Yes, I know...

But I see two kinds of "official" limitations for which you can find workarounds :

- those based on 'tricks' or add-ons to restore some functionality (16 bits layers is a good example).

- those normally included in Elements, especially if they can be considered 'best practice' or even 'good practice' such as using ACR as suggested, or even using LR. For the 16 bits example, I don't think that the staff can really expect Elements users to upgrade to CS at ten times the price, but it would be realistic to expect many users to overcome this limitation by using LR which is now affordable.

And in a user to user forum, it may be a sound advice to stress that a bigger figure : 16 instead of 8 bits is not necessarily better ; just like a 24 Mpix camera is not 3 times better than an 8 Mpix one

CS versus Elements.

Yes, you can with ACR. Open any file in ACR (raw or jpeg, tiff...) with 'Open as ' option in camera raw... and save a copy in 16 bits mode.
I agree this has no practical value if the original file is only 8 bits.

Now, the 'limited' range of 16 bits editing covers everything wich is necessary (global edits to avoid posterization) especially if you are using ACR, which I highly recommend.
