Open the JPEG line drawing
Double click on the background layer to convert it to a regular layer
Set up the magic wand tool. Uncheck "contiguous". Enter 32 (default) for tolerance value. You may have to adjust this subsequently, depending on the file.
Left click on a white area, then hit delete on the keyboard
Save in a file format which supports transparency, e.g. PNG.

I have a line drawing jpeg and I want to convert it to something that I can overlay on another picture using PPT -- so that I can see the line drawing with the other picture as background. How do I create such a jpeg transparency? Currently the white background of the line drawing appears opaque when I overlay it.
