter book. The first figure is in Chapter 2; that chapter has only 1 figure. I am using the paragraph tag F:Figure\ <n+>. The figure labels are in text boxes inside the anchored frame with the graphic, but not grouped with the graphic. All the figures are auto-numbering correctly with the following exceptions:

Chapter 3, restarts numbering. First figure should be 2, but it restarts with Figure 1. An easy work around: I entered n=2 on the first figure in the chapter. That corrects all of the figure numbering through Chapter 7 which ends with Figure 55.

Chapter 8 restarts with Figure 1. It should be Figure 55. Chapter 8 has 26 figures.

Chapter 9 is totally off: starts with Figure 47. The 3 figures in the chapter are numbered 47, 48 and 49.

I have checked and double checked the formatting and have one chapter that I use as the "master" chapter – 6 because it has both tables and figures. I have imported the formats from the master chapter (6) to all other chapters. The chapter, pages and tables number correctly through the entire book. The first table is in Chapter 1, the last in Chapter 9.

Where should I look to see what is different in Chapters 8 and 9 and possibly 1? If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Decide which component file is the defining instance for the Variables of interest (commonly it's the cover or other 1st file).

Make the changes there.

In the Book menu, have the defining component file open.
Select all other files in Book (they don't have to be open).

File > Import > Formats

Import from Document: [ <set name> ]

[ Deselect All ]

[*] Variable Definitions

[ Import ]

Alternatively, the other component files can Cross-Reference, by paragraph text, to some use of the Vars in the defining file. No batch import required. Just Update Book.

And if there were only 2 ways to do it, it wouldn't be Frame ... store the text strings in text files name.txt and version.txt. Import them everywhere as Text Insets.

I want to place a variable called "version" and a variable called "name" of a product on the title page (first page in the book) . If what's needed is to redefine the default glyph generated by the FM markup "\b", I'm not aware of any way to do that.

But it's simple to edit Paragraph Formats for any bulleted forms, and specify what glyph to use. On FM8 or higher, I would avoid using the old codepage font method, and instead use Unicode. Either choose a body font that populates the codepoint for the glyph you want, or invoke one that does, just for the bullet (Arial Unicode MS if necessary).

In Format > Paragraph > Designer for the bulleted form, it's the Numbering tab. The most obvious markup would be:

\u25e6\t

Which is the Unicode WHITE BULLET and a tab.

Other candidate glyphs might include:

\u25cb

\u25ef

\u274d

\u29bf

\u2299

\u229a

\u233e

\u2a00

\uffee

or even a non-breaking space and combining circle:

\ \u20dd

(update: looks like FM9 doesn't know how to do combining circle - they end up as separate space and circle characters).

If your preferred body font doesn't populate the desired bullet code point, create a Character Format, named perhaps "Bullets", that is As-Is or blank for everything except Font Family, which would select a typeface that does populate the codepoints of interest. Then select that Character Format in the Paragraph Designer menu for your bulleted para formats.

As Jeff mentions, it's solely dependent upon what font you are using. You will have to use the unicode value for the hollow bullet glyph (called a "white bullet" at \u9702). Most TrueType WGL4 fonts have this symbol encoded.

Hello everyone,

We are using FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 (64 bit) platform.

I have found discussions on the Web about this, but so far nothing works for us. As you know, other word processing tools have a hollow bullet as a standard feature. After spending a couple of hours over the past few months researching forums, it appears there is no way to get a true hollow bullet in FrameMaker. Is that correct?

This is what does *not* work for us:

A Courier or Courier New lower case letter "o" (oh). If we could raise it up off the line, it would work. There appears to be no way to lift a character a few pixels off the line.

The symbol you get by pressing Alt+9: ○. When this symbol appears in FrameMaker, it is also needs to be raised up off the line so it doesn't look like the letter "o."

The circular symbol you get when you type a lower case "m" and change the font to Windings 1, because it has shading on the lower right, and also would need to be raised up off the line.

We know how to make any Winding or Webding a bullet. What we want is the standard hollow bullet. Can anyone explain how to do that?

Just installed FrameMaker 9. Can't Save as PDF. Symptom is "Turn OFF Rely on system fonts only. It is off but I still get this error.

Oops, sorry – I missed the fact that you’re doing the Publish route directly out of FM – I’m not sure how you configure it. FM12 introduced more controls to be able to tweak the output, but my suspicion is that you may still not have the ability to mess with the resulting ToC. That’s why I’m still in the TCS camp of editing stuff in RH after bringing it in from FM.

Jeff- Yes, just the TOC. But what do you mean to "just edit it". What would be the tool? Skin editor? (Ideally, I'd like to not have an extra editing step every time I do FM to WebHelp.)
