PS, just for historical accuracy. I don't remember that Adobe ever had Director as part of any bundles, but it was absolutely bundled as part of several different product suites sold by Macromedia over the years, way, WAY back when.

Thanks! I was looking at the creative cloud dropdown , where director isn't even mentioned - didn't occur to me to dig that deeply into the 'buy' menu , and I can't really understand how they differentiate "subscription" options vs single app cloud options. Adobe works in mysterious ways. $299 update from the old director was fair - 299 from the last one seems steep. Month to month may be just what I need.

When you click Buy, (Buying guide | Adobe Director) you can choose - Full, Upgrade and Subscription.

An Adobe sales chat guy named Morph just told me that I could get Director via the standalone application subscription for $19.99 /mo if you get it for a year, or on a month to month basis for -- I think he said - $29.99 /mo - but it isn't available in the drop down menu, so I'm not sure if he was just mistaken, or if they've only recently updated the policy and you have to do it through customer service since the demand is so low. Here's a screenshot of the chat - just so you don't think this is a figment of my imagination!

Just came across this thread and thought I’d reply, even though it was posted a while ago.

To the initial question –
The main answer to why Director is not in CC is that it is not within the key business objectives of Adobe.

Adobe bought Macromedia as they wanted Flash, which was at its prime. At that Director, Director was already suffering from neglect. Flash was brought into the Creative Suite as it was considered a standard for the web. Flash has lost its gloss since it was not supported on iOS and the rise of HTML5, which has consumed a lot of the Flash market. Now that Flash is in decline, there may be a point where it falls out of the CC.

Points why Director will not be part of the Creative Cloud

It does not have a big enough market to make it important to Adobe.
Director is lagging behind development of the rest of the CC products. To be part of CC, there needs to be some functional requirements like – it can integrate seamlessly with other products, fits into a common strategic market. Director is not resourced enough to ever get there.

As CodeJingle, Director’s cost is just a continuation of the past. At one point, Director was the flagship product and its price was seen as value for money based on the commercial return.

Director is a great product and had a lot of potential for the new directions technology has evolved. However, it now needs something remarkable to happen to bring it to the level to be included in Adobe’s main family of products in CC.

I wish Adobe would change its mind on this. When I was better off I bought my own copy of Director along with several other professional applications but I have been able to afford the upgrades on only one of them and so all that investment has been wasted. One of those I couldn't upgrade was Quark Xpress. However after about five years Quark made an offer to lapsed owners: get the most recent upgrade for about a third of the normal price. I jumped in and have been able to afford the cheaper upgrades since then. Why couldn't Adobe do something similar? It can't be in their interests to have a load of lapsed customers!

Creative Cloud for teachers has got me back my copies of PhotoShop, Illustrator, DreamWeaver and Flash, all for a very reasonable academic subscription. However I spent most of my time at art college using my copy of Director and I'd so love to be reacquainted with it. I've even considered getting myself a Power Mac so that I can go back and use it again.

Please, Adobe?

Yes and No. Director was always a cash grab. Even when the rights were owned my Macromedia, they always sold Director separately from all other products. So no matter how many different bundles Macromedia offered, Director was always sold by itself separately, never as part of a bundle never with anything else. Yes it is a cash grab but it is an ancient tradition dating to the beginning of Director, Adobe is just continuing the tradition. The retail cost of Director is $1,000 and cost $300 per upgrade every time a new version came out, so technically $20 a month to always have the latest version is saving money.

I don't get it ...

Flash and Dreamweaver (which were acquired from Macromedia along with Director) are included with my expensive CC subscription, but Director isn't?

Cash grab, right?
