Interesting idea, but after looking at the ASUS Sabertooth X79 motherboard, it won't work unless I use a different Socket 2011 motherboard... no PCI-E v2 connections

If you want one slightly higher performance SSD drive take a look at the Plextor M6e PCIe line. My 256 GB model (they have 128 and 512 GB also) exports (writes) from Premiere at 562 MB/second and HDTune Pro the read speed is 743 MB/second. It requires PCie v2 2 lanes and installs automatically . I purchased this one for $300. They now are available for slightly less.

Yes that would be the update. Crucial doesn't update their firmware very often unless there are some major fixes. The only consideration is the onboard controller mode. The Crucial bootable update wont see the drives if the Intel controller is in Raid mode. You have to set to AHCI mode long enough to update them.

Hmm... I'm going to have to be able to boot from my DVD drive to install Windows anyway, so IF Crucial offers a way to create a bootable CD then I have no problems booting to install a firmware update... which I am going to HOPE doesn't have to be done very often

The other advantage to Crucial, at least for data, is they offer a 1 Terabyte SSD for only a "small" amount more than the Samsung 512Gig drive... so I can keep "stuff" on the data drive longer without having to move files off to a USB hard drive

ADDED... went to Crucial site and clicked around a bit... they have an ISO to download to create a bootable disc (I presume CD) for firmware upgrades... so will add Crucial to my possible list

Well I would use Crucial for all the drives due to the testing results they reflect so far. The Samsung Pro drives do have the Samsung magician utility which makes it easier to update the firmware on the drives depending on the platform and some tools useful for SSD's. Crucial's firmware update utility normally requires a bootable update versus the Windows update on X79 platform. If your comfortable with that for the OS then Crucial for OS is fine.

Considering the price differences, why would I not use Crucial for ALL my SSD drives?

Or, why still use a Samsung for boot/software but Crucial for the other drives?

Thanks, I will look at the Crucial SSD for the 128/512Gig drives

Based on my reading so far, I "knew" that a 4gig NVidia was "needed" for 4k video... but I suppose a 4gig card would make Photoshop faster even though my video is only "regular" HiDef

I've used Intel and Asus motherboards with very good results, so will have to read about Asrock

The Crucial M550 drives are testing in the same performance range as the Samsung drives along with far greater cycle endurance than the 75TB their rated at. They perform extremely well in raid. You may want to consider those for the media and cache drives. The 760GTX 4GB card is only a marginal price increase over the 2GB card. Why not get that one in stead?

The Asrock Extreme 9 is in the price range of that Asus board. I would consider that as well.

I may have confused myself... ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com

Specifications say

SATA 3Gbs 4

SATA 6Gbs 4 x SATA 6Gb/s

I was reading that as Sata III and Sata 6, but that may not be right... I now think that the 2nd line is Sata III at 6 Gigabytes per second... which matches the Samsung 840 Pro

As well as SSD being faster than platter drives, the power consumption is lower so I can use an 850w power supply instead of the 1000w I have planned with 4 platter drives

That gives me the 4 "fast" Sata connections I need for 4 SSD drives, and a "slower" Sata connection for my DVD burner... perfect for my needs

When I open the specification PDF from the Samsung page, it says (one page 2) INTERFACE • 2.5" SATA III (6Gb/s)

So... Newegg is correct... the Samsung 840 Pro SSD is Sata3, not Sata6 as is supported on the motherboard I linked

Still faster than a 7200rpm platter drive, but not Sata6

No, in this case their information is accurate. It is not always the case, but here they are correct.

SATA comes in three generations, SATA I, SATA II (also known as 3 G) and SATA III (also known as 6G). Now there is even a SATA / SAS 12 G interconnect, soon to be followed by SATA Express or NVMe.

I'm not going to build for awhile, but I'm putting my list together, and I've decided to go all SSD for speed & low heat generation

I will be using a 256G for boot/software, a 512G for data input files, and two 128G, one each for project/scratch and edited output files

The ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 motherboard has Sata6 ports, but the current Samsung 840 Pro SSD line is all Sata3

While that will still be a lot faster than a 7200rpm platter drive, I'm wondering if anyone knows if Samsung is developing a Sata6 SSD line?
