Personally I think it is somewhat silly for this project to have such a high priority on printing, but alas, atop the food chain I do not sit LOL. I suppose I understand Adobe's lack of attention to printing in this case, though I do wish they would at least allow RH users to opt-out of the option altogether (maybe there is a feature request here after all?). I'm still interested in somehow "vanishing" the print menu option and then perhaps adding a topic full of exported PDFs which the user could open individually and print if need be... if I find success I will report back, but I am not all that optimistic at this point. At any rate, thank you gentlemen for your time and input!

p.s. I am looking for a way to either: remove the 'Print' menu option in an AirHelp app... or if that is not possible, some way to point that menus options to print PDF or perhaps .doc versions of my content (as the quality of printing from AirHelp is atrocious at best)? Essentially I seek any way to improve upon my customers' experience when and if they migrate to that pesky print button. Unfortunately however, I have yet to find anything. Is there a way to do one or both of these tasks, or if not... perhaps there is another way to improve the quality of printing from AirHelp (or remove the option entirely)? Any advice would be most appreciated, thank you!

The people who use Rh, the people on this forum, have no idea how Adobe have made Rh do that. You are in the situation where a programming language, let's say VB has been used to produce two apps, App A and App B. You have a problem with App A and you are asking in a forum for App B.

See www.grainge.org for RoboHelp and Authoring tips

@petergrainge

In retrospect, I probably should refrase the question as such. " What is the best method or procedure for downloading PDF files via Adobe AIR when operating with a iMac running Maverick 10.9.0? " As it is it seems as though this request is discouraged by Adobe Air. Although I have succeeded to download a PDF file using Adobe AIR, I don't recall how I did so due to so much frustration during the process. Any valuable feed back would be appreciated. It seems like something is happening with the tri-frame window when viewing from the web (vs. locally) the topic content is overlapping the TOC. It's so odd. At least with the AIR help I can actually see the Content drop-down menu and make a selection. While the Content drop-down menu is expanded, the frames somewhat correct themselves but they're still not right - I'm assuming because there is no topic content displayed while the drop-down menu is expanded. I'm perplexed.

Let me provide a little more information:

Originally I was generating Web Help but I was experiencing the same issues with the Web Help when I put it up on the site. When I linked to Index. htm, the window was skewed and the Contents were not displayed on the left-hand side. Then I tried linking to one of the topic html files - that solved the window display problem, but then the Content drop-down menu was not displayed. This project has a few different content categories that can be selected in the content drop-down menu. It works locally but once I get it up on the server and link to it from my site, it's wonky.

The output looks great when I open it from the local SSL directory; however, once I transfer the files (via FTP) to the server on which my website is hosted, the browser-based help looks VERY bad. I'm not quite sure what's going on. It could be something very simple that I'm overlooking. I created my website using Adobe Muse and it's hosted through Adobe Business Catalyst so I'm not sure why my Help files aren't displayed properly. When the user initially downloads the help to their desktop and when the help is opened each time thereafter, does RoboHelp point to the server (location of help files) each time the user opens the help from their desktop, or are the help files downloaded to the user's desktop? (The latter doesn't seem right if I can auto-update the help contents for locally-installed help.) And if there's an update to the help file, the user is notified of the update, correct? I've worked with RoboHelp (mainly WebHelp) for several years and love the look/feel of AirHelp and its capabilities.

Jeff will not be online yet. The AIR file is a single file but not the same as a CHM. A CHM is what the user opens. An AIR file is a bit like a zip file and it installs the AIR help on the user's PC as a program. Within Program Files, it looks much like WebHelp.

You will need a freely available licence from Adobe if you are also going to install the AIR runtime that will be needed. See the AIR topics on my site.

With that said, I don't think AIR of any type is your solution any more than a CHM is. The latter is designed to be run from the user's PC and not a server. See http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/chm_mspatch/896358.htm

Quite simply, short of a PDF help file, there isn't a single file help option designed to run from web servers. What seems odd here and where more information is needed is why your developer cannot upload webhelp. Something is not ringing right here.

See www.grainge.org for RoboHelp and Authoring tips

@petergrainge

But I doubt that using that flavour is going to work for your developer. You probably want to invest in some sort of installation program (you may already own a copy of one of them anyway) that will package up all the resulting files into a one-file installer. Then the developer can invoke this silently to unpack and deploy your help content on the client’s server.

For example, Adobe Air in RH8 has the following Output Types:

Adobe Air Application,

Browser based help,

Air Application AND Browser based help, and

Help Content.

My ultimate goal is simply to have a compact output file (e.g., like a CHM file) so my developer can incorporate into his workflow solution (SharePoint 2010) to automatically deploy my web help to not just the central admin server but also all sub-servers. The initial approach of incorporating the help files (currently using RH WebHelp) into the install package did not address that scenario. Unfortunately, for him, he cannot dynamically include all the files into the solution; they must be included one-by-one, which is pain and will cause issues if new files are added later on. Hence, my inquiry to find another web help platform output to reduce the number of files needed to be included in the solution.

In closing, what do you recommend out of Adobe Air web help solution?

Thank you all for your time and consideration,

~PM

Here is the current status of this problem. I am going into detail in case this helps anyone else in a similar situation.

Five years ago, I created my first AIR help file and I used a self-signed certificate without a timestamp. Had I read Peter Grainge's info, I would have used a timestamp, but Adobe's help says "Select to include a timestamp on the digital certificate. The timestamp provides information on how long the certificate is valid." Since I thought the certificate would always be valid, I didn't know this was important.

Fast forward five years. I've created many, many .air help files in many languages, all using the same certificate that I originally created. Thousands of customers have these help files installed, and their certificates have all expired. No one can install or reinstall these help files now.

Our installer engineer worked hard to find a way to extend the certificates. However, it appears that even though I have the latest version of AIR (4.0) on my system, RoboHelp *may* be using AIR 1.5 to create the .air files, even in RH 11 (this is not confirmed by Adobe but in the output, the HelpViewer-app.xml file indicates that this is true). This is important, because apparently AIR certificates after AIR 1.5.3 have a grace period which allows them to be extended. Certificates from AIR earlier than that cannot be extended.

I can create new output with a new certificate and a timestamp (I have archives of all my help projects). But, the new certificate and timestamp causes AIR to treat the updated help as if it were new help. It won't install automatically over the old help, and our context-sensitive help is broken. Our engineer tried hard to find a way to prevent the updated help with the new certificate to be treated as a new help, but he says that for older versions of AIR (like 1.5), the "publisher ID" is not separate from the certificate. A new publisher ID is required with a new certificate.

This is a bad situation, to say the least.

Vikas has tried to help but what we were able to determine is that my context-sensitive help is functioning properly. I know this anyway, because when the engineer updates the publisher ID for our software to connect to the updated help, all works as expected. But we are not going to re-issue previous versions of our software so that the context-sensitive help functions correctly. All customers with older help who need to reinstall it for any reason, will no longer have context-sensitive help.

I am still hoping to learn something from an Adobe engineer that will help us be able to re-issue our help and have it not be viewed as a different help installation, or extend our certificates. Vikas does not have this information, though I appreciate that he tried to assist us.

In my research on this, I also found one person who used a certified, signed, certificate and had it expire after five years. And someone else who used a timestamp but still had the help expire. On the AIR support site, it definitely states that self-signed certificates expire after five years - now I know this. But not a word about this in RoboHelp help.

In hindsight, I am sorry that I created my help files with AIR.

Alexandra

(I haven't heard back from Vikas yet.) At the moment, our installer engineer is investigating an "AIR Development Tool" that might extend the certificate dates indefinitely.

The help was treated as new when I updated the certificate because the engineer told me to create a new one and select the timestamp checkbox. But now we may not be going that route. For years, I had been using the same self-signed certificate, copying it up to the next project, not really thinking about it. That's why all our projects were affected at the same time.

More later. This effectively kills all AIR help we have made over the last 5 years, and we've made lots of different versions in lots of different languages. We had no idea there was any kind of built-in expiration. Even if we create updated versions with new certificates, our context-sensitive help is broken because Adobe treats it like a new program. If there had been some information about this on the AIR properties dialog box, that sure would have been nice. This was a big slap out of nowhere.

Thanks again for your "help" and I hope this thread helps someone else.

Alexandra
