For others' info:

We applied the Hotfix and it did not fix our restart issue.

As it turned out, we had another version of Tomcat installed on the server for a different purpose (which should be fine). The problem was that both versions of Tomcat (CF11 and standard install) use port 8009 as the shutdown port. Thus, when we tried restart the CF11 service, it wouldn't shut down while the other Tomcat was running.

This is what fixed it:

1. Go to Coldfusion11 install folder, then \cfusion\runtime\conf

2. Make a copy of server.xml

3. Edit server.xml and change the shutdown port:

4. Restart the server

After that, it worked fine.

Been out of the office since last tuesday, I can CONFIRM (YEEEE HAAA) the jar file fixed the problem on my windows 2008 r2 standard machine. Thank you sir_meili for opening this post and every one who reported the same problem, thank you Adobe and Anit for acting quickly on this. I will also confirm in the next few days if it fixes it on the windows 7 machine.

This is an issue specific hotfix created by us. You will not find it under updates/hotfix section. If you haven't receive the hotfix, then send an email to cfinstal@adobe.com.

I installed the update, remove the firewall rule blocking the IP and the services now start up normally.

Looks like blocking the IP worked for me too. Server starts fine on reboot, but still times out when restarting from the services console.

I can confirm Sir_Meili's workaround by blocking IP 192.150.19.110 allowed the service to start on our server (Win2003R2)

My last suggestion is that if you are local to the host machine that holds the VM, you should be able to connect to it locally and turn off the network and still maintain access (I'm not 100% sure on this and even then, my only experience with VMs is Hyper-V on Windows).

The only other thing is to try a network monitor (I used wireShark and winpcap). I would start it up manually and look for any strange traffic at the point that the webSocket console log was made (which is the call just before the failure I believe).

jgriffiths77, It sounds an awful lot like the issue I had, which blocking that IP did in fact work. Can you say how you blocked that IP? I added a new rule in the Windows Firewall that blocked all outgoing traffic going to IP address 192.150.19.110. This is pretty much all I added to the firewall outbound rule

Looks like it takes around 13 minutes to start. this is a VM, so I can't kill the connection. There must be some other workaround?

jgriffiths77 Make sure you are not just blocking port 80 for that IP. I blocked all traffic going to that IP. Have you tried the suggestion to start it via the command prompt? IF so, it should run to completion. If you are getting the same 12 minute gap, then I would consider installing something to monitor network traffic and see what it is calling.

If it is a local machine, you can just kill your internet connection to see if it is a network issue.

Blocking this IP didn't have any effect for me. Can't seem to get the service to start at all. Logs seem normal....any additional thoughts?

I would just block the Ip address for coldfusion.adobe.com. I don't see any harm in it. The updates within the administrator do not use that Domain name, so you'll still be able to check for updates from within the administrator and upon login to the administrator. I don't know what that check is during the startup, but it doesn't seem to be necessary at all.

I have verified that by Blocking coldfusion.exe from accessing the IP 192.150.19.110, that the service starts up fine.

If I unblock this IP, it is making a call to: /coldfusion/updates/Mi4xOjEyOlQ6UzoyOjA6Vw== at that IP (I used wireshark to monitor the network traffic).

If I block this IP, this call does not seem to be made. I'm not sure what this call does, but it allows my CF11 instance to start up. It's my first time using Wireshark, so I am not sure what I"m looking at, just that this works (for now). I have blocked it globally on my server for now. Perhaps Anit Kumar Panda can find out what that IP/URL is used for and fix it. I tried calling it locally (not on the server) and it tries to load for a bit then fails.

Edit: I should note that the above IP is for coldfusion.adobe.com (I did a reverse dns lookup). So I think my original assumption a few posts ago that this is related to updates is correct. If you do this, you will likely NOT be able to check for updates from within the CF administrator. I have not verified this yet. I'm just happy that CF is up and running.

Hopefully that little workaround will give adobe a way to find the issue. I CANNOT remove internet availability from some of these servers because we actually use it for some automated FTP access. While I can try it and see if it works, this is by far not a long term solution.

Well Greg, that is a nice workaround. Users can try that.

Apart from that, can you all try starting the CF service from console and share the request.log, stderr-.log and stdout-.logs from ColdFusion11\cfusion\jetty\logs.

We have an update for you from our organization. One of our brilliant network experts was able to fix the problem on our servers by blocking those servers ability to browse the internet. Our production servers already had this blocked and had not been experiencing the issue. Our development servers however DID have internet browsing capability. Once that was turned off our CF11 now restarts properly.

I will confirm this as well Sir_meili . I just tried to install with the pdf option unchecked . I even went a step farther and uninstalled and then re-installed but i unchecked every option and I still got the same problem.

My workaround has been to install CF10 unfortunately. I am getting to much heat from higher ups to have a system not up and running. I've managed to keep cf10 off one of our servers in hopes that this will be fixed, but every day that seems less and less likely. NicholasDee, Just a heads up. I don't think its' the PDF servlet as I have re-installed without that option and still get the long delay. It could be something in CF related to it I suppose (that runs regardless of whether or no the PDF service is installed), but I think there is something going on between that and when CF is finall started. Unfortunately, there is no logging in that time span to specifically say what is going on.

After trying all weekend to no-avail, we have halted CF 11 upgrade until its figured out. I also just just tried installing the developer edition on my own laptop running windows 7 and IIS , then disabling IIS and Installed Apache , but I still get the same problem. When I look at the log files the pdf servlet still takes 10 plus mins to register (so it says). I reinstalled CF 10 and have no problems. Although I will continue to hack away at it when i have time.

@Sir, thanks for the reply and the kind regards, and sorry for my not being able to respond sooner. Besides seeing that Adobe was working more directly with you (and others), I was also on kind of a vacation last week, so while I was working, I had limited time other than that to keep up on mailing lists/forums.

I see now what you mean about thinking that the monitoring tools wouldn’t help, since this problem is about the startup of CF, and you feel you can’t get any CF requests (let alone the Admin) to process.

But note that if you look at the logs you shared, you’ll see that the CF Server Monitor feature was already functional:

(BTW, this is from your forum thread posted on May 29, but note that the log entries refer to Apr 30. Is it that you had not tried to start CF again in the month since that error happened? Just curious.)

Anyway, note that in your case it also indicated that the monitor is listening on port 5500 (that’s an option for the monitor, on the Monitoring Settings page, which you must have chosen to enable, as by default it listens on the external web server). As such, you may find you can get into it even when you can’t get other requests to run. It’s worth a shot. Again, once you’re in it, you should be able to take a snapshot, which may show something interesting (or it may not).

As for your being on 2012 and running as DC and DNS roles, we’ve seen the others since write that they have what seem similar problems on 2k3 and 2k8, so it may not be unique to your version of Windows (and they may confirm on seeing this that they are not running as DC or DNS roles on their servers.)

Finally, again, thanks for the kind regards on your recalling how I’d helped a previous employer of yours. Sorry we didn’t get to meet then. While I can appreciate that your new employer may think this is not something they should pay for help with, I’ll just reiterate that if you don’t get it solved with Adobe, and you tried with me and we did NOT solve it, then you would NOT pay for that time. So you’d only be paying IF I helped you solve it, and I would NOT drag it on to be a long engagement. I’d not be surprised if we found something within an hour or two.

If we did, then at that point, while I can’t waive my consulting fees if it’s determined to be an Adobe bug, at least you’ll have solved it, if getting to 11 is worthwhile. It does have new features that perhaps you’re hoping to use, so you can decide if this is worth pursuing. But until then, I hope you or the Adobe folks or others experiencing this may get to the bottom of it. Again, I shared still another tool which could help, and I’d help you or anyone else best use such tools to try to get to the bottom of this. As always, though, I have also offered the info in my last reply to let those who prefer to try to work it out on their own.

Hi Everyone,

I have received the logs. Please allow us some time to investigate on the issue. I have requested everyone for the Event Viewer Logs (System & Application) as well. Please send them along.

Also, since everyone is using Windows Server 2012 R2, I have a troubleshooting step that can be tried. The suggestion may sound very basic, but it will help us to further isolate the issue.

1. Start>>Run>>msconfig and click OK

2. Go to "Services" tab and check the box "Hide all Microsoft services" as shown below.

3. Click Disable all and click OK. For the changes to take effect, you need to restart the server.

4. After the system restart, try to start the ColdFusion services from services panel.

5. If the same fails, try to start it from command prompt as discussed above and share your findings.

Since, we are unable to repro the issue at our end, we would need more information from your server. Please try the following:-

1. Stop ColdFusion service

2. Delete all the logs from C:\ColdFusion11\cfusion\logs\

3. Launch Command prompt as Administrator

4. Browse to cf_root\cfusion\bin and run the following command coldfusion.exe -start >> console.txt

5. Try to access the CF admin, once the services are started.

Send us all the logs from C:\ColdFusion11\cfusion\logs\ and the console.txt from cf_root\cfusion\bin. Send them to cfinstal@adobe.com , referencing this thread.

This is indeed not a solution. We shared it as a workaround.

We tested this with a fresh installation of Windows server 2012 R2. We are unable to replicate the issue. This looks like a machine/server specific issue. I have asked for some more logs from sirmeili, but haven't heard back.

I wish I could test this work around with my 2012r2 box, but I can't because it is 3k miles away and I have to remote desktop into it (hence disabling the network card would boot me off the machine with no way to connect). I can't possibly be expected to pay the data center support to continuously log into my machine and re-enable the card every time CF needs a restart.

If anyone has this problem on a 2012r2 box, can you try this solution and see if it at least works? I want to try it, but the "higher ups" will just find the hassle too much to bear if we have to this ever time.

Anit Kumar Panda, I know that you set it up on a 2012r2 box, did you keep it running on that box for any length of time? I think I saw it start to happen as early as a week from the initial install.
