Hi, Beth. No, it's not cheap software. ;-)

There seemed to be this yawning gap between consumer ($49-$99) software and professional ($500+) software. I actually really like the price point of $249.

Oh, and now LightZone has been released today, too. I'll try the 30-day free trial when I get home tonight. I mentioned this a few weeks ago; it looks really interesting.

It's aimed at photographers; it's not really useful for the painters or retouchers amongst us.

Barbara, yeah, by all rights I should've ordered it by now--especially after all my whining:

It certainly does sound like what I was looking for [fade in famous U2 song here]. I think Aperture is a steal for professional photographers, but as an amateur I think it is a little pricey. Of course, Christmas is coming.... :-) and so is MacWorld in January, and maybe iPhoto 6 will have 90% of what I want?? I keep vacillating. I tell myself it's too expensive, then I make the mistake of viewing the videos on Apple's web site ( http://www.apple.com/aperture/profiles/ )

Ask me in 2 weeks and I may have different answer!

Someone over at fredmiranda.com mentioned that Aperture is only $249 for students. Hmmm. Can you say, 'Community Ed.'?! ;-)

$499 US. The same price as Capture One. If you look at the Apple web site, Aperture does tons more.

LOL, yes Barbara, it looks very interesting. The requirements don't seem bad (since it works on a notebook G4, I can't see why it wouldn't work on a desktop G4, other than RAM and video card being issues; and I've got a G5 2x2.0 tower, anyway).

Ah, but I've got to have

to complain about. ;-) It doesn't (yet?) support the Pentax *ist DS. :-( It does support Adobe's DNG, so I could use the DNG Converter. I would like to avoid that, but we'll see.

There's also that "Lightwave" product that's supposed to come out this month. I wanna look at that first.

From the description, it sounds like a fancy version of Organizer for "Pro"
photographers complete with quick fix stuff like red eye correction and
straightening. But, it's apparently not intended to be an editor. Did you
notice that you still need Photoshop for compositing and layer effects.

That red eye reduction is going to come in pretty handy for those Pro studio
photographers :-) My guess is it's aimed at paparazzi who shoot with
camera attached flash and need to quickly select which shots to submit to
the gossip magazines before being trumped by another paparazzo. ;-)

NOTE: I have my tongue firmly planted in my cheek. And, no animals were
harmed in the production of this post.
