You can always set her machine to download the updates but require user input for the actual install. Then just tell her to let you handle the updates. That way you don't need to 'watch', just 'check' every now and then.

Hmm... I thought Win8.1 would be an eventual "push" update, so manually did the "update" to have a faster download ahead of the "push"

I will still watch her "push, updates" to be sure 8.1 is not downloaded

I don't believe 8.1 will ever be an 'update'. I believe Microsoft is considering it an 'upgrade' and only making it available through the Store. Meaning you have to initiate the process manually.

Wife would still be on WinXP except she likes to have SO many programs open at once that the max 4gig of XP 32bit was "overwhelmed" by the demands of her workflow

I was going to put Win7 64bit pro on the computer I built for her last November, except she saw Win8 in a store and INSISTED on Win8

Now, I am hoping that I can review her monthly Win8 updates in time to block the 8.1 update... or I will have to do "something" else to make her 3D program work again

Her ATI 5450 has not had a driver update in a long time (and not likely to have any in the future since it is now a "legacy" card according to ATI) so I would have to replace a perfectly good card with a newer model, to be able to get a newer driver... one more "Microsoft Tax" to pay!

Anyway, I restored her computer back to Win8 and she is happy again

Adobe CS6, Cinema 4D R15 and various other software run like butter on Win 7.

I can't speak for Cinema 4D, but both the CS6 and CC suites run just fine under both Windows 8 and 8.1. And there are some nice improvements in 8 over 7. They're not major, not necessarily worth a reinstall. But for anyone looking to build or buy a new system, I'd definitely recommend Windows 8 over 7.

Going back some years, I had a few 3D and 3D "paint" programs, that were legacy. None would run on a machine with more than 512MB RAM (yeah, that was once a "high limit"), a C:\ larger than 1GB, or any Windows OS, after WinME (that dog), so I built a computer just for them, with a fast (for the day) CPU and GPU, but < 1GB RAM, a tiny C:\, and only those programs, plus about Ps 7.0.1. That machine served its purpose for about 3 years, and I was finally able to find newer replacement programs for each - then I just rebuilt the machine with 4GB RAM, XP-Pro and a decent C:\. Sometimes legacy software needs a special touch - sort of like having a older doggie in the household.

Personally, you guys are making me feel better that I am sticking with XP-Pro on two machines, and Win7-64 on the other two. Might be missing a bell, or two, and maybe a whistle, but things are running fine. So I keep harking back to the old, "if it ain't broke... "

I am also sticking with Win7... my wife is one of the few people who LIKES the initial tile/menu screen in Win8

Once past the tile/menu screen, Win8 has much the same desktop as Win7, and it runs her programs the same... but there are clearly enough code changes, especially in the 8.1 version, to cause problems with some functions/programs

Someday I will build a new computer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1305373 and I have an unused Win7 64bit to install, so will use that instead of Win8

At this point, the only possible fix for wife's 3D program problem is an upgrade from her 2012 CAD program to the 2014 version... and no guarantee that Win8.1 won't break that as well

Looks like I will have to watch her Windows Update screens, and block 8.1 from installing

Yeah, it does seem that 8.1 changes some sharing and permissions that you will need to fix. But once done, it seems to work fine.

I will remember that, should we survive the kitchen/pool remodel, and decide to tackle the master bath... doubt that I will survive though. Just had one of those in Washington, DC, and I was almost late for dinner two nights - you are correct.

Be careful about the plans. Don't include a double headed shower. My new house has one and it makes it difficult to get out of the darn shower. I just love having hot water hit me from two directions. But don't do it. The water bills are going to be horrendous if I keep this up.

I just saw a headline in Google news that Win8.1 RT has been pulled because it was "bricking" tablets

I have certainly "pulled" Win8.1 off my wife's computer (I'm REALLY happy that I made an "Image" before installing so I could restore!!!) and now her 3D function is working again while she arranges "stuff" in the plan for our new house (when this one someday sells)

When you update to 8.1, you lose access to the Homegroup. You just need to add yourself back with the password.

Won't help with the driver issue, though.

probably the 2nd problem has to do with adminitrative rights on that network...have access to her doc folder. stuff is getting more and more complicated re: rights and security... sometimes the 'answer' for the software co. is to just turn things OFF... with updates.

kinda like take two steps forward to make networking easy... and then take one step Back when theres a vulnerable code etc.

its a never ending pain in the butt if you ask me... always having to worry about creeps out there... with ill intent...

Windows 8.1 Problem(s)

Wife has Win8 so I did the update on her computer to 8.1 on Friday... and just used my backup image to go back to Win8 due to (at least) 2 problems

One - she uses the "home" version of an Architectural design program, which includes a 3D camera function to see things like how your walls/windows/furniture will look... the 3D view works with Win8 but was intermittent with Win8.1 - sometimes the 3D view would show, mostly it would not - with the "usual/generic" message to look for a newer device driver... since there ATI 5450 does not have a newer driver (and not likely to, since it is "old" in today's market) that was HER big reason to go back to Win8

Two - her Win8 and my Win7 computers are linked in a "homegroup" network... so I may do her file backups remotely... works perfectly in Win8, but in Win8.1 I was denied access to her My Documents folder... which was MY big reason to put her computer back to Win8

So, for now, she will stay at Win8 instead of Win8.1
