Porting existing Android native app to Adobe AIR

I indent to port a existing Android native app to Adobe AIR for android. Reasons: To use my existing AS3 skills, "cost" for native is too high and soon port it to iOS.

Difficulties I face here:

Existing app package, say "com.mygame.myapp" has to be retained. By using FB with AIR SDK, we get a "air." prefix to the package name. It becomes "air.com.mygame.myapp".
Will this solution still solve the problem in AIR SDK removing "air." prefix from package name has any working solution!?.
The help link http://helpx.adobe.com/air/kb/opt-out-air-application-analytics.html is dead now. iOS specific is found here Opt-out | Adobe AIR app analytics | iOS
Please suggest me a Mac suitable solution.

In Android, using a ".keystore" file, we need to export as the ".APK" file. In AIR, if we publish using a new ".p12" signature file would it be compatible with Google Play, and it rules.

App's existing users should find difficulty in upgrading the app.

Another unanswered thread Possible to remove "air." appended on package and target a .keystore rather than .p12?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Playing a video in AIR on a mobile device

I haven't seen a walkthrough, but these are the basic details:

You can play FLV with MP3 audio in the way you always did, if you used netstream that is. The FLVPlayback component won't work for iOS, because it has external code that Apple wouldn't allow. The video would be playing back just using the CPU, but at least you could use any rendermode. The performance wouldn't be ideal if you're doing full screen video.

You can play video that uses H.264/AAC in a StageWebView. It would be hardware decoded, and you could go full screen and other native like things. But, there are issues, especially on Android, where the video may even be upside down on some devices, or maybe the audio won't stop playing after you close the video.

Then there is StageVideo. It works almost identically to the old netstream way of working, except that it plays H.264/AAC with hardware decoding. Unlike Stage3D you can use either GPU or Direct rendermode, and there are many other advantages to using GPU over Direct. If you are using Stage3D (even via Starling), you will have to use Direct rendermode.

Since a recent version of AIR 15 StageVideo has also supported automatic software decoding as a fallback.

So, recent StageVideo is a good option, and certainly works on iOS and Android.

But, it makes it a nightmare for us Air developers.

I'm an electronics engineering graduate so I acutely understand both the hardware and software complications/implications of this situation but I'm wondering what we're going to do about.

A version of Adobe Air that would run on legacy ARM v6 would be great because a lot of cheap hardware still uses that form factor. Raspberry Pi for instance uses that CPU form and therefore being able to target that device with Adobe Air in the education market would be a HUGE opportunity! Also, the 'internet of things' could be a huge market for Air developers who could adopt such hardware as the Raspberry Pi. I do though, as I hint above, appreciate the development and resource costs for supporting that older CPU core though.

So, I wanted to throw this out there to see what other people think - both developers and Adobe themselves...

Is there a solution out there? Or can we, as a community, create a solution?

After the crash, the camera becomes unusable by any app on the device. The device must be reset in order to restore the camera. After many tests, I know that the app crashes when the "video.attachCamera" method is called.

This is the relevant piece of code:

this.cameraPos = CameraPosition.FRONT;

this.camera = this.getCamera(this.cameraPos);

this.camera.setMode(640, 640, 30);

this.video = new Video(640, 640);

this.video.attachCamera(this.camera); // crash!

private function getCamera(position:String):Camera

{

  for(var i:int=0; i<Camera.names.length; i++)

  {

    var c:Camera = Camera.getCamera(String(i));

    if(c.position == position) return c;

  }

  return Camera.getCamera();

}

The same code works fine in other Android devices. Listing all available cameras show that both (back and front) cameras are available in the S3. And the front camera works fine when I use CameraUI.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

How to partially copy a SQLITE database/table

For that I have to copy some table data/rows from the database as SQL queries.

Requirement is a user can later import the stored things into the application, during which the copied table/data should be inserted into the new database.

I think retrieving each record individually and making insert query from the values and saving in a text file and then later at the time of importing executing those insert queries one by one

is a really expensive and time taking job. (As I have thousands of records)

Please suggest me an efficient method to do this.

Regards,

Jameel

Re: File Load is not working on Mac but Windows

I just tried a simple File load test and the type property always traces out null. According to the ASDocs, the type property: "On the Macintosh, this property is the four-character file type, which is only used in Mac OS versions prior to Mac OS X. If the FileReference object was not populated, a call to get the value of this property returns null.".

Further reading into the FileReference docs, all properties are supposed to be populated once the complete event fires and that is when I ran a trace of the File.type.

Since the is an AIR app, you might want to consider using the extension property instead to know the file extension to run a switch case against. The ASDocs also say that in reference to Mac's: "You should consider the creator and type properties to be considered deprecated. They apply to older versions of Mac OS.".

If you choose to use the extension property instead, you don't have to include the "." in your switch statement. The ASDocs do say that "If there is no dot in the filename, the extension is null." So, you may want to run some tests on Windows to make sure that "extension" works. On Mac OS, pretty much every user friendly file (image, movie, document, etc) has a file extension so you shouldn't have any concern of extension returning null on Mac OS.

You probably got the TypeError on Mac OS because you were trying to run a String method on a null object at the start of the switch statement.

FileReference.extension
