If you want Reader to open the PDF when double-clicking in Windows Explorer, then right click, select open with, and then go to the menu for "always open with" and select Reader. What you are talking about is true of most installations of programs in Windows. Browsers tends to do the same thing if you install multiple browsers. In the case of Acrobat, AA X was the first version that actually allows both Reader and Acrobat, at least from a support viewpoint. For all previous versions it was recommended to install one or the other, not both. I then installed Acrobat using the Creative Cloud.
