With the Creative Cloud hosting yes you can bring your own domain name over. No issue there.

The CC hosting does not have email associated with it. You can use an external email provider OR upgrade to the next level plan that does include email.

Read up on BC before you move your site over is your best bet.

Are you talking about Business Catalyst hosting? That is closer to a CRM and you may not be able to bring your site as is over to BC for hosting. So you may want to read up on that:

As for the email address, that would depend. If you are using a 3rd party mail provider then your MX record would remain the same and email would not be affected. If the emails are hosted with another provider (i.e.: your current web host), then you would need to migrate the mailboxes over and setup the addresses on the new account. The BC team would be best suited to help answer and outline that sort of process for you.

Pre-Purchase Domain Hosting Question

I've been considering upgrading my CS6 to CC.
One thing I am wondering about is should I change my web hosting too, since that seems to come with Adobe CC. I need to decide in the next 2 weeks, since this is when I'm due for renual on my domain name and hosting.

My questions are hopefully simple:

Does Adobe allow me to bring over my already-owned domain name (it's just my surname) and, does Adobe take care of all the emails addresses associated with that domain name?

In other words, I have, "Video@domainname.com" "mjr@domainname," "info@domainname," and about 3 others. Do I still need a domain hosting service for this?

Yes it should be fine. I suggest setting up your client websites on the US datacentre too keep them in a similar timezone.

Hi Martin.

Yes this is no problem but first you need to understand the hierarchy governing DNS management.

At its most basic level, the chain of command looks like this.

1. Domain Name Registrar

yourdomainsname.com

2. Authoritative Name Servers

3. DNS Zone File:

A records.
MX records.
CName Records
TXT records.

To clarify...

1. The Registrar where you registered your domain provides you access to a management panel.

2. From the domain management level you can specify the "Authoritative Name Servers". Your registrar will have probably assigned its own name-servers by default but you can "delegate" these to any other service if you wish to. The records will look something like this:

NS1.yourhostregistry.com
NS2.yourhostregistry.com

As the name suggests, "Authoritative" Name Servers are in charge of your DNS management and everything your domain name does will ultimately begin with the rules you have specified on the Name Servers. e.g. If you want to send web traffic to another server that hosts your website, or send email traffic to a different server that hosts your email, or, send blog visitors to a different server that hosts your blog, then these "records" need to be created on the Authoritative Name Servers. This is called a DNS Zone File.

3. The zone file will contain various records for various purposes. The primary record types to be aware of are: A, MX, CName, and TXT.

"A" records are used to point web traffic to the web server hosting your website plus other hosted services. "A" records are specified using the IP address of the server. e.g. your root domain might specify A = 54.236.189.64. You may also have other A records for sub-domains e.g. "www".yourdomain.com could point to the same host sever as your root domain or somewhere else completely. You might also have "blog".yourdomain.com pointing to a different server where you host your blog.

"MX" records are used to direct email traffic to the email servers you use. MX records are specified using the fully qualified domain of the email host e.g. mx.mailhost.com. Or it may be mail.yourdomain.com with a corresponding A record for "mail." pointing to the IP address of the mail server.

"CName" records are used to create alias subdomains. e.g. You could specify "www" as an alias that resolve to your root domain.

"TXT" records are used to assign additional rules such as SPF (Send Policy Framework) to authorize how your domain may be used for sending email to help prevent it being used as a spam identity.

That's the basic architecture. One thing to note: If your name servers also host your website and email then the additional records will exist by default.

e.g. If you want to use BC for both your site and email then at the domain registry you would simple set your name servers to be:

ns1.businesscatalyst.com
ns2.businesscatalyst.com

The rest would happen automatically.

Now to deal with your query.

You want to use BC for your website and your previous host for your email (I will assume your previous host is also where your domain is registered). To achieve this you have 2 choices.

1. Delegate the name servers to BC and create a MX record in your DNS file on BC to specify your email host. (more info here)

2. Leave the name servers defaulting to the registry and create a DNS A record to point to BC for your website. (more info here)

Either option will resolve your issue.

Hi,

The option is up to you as you can continue editing the site in Muse after publishing into BC which will require you to republish to update.

If you want to continue editing in BC they you can do some within the site's admin panel. Please note Muse and BC do not have editing relationship so you'll need to need to enable the editing option in BC if wanting to work on BC side.

Enable editing options (Muse users)

If you created a site from Muse, the options to edit pages in Business Catalyst are disabled. The editing options are disabled because there’s no round-tripping workflow between Muse and Business Catalyst. If you modify the page in Business Catalyst, your changes will be overwritten the next time you update the page in Muse and upload it to Business Catalyst.

If you need to make edits to a page, work on the page in Muse and upload the page to Business Catalyst again.

You can enable the editing options in Business Catalyst as follows:

Select My Details from the toolbar menu with your name.
Select the Enable Online Content Editing option.

If you believe your details that your entering are 100% and you do not get a form to renew payment or update a credit card... Then you need to speak with the people who set up the BC site for you.. The people who you pay the licence fee towards.

If you pay directly to Adobe and you feel your payments are up to date, then it is likely a password issue and it may be worth double checking and then clicking "forgot password"

I bought a domain name from Fasthost and set up a website and email account. Since subscribing to Creative cloud I thought it would make sense to host my website in BC as it was free. I cancelled my hosting with fasthost but kept my email there. The email has stopped working and i have been told i need to get BC to redirect the mx records to fasthost ip address, does this make sense to anyone? Am I being stupid? whats the best course of action?

Liam I read the blog and am aware of the BC Next. It will bring new way of manipulating all the resources which is great, however it still won't bring whatever doesn't exist there yet.

Yeah maybe 10 years later everything will be there I guess. I hope it's not gonna be the V3 case, fingers crossed.

System Emails | Conditional display of tags

Hi, I am currently looking at modifying a system email (invoice) to include the discount amount where this is applicable.
I want to hide the entire table row if no discount is applied to avoid showing discount $0.00 on the majority of system emails.
A conditional statement would allow this, however, from what i have read to date this doesn't seem possible.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

We host webmail for a client using Business Catalyst. He's been telling me when he receives mail in his Inbox... after 1 day the mail is deleted or gone.

Is there a setting to turn this off? or is this caused by the client?

While I agree that I would love to see BC add custom SSL functionality I must agree I would rather see other improvements first.

But thanks for the comments Mario. Its hard when I am agreeing with people that - It would be nice, but the excuses for BC to jump on it ASAP and its killing business... etc are just not valid reasons and BC wont do as Mario and I have pointed out, all that work and drop everything to do this. People need to be realistic.

It's been over 2 years now

I think that because of the way BC's multi-tenancy is built it may be a

huge task to introduce SSL certificates. I think that most partners would

like to see other improvements to BC done first before their engineering

team commits 6 months to implementing SSL certificate framework. Most of

the net is still http so I don't think Google will be too quick to punish

sites for not having SSL certs. I think BC still has couple of year to go

before they have to invest time in this.

That's my 2 cents.

I think the short question is, will BC enable sites to use a SSL certificate with their own domain name to, amongst other reasons, align with the new Google search criteria?

I can get a number of statements from banks this week if I sent out and found time to do so that would go against that. That is not true. If that was true the way you pay on the web would be very very different. This is not the case. 1 or 2 cases does not equal all.

Changing http to https in page links (href sources) does not seem a big issue, but true if you source something (like an iFrame) from some other site that is not https would be a problem (as it would compromise the https status, some items would show as insecure to viewers). Can't say I encounter that anymore as mostly we are just sourcing links with HTTPS as standard, like fonts and scripts.

Google say ... that while only 10% of the crawled and discovered URLs on the web are HTTPS URLs, that 30% of the first page search results contain at least one or more HTTPS URLs. So if you are looking at all the queries done on Google, 30% of the first page of the Google search results for each of those queries have at least one HTTPS URL listed in the results.

That still seems a small result, and in line with the 'ranking signal' being very low right now. Some of those HTTPS URL listed in results would be there because of other factors (as well) like good SEO and just plain popular.

Nevertheless, I'd like to hear what BC officially think. Then we can get on with things and leave them to sort it out one way or another.

If people changing over scripts, external sources, etc so they don't have issues on their site is the main concern for a change like this I could see a potential solution. This is assuming that BC has already redeveloped the system to handle unique SSL.

One potential way to approach something like that would be to allow any sites that have already been built to continue to use the worldsecuresystems shared SSL. Any new sites could use this or purchase a unique SSL at an additional cost. Older sites could also be upgraded to a unique SSL but only after they are informed of the potential issues by doing so. This is all assuming that Adobe wants to even go this direction in the future. Just my two cents.

They would say the same as myself Simon, so what I have put down I would consider what they would say.

Question is will this become an important search preference? The way google has worded it is no dates and a very clear "maybe in the future". And on the google discussions people have very clearly voiced their issues on it. Very much considering the current SSL and HTTPS is not secure, in fact a lot of recent hacks etc have been through these protocols in fact. In many ways it is a comfort thing, and does not mean you can not encrypt your data. And there has been a push for a better https protocol anyway. There are lots of factors here and just rushing in on this when it is not that important and drop other things like actually fixing up the eCommerce would actually be a very bad idea.

No one is saying wait and see as such Simon, it is more that - It would be good to have the offering but it is something Bc should not just spend the time and money and jump on right away. You do not see the whole web to rush to make this change do you? Because the same decisions and reasons apply.

Even if you do have a certificate, it does not instantly mean you switch everything to https for you site as there a lot of considerations. If people use iframes then there are big changes and limitations. You can not just call external scripts or plugins just like you would etc.

Which leads me to re-iterate that on our end/ client end people not actually properly thinking through all such changes. The way you call scripts, the fact in some cases because such services DO NOT have a https protocol you can call on will mean you CANT use them any more for example. People will very likely go off an moan at BC but its not their issue. I can form a big list of things (only mentioned a handful on this thread) that would impact on how you build a site. You just can not carry on as the norm. Take with BC apps when they forced https on them -There was a number of changes you had to make because it killed them in many aspects.

Again I want to just reiterate BC should not offer this, At some point it would be good and if they sold them and setup a wholesaler for SSL certificates they may make a bit of money from it. But people need to think things through and I think people often do not. I am just trying to be the voice of reason, people need to understand BC and other companies for that matter can not just jump to it.

There are lots of BIG sites on BC as well making massive turn overs and this is NOT an issue with the worldsecuresystems, so trying to through excuses like this are not valid, Again its not as smooth as same domain - true, but its not like "OUR clients are loosing money! IT is because of this". I think even here I have said a few things on why some people wont be doing well with UX etc.

Gosh I've just been reading through all these comments. Lots of good comments. Clearly genuine concern.

What is missing here is any constructive feedback from BC Staff on the Google HTTPS initiative.

The very real and practical problem we face is do we recommend and commit our new commerce clients to BC when they will expect us to enable private SSL certificates when this becomes an important search preference? It's just not practical to say we will 'wait and see', in fact it would irresponsible for us to gamble on something that could end up costing us or our clients a lot of money to move to another CMS and commerce system if BC did nothing or was just too slow out the gate for our clients on this. Very frustrating as BC is so good in most other ways.

Look forward to seeing some official BC input on this discussion concerning Google. The longer the silence is, the more speculation there is that either BC don't have a solution or even a plan in mind.

You need to provide a lot more information and background then that sorry. That is nothing to go on.

If you mean you had a domain and email running and you set up a BC site and the emails stopped working? Then this will be because you pointed all traffic to your BC site including emails. You need to change the domain settings where you have your domain to not be the NS Records (restore those) but just the change the A-Record (web traffic) to point to BC.

I think your comments here are the key for you Stuart.

You do not know what BC has worked on and rolling out.

Liquid in a sense can be called new feature but they re-wrote the rendering engine of the platform.

To be able to do the stuff people want, be able to put things like liquid and the new modules etc announced and make things more flexible they had to do this. They also need to work on the stability of the platform, the code is quite old.

Yep they need to work on the core functionality as well, but the handful of people here vs a lot of people wanting other things... This is lower down the list and you need to accept that.

In terms of your last comments, I get people who say I help them a lot and would not agree with you at all. You take as you take it. That is the key there. I do not agree with your thoughts here on SSL being A MUST! etc so you have a negative opinion of me. That is fine.

And the fact you do not think I am open minded really shows a lot of this, because if you actually looked at all the things I have done in terms of BC, the things I have complained about and more, that could not be further from the truth.

Big changes? So v3 for admin was a big change, the stuff they are doing now for the next version are big changes... So the SSL stuff is doable, IMHO they need to improve what they currently have instead of adding new features. Allowing for private SSL certs. will make life a lot easier for us all.

No doubt you get thanked a lot Liam, however in nearly all the posts I read over the years, I do see you being narky in your responses to people, it doesn't appear to be open minded it appears to be very much the opposite.

I think I am being the most realistic and opened minded here. I have used just about every CMS solution out there.

People who do not get in there way always produce the same sorts of comments.

Firstly, I have said many times here that having a dedicated SSL option is a good idea. People so far are not grasping the big changes not only for BC but for them as well, and the cost.

Bit surprised as well with your comments about me, but also not so much because I am not agreeing with you. I get thanked nearly every day on here. I use lots of my free time helping the community, just finished presenting at Adobe Max showing cool stuff for partners. Pretty has Brass Tacks that teaches people about new stuff coming to BC that I and Brett do.

I am always talking to BC, working with them, pestering them for updates, new things, changes... I test heaps for them, provide heaps of feedback to make BC better for everyone.

Now if BC continue to do the shared https over allowing people use a custom one (seriously, BC could sell the certificates and make a killing if they want to), I believe this will harm more websites than do good. I've always hated the way BC used a shared SSL cert. I'm yet to find anyone that has convinced me that its better than having their own installed etc. I know of client complaints because of the way BC does their shared SSL, as I write this we are involved in yet another issue caused by this.

Liam, have you ever dealt with building outside of the BC ecosystem? Because it seems like your very close minded and in every forum post you have on these forums it seems that it's your answer or nothing when dealing with people (this thread is a classic example of your arrogance towards other BC users).

Also have you ever used CDNs like maxCDN? Yes they have a shared SSL but also give the ability to install private SSLs, if they can do it why can't BC?

I have been using BC for a while but never for e-commerce, I feel it is a bit embarrassing to ask ...

How does the shipping integrations really work?

I can not find any info on what automation the integration provides.

So far I understood how to set up payment gateways and shipping providers.

But what happens when the shop goes live? How does the integration work?

When a customer places an order, will that info be sent directly to the shipping provider?

I found out that I can use the integration to get pricing info, but I don't understand how the daily routine will work.

Also found a video on order management where I learned that I can print shipping labels etc.

So, Is this all a manual thing? Do I have to manually print/email the shipping labels to our warehouse or can it be automated?

What if I have multiple shipping providers, are the lists with labels separated for each shipping provider - country?

Lot's of videos and tutorials but I am sorry to admit that I can not find any info on how the actual shipping process works or what kind of automation I get from the integration.

The setup for our shop is that we sell product to over 33 countries. We use all the shipping providers and have different stock locations in the world.

I hope there is some automation available to minimize manual work.

I know a lot of people asking this but for me i'm still confused.

I made a website to this client. He wants to upload the mp3 files on his site via FTP.

I told him just send the files to via drop box and I'll upload those to Adobe Muse and publish it to Business Catalyst.

He keep insisting me to use to use Filezilla. He wants me to provide the username and password to him. I really don't know what to say.

So basically, I'm designing the web in Adobe Muse and publish it to Business Catalyst. I buy the domain name in Cheap-registrar.com

How should I respond to my client about this? and is there something that I miss about FTP?

I recommend using Google Webmaster Tools to achieve this: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en. Through Webmaster Tools, you can request a re-index of your site amongst other uses.

The above code is only for HTML5 browsers and the file format is restricted to certain browsers as well. I would not recommend just doing that and you would need to have alternate file types and browser fall back methods.

Thanks for your reply I've got my domain name and think I have delegated it correctly.

However when I try to use Google it doesn't show up, is there a way to check if my site is indeed live?

Thanks Liam. I got some further input from Adobe, posted here in case anyone else has the same question:

You can upload a video on BC site, the file limit is 250 MB, So you can upload the video on BC. Once you have uploaded it to BC, you will get a url of the video like, http://mysite.com/video.mp4

Now go to Muse, use HTML Video tag, http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_video.asp
in the video tag code where it says <source src="movie.mp4" type="video/mp4">, replace the source by http://mysite.com/video.mp4 (URL of the video)

The fastest way will be connect to your site using FTP, and upload the file. to see hw to connect to your bc site, take a look to this article

You can chose to upload the file in any folder or in root folder. (Optional)

You can also, upload the file using BC File manager, in Admin panel-> Site manager-> File manager.

You can also put the file in image folder for upload. This will include an additional step. Unless your file is on server, you will not be able to define source in video tag, so You will need to publish site twice, once to upload the file and second after defining the source of the file.

Yep, single files are limited to 250mb as a note.
