the gun to the head rental system is really the act of a monopoly and as you pointed out probably illegal in the EU..

I have formalised my concerns with the Office of Fair trading in the Uk and also with the European Commission on Competition..

Any proprietary file format is at the mercy of the developers, and formats can become obsolete or unsupported in the future. Adobe is simply "monetizing" that fear by charging you continually.

Luckily, many Adobe apps use formats that can be read by other apps, or that are open standards. Some, like InDesign files, cannot be read by others. (Though perhaps Quark might lure people back with the ability to read .indd files, as Adobe lured them away with the ability to read .qxd. )

For me, I'm staying on a CS6 perpetual licence, and when that software won't run on the latest OS/hardware, I'll make a decision about what other apps I'll use instead.

That's really a question only you can answer for yourself.

I'm a Cloud member for the deal as it stands today which I regard as good value for me today.

I'm trusting that the wrinkles will be ironed out over the next couple of years as this Cloud thing matures.

No-one's got all the answers (technical or commercial) yet, least of all Adobe. I just look at what I can gain from the deal today. For me, it's a good (not perfect) deal.

Next year, I might opt out. We'll see.

I’m still concerned about the loss of my original work especially for new subscribers to CC who have never owned a perpetual license and who will not even have the CS6 export route. This becomes less and less backward compatible as new CC features are added over time.

This may be legal in the US, but probably constitutes unreasonable contract terms in the EU. Not much enlightenment was given by Mala Sharma, who is VP of professional business in Adobe’s digital media business unit; speaking on the 4th of June in an interview at Adobe’s Creative Days event in London.
