18qwer...

Thanks for the answer, it mostly worked.

Microsoft's fixit said it corrected the problem, and it did, but left a ton of registry fragments, Adobe Active File Monitor v9 running, and a "ghost" of Photoshop Elements 9 in uninstall. I believe that anyone else viewing this can quit here and run just fine.

Wanting a cleaner system, I then went through the manual uninstall procedure. It was a bit different than documented, probably because of changes made by fixit. There were still a few fragments which I removed myself.

Elements 11 seems to be working fine. Elements 9 seems to be 99% gone. I'm happy.

Unless experienced with the registry, I would recommend most users with this problem stop after successful execution of fixit.

A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.msi"

I've run out of ideas. I did a chat with a tech a couple of days ago, but he just told me the problem was above his capabilities and the people who knew the answers weren't in... to call back. I haven't yet. I'm hoping someone knows the answer without having to go through that.

When I try starting 9, all I get now is the startup splash followed by a message telling me I have an install problem. I can't actually do anything. Elements 11 seems to be working fine.

Ideas?
