Everything's on zero dB by default. I haven't even done a "mix" as such. Just exported the "selected clip" in multitrack mixdown. Even boosting the master level doesn't change the exported file level which is a clear 6dB lower than the original.

(Seems to be the same problem as the OP - "Why does audition not mixdown to the ACTUAL volume in the tracks?")

Check the position of the output fader, perhaps? It would help if a) you started a new thread about it, and b) posted a screenshot of the mixer.

Years later...

I'm on Audition CC 2014.1, and I'm exporting a single stereo track, which comes out at -6dB compared to the original! That's -6dB lost on EACH channel! That doesn't make sense. I've just applied some minor fades & trim. other than that it should be the same file. There is no reason for it to be compressed by 6 dB.

I haven't found how to correct this, if anyone knows?

-3dB panning means that when there is no panning, everything is 3dB quieter. When you pan something full left or right, then it becomes at normal level. I guess we should say "-3dB centreing".

sorry if it seems im being ignorant, bit of a newbie with it. but getting to grips with the terminology

All my material has no panning. all stereo. if that helps.

As Steve mentioned above the -3dB panning may give eroneous results depending on how things are panned and mixed. Selecting L/R cut logarithmic puts some of this right but in certain circumstances I belive that it could produce over levels of centrally panned mono material.

Yeah every level at 0. Very strange.

In other news.... I switched to Panning: L/R cut logarithmic in advanced session properties (multitrack view) and got a true volume mixdown.

Thing is has done anything to the quality of the sound? Or mixed down in an different way I should be worried about? What does the above setting actually do to the mixdown?

Same settings as me.

Are you selecting 'master' as your source in File->Export->Audio Mixdown?

If so have you also checked the level of your master volume?

Im using file / export / mixdown and im getting -3db results.

in advanced sessio properties (multitrack view) i have

Panning: -3db center, contstant power
Clip Volume Envelopes: 0% to 100% range.

What's the effect of switching to Panning: L/R cut logarithmic?

If I use File->Export my levels are fine - if I right click and select 'mixdown' then I just add 3db gain

Looks like I need more education.

So the only was round this is to normalise or gain back up +3db after the files is mixed down?

No, I figured it out - it's just wrong...

The actual answer to your question as to what is happening with the levels is this bit (quoted from my reply):

>If you have the -3dB center option selected, a 0dB mono tone file panned dead center and mixed down to mono will result in a -3dB tone, but if you pan it completely to one side, and mix it down to mono again, it will play back at -6dB. You have no dB addition of the two tracks, and most importantly, you have to remember that it's been through two pan pots before it's outputted - which is why it's 3dB lower than you thought it might be.

Or if you want it in much simpler language, the AA3.0 mixer is configured differently from the AA1.5 mixer, and the levels don't equate. This is because of the additional master output section in AA3.0 having its own panpot. If that wasn't there (and I could make a good case for it not being, I have to say - I don't recall any real mixers having a panpot that applies to the master output!), then the levels would be correct.

Mixdown, bounce & export all have their place and in this instance you should probably be using File->Export

hello all... need a little help with mixdowns.

I got a few tracks on a simple project an hour long.

Nothing peaks above -0.5db. then every time i mixdown the final track, the resulting wav is always to about -3 db. making me have to normalise it to get it back up to its "real" volume.

IS there any way around this? why does audition not mixdown to the ACTUAL volume in the tracks?
