Trouble with cursor in text box

I'm on a Mac, and when I'm trying to work with text in Fireworks, I can't place the cursor (I-beam) where I want to amongst existing text in a text box. The only way to insert or change text is to highlight what's already there and "write over it." I've noticed that the cursor, when I move it up over the text box, suddenly has a tiny arrow next to it on the lower right-hand side of the I-beam. I'm wondering if I've accidentally changed settings or something. I appreciate any help with this issue.
