DEGREE SYMBOL

I am trying to follow the directions to add the degree symbol to the toolbar. I need the degree symbol code to enter. Also, there is already a degree symbol in the cmds.cfg and menu.cfg files. Not sure why the symbol does not appear on the drop-down? the /xXX is what I believe I need.
Thanks,
Carl

Publish in Responsive HTML5 - files skipped and 3rd level topics not generated

I'm having trouble getting the new FrameMaker 11 Publish features to work as expected.

I have a ditamap with three levels of headings. When I use the Publish feature to output in Responsive HTML5, a TOC is produced, in which there are no links below the second level.

Moreover, even some files at the second level randomly are not accessible from the TOC. A link is present, but when I click, it lands on a page that says "this webpage is not found".

When I look in the output directory, all the files are present in html form, so they do exist.

One file, however, although correctly formed in the xml source with a series of unordered lists, comes out looking like this:

*****

An interactive script called bootstrap_.cmd is provided when you run the installation package for the Control Centre. This script simplifies the configuration of the sample database with a MySQL database engine. When bringing the pdf up in a smart phone and tapping on the link, it will bring up email to that person. Is there a FrameMaker version that also does this for a phone number and what is the text that needs to be typed in? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!!

Text missing from PDF

I am a long-time and very experienced user of FrameMaker, Acrobat, and all associated tools. My XP-SP2 system is thoroughly debugged and fully updated.

When I create PDFs in Frame, sections of the text come up missing. The document remains correctly formatted and organized - there are simply missing sentences, paragraphs, etc. in no discernible pattern. I have tried every fix I can think of and all those I have found by searching online - to no avail.

These documents are created from scratch in Frame 7.2p158; I have updated the installation at least once without solving the problem. The PDFs are being created by every known process: print to Distiller (7.0) within Frame; Save As PDF; print to generic PostScript and pass to Distiller. The missing text remains consistent within all processes.

The fonts involved range from junk of unknown origin to (most of my fonts) true Adobe Postscript. Changing fonts does not cure the problem, although it sometimes changes which parts disappear. There is no particularly complex formatting involved (no equations, no unusual character overrides). These documents are mostly contracts and other simple but rigidly formatted documents. None involve imported graphics.

I have tried all variations of saving to MIF and RTF and re-importing. This sometimes changes the faults, but does not cure them.

This problem occurs ONLY with FrameMaker. I can export perfect PDFs, some from very complex source documents, from Word, InDesign, CorelDRAW and a dozen other tools, using any fonts on my system.

(I am dismayed at how hard Adobe support has gotten to use - as the owner of nine of their most expensive apps, I should be able to get better online support without calling in and begging permission!)

If anyone can point me to a known bug, a known fix, or a good starting point for unraveling this problem - or confirm that they've seen a similar error - I would appreciate it!

ANSI Z535.1 Safety Colors in Frame

Frame 7.1 Solaris (Frame 9 Win7 available).

Although the manuals I work on are print-published only in grayscale (600 dpi bitmap, actually), we make them available on the web as PDFs (which could be in color). At some point in the future, we may publish in color (probably using Xerox or HP laser engines).

For recent works, we've been using color, where convenient, and just leaving it enabled in the PDFs. For lack of a more compelling model, the color space chosen is sRGB. Those users exposed to color are most likely viewing the PDF on a computer, or printing it on their own inkjet or color laser printer.

A portion of the color content is graphic panels for DANGER/WARNING/CAUTION/NOTICE, and representation of product decals and labels of those same hazard classes.

The dominant market is U.S. domestic, so we follow ANSI standards for these admonishments. The ANSI standards include color specifications (ANSI Z535.1-2006) for safety notcies. The colors used in our manuals are only Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue at present.

Z535.1 specifies these colors in Munsell HVC and CIE 1931 xyY illuminant C coordinates. Most of the ANSI colors are out of gamut for sRGB.

The ANSI colors are realisable as printable spot colors on decals and product labels, but ANSI did not address how to render them in typical document printing. (Actually, the spec claims to provide Pantone equivalents, but does not.)

So, the spec colors can't be matched in normal printing from a random PDF viewer to a random color printer.

Well, we can at least pick something and be consistent, so the safety colors all have the same appearance within our documents, and perhaps match hue to safety spec.

Frame's color library, the Munsell Library of Colors or the Munsell High Chroma, has some of the Munsell values for ANSI patches, but they look awful, probably due to the [unspecified] choice of rendering intent in the mapping of library colors to the RGB/CMYK/HLS values actually used. And, of course, Frame has no color management to speak of, so the RGB/CMYK/HLS values are uncalibrated.

There may exist professional tables of Munsell/sRGB matchings (rit.edu's Munsell lab seems to have misplaced theirs during their web revamp), but this has a similar problem: what was the rendering intent during the mapping? Typically, conversions try to preserve some color difference between nearby out-of-gamut colors. I don't care about that. I want to get as close as possible to the ANSI colors in sRGB space, and I want to at least match hue (no "blue turns purple").

Any number of web sites purport to have RGB values for these colors, but they are even more vague about how they arrived at them, so they usually disagree from one site to the next.

There are lots of tools that perform CIE to sRGB conversions, but they are similarly challenged in the matter of intent (plus whether they accounted for the wandering of hue as you attempt to scale chroma in models other than Munsell).

What I probably need is the limiting sRGB value of the same hue as the Munsell value for the ANSI spec color.

Using BabelColor, I experimented with sRGB values until I could obtain:

* a match for the Hue

* a match (or a within-ANSI-tolerance) for Value.

* as close as possible for Chroma.

What I came up with is at the end of this post.

These colors will be entering the manuals as objects from Photoshop and Illustrator primarily, typically RGB EPS images, tagged as sRGB with embedded profiles. Some might be created in Frame directly, and as long as:

    "Tag Everything for Color Management"

with a working space of:
    sRGB IEC61966-2.1

is specified during Distiller, the resulting colors in PDF seem to match regardless of source.

What is everyone else doing about this?

Z535.1.Blue _________________
ANSI Munsell: 2.5PB 3.5 / 10
Nearest sRGB: 2.5PB 3.5 / 7.9
RGB(255): 000 089 137
RGB(100%) 0.0 34.9 53.7

Z535.1.Orange ________________
ANSI Munsell: 5.0YR 6.0 / 15
Nearest sRGB: 5.0YR 6.0 / 12.7
RGB(255): 222 125 000
RGB(100%) 87.0 49.0 0.0

Z535.1.Red ___________________
ANSI Munsell: 7.5R 4.0 / 14
Nearest sRGB: 7.5R 4.0 / 13.6
RGB(255): 187 039 036
RGB(100%) 73.3 15.3 14.1

Z535.1.Yellow ________________
ANSI Munsell: 5.0Y 8.0 / 12
Nearest sRGB: 5.0Y 8.1 / 11.6
RGB(255): 239 203 000
RGB(100%) 93.7 79.6 0.0
_______

Values harmonized for ISO 3864-1:2002 would be nice too.

Problems Creating PDFs

A lot of problems creating PDFs come from using the wrong printer to create the PDF or underlying printfile.

You should use Adobe's Distiller printer instance to create a PDF. This comprises the latest Adobe Postscript printer for your operating system plus the Distiller PPD.

Don't use an HP printer to create your PDF. PostScript, or otherwise.

Don't use a Xerox printer to create your PDF. PostScript or otherwise.

See #1.

Note: If you are outputting to a service bureau, you might want to use something other than the Distiller printer instance. However, if you encounter problems with your particular PDFs, try using the official method with the Distiller printer to see whether any problems are limited just to your setup. If problems persist, you might have to create your PostScript output using one printer driver and the PDF using Adobe's Distiller printer instance.

Common problems include:

Black and white, or greyscale, PDFs created from color FrameMaker books and documents.

Distiller terminating the PDF creation process early, thus no PDF is created.

Troubleshooting:

For lack-of-color problems, first check you don't have Spot as Black set in the Frame Print dialog.

Update the printer you are using to the latest Adobe PostScript printer driver version.

Uninstall the printer you are using to create PDFs and to reinstall the latest version from scratch.

Is there a way to create a standard hollow bullet?

Hello everyone,

We are using FrameMaker 12 on a Windows 7 (64 bit) platform.

I have found discussions on the Web about this, but so far nothing works for us. As you know, other word processing tools have a hollow bullet as a standard feature. After spending a couple of hours over the past few months researching forums, it appears there is no way to get a true hollow bullet in FrameMaker. Is that correct?

This is what does *not* work for us:

A Courier or Courier New lower case letter "o" (oh). If we could raise it up off the line, it would work. There appears to be no way to lift a character a few pixels off the line.

The symbol you get by pressing Alt+9: ○. When this symbol appears in FrameMaker, it is also needs to be raised up off the line so it doesn't look like the letter "o."

The circular symbol you get when you type a lower case "m" and change the font to Windings 1, because it has shading on the lower right, and also would need to be raised up off the line.

We know how to make any Winding or Webding a bullet. What we want is the standard hollow bullet. Can anyone explain how to do that?

Thank you.

Tim

Autonumbering figures off in 2 chapters of book. What should I look for?

Using FM 11. I have a nine-chapter book. The first figure is in Chapter 2; that chapter has only 1 figure. I am using the paragraph tag F:Figure\ <n+>. The figure labels are in text boxes inside the anchored frame with the graphic, but not grouped with the graphic. All the figures are auto-numbering correctly with the following exceptions:

Chapter 3, restarts numbering. First figure should be 2, but it restarts with Figure 1. An easy work around: I entered n=2 on the first figure in the chapter. That corrects all of the figure numbering through Chapter 7 which ends with Figure 55.

Chapter 8 restarts with Figure 1. It should be Figure 55. Chapter 8 has 26 figures.

Chapter 9 is totally off: starts with Figure 47. The 3 figures in the chapter are numbered 47, 48 and 49.

I have checked and double checked the formatting and have one chapter that I use as the "master" chapter – 6 because it has both tables and figures. I have imported the formats from the master chapter (6) to all other chapters. The chapter, pages and tables number correctly through the entire book. The first table is in Chapter 1, the last in Chapter 9.

Where should I look to see what is different in Chapters 8 and 9 and possibly 1? If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

But, the files aren't so much chapters as chunks of content.

What I want to do: If content in a file ends on an odd page, start the next file on the next even page.

What doesn't work: I can use chapter-level pagination to delete empty pages and set the starting side as next available. So, if file (chapter) 1 ends on page 7, then the beginning of the next file will indeed be page 8. BUT, the beginning of the next file uses a right-hand master page, so it uses a right page layout for a left page.

Thoughts?
Error message "Failed importing documents" when publishing book to responsive HTML5

Hi,

I have FM12, version 12.0.3. This is a relatively big book (500 pages, conditional text, around 800 images). I have plenty of hard disk space and memory. All files are opened. Still, 9 times out of 10 (approximately) I have a "failed importing documents" message after a third of the book was processed (not always happening on exactly the same file). Note that the conversion is terribly slow (28 min; around twice as long as when using TCS and Robohelp 11).

My guess is that the guilty ones are the images because they are unfortunately embedded (legacy reasons). With TCS5, Robohelp would crash for the same reason. I had found a script to externalize the graphics (ExtendScript of the week: Externalizing Graphics « TechComm Central by Adobe); but somehow, this script is not working since I updated from 12.0.2 to 12.0.3. This means I cannot test my hypothesis. Although I wrote a few simple scripts, this one is quite complex and would be difficult to debug. Unless anyone here knows what could have changed to make the script useless after such a small update?

I mention the following just in case it's related and may help you: In the publish pod, when I open the Edit window of the Responsive HTML5, and click on style mapping, after a few minutes this message displays :

*Filename* could not be processed

In which of course Filename is one of the files in the book. Again, I don't know why this error happens.

Any idea about these problems?

Thanks!

Paragraph numbering doesn't show up in TOC

I am working on a book with multiple chapters. Within each chapter, I have heading styles that use auto numbering (Heading 1 shows 1.1, 1.2, etc.; Heading 2 is 1.1.1, 1.1.2, etc.; Heading 3 is 1.1.1.1, 1.1.1.2, etc). These numbers show up fine in the chapters, but I can't seem to get them to show up in the generated TOC. I have tried adding <$chapnum>.<$sectionnum>.<$subsectionnum> to the TOC reference page, but that only seems to show the TOC chapter number, rather that the chapter the heading is actually in. I tried auto numbering in the TOC, but that didn't work either. Is there any way to show numbering from chapters in the TOC?

This is how it looks now:

Lab 3: Adding Redundancy to a Component

  Purpose ...........................................7 - 1

  Functional Goals.............................. 7 - 1

  Setup ..............................................7 - 1

Code Files for this Lab...................... 7 - 2

This is how I want it to look:

Lab 3: Adding Redundancy to a Component

  7.1 Purpose ...........................................7 - 1

  7.2 Functional Goals.............................. 7 - 1

  7.3 Setup ..............................................7 - 1

  7.4 Code Files for this Lab...................... 7 - 2

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it!!!

Thank you!

Internet Explorer does not jump at CSH marker in HTML5

Hi,

I have TCS5 (FM12 and RH11), but am now trying FM12's publish feature. So far, Chrome and Firefox work well. In other words: I click on an item in our application software and the browser opens and jumps at the proper location (where the CSH marker is). But IE11 only opens up the proper file. So what the user see is the beginning of the HTML file and has to search for what he/she wants in the file, which defeats the purpose of CSH marker.

It seems that the tag-attribute pair used by RH when generating HTML5 is <a name="CSH_1">. According to w3school (HTML a tag), the "name" attribute is not supported in HTML5 (they say to use the global id attribute instead). So, I guess that IE simply does not support the name attribute. Obviously, one wonders why TCS uses an attribute which is not part of the HTML5 standard. But there is no use getting into that. ;-) Therefore, my questions would be, in order:

- Is there a way for IE to work properly with the name attribute?

- Is there a way to get FM or RH to export HTML5 using the global attribute?

- Is there an existing way (script?) to replace the name attribute by the global id attribute? If I do it myself, will the mapping mechanism still work?

Many thanks!

FrameMaker SDK Question: How to read an XML file

Hi,

I am using FDK 12.0 on Windows (using Visual Studio 2012) to make some changes in a FrameMaker document programmatically. I have never used this or any other Adobe API before and am somewhat struggling with the concepts. Primarily I am using the sample programs, coming along with the FDK to guide me.

Now, I want to open and parse an XML file, whose content I will use later to manipulate the texts in a FrameMaker document. In .NET framework there are several classes (XMLReader, XMLTextReader etc.) to read and parse XML files easily. However, it seems I cannot use these Common Language Runtime classes because, apparently, a FDK plug-in needs to be a) C program and b) should not use CLR. In view that, can anyone please indicate if there are any suitable set of functions in FDK itself for parsing an XML file. Otherwise, is there any pure C based XML parser I can use? Some actual sample will be very helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Joydeep

[Discussion moved by moderator]

Better drawing tools needed

FrameMaker drawing tools haven't changed since I started using FM 5 for UNIX (might have been FM 3--hard to remember that far back). The tools are clumsy to manipulate, they don't "remember" your last settings, and they don't tell you what the current settings are for items already in the book (for example, color or line width), and you can't save presets. These failings make it difficult to make your drawings consistent throughout a book without writing down your settings elsewhere, and you always have to take extra time to change the settings to what you need each time you open a new file. It is inefficient, cumbersome, limiting, and leaves too much room for error.

It's time for more sophisticated tools for drawing and editing those drawings in anchored frames. Perhaps Adobe could borrow some features from Illustrator or InDesign and add them to the Graphics Toolbar.

Here are some items I wish I had been able to use while writing my last book in FM9. I really just wanted Illustrator/InDesign tools, but the below items would have sufficed:

Recall last settings automatically (or at least have option to)

Add presets for arrows, lines, boxes; ability to add custom presets

More control over drawing and editing straight lines when using Shift key

View current settings for drawings (line width, color, arrow style, dash pattern)

Add more patterns

Thanks,

Karen

Framemaker 8. Landscape Chapters adding blank page every other page.

Hi,

I am currently using FrameMaker 8 to create my book. I have multiple chapters, both Landscape and Portrait. I use Framescript > Scripts > Insert Reports to insert PDF documents into my chapters. I have an excel spreadsheet that has two columns code/pdf file name that the Framscript uses to insert the report. I insert a code into the chapter, and from that code it references the matching PDF file to insert.

I have been running this without any issues until now, because now in the Landscape chapters it is adding a blank page between all my pages. So every other page is blank. For example if the PDF file had 2 pages now I have 2 pages and 2 blank pages. On the blank page I do have a symbol (RS Report Spacer) that appears. I could delete it and the blank page goes away. But this can be troublesome since I have hundreds of pages and every time I run my book the blank pages will reappear.

I have tried Pagination to delete blank pages but to no avail. It does not delete the blank page. The weird part is that for my Portrait chapters this problem does not occur. I am writing this with a small glimmer of hope somebody can help me.

Thank you in advance,

Dan

This doesn't happen to all of them ... some are ok.

I have tried using the following file types: PNG, AI and EPS.

Based on what I read in another discussion here, I have also tried changing my Adobe PDF settings. I have tried using Press Quality as a Default setting. I have also turned off all downsampling of images.

In Acrobat, I have tried turning off smoothing. This helps, but doesn't clear up all the graphics.

Also, I am using FrameMaker 8.

FrameMaker Server - just a dream?

I currently use FM8 for books. Our company wants me to develop a solution that I think FM can meet but I am not familiar with XML capacities of FM Server.

If I get the FM Server upgrade, can I complete these tasks?:

1) Central, web accessible location for all pdfs.
2) Role-based editing on demand (softwaer developers that need to update the docs periodically) through some web-based interface.
3) Role-based viewing of pdfs (user groups can only view pdfs applied to their group)
4) Creation of an TOC that will automatically update when documents are edited.

This is a theory question. Is it possible? Is FM8 Server using XML enough to do this? Do I need to hire programmers to develop an interface for document editors? What kind (C, Java, etc).

Requesting feedback or some ideas.

Script does not work anymore after updating to FM 12.0.3

So, I found a script to externalize the graphics before doing the import (the script is: ExtendScript of the week: Externalizing Graphics « TechComm Central by Adobe). However, this script is not working since I updated from 12.0.2 to 12.0.3. And without this script, we can't create HTML5 output!

Although I wrote a few simple scripts, this one is quite complex and would be difficult to debug. Anyone here knows what could have changed to make the script useless after such a small update? Or can update this script to make it work?

Thanks!

FM10: PDF output not including part of graphic in header

Here are my versions: (TCS3.0)

FM 10.0.1.402

Acrobat 10.1.1

Distiller 10.1.133

I have a book recently created in FM10. I needed to add a very large table. I followed Barb Binder's instructions for setting up landscape master pages (from the IconLogic 8/9/11 Skills & Drills newsletter). Everything worked perfectly. I was able to create the master pages and body pages using them, and eventuallly get the large table in the doc file. So far so good... I wanted to see how the new pages and table would look in PDF, so I did a File > Save as PDF. The PDF was created as expected.

However, I have a strange issue with our company logo in the header. It's in the header on all pages of this document and looks fine on all pages in FM - both on the body and master pages. But in the PDF, the last letter of the company name is cut off. I cannot figure out what's going on. I've also tried to Print to File using the Adobe PDF printer and creating a PS file that I then distilled to PDF. Same problem no matter what method I use. In the PDF, the logos on all non-landscape pages are fine.

Here are some screen caps.

The document open in FM - this shows the Telesoft logo on left and right body pages using the landscape master pages:

Here is the LandscapeLeft master page:

The LandscapeRight master page:

Here's a screen cap of a LandscapeLeft page in the PDF:

Here's a screen cap of a LandscapeRight page in the PDF:

Notice the final "T" missing for the header graphic on both the right and left pages. On the master page, there is plenty of room in the anchored frame that holds the graphic, so the frame isn't cutting anything off. The exact same headers are used on both the regular and landscape master pages and all is well in the PDF for the regular pages.

I really appreciate any suggestions!

Kim

They have upgraded to FrameMaker 12 and are now experiecing some problems regarding print. Framemaker 12 unstructured version 12.0.2.389 crashes when trying to print. Sometimes the print dialogue opens when they try to print to pdf and then FM crashes after a little while, but often merely trying to reach the print dialogue makes FM crash. They are both having Acrobat set up as default printers and they are both printing across networks. And they are both having slightly older Acrobat versions than the one coming with latest Technical Communication Suite. I somehow suspect the trouble being related to either printing across networks or the version of Acrobat, but have not been able to solve it. I did the tab stop thing in the ruler and set the tab stop in the para designer window, but it seems I have to manually place my cursor in front of each page number and press tab in order for the tab to take effect. This is a tedious process I prefer to avoid, is there a way to automate this process?

Attached is a pic showing my current index and settings.
problem with serial number

I just recently purchased and installed the Academic version of the Adobe Technical Communication Suite. However, when I went to enter my serial number after launching Frame 8 for the first time, I received a red X at the end and was told it was not a valid serial number. I used the one listed under "Technical Suite" on my box. I tried to enter it several times and even had a colleague try to no avail.

I tried to use the Adobe online chat and was told that the number was valid, but had not been "activated." I was confused as I thought that what I was doing in the Software Setup was activating the number. I am on a machine with internet access and administration permission. The entry fields only allow numerical entry, so I know I am not confusing 0 and O. The online chat rep told me I had to call Customer Service.

So far, my "customer service" experience has been very poor. I provided all my info and the serial number and was told I need to talk to Technical Support, they transferred me. The next person took all the same info and said that I needed to talk to customer service and transferred me back, but of course to a new rep. I was transferred back to Support Options again, then transferred into oblivion where no one answered for 40 minutes and then I was disconnected!!!

After reading some of these forum topics, I thought maybe I was having trouble because I have had RoboHelp in the past and still had an older version of Frame. I proceeded to deinstall anything related to Adobe, including the new suite. Then, after a restart, I tried to reinstall and tried again to enter my serial number only to get the exact same "not valid" message.

PLEASE HELP!! I have a fast approaching deadline and need to get this worked out.

Renee
